Sculpture Garden at Royal Botanical Gardens
by Tourism Burlington
Nestled between the cliffs of the escarpment and the shores of Lake Ontario in the heart of
Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe, Burlington is close to the urban buzz of Toronto, yet surrounded by
the tranquil beauty of parks and gardens. Our city offers visitors a full spectrum of activities,
from scaling the heights of the Niagara escarpment to catching trophy sized salmon in a great
lake. There’s culture, history, fantastic festivals and fun all year round in this safe and friendly
community.
CRAVE NATURE OR ADVENTURE?
A World Famous Royal Garden: Named one of the top ten gardens in the world, the Royal
Botanical Gardens is Canada’s only royal and its largest botanical garden. Visitors come from
around the world to see the world’s largest collection of spectacular lilacs, the magnificent rose
gardens and the masses of tulips, peonies and irises in the spring. In summer months, there is an
international sculpture collection in the gardens along with special events, plant sales, nature
walks, gardening and painting workshops. The popular Holiday Traditions exhibit with its unique
model trains is a must do seasonal activity- a great multi-generational outing which will create
new family memories. In the winter an interactive exhibit features fun learning activities for all
ages focused on fascinating creatures and nature. The shop in the garden’s centre is the ideal
place to find special one-of-a-kind gifts. New this year is the redesigned Rock Garden and visitor
centre.
Adventure at Our Doorstep: Kelso/Glen Eden, Mountsberg, Crawford Lake, Hilton
Falls, Rattlesnake Point, Robert Edmondson and Mount Nemo Conservation areas offer exciting
adventure experiences, such as hiking, rock-climbing, swimming, skiing and fishing, and
each reflects a distinct character through its special attractions. Explore an authentically
reconstructed native village at Crawford Lake, or sleep under the stars at Kelso. Do an Owl
Prowl or Wolf Howl, learn about raptors and birds of prey or just enjoy the quiet serenity of the
rural countryside. For a truly unique adventure, head to the cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment, a
UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve, to hike the pathways created hundreds of years ago
along the Iroquoia portion of the Bruce Trail. See our Pinterest board on outdoor adventure.

Hiking at Mountsberg Park
by Tourism Burlington
Play in Our Parks:
Explore the Downtown Waterfront where the Rotary Centennial Pond
serves as a reflecting pool and miniature sailboat space in summer and a skating rink in winter.
The Dofasco Waterjet Park is the ideal place for children to splash on hot summer days, and the
elegant Spencer’s at the Waterfront provides fine dining with a spectacular view of the pier. Walk
Paletta Lakefront Park to experience a 14-acre heritage estate on the lake. At LaSalle Park, take
photos of the ducks and trumpeter swans that come into the bay and share with your friends on
Instagram. There are excellent picnicking opportunities at LaSalle, Hidden Valley or Lowville
Parks and many offer hiking trails, fishing, playgrounds, and winter activities. At Bronte Creek
Provincial Park, children can enjoy the play barn as well as watch the farm animals up close.
There’s a historically preserved farmhouse where you can experience life in the late 1800’s.
Swimming, hiking and learning about wildlife are all activities that visitors can enjoy. For a more
contemplative experience, walk the Central Park Labyrinth, one of the first in Canada in a public
space that is wheelchair accessible.
WALKABLE WATERFRONT
Visitors often comment that our
waterfront is so beautiful, open and
easy to explore. Located in the
heart of downtown and just steps
from the Visitor Centre Spencer
Smith Park connects via a 4 km
path with our lovely beach and the
Burlington lift bridge. This is an
easy 45 minute walk (one way) most
of which is along the shore where
you can see waterfowl, watch
freighters come through the canal
and enjoy views of the Burlington
skyline. Plan to dine at one of the
lakeside restaurants or downtown
patios. Check out our website blog
for more stories on our walkable
waterfront.

FANTASTIC FESTIVALS & LIVE MUSIC:
“Why I Love Burlington”
Mike Taylor
by T.J Champagne
When we are on the road and someone asks where Walk Off The Earth is from, like most
Burlingtonians, I’m tempted to say Toronto. But I don’t. I’m too proud of where I’m
from and always answer ‘Burlington’ instead. But it’s not as though I am hanging on
a distinction without a difference. I remember noticing back in high school, playing
in bands, that Burlington was at the center its own music scene—we had our own
musicians, our own venues, our own haunts, and most coolly, our own sound. Bands like
The Spoons and Finger Eleven were at the leading edge of this, and perhaps WOTE holds
that candle now—I am not the one to say. This town is packed with great musicians
and artists of all stripes, both aspiring and accomplished. And then there is Sound of
Music Festival—what a phenomenal, completely made-in-Burlington, world-class event.
So while there is a lot to like about Burlington—just look around—what I love about
Burlington is this slightly submerged, but always burbling creative vitality that I am
alluding to. It’s this verve, this mojo, that besides making Burlington a great place to
enjoy the arts, I think, earns Burlington its own star on the musical map.
Mike Taylor (Beard Guy), Walk Off The Earth
An eclectic mix of folk-pop, sketch group and quirky musical experimenter, Burlington’s Walk Off The Earth
is an unconventional, multi-talented musical phenomena that is currently taking the world by storm. Their
debut album, R.E.V.O., is certified gold in Canada and includes the two-time platinum single Red Hands.

artists and to an acclaimed collection of contemporary Canadian ceramics. There are frequent

Burlington’s talented local theatrical groups are on-stage with entertaining productions
throughout the year. The state of the art Burlington Performing Arts Centre brings big name
shows to the city plus showcases local talent. In the summer, the city comes alive hosting several
major outdoor festivals. During the Sound of Music, streets are closed to traffic and every corner
becomes a venue for bands. There are also outdoor concerts to enjoy throughout the summer,
Music in the Park features musicians at one of the beautiful outdoor parks or take in Garden
Music Nights at the Royal Botanical Gardens. Check out the events calendar at burlington.ca for
performance details. Refer to our blogs and social media for more details on our arts and culture
activities and events.

WATCH HISTORY COME ALIVE
SEE & DO
One of the earliest areas of Ontario to be settled, Burlington has a vibrant history and preserves
it in both its museums and historic streets. Joseph Brant Museum is a replica of the home of one
of Canada’s most colourful heroes, Captain Joseph Brant who was an aboriginal leader and United
Empire Loyalist who helped the British fight in the American Revolutionary War. He built his home
on land he was granted by King George III, just a few hundred yards south-west of the present day
museum. The museum boasts many exhibits and houses more than 10,000 artifacts.
Stroll the historic streets of downtown Burlington to discover some of its first homes, and
churches dating back to the late 1800s using A Walking Tour of Burlington Downtown brochure
that is available from the Visitor Information Centre or download from our website. The
Burlington Historical Society has published a number of interesting books on the area available
for purchase at our Visitor Centre.
Travel through three distinct time periods with a visit to Ireland House at Oakridge Farm, (circa
1835-1837), a living history museum and 3.68 acres of woodland, gardens and picnic areas. Tours
of the property, living historical demonstrations, special events and educational programs are
offered.
North of the city visit the Streetcar & Electric Railway Museum where you can take a ride and
explore the 1912 Grand Trunk railway station or Country Heritage Park with its 80 acres of farm
heritage.
