Always a good day. Southern Districts Junior Football Presentations Southern Districts Junior Football teams got together at Lake View Hall at Freds Pass for the end of season presentation. There were lots of players, coaches, committee members and parents in attendance. The president Ray McCasker welcomed everyone and thanked them for all the hard work they had put in during the season. That was reflected in the fact that two teams reached the grand finals. The Under 16 Div 2 team played St Mary’s in the grand final having played exceptionally well in earlier finals by coming from behind in the last quarters. Unfortunately St Mary’s were a much stronger opponent and Districts went down by 84 points. The Under 14’s Div 1 were more successful. They defeated Nightcliff by 41points to take out the Premiership Flag. They have the bragging rights to say they were the only Southern Districts Team to win a Grand Final this year. President Ray McCasker thanked everyone and presented the Club Person of the Year Award as well as certificate for club and team volunteers, medical staff and the sub committee for the Gala Ball. The Premier Team reached the finals but unfortunately the good form before the finals didn’t carry into the finals and they bowed out against Wanderers. The Under 18s did very well this season and reached the Grand Final. But although leading the Big River Hawks in the last quarter, they weren’t able to hold on and Big River Hawks came home with plenty of wind in their sails to win their first premiership. After four rounds, Reserve Grade is on top of the ladder while U18s, U14s and U10s are all coming second. There is still plenty of time for the others to improve. The club is moving along steadily with developing its home ground just below the soccer grounds at Freds Pass. The irrigation is installed, the topsoil should be spread soon and maybe in a bit over 12 months depending on the surface condition, the Swampdogs will have two fine rugby fields. For information about the club give Craig Rixon a ring on 0428 335 605. Humpty Doo Lawn Bowls Jo’s cheer squad Friday night lawn bowls Stan Smolsk (President) in action Humpty Doo Bowls Club is always looking for new members. If you would like to join up or just try out, you would be made most welcome. Social bowls is held on every Wednesday and Friday evening starting at 7 for 7.30. The cost is $5 and the club has a licence. No doubt there will be quite a few visitors during the dry season as the caravan trains move north. Interstate visitors are always welcome and they add some new blood to the competition - not that it’s a blood sport. Also if you haven’t got bowls there are plenty of sets at the clubhouse and if you haven’t played before there are lots of people who will teach you the art of lawn bowls. For more Information ring Stan on 0407 580 776. South Darwin C’s South Darwin C Grade Softball Team, which is really Litchfield, had it first outing at Tracey Village last week. Obviously the three training runs they had leading up to the match weren’t quite enough for last year’s premiers to stop the St Mary's team applying the ‘Lord have MERCY’ rule to them. But do not fear, this is the same tactic used last year to lull the other teams into a false sense of security. If you would like to join or your are an experienced pitcher then pop down to the Howard Reserve on Whitewood Road on Wednesdays or ring Jo Burgess on 0448 181 344. Rural Garden Club visits Parliament House Madam Speaker checking the length of President John’s address In the meantime the gardener nods off While we enjoy a cup of tea on the lawns The Rural Garden Club Official Photo The Rural Garden Club usually holds its monthly meeting in a rural garden but this time the Speaker Kezia Purick, kindly invited the rural gardeners to Parliament House to check out the gardens there. Whilst some gardening was discussed I think so much time was spent eating and drinking the morning tea the garden was a bit forgotten. But the two gardeners who are responsible for the beautifully manicured gardens were there to answer any questions so horticultural information was exchanged. After that Kezia took everyone on a tour of the Assembly and the Speaker’s Office and then waved them off, on the return bus trip to Coolalinga. I think everyone had an enjoyable day. Coolalinga on the go First house started 28th January 2013 Fairweather Crescent Havelock Street These buildings due to go soon There have been a lot of stories going around lately about the Coolalinga development. I am reliably informed by Gwelo, the company building the shopping centre at Coolalinga, that work will start in May with the demolition of some of the buildings on the site. Kennards should be starting to relocate to a new site near Stavri Shops this month. The owner of the NT Stockfeeds does not appear to have made a decision yet about relocation. In the meantime the shopping centre development should start in June with the construction of McDonalds and Coles Express. There were rumours that Coles and Kmart had pulled out. That is incorrect. Gwelo say they will definitely be there along with many specialty shops. So hopefully that lets everyone know what is going to happen and when you see the golden arches go up then you know it’s for real. Meantime the houses at the rear are being constructed at a rapid rate and it shouldn’t be too long before people start moving in. Bombers vs Lions Marcus and Joseph in action Bombers Under 9s Lions Under 9s Combined Lions and Bombers Under 12s Marcus Simpson and Joseph Salmon The annual award for the best sportsperson adjudged out of all the players in the Ozkick competition between the Howard Springs Lions and the Humpty Doo Bombers was held at the St Francis of Assisi oval at Humpty Doo. The Under 9s played the first game followed by the Under 12s which meant there had to be one winner from about 90 players. That can be a little difficult especially when there are so many enthusiastic players. So this year there were two winners, Marcus Simpson from the Lions and Joseph Salmon from the Bombers. The Ozkick programme means AFL is being played all year round and there seems to be lots of happy young people enjoying the game. Low water levels Not Nightcliff Beach, Darwin River Dam Last year This year The Darwin River Dam has not overflowed this year due to the dry Wet Season. Whilst that might be a concern previously, the dam is still 85% full and would have overflowed if the spillway level was at its old height which was raised an extra 1.3m three years ago. What would be a concern is if we had another dry Wet Season this year. One way to alleviate that concern would be for the Government to promote the wise use of water including using more native plants along roadways and parks and gardens with the Government setting the example. Legacy Cricket Match The SCG Until recently an Anzac Day Cricket Match was held on an old WII cricket pitch south of Noonamah, called Strauss Cricket Ground (SCG). The match was held between a Litchfield President’s XI and an Army XI to raise money for Legacy. But with so many troops serving overseas it has become difficult to get the numbers on Anzac Day. But it’s hoped that the day will be revived, perhaps on a different day, as it appears that the new Brigadier John Frewen and the RSM like their cricket, so here’s hoping.
