President’s Report
It has been a wonderful
65th year for East
Sandringham Junior
Football Club with 3
lightning premierships,
8 teams in finals
culminating in 7 Grand
Final appearances and
countless enjoyable moments for our
young players, parents, grandparents and
volunteers, both on the field and socially as a
Club. Now we are regularly registering near
600 players and fielding 24 boys and girls
football, and netball teams (4), and are a well
established Bayside fixture!
What continues to be encouraging is
the dedication and selfless efforts of our
coaches, team managers, trainers, support
teams, committee and volunteers, who
put in countless hours to put the Zebs on
the field each season. Like any volunteer
organisation, many hands make light work
and the gift of diversity and skills creates a
great benefit for such a Club.
Zebbies Values
Even while we close out 2013 I would
appeal to all our parents to get actively
involved with your kids teams and the Club,
it is a memorable experience watching and
contributing to their development. From
the early stages of Auskick through to age
group football, it is a truly rewarding family
experience. Our Club is and should be a
place for personal growth, friendship and
learning. It is important to contribute, and
play a part as what you put in will return
tenfold in memories of a lifetime.
I think it is important to highlight what we
want to be as a Club and we should seek to:
• create a great learning and family
experience from Auskick to U17s;
• promote the values of sportsmanship/
fair play, enjoyment and positive
development;
• ensure there is no tolerance for self
interest, negativity and poor behaviour,
and
• every parent, player and official has a
responsibility to ensure the Club remains
strong and lives these values.
Our achievements
In 2013 we have made great progress on
the initiatives we outlined at the start of the
season. With an interesting Easter timing
to navigate on the calendar, the footy year
started with pre season match practice
against East Brighton and a Chick Kick hit
out at Boss James to launch the girls footy
season.
Whilst footy is always the focus, our size
dictates that we need to be financially
strong and well managed. Our financial
position, managed by our Treasurer Andrew
Sutcliffe, will see a reasonable profit, which
has been managed whilst investing in a
range of important initiatives this season. I
am pleased to report that we have built on
the foundation we set last year to create
an investment base we can use to minimise
registration costs, purchase new equipment,
invest in benefits back to members such as
the official polos and match day jackets and
constructively map out the replacement of
sponsors, jumpers and coaching needs of the
football department in coming years. To this
end, a structured approach to expenditure
and prioritisation has been established to
enable the Club operate and invest in our
kids development.
This year’s achievements are many for the
club:
• 3 lightning premierships (U9 East, U9
White, U10 South)
• 8 teams participating in finals (U11 East,
U11 North, U12 South, U13 Div 1, U13
Div 3, U13 Div 5, U14 Div 4 and U 15
Girls), with 7 grand final appearances
• joint u17 Zebs/Highett team constructed
by Tony Hoar to ensure representation at
u17 level in a period of difficult numbers
– ( known as the ‘ZebDogs’ )
• continued strong registrations in boys
and girls footy (550+), with a noticeable
changing of the guard as our older age
teams required additional efforts to field
teams
• near 200 Auskickers, with a regular flow
of 40-50 into our U9s
• record sponsorship – increased from
$15K (2012) to over $40K in 2013 with a
number of multi-year arrangements
• Player participation in the SMJFL youth
forum
• in a time of ground shortages we worked
with council for a new ground allocation
with addition of Petersen Reserve (No 2)
seeing our u9/10s playing on a new upper
oval as a first year opportunity
• specialist trainer nights with Bluff Rd
Physio (new sponsor)

Sponsors
This year, our major sponsor for many years,
Hocking Stuart indicated that it was time
to allow others to sponsor the Club. Steve
Tickell, a Club life member, has contributed
far and wide in supporting the Club through
his own involvement and that of his firm
for over 20 years. We thank Steve for his
dedication, efforts and support and wish him
the best for the future.
Notwithstanding this change, we have
been busy building a sustainable group
of sponsors along with delivering a major
connection for their businesses into the Club
and its members. We have further initiatives
in 2014 which will offer benefits to both
our members and our sponsors. Equally, our
Club members who have signed up for a
developing coterie now have their businesses
displayed on our website’s business directory.
As an indication of the attractiveness of
our Club and good faith of those sponsors,
the number of sponsors wanting to be
involved has tripled this year as a result of
the great work of Roger Adams. We welcome
particularly Adam Gillon, Director of Buxton
– Highett/Hampton office as a major Club
sponsor and U10 coach in 2013.
• Digs maintenance
• Property-logic (new sponsor)
• Pegasus Group (new sponsor
Contributors
Whilst I would like to comment on every
contribution made to support the Club, I am
unable. But with due respect to all the Club’s
volunteers I would like to call out the efforts
of a number of long term volunteers this
year, 3 of which are being nominated for Life
Membership.
Mark Hardeman (proposed Life Member)
has just about done it all for the Club, but
this year added a new skill, line marker
extraordinaire! With a swish new machine
and the serenity of a Saturday afternoon
Mark scooted around Duncan St marking
up a storm. However, seriously, Mark is
a worthy nominee, having started at the
Club before having his own children, he has
coached, trained, managed property, acted as
first aider and a stint on the committee for a
number of years.
Tony Hoar (proposed Life Member) is also
somewhat of an institution around the Club
from his playing days to his continuing
involvement on and off the field, and to cap
this off, Tony mobilised and assembled a
workable U17 combined team with Highett
this season. Given the broader League
difficulties in retaining this age group, we
thank him as a Club and acknowledge his
efforts in a nomination for Life Member.
Grant Waddell (proposed Life Member)
likewise has been a regular fixture in the
Club in a range of capacities, most recently
running the canteen, co-ordinating fixtures
last year and involvement in his son’s teams.
Grant is valued member and his dedication
and efforts have been much appreciated
by many, particular those who appreciate
a good egg and bacon roll on a Saturday
Auskick session or Sunday game.
Saskia Coleman has ably assisted Michael in
registrations over recent years and managed
our transition to the Sporting Pulse
registration process provided through the
League. Saskia’s patience and administrative
skills have helped streamline the process
for our sizeable registration population now
approaching 600 p.a.
Rob Knight is stepping down off the
Committee after 5 years preceded by
multiple years running first aid, a Club and
Auskick coach. We thank Rob for his efforts
and dedication over this time, as another
who has given a great voluntary service to
our Club. His efforts particularly in recent
time covering the introduction of first aid
ground co-ordinators and medical needs of
the Club have been most appreciated.
Michael Osborne retires as Secretary this
year following a number of years in the Club
with boys and girls football involvement.
Michael has supported the Club and
committee significantly, in particular this
year, with the increase in administrative
engagement with the SMJFL and their
increased focus on unacceptable behaviour
resulting in a vast increase in incidents and
investigations. Whilst we are observed as
a good, family Club we have still endured
a reasonable number of incidents both
involving our members actions and other
Clubs actions. This has been a demanding
and time consuming, which Michael has
accommodated notwithstanding the
demands of his day job. A very big thankyou
to his balance, expertise and patience as the
Club’s Secretary.
Finally, our Auskick Co-ordinator Paul
Tammesild is stepping down this year and
passing the mantle following a number
of years as the cheery face of Auskick and
pathway to Zebbies. Paul has ensured
we have an enviable program and our
reputation in this space sees families
travel far and wide to join our program.
Additionally, our marquee game at season’s
end with Hampton Rovers sees our budding
little footballers experience Zebbies first
hand.

How the Zebras earned their stripes
From the Official Journal of the Sandringham
Football Club - ZEBRA ‘68
The name “the Zebras” is shared with
one of the VFL’s most established clubs,
the Sandringham Football Club. How
and when did this colourful club name
first become associated with us? On the
Monday following the opening match of the
1934 season, when Sandy easily defeated
Brighton, The Melbourne Sun News Pictorial
stated: “Richmond as Tigers now have a rival
in the animal kingdom, for Sandringham
in the new yellow & black striped guernsey
resembled Zebras. The way they galloped
away from Brighton to win showed they
could emulate that animal. The team in
future will be known as the Zebras.”
Go the mighty Zebbies!

The Garage Smart Gentlemen’s Dinner for 2013
Firstly we’d like to thank the team from
Garage Smart – Fiona Wilson and Gavin
Coote - for their support of the 2013
Zebs Gentlemen’s Dinner. We hope this
partnership can be as long and as fruitful
as others that have been enjoyed at the Zebs.
Following on from the success of our
inaugural year in 2012, there was always
going to be the worry that the evening may
experience something experienced by many
sportsmen … “the second year blues”. This,
I can assure you, was not the case! 140 of
East Sandringham’s finest converged on the
“second home of football”, Sandringham
Football Club (Sandy by the Bay), to engage
in some banter and some gentlemanly
revelry.
Second year host, Matt Tilley (Under 15
girls footy coach extraordinaire), was back
on board and through the aid of one, Peter
Butler, we secured the services of two
sporting identities, very central to current
topics: cricketing great Rodney Hogg and
Player Manager to the stars, Liam Pickering.
Hoggy regaled us with stories of his “time
in the sun” with the Australian cricket team:
his stellar 1978/79 Ashes tour where taking
wickets was like shelling peas (41) but so,
too, was getting into some mischief. Being
a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, he

there was a falling out between he and the

about the direction on which it was heading
even more so. Player rotations, the growth of

and the dearth in our batting were but a
few of the issues raised and Hoggy made his
opinions clearly known.

The Big Bash and Ladies Dinner for 2013
On Friday, 31 May, the Club held the Zebbies’
Big Bash for 2013.
After the amazing success of 2012, the
Committee decided that our theme of a
“casual night at the local pub” would be run
again.
Sandy ByThe Bay proved to be a perfect
venue with the pool tables in constant use
all night! With live music provided by The
Noisy Johnnies, the crowd danced the night
away.
Copious and delicious finger food by

Zebbies’ Ladies Dinner
Friday, 16 August marked a big occasion on
the Zebbies’ Calendar.
For 85 mums, it was a time to come together
and lament the never-ending washing of the
muddy footy clothes and share stories of the
great fun that was experienced throughout
the footy season.
It was a time of much pride as many
discussed the woes of being Zebbies’ mums.
There was much laughter and fun and it
was a great way to end the footy season.
As Zebbies’ mums, we look forward to
another season of footy and really enjoyed
the opportunity to meet some of the newer
Zebbies’ herd, especially those from the
Under 9 and 10 teams.
A big thank you to the Steering Committee
of Social Ladies, aptly led by Jodi Hurd, Jen
Sallabank, Bronte Sutcliffe and Sharon Pryor,
for organising this function, and to True
South for hosting the function.

2013 Football Department Report
East Sandringham Junior
Football Club fielded 24
teams in 2013 making
it one of the largest and
most popular junior
sporting clubs in the
Bayside Region.
With no associated senior club, the Football
Department is able to focus all its efforts
on the development of its junior players,
ensuring every week, each team is supported
and equipped to take the field. Managing
the use of our home ground for training
and matches across all teams continues to
be a challenge, and we were fortunate this
year to be able to make use of the revamped
Peterson Street ground. We thank the
coaches and parents for their understanding
in embracing this move which we expect will
continue in the years ahead.
A “drop & go” approach to junior sport has
become a thing of the past with parental
involvement a necessity given the growing
number of match day duties which need
to be assigned across the parent group.
Although we certainly understand those
parents who do not feel they have the
football experience to assist at training and
on match day, there are many other ways for
parents to “get involved” and the Club makes
no apologies for asking each and every
parent to contribute.
At the older age groups, the Club is
conscious of the need to appoint qualified
younger coaches who can better relate to
teenage boys and girls. If you know of any
person who might be interested in getting
involved in coaching a football side, please
contact the Club.
Perhaps the greatest challenge facing not
only our Club but all football Clubs is the
retention of older boys in the game. The
SMJFL is working in conjunction with AFL
Victoria to investigate why the drop -off rate
is so high from U14 and upwards. Perhaps
not surprisingly, parental behaviour at the
older age groups was highlighted in the
player survey as being the dominant “turn
off” as abuse at umpires and opposition
players increased substantially as players
moved into the older age groups. We remain
steadfast in our belief that coach, player
and parent behaviour is the most important
factor which separates our Club from others.
Unfortunately, the number of incidents
which have had to be dealt with by the
Football Department and Committee this
year indicates that standards have slipped.
Remedying this will be a focus in 2014. For many, football starts getting serious
across the U13-16 age groups as the
introduction of intra league, development
squads and school football increases in
importance against Club allegiance. For
other, however, footy remains just a game
to be played and enjoyed against similarly
skilled opponents. The Club will continue to
strive to ensure we retain the right balance
so that players who strive to play at the
highest level possible are given the coaching
and support to do so whilst those who “just
want a kick” are likewise provided with a
supporting environment and structure.
The “Fit 4 Footy” program was offered in
2012/13 to assist all players from U12-U14
to improve their personal level of fitness,
strength and nutrition education in an
enjoyable environment. We hope to be able
to widen the scope of such programs to
include older aged boys and girls to assist in
their physical and personal development.
We trust that all players who represented
the Zebbies in 2013 got as much out of the
experience as the coaches, parents, relatives
and supporters who turned up each week to
barrack and support. You are the reason we
jump out of bed on those freezing Sunday
mornings or stand in the mud on a wet
midweek night, putting out the witches hats.
We salute you and thank you for all your
efforts in representing the mighty Zebbies.
See you next year.

Department
Auskick
It does not seem all that long ago that just
fewer than 200 fresh-faced Auskickers
assembled for the first session in April.
Some were more interested in playing in the
sand and for others the sausage in bread
afterwards seemed to be the big-ticket item.
However, enthusiasm was high and the
eagerness to play footy was obvious.
The challenge was issued to all adults
present - watch your Auskickers on Day 1
and take a mental snapshot of what they
can do.
Over the next three months each and every
participant visibly improved his or her
football. With drills and fun games designed
to engage the 5-8 year olds, our young
charges could be seen to be improving week
by week.
Of course this could only be possible
with the ongoing contribution of our
band of fabulous Auskick volunteers. The
commitment and skill of these guys each
week was fabulous. This could not all have
occurred without Alex Arnhold behind the
scenes making it all happen. Thank you to
all who have made the Auskick season such
a success!
With great numbers in attendance each
week, even the nasty weather didn’t deter
our youngsters. With heavy morning rain
forcing the cancellation of a session 15
minutes prior to starting (mostly for the
sake of the ground!!), this did not stop the
enthusiasm. There were will still 20 kids out
playing amongst themselves, in the rain,
while the adults stayed dry, eating egg and
bacon rolls!
There are many highlights this year, not
to mention the half-time footy at Etihad
Stadium for 42 Auskickers, and, for next
year’s Under 9s, pulling on the jumper for
the first time in the annual Auskick Derby
under lights against the Hampton Rovers.
Again the challenge was issued at the end of
year Auskick Presentation Day: recall what
our kids were doing on Week 1 compared
to where they are now. Each and every
Auskicker has improved their footy skills,
their social skills and forged new friendships.
There is no doubt our Club has a strong
future coming through!

The Richards family connection with East Sandringham Boys’ Club from 1991
The Richards family connection with East
Sandringham Boys’ Club (ESBC) started in
1991. Records may be more accurate but I
would think, at that time, we only had about
six or seven teams in the entire Club. This is
pre-Auskick and numbers in junior AFL were
struggling.
Ted started at ESBC in Grade 2 when a
Sandringham mum approached Joanna,
Ted’s mum, and asked if Ted could come and
play at ESBC in the Under 9s because if she
recruits five players, her son would receive a
free footy! So that started our journey into
ESBC and AFL.
Ted’s first year was in the lower division of
Under 9s and, like all other parents, we stood
at the kiosk at 8.30am, drinking a stiff coffee
whilst the 36 boys ran around the ground in
a pack, all chasing the same ball.
My ESBC years started as Coach when little
10-year-old Ted came home from his first
training session for the Under 10s and
said “Dad, the coach from last year has
moved interstate and there is no coach so
I told the ESBC committee that you would
be the coach”. This was at a time when
junior football was struggling. There was
no Auskick and numbers were dropping as
mums were happier with non-contact soccer.
So we started the season with about 17
players. Either just before the first game, or
just after it, about five kids walked into the
Club from East Sandringham Primary. They
bolstered the numbers to give us an even
chance.
Ted was young enough to play with the
Under 9s but wanted to play with his mates
who were in the Under 10s, so off the season
started . We were in the lower division and
due to incredible coaching, we won the
premiership . In those days, there was a
challenge cup between the premier of the
top division and the premier of the bottom
division. This was played at the Highett oval
against the mighty South Melbourne Under
10s a week after the grand finals. Incredible
coaching, once again, came to the fore
and even though we were expected to be
thumped , we thumped them!! Ted often
says that rates as one of his best memories
of all time - even more than winning the
premiership as a Swannie against the Hawks
in 2012!!!!!!!!! I don’t think so …
Ted’s years of ESBC continued until Under
14s. Ted was lucky enough to have won a
few premierships, a League Best & Fairest
and ESBC Best & Fairest in his junior years.
Numbers dropped off at Under 15s and
as we couldn’t field a team; Ted and a few
others shifted to Hampton Rovers. I have
no doubt that Ted has fond memories of
his days at ESBC. I see the coach of South
Melbourne Under 10s now and again. He
often says that they hated playing ESBC
because we would put Ted at centre-half
back and he would mark everything that
came down and then run it down the ground
for a goal: the origin of sling-shot attack
hence started in ESBC Under 10s.
Ted went on to play for Dragons in the
TAC cCp and was drafted to Essendon in
the 2000 draft as pick number 23.. After
five years, Ted decided he needed to move
on even though he was offered another
contract. He was chased by the Swans and
happily moved to play in his first year in
the 2006 Grand Final. Last year, he was
named all Australian Centre Half Back and
won the 2012 Grand Final. By the time you
are reading this, he will have played his
200th AFL game: a massive achievement
considering only a small percentage of
players get to play 200 AFL games.
About a year after Ted started at ESBC, Ted’s
older brother, Jake, began playing. He was
two years older and he played for a couple
of years at ESBC. Interestingly, he now plays
AFL footy in Sweden and recently he won
his 4th premiership there. It also has been
the conduit for Jake to find a very good job
in Sweden. Football, at any level, is a great
social interaction.
Football was a very important thing in our
family and, on one particular game day as
I walked out the door with Ted to go to his
game, Joanna, being nine months pregnant,
advised that she thought she was in the
early stages of labour. I asked her to just give
me ring if she needed me! As all the parents
knew Joanna was expecting our fifth child
East Sandringham Junior Football Club
Yearbook 2013
Joanna did the right thing by the coach. By
the time we finished the game, she was in
full labour. Xav was born a few hours later.
When Xav’s turn came to play at ESBC, Ted
was at Essendon in his first year.
Once again, Xavier started like Ted in the
Under 9s … and back to 8.30am games on a
Sunday morning, standing next to the kiosk
with the same mug of coffee. Somehow my
coaching career was resurrected and I was
coaching the Under 10s the next year. The
journey began again.
Xav’s team was one of 20+ teams at the Club
and there were three strong divisions in each
age group. How things had changed in the
ten years! The rooms had been enlarged and
the parents were looking younger!!! We went
back to pie nights and sausage sizzles after
training. Once again, we met a great group
of parents who assisted on game day and
at training. When Xavier reached Under 13s,
he came home from school and asked if he
could swap clubs and play with his mates
from secondary school. So we switched to
Prahran Junior Football Club. Like Ted, Xav
went onto Dragons in the TAC cup and was
picked to play for Victoria in the Australian
Under 18 championships. His TAC team was
fortunate enough to win the premiership in
the TAC cup Under 18s that year, which Xav
played a large part in.
Xavier was drafted as a rookie in November
last year by the Swans with his big brother.
He was upgraded in June to the senior list
and played his first game with his brother
against the Blues. It’s hard to describe the
pride and excitement of seeing them both
run out together.
The Richards family has very fond memories
of ESBC, of the friends we met there and of
the many family functions we attended. The
ESBC family extends far and wide and the
great feeling of community is still felt, even
in life after ESBC.
Thank you, East Sandy Football Club!

What a great year we had, girls! This year
our team consisted of a ‘magnificent seven’
of players who gave their all every week.
The team started off the season with
lots of enthusiasm and genuine desire to
learn how to play football. With the U10
girls’ competition growing to four teams,
we had the opportunity to play each of
our opponents two or three times over
the course of the season. The U10 girls’
games were always played in great spirit –
whenever the opposition had spare players,
we always had one or two join us with
smiles on their faces. Here’s a summary of
how our U10 girls went about their footy
this year.
Anna played most the season as our full
forward. With her team being able to
consistently deliver the ball into our forward
line, she was always a good chance to
convert the opportunity into a goal and she
finished the home and away season with 50
to her name.
Isabelle joined the team a few games in and
made an immediate impact to the team. She
fitted in straight away and proved to be a
determined player who always got in and
under the pack to keep the ball from the
opposition.
18
East Sandringham Junior Football Club
Yearbook 2013
JT brought her speed and absolute
determination to the team every week. She
used her skill to get possession of the ball
and then ran into space to allow her time to
kick the ball forward to her team mates.
Katie has been the most reliable member of
the team this season. Playing in the ruck,
which she often did for entire day, she was
able to influence every game by getting
possession of the ball and delivering it
forwards effectively.
Mikayla’s first season with the team has seen
her play in positions all over the ground. Her
best footy was when she played as rover,
cleared the ball from the centre and ran
down the ground to kick into the forward
line.
Sabrina has shown terrific improvement
over the season. She has become a reliable
defender who consistently stopped the
opposition attacks and showed great
courage in the Lightning Carnival in very wet
conditions.
Sarah came to play every week with a
positive attitude and a smile on her face.
She played mainly in the backline where she
developed the confidence to get into the
right position and attack the ball and stop
the opposition with great success.
Well done to all the girls for coming
runners up in the Lightning Carnival,
including a wonderful game where we
were outnumbered by three players but still
managed to come away with a win in wet
and windy conditions.
Many thanks to Michael McConnell for
acting as a great team manager and to
the parents who all helped throughout the
season. We hope to see all the girls back in
2014!

Had some fun, learnt a few skills and played
some awesome footy: those words pretty
much summed up our year in the U12 girls
footy team.
From the start of the year, we saw a group
of girls quickly become a team who were
dedicated to having fun, learning and giving
their all every Saturday. Coaching them was
a pleasure.
Newcomers were quickly welcomed into the
team, training was always well attended and
importantly we loved playing for our great
club.
The Zebbies’ song was sung many times
throughout the year. Even when we didn’t,
we knew we had always gone down fighting
and never, never left anything out on the
ground.
Jihan loved taking marks and kicking goals
and Hannah’s ability to repel opposition
attacks across half back was tremendous.
And then there was P.E.T, our cuddly zebra
mascot who started the season looking a
little boring and conservative and who, by
the end, looked liked a rock star having been
dressed up each week by its winner.
Of course, no great team is complete without
a little help. Thanks to all those parent
helpers for your tireless work and assistance.
Finally, to our band of U12 sisters: well done
on your year - you were great.
Chris Raywood - Coach
The highlights were many. Jess became a
find at full forward. Kate and Molly always
reliable, whether down back or in the
ruck. Annabelle, Makayla, Shae and Seinna
always full of run. Hard at the ball were
Maegan, India, Ellie and Jasmine. Elisha and
Sophie were slick with their handballs and
occasional goals. Tamsyn and Nina became
sharp shooters from a forward pocket.
Natalie, Tahlia and Alexandra patrolled the
wings and half back, winning plenty of ball.

Where do we start with a season that
has more highlights than a One Direction
hairdressing manual?
As this report goes to press, the girls stand
on the cusp of greatness as they face St
Peter’s in the big one! But how did we
get there? A culmination of footballing
brilliance and a love of mud would be the
short answer.
The season began with the flair of the
Mouse, Princess George, Sienna C (version
1) and Tori all running amok in the dry
conditions. The mercurial Brooke kicked a
bag of 9 one week whilst still maintaining
perfect hair. Scores were high and peaked
with a record score of 35.25.211 to 0.0.0
against the hapless Waverly Falcons – never
matched by any side in the history of the
comp.
In another first, Molly was the only player
ever recorded to receive awards from both
coaches for her selfless and courageous
game: and therein lies the key to this team –
courage. Whether it was the bone-crunching
tackles of the Vice, the wrecking ball charges
by the “concrete sisters” K-Dogg and Loz
or the 3rd, 4th and 5th efforts of Summer,
the Zebbies never took a backwards step
(sometimes Summer did because she was
going the wrong way!)
20
East Sandringham Junior Football Club
Yearbook 2013
Rach never tired in the ruck and somehow
was always at the bottom the pack she had
tapped the ball down to, and who can forget
her match-winning smother against the
Vampires in the prelim final!
Steph and Charlotte grew more dominant
and disciplined as the season grew longer
(note to all Mums who have read Fifty
Shades of Grey – this is the kind of discipline
and dominance young ladies should aspire
to!).
The real stability of this team came from the
efforts of a few veterans who really stepped
up this season. Kate’s marking and kicking
saw her sneak up forward late in the finals,
but she always went where the team needed
her. Killer sought a mid-season high altitude
break in Paris but returned with fire in her
belly (her dad thinks this must be a typo and
it should say “high attitude”).
And let’s not forget the mosquito fleet of
Maddy, Goose and the Twinkle – despite
coming up against girls twice their size with
shaving rash they always snatched at that
footy and never let go – good luck coming
up against them in future Boxing Day sales.
The General, Sienna C (version 2) and
Annabelle were the great improvers of this
year. Sienna getting faster and faster the less
luggage she had in her hair and Annabelle
stepping up to become a quality mid fielder.
The General … well let’s just remember that
last training session and what she did for
those tickets … it used to be only the mafia
who made people “sleep with the fishes”.
Thanks to mighty Mick for his enthusiasm,
wisdom and loose understanding of the
rules about coaching whilst being the
runner. Sue was a pillar of strength against a
bureaucratic tsunami and Andrew Courtney
unwavering in his belief. Thanks also to all
the parents for allowing dirty car upholstery.
Girls, congratulations … and I hope your love
of mud has helped reduce the seven visible
signs of ageing!

Whilst the East Sandringham Football Club
may have had literally hundreds of teams
in its 65 year history, and many in that
time may have dominated their respective
divisions, the 2013 Under 9 White team will
have to go down as one of the greats!
When they first gathered on a hot
Wednesday afternoon in mid-March, some
told me they had never played footy before!
What! Never played footy?
But it didn’t take long; in fact, it was almost
instant. This team gelled incredibly.
Our first match against arch rivals,
Beaumaris, saw us give them a football
lesson. Oscar Tilley and Joshua Lai got old
fashioned leather poisoning and dominated
the match in front of a vocal home crowd at
Duncan St.
And it continued on the following week
where Aaron Hudghton, Ollie WoodcockDavis, Vaughan Brent, Dan Whitson and
Thomas Antonis put on a football clinic to
beat Hampton rovers.
This theme went on most weeks with
the likes of Brady Trapani, Sam Keating,
Jackson McGregor and Billy Bright showing
incredible improvement game after game.
Meanwhile Sean Lai, Jake Calver, Adriano
Mandarino and Will McPhee showed
their skills most weeks by dominating the
midfield and giving our forwards plenty of
opportunities to score. And score they did,
with our scores on average twice that of our
opposition.
You can’t have a successful side without a
great defence and we were no exception.
And when in defence, Will Gordon, Ben
Carroll, Lachie Smith, Thomas Barnes,
Matty Fuller and Xavier Marie were
masters in repelling opposition thrusts and
transforming them into full on attacks.
Opposition sides like St Peters, Prahran and
St.Paul’s just couldn’t match it with the
Zebbies even when we had as many as 10
players missing due to illness/holidays. It
didn’t matter because the likes of Matty
Goss, Ted Robertson and Xavier Carter grew
in confidence every week and helped ensure
results still went our way.
We will all remember the day the boys forgot
not to bounce the ball, the game we won but
didn’t know till long after the final siren and
the one we lost because the umpire couldn’t
hear the siren.
A magnificent home and away season
finished 9-3, but the best was yet to come.
The Lightning Premiership held at Port
Melbourne was a day to remember. Games
against St Peter’s and East Sandringham’s
crosstown rivals, East Brighton and
Beaumaris, who had beaten us twice during
the year, proved what we thought we all
knew and that was that this side was a very
special team.
In systematic fashion, each final was played
with professionalism and a purpose way
beyond their age.
At no stage in any game were we behind; at
no stage in any game did these boys not play
as a team. So focused and so determined
to play for the East Sandringham jumper
that, on reflection, there was no way the
Lightning Premiership would go to any other
team.
Many thanks to Susie Tilley for all her tireless
work, Paul Antonis as Assistant Coach and
all other parents and helpers for a most
incredible first season of football.
It was an absolute honor to be coach of
these wonderful boys!

The pre-season officially commenced for the
Blues on Wednesday, 20 March, and it provided
a great opportunity for all of the lads to
formally introduce themselves to their fellow
teammates and coaches.
Both Coach Wakelin and Miot were impressed
with the early energy and enthusiasm levels
and the group’s desire to learn - although the
listening skills of the majority had clearly been
left in their lunch boxes!
We highlighted the importance of being
respectful to our team mates and coaches at
both game day and training and this became
the foundation of our team rules for season
2013.
We reinforced the importance of developing
our key skills of marking, kicking , hand balling
and the lads reinforced the importance of
match practice, British bulldog and banana
kicks - clearly we had some work to do!
The pre-season finished with the annual grudge
match V the Brighton Vampires and we were
convincingly beaten by a 2nd year Under 9s
team, but some very important observations
and lessons were taken from the game that
would support the ongoing development of
the team.
The 2013 season commenced at Port
Melbourne vs South Melbourne and it was an
opportunity to reinforce to the parents the
coaches’ team approach for the year. The lads

would have the opportunity to experience
all positions on the field every week and
would be provided with the most positive and
encouraging environment to learn and develop
as individuals and as a team, combined with a
healthy balance of discipline.
The boys were shell shocked vs South
Melbourne who had clearly put in a long
pre-season. Our second year players, Henry
O, Jackson P and Lachy Cowell, performed
admirably under pressure, strongly supported
by Radford Powell and Lachy Celentano. It was
a tough initiation for all of our first year players
but it provided the coaches and team with the
most important lessons of the year.

against the undefeated South Melbourne.
The boys teamed magnificently to secure a one
point win which highlighted the enormous
improvement of all individuals in the side and
the team as a whole. What a deserved way
to finish the home & away season! The boys
celebrated like never before.
For the rest of the season, we were to focus on
3 key areas: 1. Play on at every opportunity 2. Man up when the opposition has the ball 3. Win the footy first
The Lightning carnival was the highlight of
the year for the boys although extremely
disappointing for all of them (and their
parents!).
Arguably the biggest challenge for the first
game was the introduction of Lenny’s pug
at the ¼ time break - just the additional
distraction we needed when attempting to
capture the attention of the lads at their first
ever ¼ time address!
The lads played some of their best football
for the year over the three games but
unfortunately were beaten in one of the last
kicks of the day. Most importantly, they never
gave in and tried their absolute hardest which
was a consistent quality of the team all year.
An added level of engagement, listening and
excitement came over the group at postgame presentations. They had all come to
the realisation that they were playing for
something far more significant than the thrill
of a win, the Zebbies’ jumper or of singing
It was incredibly satisfying reflecting on how
far the group had progressed over a 16-week
period as a team and individually, observing
the new friendships they have formed and the
enjoyment that winning provided, but also the
important lessons gained from losing games.

Continuation of Under 9 Blue season.
I want to thank all the parents of the Under 9s
Blues team for their contribution on match day
and their ongoing support throughout the year
and for the opportunity to coach a wonderful
group of boys. A special mention to Lucky for
his consistent encouragement of all the boys
and his overall enthusiasm for the team.
A very special mention: to Melissa Owen who
has been incredibly organised and supportive
and made coaching the boys a thoroughly
enjoyable experience;
to Mark Miot who has been an incredibly
positive and supportive coach for the kids and
to myself;
to Dave Nanfra and Paul Cowell for the running
duties throughout the year and the coaching at
training support during the week;
to Ian Celentano and Michael Kuzilny for the
contribution as first aiders during the year.
Good luck and best wishes to all of the boys
moving up to Under 10s next year and I look
forward to watching their development and
progress with interest. To all of the boys
remaining in Under 9s, I look forward to
another year coaching and developing you all.
Shane Wakelin - Coach
2013 saw our team of boys return from last
year for their second season. We lost a couple
of boys from last year but our team was
strengthened with the introduction of Timon
and Marcus from Under 9 East 2012 and Ollie
& Max A for their first season of Aussie rules
football.
effort. We played as a commited football team
and no more evident than in our last game
where the true development of the side was
shown. We had to come from behind and, in
the last few minutes, we kicked a couple of
goals. It was a great finish to the year and
thoroughly deserved.
We finished 2012 on a high with a great
performance in our Lightning Premiership with
expectations that we needed to perform in the
top division.
As coach, I would like to thank all the
parents for their assistance in preparing and
supporting the side over the course of the
season. Stuart and Phil match day and training
with the support of John Hunter throughout
the year made coaching that much easier.
The support of the 2 team Managers, Lisa and
Tanya, without a doubt made for a successful
season as there is a lot to do behind the
scenes.
The objective of the year was to continue
development as individuals and team players.
Our focus continued on the basics - kicking
and handpassing both preferred and nonpreferred. It was about honing marking
skills, holding positions and putting your
body on the line to help a mate. It was about
commitment to each other.
The boys and coaches took their time to deliver
but eventually we did. With a team of 24, it
was a juggling act throughout the season but
one where all contributed with a commitment
to the team. In what was an evenly matched
completion, we finished the year with 4 wins,
1 draw and 7 losses. We were able to beat two
of the teams we lost to earlier in the season
and were only uncompetitive to the top two
teams, Mordi Brae and Prahran.
Off to the Lightning Premiership we went and
it was 3 wins from 3 games and the flag. What
a great finish to the year with a true team
Having such fantastic support not only made
my job a whole lot easier; it ensured the
boys played and trained in such an enjoyable
environment. It has been a privilege to have
coached this side over the past 2 seasons and
to have been involved with such a special
group of boys.
I have really enjoyed coaching all the boys and
looked forward to watching their skills develop
further. Congratulations to a great team of
players and their parents and I look forward to
a successful 2014 season.

2012 had been the boys’ first season of
competitive footy and was just about having
a bit of fun and getting to know each other
while working on the key skills of the game.
Three wins and a draw for the year was seen
as a reasonable start to their footy careers,
but we were certainly hoping for a more
consistent year in 2013.
The first training session of 2013 revealed a
couple of things. Firstly that we had 23 of
the 24 boys return for a second year; a great
result to keep the guys together. The second
thing revealed was substantial growth and
improvement in the group over the summer
months – the boys were ready to step it up a
few notches.
An opening round thriller against a fast
finishing St Peter’s and a solid round 2
win against Mordi-Brae had us start the
year 2-0 and perhaps had me feeling a
bit too comfortable. The round 3 loss to
Murrumbeena Gold was on the back of
superior team structure. They were well
drilled in holding their positions and not
simply ball chasing and it was the first time
we’d seen an Under 9’s group create a “wall”
of mid-fielders when the ball was in their
forward line. All day we struggled to get the
ball out of defence. So the loss proved to be
the kick in the pants that we needed.
24

Assistant coach, Tim Caldwell, was
instrumental in bringing about change.
He identified the need to focus on team
structure which helped shape the rest of
the season. And with me away for the next
three weeks, Tim stepped up as coach and
implemented.
By the time I returned, we were 5-1 with
many of the boys starting to get the concept
of structures and the results showing,
including a much easier victory over St
Peter’s in the round 1 return match to
highlight just how much we’d improved.
Round 8 saw a trip to play the arch enemy,
Hampton Rovers, who were undefeated and
playing some really good footy. After leading
at the first two breaks, we were eventually
over-run, particularly in the 4th quarter to
lose the game, but we were by no means
disgraced.
Another really gutsy win in round 10 at St
Kilda City (also on 7-2 going into the game),
this time by just one point clinched a berth
in the very top grouping for the Lightning
Carnival to be held in a few weeks time.
The Lightning Carnival produced the
proudest moments of my coaching of
this group. After two very frustrating and
ultimately fruitless matches against two
sides I felt we really could have beaten,
we were faced with the task of taking on
Prahran who had swept both of their games
by big margins. As a group, the boys played
brilliantly to come out of the game with a
draw. It felt like a win.
As I said to the boys on the day, they were
rated in the top four teams in the whole
Under 9s comp and should be immensely
proud of that. But they also proved that they
could well and truly match it with the side
that finished as the first placed team.

It all started back in March when we got the
2012 Under 9 West team back together for
pre-season training at Thomas Street. It was
pleasing to see the boys staying in the same
team and clearly they had benefited from an
enjoyable summer. Taller, faster, improved
skills were a great start to the season.
After a couple of weeks of pre-season
training at Thomas Street, we started
training at Duncan Street and things started
to feel like the season was close. Our preseason match vs. East Brighton Vampires
worked out very well and the boys had a
very strong win. This probably led to some
early season confidence. However, having
the intra-club practice matches vs. U10 East
& U10 West highlighted what we needed to
work on before the season started.
Our approach to the season ensured that all
players had equal time playing in each part
of the field: backline, midfield and forward;
also each player would spend an even
amount of time on the interchange. A couple
of changes was that the boys spent half a
game in each playing zone and we grouped
the boys together, creating sub teams of 7
players who all played together irrespective
of what zone they were playing in.
The boys had strong performances across
the season, including two wins vs. St. Bedes
/ Mentone by 26 and 30 points, Cheltenham
by 45 points, Bentleigh by 22 points, East
Malvern by 20 points, Ormond by 22 points,
St. Paul’s by 13 points including the now
infamous Mother’s Day spray and Round 9
vs. Oakleigh by 60 points, when everything
just came together.
reversing the result from Round 7. This was
followed by an even bigger win vs. Dingley,
finishing off with a commanding win vs.
Oakleigh. A complete performance by the
boys, rounded off with a rousing rendition of
our club song in East Brighton’s clubrooms!
There was some grey hair growing times too,
especially vs. Ormond in round 2. They boys
were leading all day but Ormond came home
strong to lead by 6 points with 1 minute to
go. Thankfully our boys were able to score
a goal against momentum and we escaped
with a draw.
Well-done, boys, on winning your first
premiership. Many thanks to everyone
who devoted their time to making this a
memorable season including Team Manager,
Rick Lang, Team Runner, Richard Brabner,
First Aid, Liz Read, Training Specialist, Dick
Latham, Photographer, Julie Wyss and
Newsletter, Jacqui Tyack.
There also was some wake up calls delivered
in the most resounding way. Round 3 loss to
Beaumaris Great Whites by plenty, losing the
Rivalry Round to East Brighton Vampires by
29 points, getting overrun by a fast finishing
Prahran by 12 points and going down to
St Peter’s by 20 points, when 10 regular
players were away and we had to call in
reinforcements from Zebbies Under 9 teams.
We had a great time coaching the boys in
our first season and hope everyone will be
back for another successful season in 2014.

Despite taking some time to come to terms

A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE
Seems like just yesterday we were preparing
ourselves for our pre-season on the
Haileybury grounds. Some ins and outs
for the season meant we were scrambling
to make up the numbers. But 20 fine men
assembled themselves, ready to do battle
against the teams who had been selected
to play in the top echelon of the Under 10
SMJFL competition … an achievement in
itself.
The season started well with wins in our
practice matches against the Vampires and
other Zebbies Under 10 teams. However,
a total 13 rounds of football lay ahead of
us and a win against St Paul’s in the first
round was sweet revenge for the “smashing”
they gave us in last round of 2012. It was
lights- camera-action with Channel 2 down
there filming and the boys took no time
in reacquainting themselves with the Club
song.
In all, a total of nine wins for the year
gave us a fantastic win /loss ratio for the
home and away season. There was the
usual nail bitter against Brighton Beach
and a sensational game against James
Hird’s Prahran team provided us with some
“champagne Football” and a 6 goal win.

The frustration of the Hold and Release rule
is now behind us (now there is something to
celebrate) as the boys head to the big time
of Under 11s where modified rules are a
thing of the past and tackling is in which the
majority of the boys will relish. Gone, too,
are Lightning Premierships replaced with a
ladder and finals series. I think we will all
agree this will suit our game better…
Most importantly, I hope the kids have really
enjoyed their experience of playing a sport
with their mates and new found friends.
Getting out on the park and having a run
and some fun. Lots of happy memories
of singing the song and doing something
they love. It has been an absolute joy and
extremely gratifying to be able to coach the
boys over the past 2 years and teach them a
few things about footy and teamsmanship.
I would obviously like to thank all the people
who contributed to a wonderful season as it
certainly was a united effort. The amount of
dads who come down to footy training and
supported the boys in getting the most out
of the sessions certainly contributed to our
success and development of the boys’ skills
and knowledge of the game.
To Jesse: a huge thank you from everyone

as assistant coach: thank you for all you
have done. And to those of you who have
provided a great sounding board behind the

solid foundation.

2013 started with what l would call a nail
bitter. After a solid start to the game and a
good lead vs Ajax, we let them back in with
only seconds remaining and the ball in Ajax
forward line and us leading by 5 points, we
held on. So first off we got to sing our song
loud and proud.
Training was solid and you boys were all
working hard on our skills and team work
but over the next few rounds did we hit
some strong teams (well that’s what we
thought at the time) with loss after loss by
big margins we all questioned our ability.
Don’t worry, boys, you weren’t the only ones
with both myself and other dads wondering
if we could coach at all.
So what was our solution??? Where were we
headed and how could we improve and get
our confidence back??? TRAINING….
If you remember, we went back to basics and
worked on getting in hard first for the footy,
keeping our eyes on the ball till we had it in
our hands and then when we did have the
ball, what did we do better than most teams
at the end of the season? Chase, tackle,
harass and win the footy back.
From that round 8 onwards was amazing.
We did everything a great team would do
and got the rewards. We turned our season
around, back on our terms, and beat all the
teams who smashed us in the earlier part of
the season with great team work and not
one of you boys were not a part of it. Well
done.
Thank you all for a great year and to all that
helped - thanks again.
Good luck next year …
Max Hudghton - Coach
The most pleasing part of our season for
all the coaches and parents was to see you
all improve with your kicking, marking and
general team play. For the boys who played
their first season with us, one thing l always
think of that’s most important in a footy
team is spirit and mateship and that the
great thing about our game AFL is it’s all
about your mates and having fun, which l
truly hope you did, kids and parents.
Our final day for our season was, of course,
the Lighting Premiership. We didn’t come
home with the win but did we have a go.
That’s all that matters, boys.
So forward we go and given that we have
had heaps of fun this year at training playing
British bulldog, there was a reason for
that??? Yes … Under11 and goodbye to the
hold and release rule and bring on tackling.

This season would have to be one of the
most exciting & rewarding seasons of
football I have been involved in. Not only
with the teams’ success but the infectious
enthusiasm these players have for the game
of footy.
At our first training session (with all players
attending), the “T” word was mentioned &
I knew we were going to be in for a good
season, judging by the players’ reaction:
“tackle, tackle, tackle”. It had finally come
after a long hard season last year; “this year
we can tackle”.
Our 2013 season started off with some
pre-season training, cleverly organised by
our Assistant Coach, Scott Grenda. This
training, without a doubt, helped the team
prepare for our first game against Ormond
(away). What a first game it was with an
outstanding win by 60 points.
The team continued with another strong
win against Waverley Park by 35 points. Round 2 was a close game against Ajax
(at home) winning by 9 points. Round 3
was a tough game - we came up against
what was to be our closest competitor this
season, Murrumbeena. Playing on the small
Murrumbeena ground, we were taught a
valuable lesson in how to play on smaller
grounds & keeping to our positions.

This was a game the boys, to their credit,
would not forget.
In rounds 5 – 10, the coaching staff, trainers
& parents saw an awesome display of
determination, skills & tackling from every
player in the team. Each week, we saw a new
player stepping up to help the team improve
round by round. This was very clear when we
came to round 11 - “Murrumbeena at home”.
The boys had not forgotten the 35 point
loss from round 3. This was a great game of
footy, neck & neck most of the day with Luke
Langdon sneaking us a point on the siren.
The team had a 1 point win & was a game
clear on top of the ladder.
The team finished off the last 3 games of the
season in strong form with another 60 point
win over Ormond at home heading into the
finals.
The most pleasing aspect to this season for
me as coach was the team environment
that the boys created. Our team consists
of players coming from 6 different local
schools. Each week at training, before,
during & after each game, the boys bonded
to create a fantastic team environment.
Thanks to our great Team managers, Cath
McPhee & Vicki Langdon. You both did a
brilliant job this season.
I would like to also thank Scott Grenda &
Brad Langdon: Scott for being a fantastic
Assistant Coach & for filling in for me while
I was away & Brad for also filling in as coach
when needed & helping to deliver messages
as our runner.
Thanks also to Craig Holland (runner), Scott
Runciman and Andrew Lever - our trainers.
Lastly, a huge thankyou to all the parents for
filling in when needed & getting the troops
to training & the games on time. It has been
an honour & a privilege to coach your sons
over the past 2 years. Have a great summer
& see you next year.

Under 11s means tackling and finals – two
things that flare the nostrils of ten year
old kids! Accordingly, there were plenty of
keen youngsters showing up for some preseason training sessions. We were pleased
to welcome Jack and Darby to our team and
they made an immediate impression with
their enthusiasm. Pleasingly, all players were
eager to improve right from the first training
session.
Early matches were characterised by big
wins for us. The boys were teaming well
and relishing the opportunity to tackle. A
narrow loss against Beaumaris was a good
learning experience. Defensive running to
cover opponents was inadequate on this
day and we were determined not to let it
happen again (and for the rest of the season
we were much better in this area). Many of
our boys were involved in other sports such
as soccer, basketball and tennis. Whilst this
sometimes affected training availability,
the skills and game sense from these other
sports were often seen to positively carry
over into the boys’ footy.
As the home and away season progressed,
the wins started to flow with hard fought
victories against Murrumbeena, Brighton
Beach, South Melbourne and Beaumaris
providing nerve-wracking highlights
amongst some easier games. Our regular
season finished with thirteen wins and only
one loss – a great effort.
As of the date of writing this report, we are
one week into the finals series and saddling
up for a preliminary final after losing the
second semi to Brighton Beach. An ugly, hard
tackling finals game was one which didn’t
quite go our way with a more widespread
intensity at the contest required for the rest
of the finals series. Fingers crossed!
Hopefully by the time this report comes
to print, the trifecta has been achieved – a
Zebbies’ Under 11 East premiership, a Tigers’
premiership and an against the odds Ashes
win for Australia! One can only hope!

and earn plenty of kicks. Roy, too, loved
the wing and held strong in position and
controlled the ball in space.
We started the year with a loss, but from
there hit the go button and started to rack
up wins at a steady rate, and when we had
a loss it was only by a point of two, just
enough to give coaching staff and spectators
mild heart failure. Regardless of the final
outcome we had the pleasure to see some
pretty exciting football from the whole team.
Even with a lot of rotations across multiple
positions players like Lochie, Daniel and Jesse
found great form in the back line and were
hard at the ball showing endeavour and a
never give up attitude to winning the ball.
As the weeks went on the team became
less of individuals and more of a structure
that supported the delivery of the ball from
the backline all the way up the ground and
through the big sticks.
Each player brought something special to
the team with most players featured in the
best votes throughout the season. We had
great runners of the ball in Jason, Zac and
Andy who could push the ball out of packs
and drive up the ground. Up forward we had
consistent markers and scorers in Sienna,
Matt and Mitch.
With a solid forward line, we were able
to gt the ball off the deck and drive deep
into the goal square where Hudo, George
and Nick could all execute this with great
effectiveness. On the wing, players like Jack
and Eamon loved the space to take marks

Hardy and Kobe were always in the middle of
packs showing a fierce determination to get
the ball in the air and off the ground.
We had many soldiers of stability in the

Ryan and Dean who owned our last line of
defence with gritty determination.
Speed was also a winning factor up the
wings and into the goal line where players
like Harry showed the formula for success to

In all it was a great year of success getting

This season 2013 took my son and I on a
new adventure and challenge – to take on
the Under 12 East side which was handed
over to me by Andrew Fraser who coached
the boys last year: thanks Andrew.
With a few players leaving Andrew’s
side from last year, Tim James (ESJFC
Coordinator) decided to give this side a little
boost by introducing his son Max, Louis
Butler, Josh Le Grice and my son, Harrison,
which gave the team extra strength, skill and
power.
Our 1st match was against the Sharks
and we ate them up with a light batter
and our season was underway with great
pressure, spirit and strong defence and,
most importantly, great team play. This
continued for another three matches
against East Malvern, Brighton Beach and
Mordy Braeside, where Jack, Bill, Louis, Cam,
Harrison and Josh all contributed to these
games that could have gone either way.
As the season unfolded, we were up against
bigger and taller opposition. It put us under
the test and whether we were up to the next
stage of this competition. Meaning, after
playing a couple of these sides where the
game play was more man play and stacks
on the ball, it put a different perspective of
how this game can be played which I don’t
believe is good football.
Another test on this team was the growing
pains of legs and shins that sidelined some
players or stopped their strong running
game, not to mention some boys missing
due to school commitments which stretched
our list and some weeks with no bench.
Taking all this aside, the boys never gave up
and gave their all which does show their test
of character.
The second half of the season tested our
small skilful side and, at times, we had our
backs against the wall where in games we
were 3 – 4 goals down at half time. This put
fuel in the fire and fired up our boys. In most
games, they worked their way back into the
game to win the second half but not enough
on the scoreboard to win but enough for
them to keep the wind in the sails for their
next game.
One of the great attributes of this side was
when they were put into a different position
each week. They got on with the job and
put their mind to it. Each week they were
challenged and tested from the forward
line to the backline, midfield and some
weeks they may have even played in their
favourite position! Our season was never
over, knowing we still had a chance to make
the top 4.
ball and opposition players and supporting
one another which is why it was such a
rewarding year for me as a Coach. I believe
this will be a real positive next year with
their enthusiasm, team ship and, most of all,
having fun.
Talking of fun, that’s exactly what I had all
14 games. The team had great support from
Ron, our Trainer, who on some days was
busier than Jack in the ruck! Thank you to
Sue for all those oranges, watermelons and
snakes which helped keep the boys running.
Thanks, too, goes to Grant, Andrew and Ken
for their assistance at training and Ken for
awards each week.
Leaving the best to last, Hayden, who never
missed a beat, had all the duties covered
every week, helped out at training and
endless emails every week. I didn’t find a
team manager this year: it was more a friend
where nothing was too difficult – thanks
Hayden. I also think our boys not only found
great team spirit but made some great
friendships along the way.

2013 got off to a great start for the U12
Blues with 2 wins from our first 3 games
showing that we had the skills, attitude and
intensity to compete right across the ground.
We had some good height and marking
ability with Nick, Harry and Ash who all
proved they could kick long, straight and
find the big sticks with ease.
Dan started strongly with a terrific over
the shoulder goal in the first game which
set the benchmark for a terrific year from
him. Alex showed from game 1 that he had
only gotten faster and was prepared to run
harder than last year – a formidable thought.
Coupled with his willingness to attack the
ball and lead by example, Alex set a high
standard for his team mates to follow.
Per and Matt provided plenty of skill and
speed to our centre set ups and both showed
an uncanny ability to sneak into space up
forward and pinch goals often when they
counted most.
Ben showed from the outset he had lost
none of his in and under courage over the
off-season and, with more speed and runon ability this year, he proved a real asset
around the packs.
But things got a little tougher after
that early form with Bassy breaking his
arm after Round 1 (not while playing
32

football,thankfully) and Harry copping a
knee in the back in Round 4 (resulting in
2 nights in hospital for surveillance on his
neck/spine). All ended okay, thankfully, and
both returned from their lay-offs with best
on ground performances – including a 4 goal
bag for Bassy – courageous stuff!
We copped another injury set back when
Archie broke his foot (again, not football
related…..hmmm!) which was a huge loss
given the strength and hardness he had
provided, particularly down back. Thankfully,
Luke stepped up and used his own size and
strength with devastating impact – which
stood him in good stead when he spent time
up forward.
Still, we were left somewhat undermanned
for large parts of the season and relied
heavily on a number of Under 11 guys to
step in to fill our depleted ranks (thanks to
Angus, Darby, Dan, Hugh, Langa, Will, Lachie
and Jack who all chipped in at various times
over the year – awesome effort, guys).
Brendan and Mark played most of the year
at half back where their tackling, pressure
and speed with the ball could be put to best
use. Both improved significantly as the year
went on with Mark earning some on-ball
rotation for his efforts.
Fergus and Marcus joined the team a few
rounds into the season and both provided
instant input with some great running and
kicking skills.
Henry and Tom also provided plenty of run
and both were fierce competitors around the
loose ball. Along with Sam, a high pressure
tackling machine at back pocket, this group
epitomised our approach of never taking a
backward step, no matter how tall, fast or
strong your opponent.
Beau’s speed and ball getting ability was
terrific all year while Pat was a constant
threat in the forward pocket – both in the
marking contests and at ground level. Kegan
started the year fast and strong and finished
even stronger – his tackling and hardness
at the ball was outstanding and a great
example for his teammates.
Brodie and Max topped off their year of
hard work and constant running with goals
against the top two sides – just rewards for
week-in, week-out effort and commitment.
Thanks to Rick, Adam, James and the
Michaels for all their help over the season,
and of course to all the boys who played
with such great sportsmanship and spirit.
Well done, guys! You should all be proud of
your efforts and achievements.

We started the grading process in February
which went over an eight-week period and,
in order to make three teams at Under 13
level, we went with a small panel of 20
players. We had one practise game and
limited training sessions to prepare the boys
for the first game playing together.
The first game against St Kilda City was a
real eye opener for a lot of the boys that had
not played in the top division before and
at three quarter time we were down by 9
points. I told the boys if they wanted to be
successful at this level, they really needed
every player in the team to give everything
they had, every game they played and the
boys went out in that last quarter and
competed at every contest which produced
a great win and really set us up for a great
year.
We were committed to developing all the
boys on an individual level and, with this
in mind, we moved the boys through most
positions on the ground throughout the
season as we did not want to pigeon hole
boys into a set position at this early stage
in their careers. We managed to achieve
this and get through the season with low
numbers available on some game days and
only lost one game for the season against
Beaumaris.
We came up against Beaumaris in the first
final and all the stars aligned for us in this
game to give our best performance of the
year to produce a great win and send us into
a Grand Final. When you read this, the result
of the grand final will be known but at this
stage, I hope it is a successful final as the
boys are clearly the best team at this stage.
A big thank you to Alan Logan who did a
great job as trainer. Thanks, also, to Andy
Pryor who was at training most nights
helping out and all the parents who helped
at training. A special mention to Andrew
Reade for doing a great job with the stats,
and to Sharon Pryor for organising social
nights.
On a personal level, I have really enjoyed the
season coaching the team. I have coached
at different levels in different sports over
the last 11 years and the commitment and
attitude shown by this group of boys is right
up there with the best I have seen and I hope
you all continue this in any pursuit you do in
the future.
A big thank you to Amanda Stockley and
Brook King for doing the newsletters.
Finally, thank you to all the parents who
willingly helped on game day and made sure
that the boys attended training and turned
up to the games on time.

There are a number of people to thank. First
and foremost a big thank you to Russell
Stocker and Nigel Strong who combined
to do the Team Manager’s duties. It’s a lot
of work behind the scenes and it certainly
makes a difference when all the admin tasks
are taken care of so efficiently.
Thank you to Geoff Morley who was

and support all year and Steve Turner, the
runner - a rather thankless task at times
(sorry for that).

Under 13s was a year of change for many
players at East Sandringham. Club policy
dictates that players are graded at this
level and assigned to a team and division
consistent with their playing ability. As a
result, the Under 13 Division 3 side came
together on the eve of the season. New
coaches, new team mates and even some
new rules to become familiar with.
It didn’t take long: the boys bounced out of
the blocks in the annual Hocking Stuart Cup
to thump arch rival, East Brighton. It was
our one and only outing prior to Round 1
so confidence levels for the season ahead
were high. Our Round 1 opponent, Bentleigh,
soon put a dint in our confidence, flogging
us by more than 10 goals and proving that a
highly talented team will always beat a team
of highly talented players. That became the
challenge for our boys - to get to know one
another, find their best positions and to play
as a team.
The coaches decided to take a well-earned
rest after Round 1 and snuck off to the Gold
Coast for a few days of golf. The stand-in
coaches, Andre Van Der Linden and Mark
Bennett, took full advantage of the hard
work our regular coaching duo had put in
place. The boys turned around the huge
percentage deficit from Round 1’s loss in one
34
East Sandringham Junior Football Club
Yearbook 2013
game, pumping St. Kilda City and sending
them packing to Division 4. Suddenly the
season was back on track and we knew we
could only get better.
The following weeks saw us strengthen a
top 4 position. Wins against Beaumaris (6
points), Vampires (+60 points), St Peter’s (37
points), Ormond (+60 Points), and a narrow
loss to South Melbourne (11 points) had
us 3rd on the ladder at the half way mark,
facing Bentleigh again with something to
prove. With a couple of players missing, our
Zebs put in a tremendous effort against the
undefeated competition leaders, narrowly
losing by 3 points after 4 failed attempts at
a winning goal in the closing minutes. Whilst
disappointed, it proved how far we had come
since Round 1 and the coaches could not
have been prouder.
Unfortunately, two further successive losses
to Beaumaris (27 Points) and Dingley (46
Points) saw us slip out of the top 4 and
threaten our finals chances. With South
Melbourne gathering momentum by beating
Bentleigh and stealing our 4th position, we
knew we had to win our remaining games,
including South Melbourne, to secure a spot.
And so it was - wins against the Vampires
(+60 points), South Melbourne (11 Points),
in what proved to be the finals decider, St
Peter’s (34 points) and Ormond (45 points)
confirmed our place in the finals and a
chance at glory.
The first Semi Final saw us scheduled against
a much bigger and more fancied opponent
in Dingley. An 8.00am start, cold wet
conditions and the memory of a Round 10
flogging by Dingley didn’t give the Zebbies’
supporters a lot of hope for the day. But no
one told the boys this. It was finals footy. It
was our whole reason for playing the game
– the excitement, the anticipation, the fear
of elimination. The boys got their first taste
of finals footy for 2013 and, boy, did it taste
good! An upset win over Dingley (7 points)
sees us progress to the Preliminary Final
against Beaumaris. The mood is positive, the
confidence is high – a win this week and we
set ourselves for a chance to go one better
against Bentleigh in two weeks’ time.

As I sit here and reflect on the season,
it gives me great pride and joy what our
team has achieved in 2013.The season will
conclude this Sunday with us participating
in the Grand Final against the Caulfield Bears
who remain undefeated this season and are
a very formidable opponent.
Our team was put together as a combination
of boys from different Zebbies teams as well
as boys who were new to the club. We only
had one training session and one practise
game before the season began.
The first practise game against the Vampires
saw a group of boys and coaches thrown
together who did not really know each other.
We were comfortably beaten.
Our season went like this … we lost the first
4 games including the practise game by a
combined total of 215 points and then we
won 12 of the following 14 games, both
losses to Caulfield who we meet in the
Grand Final.
As coaches, Scott Grenda and I have had
the privilege of watching this group of boys
galvanize as a group and become a great
football team in a very short period of time.
They have all trained extremely hard and
come to game day “ready to play”. They have
been very supportive of each other and
have stuck to our 4 team principles which
consisted of
1. Respect the Umpires and Opponents;
2. Be Great team mates;
3. Love the Game;
Gorozidis for his help coaching throughout
the year.
Finally, I want to thank this team of boys
who have been an absolute pleasure to
coach all year and my wish is that they
continue to play this great game for as long
as they can.

like to thank our Assistant Coach, Scott

has been a great support to all
the boys throughout the year.
I would also like to thank Richard Burgess
who has been our runner all year and stuck
to his commitment even when his son was
unable to play.
Thanks to Angelo Plafedelis for being our
permanent boundary umpire who has done
it all year with a big smile on his face.

As they say in the classics, East Sandy Div 1
had “the season they had to have.”
After playing in finals for the last four years
and being extremely successful on the field,
the boys experienced a year where things
didn’t quite go right and we were challenged
at times by circumstances they had no
control of.
Over the years, we have enjoyed relatively
injury free seasons but this year our bench
looked like the Sandringham casualty.
Serious injuries to Chuck, Nic, Davo, Matty,
Loewe and the Falconer twins had a long
term effect on the structure of the team
and certainly tested our depth. However,
each week the injured boys showed great
character by turning up to training and
match days full of encouragement for their
teammates.
The positive point that comes out of an
injury riddled season is that other boys get
a chance to step up and play in roles they
haven’t done before and this was certainly
the case in our situation. Our middle tier
players all look a huge step forward and
performed admirably against, at times, a lot
taller and stronger opponents.
The progress the boys made was quite
apparent and, in fact, came to the fore in
our last game against the top side. With only
sixteen players our teamwork and cohesion
made the opposition work hard all day for a
narrow victory.
We were fortunate this year to have so many
good leaders and voices in the side. Nic,
Chuck, Nath and Loewe were great in their
captaincy roles but they also had a lot of
assistance from many of the boys.
On an individual note, I congratulate the
trophy winner and Chuck, Nic, Nath and Sam
for making the rep sides.
Off the field I would like to extend my
thanks to many individuals: Inglis, my team
manager, Stew, my co-coach, Crispy, Mick,
Doc and Dodge, for assisting on the bench
all year, Marty for the camera work, Hurds
for the oranges, Greg and Elliot for boundary
and Sutty for filling in on occasions and also
Jess, Carly, Jaz, Liam, Hugo, Dan and Oscar
for their help with the water.
Over the last two years, I have really enjoyed
my time as coach and look forward to
watching the boys’ progress over the next
few years as a spectator.

We commenced the season with the
intention of continuing the dramatic
improvement that we showed over the last
two seasons - from the “easy beats” of two
years ago to the “best team out of the four”
last season. We continued the theme of
playing boys in the three areas of the field defence, midfield and attack. However, most
boys settled into their preferred position
during the course of the year. Additionally,
we continually rotated players, given the
large playing group of 24.
Our taller players - Jake Giacomini, Callum
Dodd, Dylan Buchhorn and Matt Acheson
- were critical in our team balance. All four
performed sensationally and “controlled the
air” in most of the games, whether in the
ruck duels, in defence or up forward.
We had a very strong midfield, ably led by
our stronger ball gatherers - Sam Taylor,
Sasha Parsons, Cooper Watson and Hugo
Butter. This gave us first use of the ball in the
critical centre clearances and when the ball
was in dispute.
Our skillful, running players - Jackson
Warne, Ben Cochran, Jackson Collins, Jordan
Johnstone and Sam Grose - created plentiful
opportunities for our forwards when not
kicking the goals themselves.
We engaged a backline that was extremely
disciplined and consequently held our
opponents to one of the lowest aggregate
points against. Matt Nolan, Josh McIntyre,
Adam Beck and Mac Parsons controlled
this. Each of theses lads held themselves
accountable to the team and not only
restricted opposition goals but created so
many opportunities for our forwards and
midfield.
The influence of Xavier Pym, Tom Matthews
and Finn Armstrong around the ground
continuously provided us with first use of
the football. Their desire to win the ball and
prevent the opposition from attacking was
instrumental in our success throughout the
year.
Our more regular forwards, including
Jackson Mahan, Ben Taverniti, Lachie
Paynter and Darcy Neate, were successful
in rewarding our backline and midfielders
with their ability to gain possession and kick
goals.
The intensity and desire were capped off by
our skill and intelligent use of the football.
This rewarded the East Sandy boys with an
extremely successful year and after a three
year stint together, we were by far the most
improved team in the competition. This is
the ultimate compliment to a fantastic group
of young men that are highly respected on
the field and admired by their peers socially.
Accordingly, I am confident each and every
player will succeed in life as they have done
during the course of their early football
development.
Thank you to Chris Nolan, Darren and
Heather Taylor, Neil and Debbie McIntyre,
Peter Butler, Richard Watson, Amanda Porter,
Serena Dodd and the parents, family, friends
and supporters of the team.

The Under 15 2013 campaign started in
blistering heat in late February at Sandy
Secondary College.
Over the next six weeks, and with good
numbers in attendance, the boys were
looking forward to the start of the season.
After a couple of good practise match
wins, we entered into the first game full of
confidence.
Starting the year in Div 2, a collective goal of
the boys was to win promotion back into Div
1. After a resounding 25 goal win in the first
game and then three consecutive BIG wins,
this was achieved in spectacular fashion.
Our first game back in Div 1 was against
reigning premiers and Div 1 powerhouse,
East Brighton. After a five goal loss in which
we outscored the opposition in the last half,
the team truly and rightly believed we could
match it against the best teams.
One negative to our good early season form,
however, was the season ending injuries of
three of our players. Our initial squad of 25
was whittled back to 22 and with ensuing
injuries, illness and school commitments,
numbers became an issue for the remainder
of the year.

For the rest of the season we managed to
record some more strong victories including
a fantastic come from behind win to beat
Murrumbeena who have been premiers
for four of the last five years. In all of our
losses, bar a thumping from East Malvern,
the team was super competitive and it was
only momentary lapses and perhaps a lack
of physical size and strength that cost us in
the end.
We ended up just missing the finals but all of
the boys contributed magnificently, showing
maturity and resilience beyond their years.
Well done, boys.
I would like to thank our team manager,

In my opening address to the team before
our first game, I emphasised football is a
team game. Our aim for the year was to
respect each other and to earn the respect
of each other. Some fifteen weeks later, I
am proud to say, we achieved our objective.
We had limited success on the scoreboard
but we had many moments of success
throughout the season. And we had a hell of
a lot of fun along the way!
The boys elected their captains - the two
Michaels, Rotar and Poulos - and worthy
captains they were, leading by example
throughout the year.
Our stoic (and overworked) defenders,
Michael, Zac, Luke, Tom, Kyle and Josh,
repelled many attacks. Our rucks, Liam and
Jamie, usually beat their opponents. Our
free running on ballers, Michael, Sam, Llama,
Craig and Jaz provided many exhilarating
passages. Our switch hitters, Jack, Nath,
Benji, Mitch and Mitch, played both ends
of the ground as and when required. JJ
and Liam were regular targets up forward,
providing contests with any spillage ably
mopped up by Sean, Josh and Harry.
Our output was consistent and evenly
spread: 19 of our 23 players received votes;
18 of our 23 players kicked a goal … andwe
tried to get those other 5 a goal. In the last
game, one kicked two behinds including one
poster, another kicked a goal only for it to be
touched on the line and another, unselfishly,
hand balled to a team mate when 20 metres
out, straight in front!
We only won two games for the season but
it felt like more. We were often competitive
without winning. We rarely dropped our
heads. The boys were stirred up by Edwin
after our round three loss. He told the boys
to have a crack and make their parents
proud - that they did.
We improved, we enjoyed and we endured.
It was a character building season. We will
all be better individuals for it. We were
fortunate enough to win our last game and,
as they say, you’re only as good as your last
game.
as and when required. The camaraderie of
the boys and their families was evident at
our end of season break up: 18 of the 23
attended.
Well, East Sandringham Under 15 Div 3s that was the season it was. You boys were
fantastic. I stepped out of my comfort zone
but you made me comfortable. I will cherish
the memories. Thank you. You had a crack. You made your parents proud. You built and
consolidated friendships. You learnt a major
lesson in life - it’s not all about winning …
unless you win your last game!

What a season 2013 has delivered for our
beloved Under 16s.
We took over the coaching duties after
a hard-fought round 3 loss to Ormond
and from there, we were welcomed with
3 consecutive losses which totalled a lazy
385 points. Player numbers were down,
enthusiasm was lacking and we were
wondering what exactly we had just agreed
to.
Luckily, however, we had hit rock-bottom
and from there things only got better both on and off the field. With the boys
sporting some new nicknames such as Sam
‘Shticky’ Gall, Ari ‘Prince’ Ventouras and
‘Lethal’ Lewis Sutton, it was time to turn
the season around. The infamous ‘diceroll’ was introduced at training for certain
punishments which saw the lads eating
chillies, calling their parents to devote
their love, baking treats for the team and
attempting to mark the dreaded high ball.
It was only two weeks later that the boys
notched their first win of the season with a
75 point win over Ormond and from there,
we continued to improve. With the addition
of a few private school boys as well as some
recruiting by hard-working team managers,
it gave us the luxury as coaches to finally be
able to use an interchange bench.

To finish the season by winning 5 out of
the last 8 games, with a couple of tight
losses thrown in there, is a true testament
to how the team was able to turn the
season around. There is nothing much more
satisfying in football than knocking off
teams that had previously beaten us by well
over 100 points. It proved that we were a
team to be reckoned with when given the
resources.
It was a tough year in some aspects but a
very rewarding one nonetheless. It has been
great as coaches to be able to work with
the boys and see them improve each and
every week. It was really good to see the
boys enjoying their footy again and turning
around a season that could have quite
possibly been a disaster.
We would like to thank all the players,
parents and support staff for making this
season a great experience for us. It is almost
painful to imagine the damage we may
have been done if our full-strength side was
available all year.
That’s footy though we guess – you win
some, you lose some!

We started our pre-season in February with
a limited number of players but we were
determined to fulfill our pledge to have an
Under 17s team.
It was evident, as we neared the start of the
season, that we couldn’t field a team on our
own. We made contact with Highett who
were in a similar situation and the ZEBDOGS
were formed.
Once word had spread that the Zebdogs
were in town, we quickly gathered a list of
32 young men ready and willing to play
footy and to have a great finish to their
junior careers.
On and off the field, it didn’t take long for
the team to bond. The Zebdogs were very
competitive on the field, missing the finals
by just 0.5 per cent and, socially, they were
soon out partying together.
The inaugural Zebdogs’ Golf open was held
at Cheltenham with a winning score of 120
– for nine holes!
Leadership was a big factor in the season’s
success with the boys taking responsibility
for recovery at the beach, at training which
was always well attended and with specific
responsibilities on match day.
As a coach, all you can ask is that the team
puts its best foot forward every week and, in
this regard, the Zebdogs were magnificent.
To our young men of the Zebdogs: my
sincere thanks for your efforts.
I would like to acknowledge the support
of our willing parent group. Special thanks
must go to Mark Prosser and Geoff Prosser
who multi-skilled as assistant coaches,
interchange stewards, property stewards
and team managers. They should also be
congratulated for the roles they played in
bringing the two clubs together.
From Mark, Geoff and I: we are very proud
of the way these young men have improved
and conducted themselves on the field.
Congratulations on your junior football
careers and we look forward to seeing you
go from strength to strength into your
senior careers.
Always remember, enjoy the game and do
your best.
Tony Hoar - Coach
Thanks, also, to Andrew Pryor, Brett Bowey
and Paul Ryan for their role in combining the
Zebdogs.
To Marita Suhr and Mark Jackson, our
trainers, a big thank you from the team.
Chris Nolan and John Rae were regular
wearers of the Team Manager’s bib and were
great contributors.
Andy Bekierz and Rod Wheeler each
week would present photos and videos
respectively and have left an outstanding
record of the year.

The great team of the 15B Zebbies did a
fantastic job working together as a team.
As a strong friendship group, the girls
successfully stepped up to the challenges of
the season and were very dedicated to the
team through games and training and their
perseverance was always present.
The season was a mixture of wins, losses and
draws – however, never let the end result
ruin the fun and passion for the game that
they love. Each girl individually carried her
own part of the team and brought different
roles each week.

It is evident that the girls have improved
over the season in working together as a
team and their own skill level has risen over
the course of the year.
I would like to thank the girls for
participating happily in training despite the
cold weather. I had a fun year coaching the
Zebras and I know they will have greater
seasons ahead of them.
Well done girls and keep up the good
attitudes and commitment.

Although we have not had a lot of success
this year, the Under 15 girls pink team
has had a really enjoyable season playing
together!
The team is made up of Hannah, Holly, April,
Annie, Zoe, Maddy, Emma, Isy and Liv who
all come from a variety of different schools.
Despite this fact, the girls have worked very
hard to work together as a united team
over the course of the season. This has been
possible by the individual efforts made by
each of the team members.
Emma is the team’s double threat! She was
able to utilise her incredible height to both
attack and defend under the ring.
Although Maddy has no previous netball
experience, she was a valuable defence
player in the team!
Liv was an extremely hardworking attacker
and goaler who always did her best.
Annie switched her time between midcourt
and defence and could always be relied upon
to move the game forward.
April was invaluable in centre court, often
being shifted from one position to another
without any trouble.
Holly demonstrated that no previous netball
is necessary when playing netball. Her efforts
in the midcourt were extremely beneficial for
the team.
Hannah was an important goal defender
who always ensured she got the rebound
under the ring.
Isy was extremely determined and a
hardworking midcourt player. She always
gave 100 percent at both training and during
the game.
I had so much fun this year coaching the
girls and would just like to thank Kirsten
Wiley and Kate Gillan for their work as team
managers and their help at the games each
Saturday. The girls and I really appreciate
your effort!
Good luck next season!
Issy Gillan - Coach
Zoe, the team’s main gaoler, was always
in position and ready to take on her taller
opposition.

Netball Under 17
Back Row: Tess McLachlan (Coach), Sabrina Healy, Carly Murphy, Amy Kay, Annabelle Burns, Monique Murphy (Team Manager)
Front: Xanthe Ficarra, Georgia Alderuccio, Charlotte Murphy, Stephanie Crisp
After coming into the 17A division following
a stellar season in 2012, the girls were dealt
a tough fixture which saw them suffer
three close losses to the top competition.
However, as the season progressed and the
girls gained momentum, it became obvious
that this team was strong and eventually
succeeded in defeating the toughest teams.
Together these girls form an impressive side
and shine in each third. In defence is a duo
that would daunt and challenge the best of
attackers. With Amy’s clean defensive skills
and sportsmanship, and Sabrina’s tenacity
and hunger for the ball, our defence has the
versatility and talent to read play beyond
their years.
In our mid-court, Annabelle, Xanthe, Georgia
& Steph, all bring something different to the
court. In defensive wing, Annabelle has the
speed and agility to get a tip on the hardest
of passes, whilst Xanthe’s athleticism,
attitude and determination are what every
team wants in a centre player.
Then there’s Steph whose consistency and
reliability as a feeder into the goal circle
is a rarity, along with Georiga’s ability to
dominate in any centre-court position and
taunt her opponent for the ball.
In goals, Charlotte and Carly are a
combination that is an asset to this team.
Charlotte is a driving force who’s fortitude
to rebound for goals and switch to defensive
play is inspiring. Finally there’s Carly, whose
effortless shooting style and levelheadedness
is what her defenders continuously aim to
break but never succeed in.
Considering these girls don’t train, this
combination is dynamite! They manage
to play as a unit and take instruction and
advice when needed. Although it’s been
a turbulent season, it’s been an absolute
pleasure to watch the team grow throughout
the season.
As we inch closer to finals, I think the girls
will surprise themselves with their ability and
I’m excited to see the team rise to challenge.

Front: Tilly Gillan, Belle Healy, Matilda O’Sullivan
What another strong season by the Under 19
girls in 2013.
With a few wash outs this season and
again some very strong performances week
in week out, the girls are well placed for
another shot at the premiership.
This season we welcomed back Sarah
Hetherington after a serious knee injury
which had her out of the 2012 season. She
has combined beautifully with Eliane and
Simone to form a very strong and accurate
goal end.
Goals have been hard to come by for
opposition teams this year with Emily,
Matilda and Vanessa consistently turning
the ball over and pressuring teams in the
defensive third.
These girls continue to surprise me. With
VCE studies, part time jobs, other sports and
social lives, these girls continue to make
Saturday netball fun, rewarding and filled
with friendship.
These days we see too many young girls
drop out of sport and physical activity which
is sad. The Sandy girls are opposite to this.
They have grown as netballers but also as
beautiful young girls.
I would again like to thank all the parents
for their amazing support each Saturday and
especially to Helen Broadley for all of her
organizing and hard work behind the scenes.
Lauren Darvell - Coach
To make these two ends combine, our
excellent ball skills and speed by our centre
court players of Belle, Tilly, Simone and
Vanessa again has delivered.

Club Song
(sung to the Richmond Football Club tune)
Oh we’re from SANDRINGHAM
A fighting fury
We’re from SANDRINGHAM
In any weather you can see us with a grin
Risking head and shin
When we’re behind, well never mind,
We’ll fight and fight to win.
Oh we’re from SANDRINGHAM
We’ll never weaken till the final siren goes
We’re like the zebras of old,
We’re strong and we’re bold
Oh we’re from Sandy, Yellow and Black!
Oh we’re from SANDRINGHAM.
