Variety Night and Prom Preview! Speech! Dumb Laws! Coach Mr. Scott Powell Ready, Set, GOLF! by Lacey Ilene Harrison The Team Josh Roth Luke Logan Andrew Embry Jacob Bullington Shiv Patel Zane Martin Aaron Beckman Danny Harper James Johnson Gage Olsen Jake Hassett Granite Tait Jace Langholz Trey Newman Jacob Hokanson Brandon Cummins Grant Sodders Let’s get Ready to Rumble Spring is in the air and so is the news about the spring sports. Golf is one of those many sports. Mr. Scott Powell is the coach for the boys golf team this year. The team consists of 17 dedicated guys who are ready to golf. Coach Powell’s first goal this year was to increase the number of players able to participate, and he is glad to say they already accomplished that goal. The team started practice Monday, March 12. Coach Powell is looking forward to getting the boys out on the course and helping them practice on their swing. He also wants to work on putting and chipping because he says it can save any player a few shots during a round. Coach Powell says, “Last year we were able to beat 9 different teams throughout the year. Our goal will be to match or surpass that even though we graduated most of varsity golfers from last year.” The team is lucky enough to play at the Tournament Club of Iowa for one of their away meets with North Polk. They are excited for that. Their conference meet is at Cedar Pointe Golf Club in Boone. The team’s next home meet is on Monday, April 9. Home meets are at Woodland Hills Golf Course so make sure you make it out there sometime to support the team. Spring is here and the boys are ready to golf. Girls Just Wanna Play Golf Nicole Weisskopf is the only female golfer we have at Saydel right now; therefore, she enjoys golfing for Southeast Polk’s golf team. Her goals for this season are to concentrate more on her short game and also to qualify for state as a team. She started golfing with her parents when she was really young. Nicole said, “I would ride on the cart when we would go out and make up the score I would get.” Overall, she enjoys playing with other girls around the area and her teammates at Southeast Polk. Nicole ends with, “Golf is a really fun and mental sport.” What did you do over Spring Break? Chelsee Conkel “I slept a lot. I went to the mall with friends. Then I had some friends stay the night at my house.” Dylan Bruns “Over spring break I slept until 12pm then got up for track practice at 1pm almost everyday. I spent a couple nights in Johnston with some friends and hung out with a few other friends from school.” Lizzy Wayvon Jasi Adams “I sat around doing nothing, until the weekend, when I went to my grandma’s house and my friend came over and we hung out.” “Over spring break I went to a friend’s house and we went to her little sister’s school. Then I went to another friend’s house and hung out with her and Tylor.” Boys Track Running to State 2012 by Katie Coy The turnout for boys track this season is great. Forty-five boys have joined track this year ready to dedicate themselves to the team. To get ready for the season the boys track team started conditioning in early February. They are preparing for two upcoming indoor track meets in the coming weeks. It’s important for the track team to elect captains. The captains show leadership and they are role models for younger track members to look up to. “We have not elected captains yet,” says head Coach Chris Mund. “The team is planning on electing the captains soon though.” When asked about the upcoming season, junior Logan Sommers said, “I’m looking forward to the coed track meets.” The boys track team is working hard to achieve their goals for this track season. Girls Track Sprinting into a Promising Season by Katie Coy The girls track team is looking promising this season. Twenty-eight girls have signed up to participate for girls track. “We started practices in early February,” head Coach Craig Wederquist said. The team has already had one indoor track meet at Iowa State University. Saydel placed first in the 4 x 400 race in their heat at the track meet. When interviewing returning junior Karen Overman about the upcoming season she said, “[I am] working hard to get a good time in the 4 x 400 race to go to state.” The girl’s track team is training to compete in their upcoming track meets for 2012. by Tiffani Dings CJ Pearson Erika Christiansen Items: Clothes, books, and papers. The boys will be on the road for awhile, with seven out of their next eight matches being away meets. Their only home meet is April 26 against North Polk. Come on out to the match and cheer the boys on! Hunter White by Riley Hayes The girls tennis team has been practicing since early February. This year’s theme is masquerade. For those who don’t know what that is, it’s a party dance, or other festive gathering of people wearing masks. To prepare for the occasion, one may purchase masks from places like Hobby Lobby, Pier 1 Imports, Nobbies, or even places online. Since Mardi Gras just ended, a lot of places may still have masks. Each girl prefers a certain style of dress. From poofy, to straight, even from trumpet/mermaid. There are so many unique styles to choose from. If you’re still looking for a dress places like Glam, Prom Connection, Younkers, JC Penneys, Stacey’s Prom, Deb, Van Maur, and even Dillards will have a wide variety. For the guys that have no idea where to rent a tux, there are many places to choose from: Milroy’s, Skeffington’s Formalwear, and Men’s Wearhouse are some stores to consider. What should guys consider when choosing a tuxedo? White is the new black! Make sure to match your date’s dress; it’s a very important thing to remember. Also, the corsage should match her dress, too. A very good place to get the flowers would be Hy-Vee or Flowerama. Prom will be located at Holiday Inn. The address is 1050 6th Avenue, downtown Des Moines, 50314. It’s from 8:00-11:00 PM. After the dance, students have exactly an hour to get to the school for After Prom. After Prom is located here at the school from 12:004:00AM. We’ll have a lot to do at After Prom, so you will have fun! DUMB LAWS by Karlee Cox In Iowa a man with a moustache may never kiss a woman in public. In California it is a misdemeanor to shoot at any kind of game from a moving vehicle, unless the target is a whale. In Idaho you may not fish on a camel’s back. In Kansas the state game rule prohibits the use of mules to hunt ducks. In Texas it is illegal to milk another person’s cow. In North Dakota it is illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on. In Hawaii coins are not allowed to be placed in one’s ears. In Minnesota a person may not cross state lines with a duck atop his head. In Washington when two trains come to a crossing, neither shall go until the other has passed. In Oregon ice cream may not be eaten on Sundays. Oklahoma will not tolerate anyone taking a bite out of another’s hamburger. In Nevada everyone walking the streets is required to wear a mask. In Florida if an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, the parking fee has to be paid just as it would for a vehicle. What’s Your Favorite Part About Spring?
