Year Twelve Formal
The Year Twelve Formal saw the students of 2012
arrive in Chevrolets, stretched Hummers, Limousines,
Mack trucks and Goodna Emergency Service vehicles.
Nothing was going to keep the young men and
women (with their entourages of family and friends)
from enjoying the festivities at The Landing at Dockside.
With Kangaroo Point and the Story Bridge providing the
backdrop, the banks of the Brisbane River was a buzz of
activity with sharply dressed men, glamorous women,
the flashes of cameras and music to keep the pace
alive and well for the evening.
The evening was marked with a sense of celebration
and excitement, but also a moment for the cohort to
reflect on the year that has been. With QCS in their past
and Verification Folios tendered to the QSA, this was a
night that was well-deserved. It was a night that was
enjoyed by all.

year twelve valedictory dinner : success
Valedictory Dinner
The graduating Year Twelve class of 2012, celebrated their
school achievements on November 9, at the annual Year
Twelve Valedictory Dinner at the Metro International Hotel,
Ipswich.
In an evening where family and friends, teachers and peers
gathered to see awards won and songs sung. With Councillor
David Morrison in attendance, the spotlight was on the Year
Twelves to display the characteristics of a TSAC education:
teamwork, success and community.
A fond look back at their schooling days gone by, with photos
from College events, camps and baby photos gave students
and their parents the opportunity to reflect on how far they
had come and grown.
Heartfelt farewells and well-wishes were shared by Head of
College, Mr Steve Croft, College Captains, Jennifer Lo and
Jacob Thian and Year 12 Coordinator, Mr Ben Johnston.
Congratulations Year Twelve!

Year Twelve Graduation
On Friday November 16, our Year Twelve students were
farewelled at two emotional Chapel ceremonies. The first on
the Primary Campus, gave most students the opportunity to
reminisce about where they had first started with the College
and the opportunity for Primary Campus staff and students to
celebrate their schooling achievements. Students were
presented with a bookmark by Prep students and treated to a
performance by our Junior Choir. As they left the Primary
Campus, all students formed a guard of honour and clapped
them out as students winded their way through the courtyard.
On the Senior Campus students were farewelled in another
beautiful Chapel service by students from Year Seven to Eleven.
A performance by some of the Year Twelve music students
capped off the morning. Congratulations to all Year Twelve
students on their achievements and good luck for the future.

TSAC Sport Overview
The Springfield Anglican College sporting teams have excelled in a
variety of sports throughout the year. This year students have shown
great interest in representing the College in a variety of sports, which
has meant that TSAC sporting teams have significantly grown in number
and in strength. The College won three TAS Premierships and one CISSSA
Premiership. The Year Five Rugby and Softball teams were undefeated,
the Year Ten Boys Tennis team won back to back premierships, all four
TAS Touch teams reached the finals and the TSAC Equestrian team
achieved honours at State level. All team members have proudly
represented the College consistently, demonstrating true sportsmanship
and team work which has gained positive comments from opposition
and community members. The Sporting Academies have had a positive
impact on the success of the College teams with the JTAS and TAS
Athletics teams finishing in second and third place respectively.
Overall The Springfield Anglican College Sport Programme has had an
excellent year and continues to grow. There have been 87 teams that
have represented the College and we have had numerous students go
on to represent the College at Regional, State and at National level.
Centre of Sporting Excellence
Throughout the year the College has continued to identify and provide
support and guidance to those young students who are talented in a
single sport (or multiple sports) in order for them to reach their
potential. The range and number of opportunities for our talented
athletes to participate in sport beyond school has increased.
2012 has seen significant growth of the Tennis, Athletics and Swimming
Centres of Sporting Excellences. The number of students competing at
Regional, State and National level continues to increase in swimming
and athletics. The JTAS and TAS Athletics teams finished in second and
third place respectively and the College won three TAS Premierships, all
in tennis.
The College would like to thank Mrs Joanna Spyro (Goodna Little
Athletics), Mr Paul Sansby (Waterworx Aquatic Centre), Mr Glenn Moodie
(G M Tennis) and Mr Adem Poric (Total Football Academy) for their
support and expert coaching throughout the year.

Clan Carnival Overview
The first sports event of the calendar year was the Senior InterClan Swimming Carnival. This was a day for all to participate
and earn points for their Clan. There were some very competitive
races in the older age groups which made for a tight finish for
Age Champions. Clan spirit was exceptional at the Inter-Clan
Cross Country Carnival with Clan colours in full display and
plenty of cheering from all Clans. The year was completed with
the Inter-Clan Athletics Carnival held at Goodna Little Athletics
club, Goodna. Throughout the year the Senior students were
outstanding as role models to the younger students. Participation
increased and the Clans showed true sportsmanship and
excellent Clan spirit. The HPE & Sport Faculty would like to
congratulate all students for a most enjoyable year and thank
all parents who have supported the Clan carnivals.

TAS Athletics
JTAS Athletics Carnival
2012 has been the most successful year for the College’s
Athletics Team placing third at the TAS Red Division Athletics
Carnival. Seventy athletes represented TSAC on the day with
many fine individual performances and exceptional relay
results. With athletes training twice a week with TSAC Athletics
Coach Mrs Joanna Spyro’s expectations were high and the
team did not disappoint.
TSAC sent a 50 strong member team to the JTAS Athletics
Carnival on Friday September 14 at the Queensland Sport and
Athletics Centre.
The 13 Years Girls, the 15 Years Boys and the Open Girls all
finished in first place. Both Boys and Girls teams won their
respective Percentage trophies. Long standing records were
broken on the day by Larissa Chambers in the Open Girls
100m (12.23sec) and 200m (25.26sec) events and many
athletes achieved their personal best results. Congratulations
to all who competed on the day. TSAC will be the team to beat
in 2013.
Athletics Academy
This year the College launched the TSAC Athletics Academy,
forming a strong partnership with the Goodna Little Athletics
Club and Coach Mrs Joanna Spyro. Throughout 2012, Mrs Spyro
and past student Ms Aransia Peters have inspired athletes to
go beyond their comfort zone. Athletes have responded by
working hard to improve their technique, fitness and overall
performance in their chosen events.
82 : the springfield anglican college 2012
In one of the best performances by any team in the College’s
history, the team finished in second place overall in the Red
Division, just 5.75 points behind winners Redeemer Lutheran
College. The Girls finished second overall, as did three of the
age groups, the 9 Years, 10 Years and 12/13 Years. This was the
best result by TSAC at any JTAS Carnival in its history.
There were numerous standout performers on the day. These
included Dakota Farrell-Thomas, Sam Lonsdale, Kalani Thomas,
Tayla Behr, Eryn Hughes, Paris Koutsis, Kalib Monaei, Larana
Thomas and Hamish Boyd. However, all students who
represented the school should be congratulated for the result
that was achieved.
Thank you to Mr James Patmore, Mrs Sherryl Prins and Mrs Kerrie
Jacob for assisting at the carnival, and to Mrs Joanna Spyro for
coaching the team throughout the year.

JTAS Basketball
TAS Boys Basketball
Basketball played a big role in JTAS sport in 2012, with the
College fielding five teams, as well as two teams at the Year
Four Carnival.
A Year Eight, Nine, Ten and Open A teams entered the 2012
TAS draw. Under the guidance of Mr Holmes, the Year Eight
Boys continued to make excellent progress. Reaching the
Grand final, the team lost to a very strong Faith Lutheran team.
The most successful team by far was the Year Five/Six boys’
team, who won five games, drew one and lost one. The team
achieved big wins over Ormiston College (36-11), St Paul’s
School (29-6), and John Paul College (22-19).
The Year Six girls fought hard all season, and always played
with fantastic spirit. The team’s highlight of the season was an
18 – 15 win over All Hallows.
The Year Six/Seven boys always fought hard in every game,
despite often coming against much stronger teams. Their
22-20 win over St Paul’s Red was the highlight of the season.
The Year Seven Girls’ team also had a successful season,
winning four of their seven games, including Faith Lutheran
College, and Canterbury College (18-16).
The Year Seven boys were unlucky to only win the one game
during the season, a 38-13 win over St Paul’s Red. They had a
number of very close games, including a one point loss to St
John’s Anglican College.
Thank you to Mr James Patmore, Ms Judy Jackson, Mrs Megan
Ellis, Ms Adrienne Jensen and Mrs Sandra Hill for helping coach
and manage the teams during the season. A number of Year
Twelve students also helped coach during the term.
The two Year Four teams both played four matches at the Year
Four Basketball Carnival at Canterbury College. Both teams
were mostly made up of girls and came up against teams
mainly full of boys. The TSAC ‘A’ team won two and drew one
of their four games. Thank you to Mr James Patmore and Mrs
Southerwood for coaching the teams, and to Mrs Danielle
Lennon for managing them at the carnival.
84 : the springfield anglican college 2012
Mr Anthony Bishop coached the Year Nine and Year Ten teams
and had a very good season and although not winning their
games, the progress made throughout the season was
incredible.
There were high hopes for the Open A team under the
guidance of their new coach, Mr Maynard Erece. The team
quickly realised that they had to be adaptable in the Open A
division to succeed. Against a very strong St John’s Anglican
College team who were 14 points ahead in the first half, the
team came back winning 33 – 31.

The Year Eight Girls team consisted of a group of dedicated
students. Minimal losses were experienced as the team
demonstrated courage, persistence and dedication to every
game.
The Year Nine team had a challenging season, coming up
against strong competition. The team was made up of only five
regular players with a combination of students from Year Eight
and Nine; and made good progress throughout the season.
The Year Ten Girls team, under the guidance of Mr Holmes had
an enjoyable and successful season in a very difficult
competition. The girls trained hard to improve their skills and
continued to make good progress.
The Open Girls team found themselves facing many older
opponents. The girls trained well, improving their own skills,
fitness and ability, gaining confidence as shooters for the basket
and able to perform layups with speed. Over the season this
dedication led the team to become more competitive on the
court.

Amy Bentley, Shantay Morris and Shilah Morris were selected to
represent Queensland at the Australian Interschool Equestrian
Championships at Toowoomba in October. All three girls
performed outstandingly, with Shantay finishing fourth in the
Showman event and Shilah finishing sixth in the Interschool
Challenge. Amy finished twelfth in the Interschool Challenge.
Queensland was ultimately crowned the champion state, so all
three girls were members of the championship winning team.
Congratulations to all members who represented the team
through the season. The results achieved are a huge reward to
all the hard work that they have put in. A massive thank you to
the coaches and volunteers who have helped out the team,
especially Mrs Karen Morris and Mrs Lauren Boyd, who have

JTAS Cricket
TSAC had two JTAS Cricket teams in 2012, a Year Five/Six and
Year Six/Seven team. The season was one of development and
learning the key skills and techniques of cricket, with all players
improving as the season went on.
Both teams won one match during the season. The Year
Six/Seven team were very unlucky not to win their last two
matches and finish the season with three wins.
A big thank you to Mr Martin Brownlow, Mr James Patmore,
Mrs Petrice Pascoe, Mrs Jane Pratt, Mr Paul Woolford and
Mr Andrew Walker for their assistance with coaching and
managing the teams during the season.
The College also competed in the Year Four Kanga Cricket
Carnival at St Paul’s School on Saturday March 17. The team
had a thoroughly enjoyable day, with the skills learnt at the
carnival being of great benefit for when students step up into
JTAS teams in 2013.
TAS Boys Cricket
The Year Eight Cricket team started the season with a
determined attitude to improving their batting, bowling and
fielding skills; and trained hard two afternoons a week with
their coaches. The boys supported by their parents travelled as
far as Warwick, Bald Hills, Forest Lake and our local cricket
ground at Greenbank. Congratulations to the Year Eight Cricket
team on an enjoyable season.
Although there were no wins from our Open A Boys Cricket
team this year, the boys are to be commended for their efforts,
perseverance and effort. The College would like to thank
Reverend Chris Boyce for his enthusiasm and positive attitude
towards managing the team.

TSAC sent an 80 strong team to the JTAS Cross Country Carnival
on Friday May 25 at St Paul’s School. The team produced a
fantastic performance, finishing third overall in the Red Division,
the school’s best ever result. The girls also finished second
overall in the Red Division. This is a tremendous result and is a
huge credit to the efforts of the students and the coaches in
the lead up to the carnival.
Three students - Chloe Bradley, Jenna Behr and Tayla Behr won their respective races, whilst Dakota Farrell-Thomas,
Oliver Kefford and Grace Caley all recorded top three finishes
in their age group. Eight other students finished in the top 10.
A big thank you to Mr James Patmore, Mrs Sheryl Prins,

undefeated for the entire season and most games were won with significant goal differences including an 18-0 game. In the
finals the team faced Westside Christian College and by the end of the first half was down 2-0. Keeping true to the TSAC spirit,
the team came back to win 4-3 in a thrilling last minute victory. The boys were extremely proud of each other and their coach
Mr Thomas McPherson.
The Year Nine Boys Futsal team narrowly missed qualifying for the CISSSA Futsal finals series in spite of remaining undefeated. This
was a pleasing season with a couple of draws salvaged and notable victories over Woodcrest and Scots PG College.
The TSAC Open Boys Futsal team competed at the highest level in the Open Division. Despite not always getting the desired

Captain’s Report – Robyn Prins
This year’s hockey season was packed with fun, hard work,
glory and defeat. Our schedule of games were against some of
the top hockey schools. Throughout the season the
enthusiasm and dedication of the players grew stronger and,
although we often had to leave as the defeated team, we were
able to hold out heads high. The season ended on a high note
by winning our last game, proving that all our hard work and
commitment came to fruition.
What an amazing year we had. Our players ranged from
Year Seven to Year Twelve and each one gave their best
every time we walked onto the field. It has been wonderful
to see the players develop and improve over the year. It
has been both a pleasure and honour to be their Captain
for the 2012 season. I am sad to leave such a motivated and
enthusiastic group of girls, but at the same time know that
next year will be an even greater season for you. Best of
luck, work hard but most importantly enjoy the game of
hockey.
We will miss our Year Twelve players, Lorraine Mesika, Patrina
David, Emily King and Robyn Prins, but look forward to all the
new players who will join us in 2013.
A special word of thanks is extended to the Open A Captain
Robyn Prins, whose leadership, inspiration and encouragement
shown to all team players was exemplary.
Lastly, I would like to thank our dedicated coaches,
Mr Andrew Pratt, Mrs Jane Pratt and Mrs Sheryl Prins. TSAC
are lucky to have such passionate and dedicated coaches.

All three JTAS teams enjoyed success throughout the season.
Some of the highlights included all three teams defeating
St John’s Anglican College on the same day, and the Year Six
team recording an impressive 22 – 1 win over St Paul’s School.
The Year Six and Seven team’s both won two of their five games,
with the Year Five team winning one of their four games.
A big thank you to Mrs Grier Elliot, Ms Karen Garton and
Miss Fleur Toussaint for coaching the teams during the season.
The two Year Four teams that played in the Netta Netball
Carnival at St John’s Anglican College had an extremely
successful day. Both teams played three matches each and
both went through undefeated. This included big wins over
two of the stronger TAS schools in St Paul’s School and

reckoned with in the future.
Congratulations to the girls in the Year Nine team for their

JTAS Rugby Union
Rugby Union continued to improve in leaps and bounds on
the Primary Campus in 2012, which was highlighted by the
great success enjoyed by the JTAS teams.
TSAC had two JTAS teams in 2012, a Year Five team and a Year
Six/Seven team. The Year Five team, under the expert coaching
of Mr Martin Brownlow and Mr Warren Newble, won all five
games to complete an undefeated season. This included wins
over St Paul’s School, St Peter’s Lutheran College and West
Moreton Anglican College. This was a fantastic achievement
and is incredibly exciting moving forward.
The Year Six/Seven team played in the Year Seven competition
and were coached by Mr James Patmore and Mr Paul Woolford.
Despite being made up mainly of Year Six students, the team
didn’t take a backward step during the season, winning two of
their five games. The team’s highlight was a 40 – 0 win over
Ormiston Red.
TSAC also entered four teams in the Ipswich Rangers 7s
Tournament in Term Three. The Under 10A team produced an
outstanding performance at the tournament to make the
finals, however, were narrowly beaten.
Congratulations to everyone who was involved in Primary
TSAC Rugby in 2012.
TAS Rugby Union
Moving from the hallowed grounds of the Primary Campus, the
Year Eight Rugby Union players took to their new training grounds
with the same vigour as they did the year before. The transition
from JTAS to TAS was an education for the young men as they
battled teams that had grown in stature and skill since the
previous season. The highlight of the season occurred in the
final game of the season, where they convincingly defeated
the eventual TAS Premiership winners; Faith Lutheran College.
Recording wins along the way, the young men have placed
themselves in good stead for the coming season and all are
enthused with the prospect of playing in 2013.

TAS Boys Soccer
This year saw a strong, confident and committed group of
boys representing the Year Eight Soccer team. Unfortunately
the promise of the first few games did not continue and we
ended fourth on the ladder. The real highlight of the season
was the last game against Scots PG College at Warwick.
In many ways this has been something of a transitional season
for the Year Nine and Ten boys. Deprived of leading players
through injury and a lack of games as a consequence of other
schools being unable to fulfil fixtures, it was a season of
frustration punctuated by some bright spots in the shape of
emerging talent and stand-out performances. The new talent
was supported by enthusiasm and ability from the rest of the
squad.
Soccer
Soccer is one of the biggest growing sports on the TSAC
Primary Campus, with the number of students playing from
Prep to Year Six extremely encouraging.
2012 saw TSAC field one team in the JTAS competition and
one in the Year Four Carnival. Both teams enjoyed some
success throughout the year and fought very hard against
some very strong opposition.
The JTAS Team this year was made up of a mix of boys and
girls and competed valiantly against teams who were
predominately made up of boys. Whilst only winning one
game, the team produced a number of great performances
throughout the season, scoring at least three goals in five of
the team’s matches for the season.
A big thank you to Mr Andrew Holmes and Mrs Tracey Palmer
for coaching and managing the team throughout the season.
The Year Four team trained hard all term under the guidance
of Mrs Michele Munn and Mrs Jane Pratt in the lead up to the
Year Four Carnival at Redeemer Lutheran College. The team
played three games at the carnival, finishing with a win, a loss
and a draw.

In 2012 the Open Team took the big step up to playing in the

from the games into next season. Thanks to all the players for
their hard work in training and on match days and thanks to all
the parents for getting there and offering great support.

two losses and a draw. A big thank you to Mrs Kate Frewin for
coaching the team during the season.
The Year Seven team had a number of very close matches
throughout the season and certainly improved as the season
went on. Thank you to Ms Joanne Gillespie and Mr James
Patmore for coaching the team during the season.
A Year Four T-Ball team also represented the school at the Year
Four T-Ball Carnival at St Paul’s School on Saturday March 17. The
students in the team conducted themselves with great esteem
throughout the training sessions and the carnival, and should
be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mr James Patmore
and Miss Laura Pinnell for coaching the team, and to Mrs Melody
Lawler for helping manage the team at the carnival.

Tennis Academy
TAS Boys Tennis
TAS Girls Tennis
2012 has been another exciting year for Tennis at the College.
The second year of the Tennis Academy has seen a pronounced
improvement in the skills of our players. Testimony to this is
the high percentage of Academy players representing the
College in the TAS Tennis teams and the College’s success in
claiming three TAS Tennis Premierships, among them the first
Open - A Premiership.
Five Teams, two Premierships and second overall in Boy’s Tennis
in 2012 proved to be good return for a dedicated group of
players. The Year Eight and Year Ten teams both went through
the regular season undefeated and won their respective Grand
Finals. The Year Eight team comfortably took out their final and
are developing as a strong group of players for the future. The
Year Ten team took on their old foe, St John’s and made an
extraordinary comeback to tie 3 sets all – winning the
premiership due to finishing top of the table. The Open A and
B teams had some good wins and some loses. For the Year
Nine’s it was a massive learning year with many boys having
never played tennis before experiencing fixtures for the first
time. Thanks to all members of the tennis teams for their
dedication to training and sportsmanship on the court in
2012.
Once the Year Eight girls fell into a routine of matches and
training and started to embrace the sport, they made progress
and won some games. Tess Hedges and Sabrina Stinchcombe
became an effective doubles pairing and were supported by
Emily Milton-Brown and Shivani Rana.
Under the watchful eye of one of Australia’s top talent
development coaches, Mr Glenn Moodie, the Tennis
Academy’s three tier programme continues to identify players
ready to progress to Level Two. After starting out with only one
player training at the elite Level Three tier when the Academy
began, the College now has four players at this level.
The Tennis program on the Primary Campus has already
identifying students who will be well equipped to enter Level
One of the Tennis Academy programme when they move to
the Senior Campus.
JTAS Tennis
Term Four provided the opportunity for the Primary tennis
players to show their talents in the JTAS Tennis competition.
TSAC started the season with three teams, with coach Glenn
Moodie.
The TSAC ‘A’ and TSAC ‘B’ teams played in the Blue Division,
playing against schools such as Ormiston College, John Paul
College and Canterbury College.
The TSAC ‘C’ team played in the Red Division, however injuries
and fixture issues meant the team was only able to play one
fixture.
Thank you to Mr Glenn Moodie for coaching, and to Mr Phil
Kefford and Miss Helena Massey for managing the teams.

In the Year Nine Girls team, Kimberley White is to be commended
for her participation in both the team that represented her
own year group, and also, for her willingness to step up and
play in teams according to their need. Support from Marie
Boulanger, Melodie Prins and Claudia Marasea was invaluable
and all girls, if they can continue to play, will move up and form
the backbone of the new Year Ten team. The arrival of Lucy
Williams at the College has been a real boost.
The Open B Girls team was perhaps the best in terms of training.
Hannah Li, Kim White, Lily-Ann Veness and Robyn Prins were
diligent in the extreme, as they never missed a session and are
to be commended for their enjoyment, progress and participation.
Victories were few and far between, but they demonstrated the
values and attitudes which we seek to encourage amongst all
students.
This team will be forever remembered as the team that delivered
TSAC their first Open A Premiership trophy. A remarkable Grand
Final victory over Redeemer Lutheran College where scores
were tied, and the previous match score, resulted in a TSAC
victory. Led by Tennis Academy ‘graduates’ and seasoned players,
Jemima Shipman and Kaitlyn Tierney, were consistent performers
who were able to raise their games to beat opponents. Chelsea
Butler, was a pivotal member of the team – not losing a singles
or doubles game across the entire season. Ably supported by
Jennifer Lo, this pair stormed to victory in the critical final doubles
game. A truly momentous season, these four girls, supported
by Kimberley White in a couple of fixtures, have put TSAC sport,
and tennis in particular, on the TAS radar at the highest level.
Congratulations to all involved in a most memorable season.

JTAS Touch Football
Three teams participated in the JTAS Touch Football Competition
on Saturday October 27 and Saturday November 3 at Ormiston
College.
The teams achieved great success across the two weekends,
thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to play a minimum of
five games in a quality competition.
The Year Five/Six team, coached by Mr Brett Thomas, finished
undefeated with four wins and a draw from five games. Wins
included West Moreton Anglican College (9-0) and St Peter’s
Lutheran College (4-1).
The Year Six/Seven team, coached by Mr Warren Newble, won
four of their six games. The team’s best win was against
Redeemer Lutheran College (4-0).
The Year Seven team were coached by Mrs Leanne Zendler
and won two of their five games. The team’s best win was
against Cannon Hill Anglican College (3-1).
Thank you to all coaches for their hard work during the season.

TAS Girls Touch Football
The sport of Touch Football is continually growing at the College.
Four teams (Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls, and Senior
Boys) competed in the ‘Brisbane Christian Schools Touch
Carnival’ in Term Two with all teams performing well and
competitively. The Junior Girls qualified for the Semi Final and
unfortunately lost by one touchdown.
This is the third year that Touch Football has been included in
the TAS Sporting programme and is also the year that all TSAC
Touch teams made the TAS Touch finals. The Year Eight Girls,
Year Nine Girls and Open A all finished second on the ladder
and the Open B team finished first – Premiers. All teams played
well in the finals but unfortunately they were unable to secure
a win. The quality of coaching and the enthusiasm of each
coach was outstanding. Thank you to Mr Ben Johnston,
Mr Lachlan Gaedtke, Mr Trevor Dyer and Mrs Leanne Zendler
for the time and effort in coaching.
A special mention needs to go to the Open A Touch team. This
group of talented, and committed young women were led by
Annalise Fogg. Determined at training, the simple, strategic
planning for each game and player positioning saw the girls
make more astute and educated plays each Saturday morning.

TAS Boys Volleyball
Fear, apprehension and restless energy were in abundance
during the first training session for the six boys that represented
the Year Eight Boys Volleyball team this year. However, the boys
also displayed a focus on developing teamwork and improving
individual skill levels right from the outset. It was fortunate that
the boys possessed these latter attributes as their resolve would
increasingly be tested during the season. It was their
determination to consistently improve, collectively and singularly,
that saw the boys just miss out on a finals spot this year.
The Year Nine Boys Volleyball team had a turbulent year this
season with the playing roster changing most weeks due to
injury and availability. This inconsistency reflected in the boys’
ability to generate fluidity in their teamwork. To their credit the
latter stages of the season indicated that next year looks
promising with Brendan Fogg and Ben Wilcox leading by
example. Undoubtedly, the boys will learn from this season, and
armed with these experiences approach next season with the
focus and hunger to make a serious charge at the championship.
This year saw the emergence of a small, but strong and
dedicated Year Ten Boys Volleyball team. They started the year off
with few wins but their determination and hard work could not
be beaten. As the team honed their skills their confidence
increased and the wins followed. By the end of the season they
were a force to be reckoned with and had a number of surprise
wins against some very strong teams. Next year will prove to be a
great competition as these boys grow as players and as a team.
The Open B Volleyball squad produced nail biting excitement for
those watching this season. Although they remained winless,
they were competitive in every game taking four big-school
teams to five sets and losing by only a few points. These boys
trained and fought hard all season, and I’m sure that once they
grab that first win, a string of wins will follow.
The Open A team was made up of students from Year Twelve,
Year Eleven, and one Year Ten student and took the standards
of volleyball at the College to new heights. A steep learning
curve, and high expectations set upon them, they gathered
112 : the springfield anglican college 2012
momentum and became highly competitive throughout the
season. The losses experienced were hard fought with only
two to three points separating teams. This team created a new
level of excitement towards the sport throughout the
community with parents, students and teachers eager to
watch them play each week. A team ethos of ‘listen, learn, win’
was evident in their greatest achievement - defeating one of
the eventual finalists on their own court. Congratulations on
the success this year.
TAS Girls Volleyball
The Year Eight Girls team performed exceptionally well this year
remaining undefeated throughout the rounds section of the
season. Led strongly by the serving of Madison Finch and Mary
McFerran the girls each contributed to the success of the team
this year. Unfortunately the girls lost in the final this year,
however, the experience gained from playing in big games
should make them hungrier to go one better next year.
The Year Nine Girls team performed extremely well during the
first few games of the season, demonstrating a vast array of skills,
commitment and determination that had them leading the
competition after two rounds. As the season progressed, the girl’s
ability to never be outplayed ensured that many of the points
and ensuing games were closely fought. Whilst they did not
qualify for the finals, they have shown themselves that in coming
seasons they will be premier contenders.
Following their premiership success as Year Nine’s in 2011, hopes
were high for the Year Ten Girls team to go back to back in 2012.
Despite a couple of tough matches throughout the season where
the girls came back from a set down to beat Rivermount College
on two occasions, the team finished undefeated through the
regular season. Unfortunately the team was unable to produce
its best in the final and went down to Rivermount College by
two sets to one. Congratulations to the team who made the
Grand Final in each of the three years they have played.
After a 2011 season that did not yield a win, 2012 was a massive
turn around for the Open B Girls team. Requiring a win in their
last game against Scots PG College to secure a Grand Final spot,
the team came agonisingly close with a hard fought 3-2 loss. A
great season which saw some new players to the sport, and
considerable improvement made by all. The team finished third
and should be proud of their efforts this season.
The Open A Girls team consisted of players who had a
willingness to learn new techniques, strategies, plays, and
positions. The girls improved throughout the season and became
a more organised group, having some success against other
Colleges. They are encouraged to maintain this positive attitude
towards the game as a higher standard of play will be the focus
in 2013.
