WHO ARE
THE UNIVERSITY LIONS?
The University Lions Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit
organization that is wholly supported by the University
Lions Club. The club, chartered in 1924, is one of the
largest and oldest service organizations in the Pacific
Northwest. It is comprised of 71 members who are active
and retired from a variety of professions and primarily live
or work in the University District and the greater Seattle
area. For the past 86 years, the University Lions has
consistently represented the Lions International creed, “We
Serve”.
If you are interested in learning more about the University
Lions Club or becoming a member, please contact any of
the Lions here tonight. You are invited to attend one of
our weekly Wednesday meetings at Aljoya-Thorton Place
(450 NE 100th, Seattle; three blocks south of the Northgate
Shopping Center) from 12 noon to 1:30 pm.
Dear Lions and Guests,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 39th Annual
Auction of the University Lions Club: “A Starry Starry Night for
Hearing and Sight”. Many of you are veterans of our auction as
both donors and bidders. We thank you for your generosity! To
those of you who are newcomers, Welcome!! As we move into
our 86th year, the University Lions Club offers support to many
community programs and continues helping those with vision and
hearing deficits. We are most grateful for your generosity.
This auction will directly support the work of organizations such
as: Lions Early Assessment Program (LEAP: a program for
screening newborn infants for hearing deficiencies), University
Lions Camano Island Youth Camp (which offers free camping
facilities to over 500 youth every year), the Wallingford Boys
and Girls Club and Washington Poison Control Center. The
auction also benefits several other community groups.
This year’s Fund-an-Item donations will support the ParentInfant program at Listen and Talk, an organization that supports
spoken language development in children with hearing loss. The
University of Washington Medical Center Eye Institute will
apply its Fund-an-Items proceeds towards its research efforts to
treat corneal eye disease. Your generous donations this evening
will provide care for many in your local community.
In these difficult economic times, your support of events such as
ours tonight means even more. Thank You! We hope that you
enjoy the celebration. Have a wonderful evening!
Sincerely,
Roger Wright, President
University Lions Club
FUND AN ITEM 2010 - HEARING AND SIGHT
Every year, guests may contribute direct monetary support
to important Lions projects via the Fund-an-Item portion of
our program. Proceeds from the 2010 Fund-an-Item will be
shared equally between two outstanding organizations:
Listen and Talk, and the UW Medicine Eye Institute.
Listen and Talk is an early intervention program that
teaches children who are deaf or hard of hearing to
communicate and learn through spoken language. The
impact of such teaching is life changing. A few graduates
of the program share their experiences in their own words…
Meet Charlie (13 years old):
“When I was about one month old, I caught meningitis.
That illness diminished all of my chances of hearing like
everyone else. I wear hearing aids and my loss is
considered severe-profound. When I was about a year old,
I starting going to Listen and Talk. Sometimes my mom let
me go in my pajamas. I continued there until I was about
10 years old. Everything they taught me gave me the
knowledge to succeed in a regular school.
I love to read and write. Sometimes the stories I write are
so scary, that they call me the “Stephen King” of 7th
grade. Without the help of Listen and Talk, I wouldn’t be
able to read as much or be as good of a writer; I am quite
sure of this. My mom wants you to know I am on the
highest Honor Roll (3.8. GPA.)
FUND AN ITEM 2010- HEARING AND SIGHT
Meet Katherine (14 years old):
I lost my hearing when I was 9 months old. The doctors
told my parents that they would need to learn a new way
to communicate with me. Instead, my mom and dad
decided that I would learn to talk and experience life just
as my hearing brothers were.
I am now in the eighth grade at Our Lady of Fatima School.
I am like all the other girls in my class. I have my own cell
phone and a My Space page. I babysit children in my
neighborhood. Last year I placed first in my school’s
speech competition. I attend classes every day at Pacific
Northwest Ballet. I have performed in six Nutcrackers!
Just the other day, my ballet teacher asked me if I could
hear the music. I can definitely hear the music!
I am so glad that my parents found Listen and Talk.
Because of them, I was able to attend the same schools as
my brothers. Next fall, I hope to continue my family’s
tradition of attending Seattle Preparatory School.
Listen and Talk’s share of this year’s Fund-An-Item
contributions will support its Parent-Infant program.
Infants with hearing loss enrolled in this program are more
likely to enter a mainstream school by kindergarten and are
better prepared to enjoy a full life in a hearing world.
FUND AN ITEM 2010 – HEARING AND SIGHT
UW Medicine Eye Institute is one of the region’s premiere
eye care and vision research centers and is dedicated to
protecting and improving vision. They care for people with
all forms of eye disease and conduct research to develop
new treatments for blinding eye conditions. The impact of
their work is significant as shown in these personal stories:
Ky Mangold is an indomitable, energetic 6-year-old from
Ephrata, WA who loves to play with trains. Ky was born
with congenital glaucoma, a rare disease that can cause
many problems with the eyes including blindness. In 2009,
Ky was having difficulties in his kindergarten class
because, in addition to not seeing well, his eyes were
extremely sensitive to light. He was having a lot of pain,
including migraines. Earlier this year, Ky came to the UW
Medicine Eye Institute to see Dr. Tueng Shen, a member of
the University Lions Club, and the Lions Associate
Professor of Ophthalmology. As Dr. Shen explains, “Our
goal was to help Ky function as a normal kid.”
After a thorough exam, Shen performed a special sutureless corneal endothelial transplant surgery to restore the
transparency of Ky’s clouded cornea, which is the window
of the eye. The procedure was successful and today Ky is
back in school and learning to read in a normal classroom.
“We notice a real difference,” says Rannie Mangold, his
mother. “Everything just seems easier for him now”.
FUND AN ITEM 2010 - HEARING AND SIGHT
Peggy Adams is a retired postal worker from Port Orchard,
WA who loves to organize gatherings for her large family.
In the past ten years, Peggy has had three cornea
transplants. In 2004, her last corneal transplant began to
develop opacified calcium deposits and rejection which
clouded her vision. She went to see Dr. Shen. After a
consultation, Peggy received one of the first artificial
corneas (K-PROs) in the region. Today, Peggy sees much
better and does not have to fear that her cornea will cloud
over again. “I’m a success story,” she says. Since then, Dr.
Shen has provided more than 50 such implants to patients
in the Pacific Northwest.
Dr. Shen is a gifted surgeon who performs cutting-edge
procedures like Peggy’s K-PRO implant and Ky’s sutureless
corneal endothelial transplant to help her patients see
better. She is also a scientist who conducts research to
support advancements in eye care around the world. Your
support will help Dr. Shen continue this important work.
With generosity and compassion, you can
make a real difference.
Thank you for your contributions to
Fund-An-Item!
SALLY’S WINE TOSS
During the Silent Auction, between 5:00 PM and 6:45 PM,
you will have three chances to “Ring” a bottle of fine wine!
There are four categories of wine to be won in this fun
event, ranging from bottles valued at less than $10, to
bottles worth much, much more!! Who knows? Maybe YOU
will be the one to walk away with the Big Magnum!
To participate, simply provide your auction bid number to
our wine toss master. A $10 charge will be assessed to your
auction account and you’ll be given three rings to toss.
The color of the bottle you ring determines which wines
you can choose from to take home as your prize.
Categories of wine are: Yellow (wines valued at under $11),
green (wines valued at $11 - $20), blue (wines valued at
$21 - $30), and red (wines valued at $31 and higher).
Many thanks to all who donated wine
