June Book of The Month
MR MERCEDES
Stephen King
In the gloomy pre-dawn hours of a distressed Midwestern city,
hundreds of unemployed hopefuls are lined up for a job fair.
Without warning, a merciless driver plows through the crowd in
a roaring Mercedes. Eight people are killed; 15 are wounded.
The killer escapes into the early-spring fog never to be seen
from again. Until now...
Detective Bill Hodges is a battle-hardened and streetwise crime
fighter originally assigned to the Mercedes killings. Now retired,
Hodges has lost his way in boredom and depression craving the thrills of taking down
the region’s most notorious criminals. When a disturbing letter from the Mercedes Killer
arrives at his door, Hodges soon finds himself uncontrollably drawn into a cat-n-mouse
pursuit with stakes beyond comprehension.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Stephen King is a New York Times-bestselling novelist who
made his name in the horror and fantasy genres. Much of his
work has been adapted into films. Born on September 21,
1947, in Portland, Maine, he graduated from the University of
Maine & worked odd jobs while establishing himself as a writer.
His first horror novel Carrie, was a huge success.
Over the years, King became known for his frightening and critically-acclaimed titles.
Mr. Mercedes is Stephen’s first “hard-boiled detective tale.” It will transport you into a
vibrant and dangerous world filled with gritty characters living on the bleeding edge of
reason.
THE ENCHANTED
Rene Denfield
EENY MEENY
M. J. Arlidge
‘Eeny Meeny’ follows the story of DI Helen Grace as she is
faced with a series of puzzling abductions and murders, which
she and her team must fight against the clock to solve, before
the killer strikes again.
I love a good cliff-hanger and this book certainly delivers.
From the word go you are completely taken in by a narrative that paints dark and
suspenseful images in you mind. I think that’s what makes this such a great read.
When you put it down, you can still ‘see’ it.
Each character has their moment to tell you their story, which gives this novel an
almost ‘film noir’ feel about it. You get to know these characters and their lives,
allowing you to do some investigating and deduction of your own.
‘Eeny Meeny’ leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat, waiting for the next
clue to come to light. Will the team ever crack the case? Will everyone survive?
Just when you think you’ve figured it out, you realise, you haven’t.
Ashlee.
THE FEEL-GOOD HIT OF THE YEAR
Liam Pieper
The joys and perils of growing up in Melbourne with dopesmoking, hippy parents are recalled by Liam Pieper in this
wonderful memoir. His journey from schoolboy pot-head to
serious drug-dealer is both tragic and funny, and in many ways
this is a history of how the early and simplistic ideas many
people had about drugs turned dark, as the substances got heavier and criminals
got scarier.
Pieper has a clear, readable writing style, and his reminiscences about his youth,
especially when he was very young, are vivid and fascinating. His very early
years spent living in the Labassa mansion in Caulfield surrounded by hippies is
an incredible piece of Melbourne history that I had no idea of. His parents sudden
relocation to the suburbs and the beginning of problems with the authorities are
also very evocative. This is a humorous and moving memoir about the dangers of
being given too much freedom when you’re young, and Liam Pieper is a distinctive
and talented new Melbourne writer.
Paul.
Denfeld’s debut novel ‘The Enchanted’ has the strange ability to
be both horrifying and beautiful at the same time. The story takes
place within the walls of an old stone prison, in which a death row
inmate is awaiting execution. We do not know his name, nor do
we find out his crime, but we do know that he listens to the world
around him.
He hears The Lady, a death penalty investigator, as she passes through the halls to
meet her latest client. He watches as she falls in love with The Fallen Priest; a broken
man fraught with guilt. He feels the terror of The White Haired Boy as he is led to the
Hall of the Lifers. And he revels in the golden horses that run in the caverns below the
prison, shaking the very foundations of ‘this enchanted place’.
His only escape from reality is born through his love of books. By recreating his
brutal world with an edge of fantasy, he combines corruption with hope, crime with
redemption, and a stark reality with a striking imagination. Over the course of the
story, our narrator reveals that beauty can be found in even the darkest places.
Despite its grim setting, this book was enchanting and heartrending to the final page.
THE SKIN COLLECTOR
Ekaterina.
Jefferey Deaver
The Skin Collector is a sequel to Jefferey Deavers’ The Bone
Collector. It is about a disturbed tattoo artist that uses poison
rather than ink to kill his victims and prowls the underground
tunnels in the city.
Forensic Detective, Lincoln Rhyme and the Police must work
together against time to try to figure out where the killer will strike next and what the
meaning behind the tattoos are on the deceased.
I found this book to be totally gripping and I couldn’t put it down. It was full of twists
and turns, some of which were totally unexpected.
ONE MILLION LOVELY LETTERS
Karen.
Jodi Ann Bickley
This book was incredible. Jodi contracted a rare brain disease
at 22 that caused her to suffer a mini-stroke. She had to learn
to walk and write again and after all she’d endured Jodi was
then diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She made the
decision that she could either just give up on life or devote herself
to a worthwhile project. ‘One Million Lovely Letters’ is that project.
Jodi put out a call on the internet, she would write an encouraging letter to anyone
who requested one. The letters were hand written by her and sent all over the world.
This book is not only her story, but a collection of those beautiful, wonderful, inspiring
letters. This book made me laugh, made me cry and made me realise how important
those words of encouragement and affirmation are to those around you. I would
recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Buy it for your mum, your daughter,
your best friend, someone you know who needs encouragement – or just for yourself.
Because as Jodi said repeatedly in her book - you are truly wonderful.
Laura.
