She becomes fascinated by the story of Natalya, and when she meets an elderly woman who claims to know the truth behind the rumours, Lily is drawn deeper into the mystery. Reviews LOVE, LOVE ME DO SHOVEL READY Mark Haysom Love, Love Me Do. I’ll always love you. These Beatles lyrics epitomise not only the title, but how I feel about British author Mark Haysom’s debut novel of second chances and trying to find your dreams in a world too full of reality. Truman Bird is a charmer, a gambler and a fraud. In 1963 he packs his young family into the car on the premise of a summer holiday. The destination; a dilapidated caravan on the edge of Ashdown forest. Then Truman Bird disappears. For Truman’s wife Christie, life is not all she had hoped it would amount to. A young mother of three is not the career life she had envisaged at 18. How have her ambitions turned into a rejected caravan and a missing husband? A novel in five memorable perspectives, Hayson unravels the duality of menace and tenderness and the way we build narratives for ourselves. Pure, wise and at times utterly heartbreaking, “Love, Love Me Do” is a manifestation in all its (not so beautiful) forms. An emotional and unforgettable debut. . Emily. GOSPEL OF LOKI Joanne M. Harris In her youth, Joanne Harris – author of the hugely successful Chocolat – spent much of her time at the library poring over Norse mythology: a lifelong passion which has culminated in The Gospel of Loki, a retelling of the Norse myths through the eyes of Loki, the infamous God of Mischief. Many will be familiar with Loki from the Marvel films and comics, but there is a lot more to learn about his character here. Harris portrays him, not as a villain, but in a sympathetic light, as a mischief-loving outcast who struggled to find his place in Asgard. The novel reads like an anthology of anecdotes, taken straight from the original Norse myths. However, these aren’t your traditional dusty stories; Loki’s narration is modern, entertaining & humorous. Each story is an insight into a different arc of Loki’s life. Lessons, rather than chapters, tell the story. The approach works well, as each lesson starts with a title and the lesson itself before launching into the narrative e.g. Book One, Lesson Seven: Hair & beauty never trust a lover. Those titles also hint at the humor within. Harris’s Loki could come up to you today and have a conversation with you, and you’d think he’d lived in the 21st century all his life. Loki might be mischievous, and heartless, and selfish, but the rest of the gods, from Thor to Sif to Odin are even worse. Of course, we only see them through Loki’s eyes, so we’re biased, but you can’t help but love Loki and dislike everyone he dislikes. Like many so called “villains,” he is the hero of his own story. Adam Sternbergh “Shovel Ready” is really a combination of a few genres, notably dystopian science-fiction and hard-boiled crime, and a pleasing mixture it makes. There appears to be a trend at the moment, especially in the US, for genre-blending novels, and recently we’ve had Warren Ellis’s “Gun Machine” and Lauren Beukes’s “The Shining Girls”, to name but two - done well it can be very satisfying, with all the critique and intelligence of good sci-fi fused with the violence, twists and dry-wit of pulp noir. The novel’s anti-hero, known only as Spademan, is a former garbageman turned hitman, in a future New York depopulated by a series of terrorist attacks; he’s a killer but has a morality of sorts, the sort of twisted code that only makes sense in the crazy world he lives in. When he’s contracted to kill the daughter of a powerful religious figure events quickly spin out of control. Sternbergh’s punchy, spare prose is a good fit for the material, and is particularly effective during action scenes where the lack of description actually heightens the excitement, as you try to fill in the gaps between the few words you’re given. I also enjoyed the futuristic setting, particularly the “limnospere”, a virtual reality world that only the rich can afford, and which leaves the Internet as the preserve of the poor. A fast-paced, stylish page-turner, with the best bits of a few genres. It’s as good as it sounds. SHOCK OF THE FALL Paul. Nathan Filer The COSTA prize award-winning novel Shock of the Fall tells the story of Matthew Homes, a mentally ill teenager suffering from the loss of his special needs brother, Simon. Author Nathan Filer makes his debut with this deeply moving story; in it, we experience the inner workings of a genuinely disturbed boy recounting his experiences and intentionally exposing himself through his own book - Where the Moon Isn’t. As the story unfolds the insight we gain into Matthews’s troubled mind leaves us haunted and deeply sorrowed. As we delve deeper into Matthew’s own book we begin to realize that he is not the most reliable of narrators, yet it is Matthew’s unforgettable and damaged voice that holds this beautiful narrative together firmly and effortlessly. Shock of the Fall has left me both speechless and amazed at how beautifully it is written; I would recommend to all readers looking to be both engaged and moved. Shock of the Fall is a must read for all. Bo. Kate & Talisha. NORTHANGER ABBEY Val McDermid TWO WOLVES Tristan Bancks feed.’ Ben Silver is a pretty ordinary kid, really. Chubby, shy and dreamy, he spends most of his time in the fantasy worlds that exist in online computer games, and in the animated films that he makes. He likes mysteries, and he likes to figure things out. His dad evens call him “Cop”, and it’s a nickname he quite likes. His life doesn’t hold too many surprises. But a surprise visit from real police officers one afternoon sees him and his sister Olive bundled away on a suspiciously hasty “holiday” to their grandfather’s cabin. Nothing feels right anymore. What’s going on? What have his parents been hiding from him? Does he really want to know? But like it or not, Ben will have to face some difficult choices soon, choices that will affect him and his loved ones in profound ways. This is an ambitious and gripping novel for confident younger readers. The hero is very engaging and a bit of an oddball - maybe the reason I found him so engaging! Two Wolves will certainly provoke thought on issues of loyalty, family and ethics. A good choice for a school book club possibly, or for anyone who likes an adventure that challenges as much as it entertains. The Austen Project is a tribute to Jane Austen and Northanger Abbey - book #2 is the one I have been waiting for. It is my favourite Jane Austen - the first she wrote - and the last one to make it to print. It is a deliciously gothic satire. Val McDermid’s breezy, inventive reworking of it radically shifts the location from Bath to Edinburgh and propels it two centuries forward, embracing text-speak, the worlds of the Twilight movies and wifi. Austen’s heroine, Catherine Morland, here known as Cat – “on the basis that nobody should emerge from their teens with the name their parents had chosen” – is in thrall to gothic literature. Vampires stalk her imagination. In Edinburgh, far from her sheltered life as a vicar’s daughter in deepest Dorset, Cat is introduced to Henry at a dance class where she is the rookie and he the tutor, and when she learns that his family home is Northanger Abbey in the Scottish Borders, she almost swoons, envisaging “The kind of historic building that ends up starring” – or so she hopes – “in a film adaptation of some heart-stopping book about vampires or Jane Austen heroines or ancestral ghosts.” Northanger Abbey, with its forbidden tangle of corridors and rooms, its hidden objects, becomes fertile ground for Cat’s rampant fantasies, fuelling the notion that the Tilneys are, in truth, a clutch of vampires. McDermid relishes both satirising and celebrating the comic-gothic genre – at times quoting Austen’s text verbatim. I can’t wait to read the other five “updates” while also joyfully, rereading the originals. Annette. Susanne. A grandfather tells his grandson one evening that there is a battle raging inside him, inside all of us. A terrible battle between two wolves. One wolf is bad – pride, jealousy, greed. The other wolf is good – kindness, hope, truth. The child asks, ‘Who will win?’ The grandfather answers simply, ‘The one you Best Sellers Fiction 1.
