Thank you all so much for your generous support of the 110th season
of the Southampton Fresh Air Home. Your donations to our camp gave
over 150 physically challenged children the opportunity to enjoy all of
the things their able-bodied peers enjoy: swimming, sailing, sports, dancing,
trips to the beach, arts, crafts, computers and so much more. Each and
every day at the Fresh Air Home is a magical time for our children, many
of whom come from urban settings and apartment living, where the things
they do here daily would otherwise be considered impossible.
Participating in the camp during the summer, in a beautiful nature
setting, is an opportunity for our children to gain self-confidence, physical
strength, increased agility and the recognition that they can become a
contributing and special member of their communities. I am continually
inspired by their courage, spirit and love of life!
Kim White (center) with fellow Board members
Susan Nappa Cocke (l) and Catherine Carey (r),
and SFAH camper Amanda at the Open House.
It was another wonderful summer for the children. They enjoyed
activities under the new awning that provides much needed shade on the
back deck, as well as a “Daytime Disco” in the arts and crafts workshop.
Day trips included golf lessons at Shinnecock Golf Club, tennis lessons
at Southampton Meadow Club and visits to the Southampton Animal
Shelter. The new photography club and a surprise visit by a Michael Jackson
impersonator were big hits, and the Holmes Party and Rotary Club Lunch
continue to be camp favorites. Many of the children went to activities in
our new van that was provided by generous grants from our Men’s
Committee. We thank them all for their support of the children!
This summer, we held our first ever SFAH Alumni Day. Over 40 former campers came from near and far to spend a day
with our current campers. It was a joy to see how they have grown and matured. Another Alumni party is already scheduled,
along with several retreat weekends for our campers to reconnect and enjoy the autumn and spring in Southampton.
This year we are excited to announce our wonderful collaboration with the Flying Point Foundation for Autism. Their children
were able to enjoy our facility in the late summer days after our regular camp season finished. It is always a great satisfaction
to introduce new friends to the beauty and benefits that our facility provides. We look forward to continuing to grow our
relationship with Flying Point in the future.
As I finish my third and final year as President, I want to take a moment to say a special thank you and wish a fond farewell
to Kathleen Minder, our executive director who retired from the Fresh Air Home this past spring after spending 10 years with
us. Kathleen helped to guide the Home during a time of tremendous change and revitalization. Her dedication and leadership
helped us achieve many of our goals including the construction of our new dormitories. Kathleen will be missed by all of us,
and we wish her much luck in all her future endeavors.
Southampton continues to be a welcoming home away from home for our children. Our local businesses, neighbors and
our cherished volunteers are vital to our success. I cannot thank you enough for all of your crucial, generous support that allows
us to continue our mission. It has been my honor to serve as President for the past three years. I ask you to join me in welcoming
our new President, Michaela Keszler, as we embark on another year of providing this much needed retreat and respite to so
many deserving children and their families.
With sincerest thanks and gratitude,
Kim White

SFAH Mission Statement
The Southampton Fresh Air Home is a not-for-profit residential camp for physically challenged youth. Our mission is to
provide an enriching, recreational camping experience. Through a broadly balanced program, we are committed to helping
our campers develop physically, emotionally, and educationally, with the goal of fostering self-esteem, maturity and
independence, while providing their families with a well-deserved respite.
The organization is dedicated to improving and expanding its programs and facilities as new opportunities,
technology and financial support become available.

A NOTE TO OUR SUPPORTERS
Each year the Southampton Fresh
Air Home makes every effort to
include the names of all our
generous supporters. If we have
incorrectly listed or omitted your
name, we sincerely apologize.
Please alert us of any errors so
that we may list you correctly in
our next annual report. If you
have changed your name, or that
of your affiliation, please call or
write to us so that we may
change our records and
acknowledge you appropriately
in the future.
OUR NURSING PROGRAM
The nurses of the Southampton Fresh Air Home are such a vital part of our camper’s experience. We are so lucky to have
an amazing team of dedicated, compassionate nurses who return year after year. Their presence is integral in making the
sleep away camp experience possible for our physically challenged children.
In 2011, the Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation made a generous grant to the Southampton Fresh Air Home designated
for our nursing program. In recognition of this donation, and for all the wonderful work our nurses do, we asked camper
Richard Bedard to speak to his camp nurses Pat Boland and Joyce Lydon and find out what it is they love about SFAH that has
them coming back year after year. Together, they have a combined 15 years of nursing experience with us.
Richard Bedard at camp.
I am Richard Bedard, I am 16 years
old and I love attending camp at SFAH.
The first year I went to SFAH, I was very
nervous about being away from home.
You could say that the nurses had to help
me cure my home sickness (lol). That’s
before I knew how much fun camp
could be. I’m a pro camper now, but I
am still mandated to stop to see the
nurses before I can go to my bunk,
because the nurses are serious about
reviewing the paperwork from my
doctor. I depend on them to give me
medicines, to bandage my boo-boos and
ease my pain when my muscles and
joints tighten up.
The SFAH nurses have a lot of
patience with me and the campers. My
brother, who also has a disability,
attended another camp before coming to
SFAH. They put him in the infirmary and
eventually sent him home early from that
other camp. Unlike the SFAH nurses,
their nurses had no desire to take care of
my brother who was not sick, just handicapped. It was very demoralizing for
him. Now he attends SFAH and he is
very happy.
So I know for sure that my brother
Andrew and I wouldn’t be able to attend
camp at all without nurses like those at
SFAH, who take extremely good care of
handicapped kids like us with special
needs. The SFAH nurses help make it
possible for a kid like me to be safe,
while I thoroughly enjoy myself, make
long term friends and create memories
that will stay with me for the rest of my
life.
RB: How is being a nurse at SFAH
summer camp different from your
regular nursing job during the year?
Joyce: There are so many differences
between my regular job as a school
nurse and my summer job at SFAH that
it’s hard to know where to begin. First of
all, in my regular job, I only care for
students in grades 10 to 12 whereas
there is a much bigger range at camp.
At camp, I have to be ready to switch
my approach and maybe even my
technique at a moment’s notice. Caring
for an 8 year old is so different from
caring for an 18 year old.
The atmosphere at camp is so
relaxed that it’s really fun to be there. I
give more medications at camp. That’s a
big part of the SFAH job and a very small
part of what I do at school. I love that I
can listen to rock music in the infirmary
which would never be accepted in the
health office at my high school. I have
so many laughs at camp between the
campers and the counselors and the staff
and laughter is such a healing thing.
Probably the biggest difference is
that I care for lots of children with
complicated medical problems at camp,
and most of the students at school don’t
have to deal with the challenges that the
campers have to deal with. The campers
meet these challenges with humor and
grit and that encourages me to meet
mychallenges with grace whenever
possible. My job at SFAH is sometimes
too enjoyable and rewarding to be
called work!
RB: Is your job as a camp nurse at SFAH
very stressful? Why or why not.
Joyce: My job at SFAH is stressful in
that it is physically demanding. The days
start early and end late and I am very
grateful for the comfortable nurses’
13

quarters at the end of the day. I’m so
thankful for our golf cart which allows
us to get places quickly and easily. The
demanding job has a great flip side…
it’s incredibly rewarding work.
RB: What do you like most about being
a nurse at SFAH?
Pat: I love the joy and excitement
all of the staff and kids experience every
day while at camp. It becomes a wonderful
and loving extended family for me every
summer, and I carry those memories
with me during the rest of the year.
Joyce: What I like most about being
a nurse at SFAH is getting to know all
the campers. There is a huge range of
challenges and personalities. That diversity
is very enjoyable. It’s a wonderful thing
that staff from all over the world and
campers of many stripes come together
to form one big happy family. The
atmosphere at camp is so positive that
it’s a truly magical place where miracles
happen every day!
RB: What is the most difficult aspect of
your nursing job at SFAH?
Pat: The most difficult aspect of my
job at camp at times are the very long
days, being a camp nurse is a 24-hour
job. But knowing I have the support of
the staff and the campers makes my
day’s work fun and worth it.
RB: Imagine that your friends are
looking to work as camp nurses. What

WE SA LUTE THE HONORA RY BOARD
The Southampton Fresh Air Home is fortunate to have a number of current and former Board members who have served
with distinction as Directors. Their leadership, dedication, wisdom, hard work and inspiration have contributed to the overall
health and stability of the Home. It is for this reason, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to create an Honorary Board
of Directors to acknowledge outstanding contributions.
In 2011, Helga Dawn-Frohling, Sophy P.- Q. Haynes, and Claire Mulholland were elected as the first members of the
Southampton Fresh Air Home Honorary Board of Directors.
landscaping. With the help of landscape
architect Peter Ernst, Helga created a
plan for the land that the Home sits on
that reveals her great eye for scale and
her singular understanding of the unique
ecology of the East End.
Helga Dawn-Frohling (right) with Diane Vahradian.
Helga Dawn-Frohling served on the
SFAH Board of Directors for the better
part of two decades. She was invited by
Sally Newell to serve on the Board, and
was initially hesitant to join because she
didn’t think of herself as a fundraiser.
One of her first tasks was to chair the
rummage sale at the Southampton High
School gym – an event the Home was
well known for at the time, and which
later became our beloved DDD sale.
Helga fondly recalls the phone call
she received saying she was picked
as one of our first Honorary Board
members: “The Fresh Air Home has
meant a great deal to me ever since I
joined the Board in 1989. I was so
honored to be asked.”
One of Helga’s greatest gifts to the
Home and its children has been her
consistent ability to bring wonderful new
friends into the fold. Helga encouraged
Southampton residents and new friends
to make considerable donations over the
years, she was instrumental in introducing
others to the Home and our mission,
including her good friends Mrs. Werner
Otto and Kim White.
Today, Helga remains very proud of
her accomplishments, especially the

Her outreach to the community gained
much needed support.
Sophy talked about the day she
received the phone call notifying her of
her appointment to the Honorary Board.
“It was such a surprise. I couldn’t believe
it. Back in my day, there was no formal
Board. Most of the work was going on
in our living rooms.” This year, Sophy
attended the Annual Meeting of the
Board of Directors of the Fresh Air Home
and commented on the tremendous
change: “It was like going from a log
cabin to the Empire State Building! “ The
appointment clearly means so much to
her.
It made her remember the day that
the health and fire departments told her
they would have to shut the camp down.
It was the fall of 1978. I was alone at
the camp with the fire and health
inspectors when they told me our current
buildings were unsafe. The thought never
occurred to me to shut the place down. I
asked them for a year and simply told
them that we would build new buildings.
I got my friends together to raise the
money we needed.”
Sophy was influential in the transformation of the Home, helping to move it
into the 20th Century. She and her
generation of Board leaders lit the torch
which we have carried into the 21st
century. She embodies the spirit that
pushes us forward.
Claire Mulholland (left) with Kathleen Minder.
Claire Mulholland joined the Board
of Directors in 1984. She went on to
serve as Vice President, President and
Chairman of the Board. In 2002, Claire
became Chairman Emeritus, a position
she still holds.
Claire’s passion has been contagious.
She has introduced countless new
friends to the Home and raised millions
of dollars for its programs. She introduced
and linked caring local individuals
and organizations providing the Home
and its campers with valuable services
to ensure the continued growth and
improvement of the camper's experiences
year after year. Claire comments on her

appointment as one of the Home’s first
Honorary Board members: “My dream
was always to enable and ennoble our
campers and to have the best possible
facility. Now it has come true. It’s nice to
be honored for the part I played in this.”
During her time as president, she
spoke to hundreds of parents and
campers, making sure that the Home’s
services met their needs and fulfilled
their dreams of increased independence
and self-reliance. The campers and their
families provided Claire with constant
inspiration and new ideas. Claire knew
each child and parent personally. She listened to their hopes and learned just
how much the Home meant to each of
them.
She and her husband Jim funded
the construction of the Mulholland
Computer Center and the Mulholland
Health Center, both a lasting legacy of
their commitment to the children.
It is our honor to celebrate the all the
gifts that Helga, Sophy and Claire have
given the Southampton Fresh Air Home.
We salute you!
NURSING PROGRAM continued…
will you tell them to convince them that
SFAH should be their #1 choice?
Pat: SFAH is a not just a place but
a journey. My life has grown in ways I
never expected. The campers’ wisdom,
humility and fun for life has lifted my
heart and humbled me. I feel blessed to
have been able to be part of the lives
of all of these children through my years
at SFAH. The support of the Board
Members and their commitment to the
children is seen and felt by the staff in
how the camp is supported by their
generosity and time spent for the good
of the children.
