A letter from the Executive Director
As I look back on 2015, there are many moments that fill me with pride and gratitude for all that
you have done to help support the children and families we serve. Thank you for being that
special someone who cares so deeply about the community. You are making a difference.
Because of You.
This past year we lost our dear friend Fran Payne, the Executive Director at Jack & Jill for almost
forty years. She truly changed the landscape for young children and their families throughout
Broward County. She was a revolutionary woman before her time with her ability to understand
the importance of early childhood education and the value that family stability brings. She
changed many lives; from the children who she demanded the best quality for, to the families
that she took the time to understand and help, to the community that she called upon to be her partner in making a
difference. She was a role model and helped set forth a cause that is still thriving. Her legacy lives on.
My favorite word is hope: a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. I firsthand understand the struggle
as a child living in poverty and finding hope through the helping hands of others. My mother was a single parent of two who
had very limited resources. If it wasn’t for those who lent a helping hand along the way, I know I would not be where I am
today. You may not see the difference right away but you are setting the foundation for greatness in our children and families.
My hope is that you will always remember it is because of your generosity that all of this is possible.
Heather Siskind
A year in review
CHILD IMPACT




Over 260 children served by our programs and services.
Launched the Center’s first afterschool program for children five to twelve years of age.
Provided on-site therapeutic services to 30 children through partnerships with other agencies.
All of our VPK graduates scored 100% on their kindergarten readiness test.
Partnered with United Way Reading Pals program to provide all of our VPK students a reading pal.
Served over 80,000 meals to our children throughout the year.
FAMILY IMPACT







60 families participated in our parent education series.
Our food and clothing pantry was accessed by families 125 times this year.
Distributed over 360 bags of groceries to our families through the United Way Project Lifeline program.
Provided 155 families with Thanksgiving baskets, holiday gifts and Easter baskets through partnerships with local
businesses, schools and individual donors.
Assisted 41 families with over $16,000 emergency assistance through Jack & Jill or other community agencies.
Reduced the risk of abuse and neglect from our ten week parenting education program from 44% to 11% for our
36 families who took the course.
Launched a new five week series, Health Matters, for our parents. Also, provided the Financial Literacy Course with
Bank of America and the Employment Empowerment Course with Citrix.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
 Hosted the 8th Annual Community Health Fair partnering with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
“Docs Program” and the Forum on Women’s Health which provided over 100 individuals with health care services.
 Hosted the 10th year of FREE tax preparation to our community residents in partnership with Hispanic Unity.
 Hosted the Fifth Third Bank eBus offering our families and the community a mobile classroom featuring financial wellness.
The following services were offered: free credit reports, credit card counseling, identity alert, budget preparation,
homeownership, and savings and budgeting.
 Provided a summer youth program in partnership with a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward. Over 125
volunteers participated in the summer program with 25 volunteers taking the 45 Hour Childcare training course.
Watch them grow Because of You.
Because of you we are able to continue to improve our quality through innovative
programming and services based on best practices. There is a special focus on social
emotional development through continuity of care and primary care giving which
allows a teacher and child to remain together for several years.
Because of you we are able to have good teacher to student ratios in all of our classrooms.
All of our teachers are highly educated and continue their training and professional
development throughout the year. Our program uses a high quality research based
curriculum so our children can reach their developmental milestones and beyond.
Because of you we are able to provide a comprehensive family strengthening program that
provides intensive parent education, life skills training, therapeutic services, an on-site
computer lab, food and clothing pantry and emergency assistance. As a result, parents gain
confidence, children perform and behave better at home and in the classroom, and
families function at higher levels of stability.
Because of you we were able to enhance our USDA food program for breakfast, lunch and
snack which is offered free to all of our children. We offer additional servings of fresh fruit
and milk to all of our children and working with a registered dietician.
Because of you our recent graduates scored 100% on the Kindergarten Readiness test
given by the Broward County Public Schools. So, all of our children were prepared
to attend kindergarten!
You are their shelter from the storm
Lisa, a mother of two, has experienced more heartache in
life than she ever could have imagined. From being a
domestic violence survivor, to experiencing two
miscarriages, to becoming homeless, Ms. Lisa has kept going.
When asked what has kept her going, one thing she said was
having Jack & Jill Children’s Center as a constant in her family’s
life. Thinking back to when Ms. Lisa first enrolled her youngest
daughter while staying in a shelter, she recalled, “with all the
homelessness, and not knowing what else was coming, I relied
on my daughter’s school.”
In addition to living in a
shelter, Ms. Lisa's only
family, her mother, lives in a
different state, which has
resulted in Jack and Jill
becoming a second family to
her. When asked about the
teachers, she stated, “they
don’t just remember our child's names, they know their likes
and dislikes, and their moods. They listen to them. They talk to
them. The teachers treat my daughter just like she is their own
child. These ladies not only show kindness and love to my
daughters, but also reach out to me on a family level. There is
no mistaking, these ladies/teachers/moms are in the right
place and extend their hearts.”
Recently, Lisa lost her fiancé in a pedestrian accident but
was able to turn to Jack & Jill for support. Our Family
Strengthening Team was able to provide assistance to Lisa
through the use of Emergency Assistance Programs and
our on-site Food and Clothing Pantry. All of these services
were made possible through your generous donations.
Because of you, she was able to gain support through her
time of need. In her many turmoil’s, Lisa has been able to
build endurance, to grow strength, and to gain a family
along the way through Jack & Jill and our generous
supporters. She stands strong and proudly states,
“We are not victims. We are survivors.”
Because of You.
Currently, Ms. Lisa and her little
ones are unpacking their own
apartment, finally being able to
leave the shelter behind through
Jack & Jill’s and our donor’s help.
She made the decision to move
close to her family and friends at
Jack & Jill, in order to “keep my
daughters close to the ladies they
love and whom have given us
stability in knowing we are not
alone through our loss. Bless you.”
