From the Rabbi’s Desk
As you read this, Meira and I will have
just returned from Israel; that will be
the topic of my Bulletin article for
April. Please reserve the weekend of
March 16-18, which will be our annual
Scholar-In-Residence program. In
addition, the Shabbat morning Service
is part of Men’s Club Shabbat, which
will add that much more to the
weekend. Please join us for all or any
part of this wonderful annual program.
Better yet, become a Patron!

NOTE S
FROM
THE
CANTOR
HANDEL, ESTHER AND THAT OLD TIME ROCK ‘N ROLL
MEGILLAH SCROLL
In our December bulletin I wrote an article entitled Handel, Judah Maccabbee and the Jews
which, if you hopefully have read, provides a context for what follows here.
The great composer George Frideric Handel is famous for, among other music, his 14 biblical
oratorios composed in the early 18th century, in which he portrayed the Jews in the most positive
light.
Handel’s first oratorio that was positively disposed towards the Jews was “Esther” which
debuted in London in 1732. The Venetian Rabbi Jacob Saraval was so impressed with it that in 1759
he translated its English libretto into Hebrew using actual text from the Biblical Esther. Since Handel
died that year, the impetus and opportunity for performing the Hebrew version was lost, and it was
never actually performed in Hebrew until February 2002 around Purim, when the Israeli Early-Music
specialist Shalev Ad-El led a performance at New York City’s 92nd Street Y.
Even the original English version of Handel’s Esther as well as some of his other oratorios were
somewhat eclipsed by his great Messiah oratorio. The 1985 tricentennial of Handel’s birth began a
revival of interest in his Esther when the artistic director of the Handel and Haydn Society,
Christopher Hogwood led the orchestra and choir of London’s Academy of Ancient Music in a
recording of Esther using period instruments. This was to become the first in a series of Handel’s
works Hogwood recorded in chronological order for Decca Records.
One of the reasons the Hebrew version took 270 years for its debut performance is that there are
several versions of the music. Ad-El researched all these to create his own match between the
musical notes and the words. The English libretto took some poetic liberty whereas the Hebrew was
mostly authenticated to the Bible. Another problem for Ad-El was that 18th century Hebrew did not
sound like contemporary Hebrew. Ad-El was particularly keen to premier a Baroque masterpiece in
his spoken modern Hebrew tongue.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had the opportunity to hear a performance of the Hebrew
Esther oratorio. What a meaningful way it would be to bridge 250 years of Jewish and musical
history! Could Rabbi Saraval (or Handel for that matter) have anticipated the rebirth of the modern
Israel and Hebrew as a living spoken language? After all one of the underlying themes of Purim is
the synthesizing of Jewish and secular culture.
Here in Toledo and at B’nai israel we might not (yet!) be privileged to hear Handel’s Esther live
but you won’t want to miss our version of the events of Purim in our own production That Old Time
Rock ‘N Roll Megillah Scroll at 7pm on March 7th!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
We had a very enlightening morning on February 12th to celebrate ability during Jewish
Disabilities Awareness month. The kids had the opportunity to hear author and former
People magazine associate editor/senior writer Tom Fields-Meyer’s heartfelt presentation
about his touching relationship with his son, Ezra, and their special journey. This
presentation was for the 6th- 10th graders and the entire community. The younger students
experienced various hands-on activities for disability awareness, including a visit from the
Agility Dogs. We will remember this morning for some time.

Mehirat Hametz – The Selling of Hametz
The sale of hametz is conducted between a
representative of the community (the synagogue)
and a non-Jew. After Passover the hametz is
repurchased by the Jewish community. If you would
like Rabbi Saks to sell your hametz, please fill out
the form and return it to the synagogue office not
later than Thursday, April 5, immediately following
morning minyan.
Preparation for Passover
The ceremony of removing leaven (bedikat
Hametz) is to take place Thursday April 5. Hametz
may be eaten until 10:00 a.m. on Friday April 6.
The Passover home atmosphere is created each
year by the traditional practice of thoroughly
cleansing the home in all parts, and by the removal
of hametz, or leaven, in preparation for the
welcoming of Pesach, as well as throughout the
Passover days, both at home and away.
The term hametz is applied not only to foods, but
also to the dishes and utensils in which the foods are
prepared or served during the year.
“Any manner of hametz (leavened food or
utensils) owned by a Jew during the Passover
holiday is forbidden to use forever.” Since conditions
make it impossible to literally fulfill the Biblical
command to destroy all leavened products, our
sages instituted a practice called Mehirat Hametz,
the selling of hametz, so the Torah’s command
would not be completely ignored.
Jews are
reminded of the necessity to divest themselves of
ownership of hametz and make their home ritually
ready.
Don’t Sell All your Hametz!
When cleaning out our cupboard and pantry in
preparation for Pesach, consider donating unopened
packages of hametz and canned goods to a food
pantry. Items such as crackers, rice, cookies, lentils,
tuna, and peanut butter will be gratefully accepted by
these organizations and passed on to those whose
cupboards are empty. Let those who are hungry this
Passover season share in your celebration by
receiving food that you might otherwise sell. Food
can be brought to the synagogue where a receptacle
will be clearly marked.………………………….
Authorization for Sale of Hametz
I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Moshe Saks to act in my behalf to sell all hametz possessed by
me – knowingly or unknowingly – as defined by Torah and rabbinic law, and to lease all places wherein hametz owned
may be found. This transaction will be in effect for the duration of Pesach. Must be in the office by April 5, 2012.
And to this I hereby affix my signature on this _________ day of ____________, in the year 2012.

CBI Sisterhood Mishloach Manot Project
We are once again doing the Mishloach Manot project. It was such a big success the last two

And here’s the best part – you don’t have to go shopping, prepare the basket, or do anything!
We at Sisterhood will do everything for you. Simply fill out the form below. Send a Mishloach
Manot basket for Purim. We will do the rest.
Happy Purim!!

If you enjoy sharing Shabbat with the congregation at our weekly
Kiddush Luncheon following services, please consider
SPONSORING A KIDDUSH to mark special occasions or to honor
or remember friends and family. Additionally, contributions made to
the Kiddush Fund help underwrite the kiddush on those occasions
when there are no designated sponsors.
For more information, please call the synagogue office,
419-517-8400.
Interested in Sponsoring a Kiddush?
The cost of sponsoring a Kiddush is:
Standard Kiddush - $250.00; or
Standard plus kugel - $275.00; or
Standard plus kugel and lox - $325.00.
This cost is based on the regular 50-70 Shabbat attendees. The cost includes paper goods
and plastic linens. Please let us know if you anticipate more than the regular 50-70 Shabbat
attendees as that will also impact the cost. Your name will also appear in the weekly Torah Guide
as the sponsor of the kiddush and will be highlighted in the monthly congregational bulletin.
You may also decide instead to host a kiddush luncheon. In order to host a luncheon, you
must hire an approved caterer and contract directly with the caterer to prepare and provide the
food. When using a caterer, there is a $100 charge to use the kitchen from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day
that it is used by the caterer, and $100 charge during each evening after 5 pm.
If you would like to have the tables set, Julie can set the tables and you would be charged
hourly for her time. Alternatively, if you wish to have tables set, and you have the time and wish to
do so, you may set the tables yourself. If you would like linens, you can call and contract directly
from Merideth (419-531-9977). The shul will order linens for you from Morgan (419-243-2214) only
if you have the precise number of linens required three weeks before your event. You may choose
to hire waitstaff; the caterer must arrange this for you. Also, if you wish to use dishes, there will be
an additional hourly charge for a dishwasher.
Again, your name will also appear in the weekly Torah Guide as the host of the kiddush and
will be highlighted in the monthly congregational bulletin.
The information here is a general guideline. If you do wish to sponsor or host the Kiddush
please let Kandee know, and we will generate an estimated invoice for the shul's cost. As always,
we very much appreciate your support of the shul.
