June 2009 - Delaware County Christian School
Del a wa r e C o ol o u n t y C hr i s t i a n S c h elementary & Upper Campus Life Newsletter June 2009 A new beginning Stephen P. Dill, Ed.D. Head of School Friday, June 5, was a day of mixed emotions for me. I started the day in elementary faculty devotions. The DC faculty began the last day of school at the DC Elementary Campus in the same way we began the first day back in 1983 – by taking a few minutes to read a chapter from the Word of God (in this case, Psalm 76) and pray together. We prayed for students, families, and our school. Faculty beginning each day with scripture reading and prayer has been – and will continue to be – an essential component of life at DC. The elementary praise chapel was a wonderful time of enthusiastic praise singing of hymns and children’s choruses. Miss Bell read a number of reflections about our elementary campus from parents and faculty, and about 20 students shared their memories. It was such an encouragement to me to see more than 300 children praising God with such enthusiasm. Shared memories included accepting Christ as saviour, special times with faculty, and memories from the playground. I am excited about our move to a new campus, but I have many fond memories of faculty, students, and meaningful moments over the past 26 years at our Newtown Square elementary campus. God has done many things in the lives of more than 2000 students who were enrolled during those years. The rest of my day included meetings and phone calls, with quite a few regarding our upcoming settlement and move to the Devon campus. And then I made my way out to Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, where we hold Senior Commencement. If you have not been to a DC graduation ceremony, you should make an effort to do so in the future. The students that God has brought to DC make graduation an inspirational event. Nearly half of the 89 members of the Class of 2009 had attended DC since kindergarten or first grade. Student DC’s 52nd graduating class — The Class of 2009 speeches and testimonies – in word and in song – were the highlight of the evening. These student reflections gave ample evidence that DC students are being well prepared to think and act biblically. The speakers expressed their gratitude to the DC faculty – elementary through high school – multiple times. As I looked at the faces of each of those graduates, I was struck with the ample evidence of the truth stated by DC’s first headmaster, Dr. Roy Lowrie: “An education in which Jesus Christ is central will influence the whole course of your child’s life.” As I drove home late Friday night, I couldn’t help thanking God for the opportunity to serve Him in a school that is dedicated to Him. God has been at work at DC for the past 59 years, and we continue to look to Him to guide us as we begin our 60th year in September. The new year will bring a new campus, new students, new faculty, and new excitement about learning. Thank you Lord for your blessings on DC. Board of Trustees farewell to Class of 2009 On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to congratulate you on graduating from high school. It is an important time in your life, and I hope that your time at DC has prepared you for whatever God has in store for you. God has designed each of you for a specific purpose, and it will be exciting to see you progress to the next step on this journey. Your parents have made many sacrifices to help you get to this point in life, not only financially, but in many other ways as well. Please be sure to thank them. Our mission statement is “To educate students who will serve God and impact the world through biblical thought and action.” My prayer for your class is that you are prepared for college, and by continuing to serve God, that you will impact the world for His kingdom. The committee is comprised of six members (William Tice, Mike LoRusso, Rob Dolan, David Nichols, Jay Glasscott, and David Smyth) and has responsibilities in three key areas: Financial Advisory / Monitoring, Endowment Investment, and the Annual Audit. Each of these three areas is discussed below: Financial Advisory / Monitoring: Here the Finance Committee serves as an educator and advisor to both the Administration and the Board of Trustees. The committee is charged with reviewing the proposed annual budget and any planned capital expenditures, as well as monitoring key ratios for institutional financial health and trends. The committee also reviews the Operating Income Statement and cash position on a monthly basis along with any financial proposals that must come before the board for approval. The committee itself has no approval authority in these matters, but in essence, serves as a “sounding board” for the Administration and the Board of Trustees. Endowment Investment: In this area the Finance Committee has a stewardship responsibility to see that funds are preserved for their specific purpose. These funds, though separated as permanently restricted and temporarily restricted, are viewed as one investment and are invested following the “Prudent Man Rule.” This rule is defined as follows: The trustee may invest in a security if it is one that would be bought by a prudent man of discretion and intelligence, who is seeking a reasonable income and preservation of capital. The funds are diversified and invested with a long-term view and an asset allocation mix that is in keeping with the risk tolerance set by the committee and the Board of Trustees. Annual Audit: Each year the Finance Committee is charged with appointing an external auditor to conduct an audit of DC financial operations and financial position. For the past few years DC has retained Kimmel, Lorah & Associates, LLP Certified Public Accountants in this regard. This process includes conducting a pre-audit meeting with the external auditor to set the specifications and scope of the outside audit. The committee also meets with the auditor to conduct a post audit review to discuss the findings from the audit, which are then documented in a letter to both the committee and Senior Management. Based on these findings, the Finance Committee then determines any specific areas of focus for the upcoming year including the direct inspection of source documents for compliance with the DC Policy Manual. On behalf of the Finance Committee, I would ask that you continue to pray for the Board of Trustees, the Administration and Faculty, and all of the various committees as we seek God’s will for the continued success and future of DC. In His Service, William Tice Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair Dear Society Members, As the Board endeavors to work effectively at providing efficient oversight management of Delaware County Christian School, the Board recognizes the importance of supporting and maintaining a close relationship with the Head of School on a consistent basis. In order to sustain this position, the Board has implemented a new standing committee this school year. The new committee is called the Head of School Support Committee. The committee is comprised of both Board and Society Members. The primary purpose of the committee is to administer, tabulate and report on the Head of School Evaluation Survey. The Head of School Evaluation Survey is an annual process by which the Board evaluates the job performance of the Head of School against the established guidelines set in our policy. In previous years, the Board Chair administered the survey to each Board Member, collected and analyzed the data, reported on the results of the survey and then communicated the performance evaluation to the Head of School along with the Board Vice President. The Head of School Support Committee will now administer the evaluation survey to Board members. The committee will collect, analyze and tabulate the data as it relates to adherence to policy guidelines, provide a report to the Board and write the performance evaluation with recommendations to be presented to the Head of School by the Board Chair. This new process thereby allows for a more efficient and thorough analysis of the data collected and a pointed view of area(s) of improvement or opportunity for the Head of School. A secondary purpose of the committee, as the name denotes, is to provide support to the Head of School. This support is not to be construed as the Board’s involvement with the Head of School’s administration or operational duties, rather our charge is to provide access to resources that the Head of School may not otherwise have access to, as well as to provide any support or counseling when requested by the Head of School. We believe that this committee will be a valuable tool to the Board and to the Head of School as we desire to seek God’s vision for Delaware County Christian School and to do the Lord’s will in advancing His Kingdom. Please keep us in prayer and thank you for your commitment to DC. John and Pina Templeton, parents of two DC alumni and longtime supporters of the school. Each Templeton Scholarship -- beginning with the 2009-10 school year -- will provide $1,500 to help fund DC tuition and fees. The scholarships are awarded on a year-by-year basis. The criteria for these scholarships include academic aptitude (students who are leaning toward further academic studies related to a career in science may be given preference in the scholarship selection process), proven academic performance (required G.P.A. 3.75/4.0 or 95/100) and Christian commitment (evidenced by school, church, and community involvement). An essay in response to the question -- How can I use my God-given abilities in ways that will honor Him? -- is also part of the application process. The Scholarship Selection Committee, composed of DC faculty, make the scholarship selections in the spring of each school year. The scholarships are a one-year renewable award for high school and were initiated with the Class of 2011. A student who receives a Templeton Scholarship for the advancing school year is not guaranteed of receiving it for the coming year(s). Four individual scholarships at $1,500 each have been awarded for the Classes of 2011, 2012 and 2013. I got to know friends better. People who you thought you knew by the way they acted at school, were different: once they were separated from people with whom they normally hang out, you saw a different side of them, and it was good....I gained respect. I would definitely love to go back to this eye-opening experience to who I was...it opened up a whole new view of God’s creation - not just nature-wise, but also of people surrounding me. D.L. BROWNE It was fun, got to hang out with my friends....one of the field trips that was exciting, enjoyable to learn about God’s creation and how things work. I got to know some of my peers better. The challenge course was a big part of changing you... the way you act towards others, learning how to compromise, teamwork, patience. I would really enjoy going on this trip again. When I first went, I left as one person and came back as another. VICTORIA EPPRIGHT I really didn’t want to leave....I wanted it to be longer. During the challenge course, if you weren’t there, they couldn’t make it all the way through....you really mattered. The hike showed the glory of God... how he made everything work together. There was a certain plant that wouldn’t bloom for seven years....after seven years of being just green, it flowered. I would like to do it again, and longer. It was planned really well. Mrs. Zecca and the staff were really good about splitting us into groups. I learned a lot. RON BURRELL There was something for everybody...not just for athletes. On the challenge course, it wasn’t just physical skill, but mental skill needed, and a lot of teamwork. You met a lot of people you did not already know well. Nobody was bored...always something to do. You gained trust in people. On the hike there was a long drop...we looked down the long drop - you had to lie down on rock, hanging over the cliff, so we had to trust the guide. You learn a lot by being outside......plants, animals in their natural habitat. Perseverance was necessary on the course. Trusting God was necessary since at times you felt vulnerable. I would definitely want to do this again....you learn a lot about your friends and the outdoors. ‘‘Commit Commit your yo way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this this: he will make your righteousness shine like th the d dawn, the justice of your cause like the lik noonday sun.’ (Psalm 37:5-6) God holds our futures in his hands. He brings people into our lives like our parents, teachers, and friends, to listen to, so they will help guide us in his truth as we face new situations. Seniors, graduates, we’ve finished high school. We’re ready to move on. I pray that we will commit our lives to the Lord, because in the end, he is the only one worth living for.” Excerpt from Class of 2009 Valedictorian Speech Julie Baratta “Knight Life” is green Knight Life is distributed electronically to conserve valuable resources while reducing DC’s printing and mailing expenses.
