Cévennes - Sur le chemin de RL Stevenson
in the Cévennes on the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail GR®70 2015 Travels “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go; I travel for travel’s sake. And to write about it afterwards […] But the great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of life a little more early, to get down off this feather bed of civilisation, and to find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints.” Robert Louis Stevenson The Association “Sur le Chemin de R.L. Stevenson” The path pioneered by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1878 links the départements of Haute-Loire, Ardèche, Lozère and Gard, at the crossroads of the Auvergne and Languedoc-Roussillon regions, and offers daily discoveries and surprises. The association “Sur le Chemin de Robert Louis Stevenson” was created in 1994 with the aim of promoting this itinerary and helping the constantly growing number of walkers to plan their trip on the GR®70 from Le Puy-en-Velay to Alès. The Association is a network with a people-centred approach numbering over a hundred tourism professionals known as “Relais Stevenson” from Le-Puy-en-Velay to Alès, who offer accommodation, catering, donkey hire, hiking on horseback, holiday planning, cultural speakers and sites, and transport of people and luggage. They are all located on the Trail or nearby. Their contact details are included in this brochure to help you organize your trip to suit your own requirements. On 22 September 1878, the young Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson left Le-Monastier-sur-Gazeille (Haute-Loire) with his donkey Modestine. Twelve days, two-hundred-and-twenty kilometres and many adventures later, he arrived at Saint-Jeandu-Gard. He had two reasons for that trip: to recover from the return to America of Fanny Osbourne (whom he would eventually marry a few years later), and to discover the land of the Protestant Camisards… His book entitled Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes -largely inspired by his travel diary- was published in 1879, followed a few years later by the famous Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. This book has made it possible to trace his route, which has since become the Stevenson Trail (GR 70 Le Chemin de Stevenson). This marked public hiking trail enables walkers to follow in the footsteps of the Francophile Scottish adventurer. “The merchant asked me for one of my cards; for he said it would be something to talk of in the future this donkey-driving, English amateur vagrant.” Towards responsible tourism Whether you are a long-distance walker or just a short-term visitor, you can play your part in the conservation of these invaluable treasures if you abide by some common sense rules. You can thereby contribute to the protection of the environment, the natural heritage, the local population and its activities, and your fellow-walkers. Your tolerant and eco-friendly attitude will ensure that future generations will find this countryside in the same condition as it was when Stevenson discovered it over a century ago. Tailor-made trip Whether you decide to walk the whole way or only a few stages, make sure you plan your trip well in advance! This brochure aims to give you all the necessary information so that you can plan your trip to suit your wishes, either by organizing it yourself or by using the skills and experience of a professional. You will find a map at the end of this brochure to help you visualize the route, and a list of all logos on the back. The Association has brought together a large number of professionals to meet your expectations. For more information on what they have to offer, feel free to contact them directly. On your own or accompanied, as a group, as a family, on foot, in the company of a donkey, on a mountain bike or on horseback… there are so many different ways to discover the Stevenson Trail! 3 Stevenson in Europe The association “Sur le chemin de Stevenson” is an active member of the European network “In the Footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson”. The network brings together private and public organisations from Scotland, England, Belgium and various parts of France (Forest of Fontainebleau, northern Canals, Cévennes). Its objective is to highlight Stevenson’s works and voyages, and to promote the areas through which the author travelled. Throughout the year, each organisation belonging to the network arranges activities in its area on the theme of Stevenson, both for a wide local public and visitors: hikes on foot or with a donkey, trips by canoe or bike; cultural and heritage visits; contemporary art exhibitions; projections; educational activities and workshops, and more. Several times a year, the network members meet to keep each other informed about their respective activities and to reflect on ways in which their areas might be further enhanced using the fact that Stevenson travelled through them. The network is a candidate for the label “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe”, which it hopes to obtain in 2015. More info at rlstevenson-europe.org/en/ Hiking Trips with Donkeys If you are travelling with a donkey, your furry friend will “try” you, even though it will be better trained than Modestine. A donkey can be obedient but is above all an intelligent creature who will adapt to whoever is leading it. This is why children should only lead with the help of an adult at first. A donkey is then the ideal companion: gentle and friendly, it soon becomes the central character of the party, sometimes trying to share your picnic or occasionally stopping to wait for a walker who has been left behind. Enjoy your walk but keep this in mind: by travelling with a donkey you are taking a risk – that of not being able to do without it in the future! 5 Donkey hire Rando-Âne* Gaëlle Bruchet La Coste, route du Monastier 43700 Arsac-en-Velay Tel: 04 71 03 99 32 06 86 81 73 19 gaelle.bruchet@ orange.fr www.rando-ane.fr Chik’Ânes Sylvie Berthet Souteyros 43550 Saint-Front Tel: 04 63 89 00 98 06 08 77 96 93 [email protected] www.chikanes.com Anne Goubert* Gentiâne* Masméjean, 07590 St-Étienne-deLugdarès Tel: 04 66 46 29 64 06 89 56 94 70 Christian Brochier Castagnols 48220 Vialas Tel/Fax: 04 66 41 04 16 06 84 26 30 58 [email protected] www.rafting-canyon. com gentiane@ ane-et-randonnee.fr www. ane-et-randonnee.fr Le Mas des Ânes* Marie-Ange Benoit Route de St-Étiennede-Lugdarès 48250 Luc Tel: 06 61 81 66 69 06 75 68 35 42 lemasdesanes@gmail. com www.lesamisdesanes. com Onagre Sophie Marie et Tony Osorio Bousségures 48110 Saint-Martinde-Lansuscle Tel: 06 79 23 46 37 06 45 90 06 45 asso-onagre@ wanadoo.fr www.assoonagre. wordpress.com Âne Azimut* Christophe Galland 23 rue Via Croze 43150 Le Monastiersur-Gazeille Tel: 04 71 08 30 07 06 60 47 17 02 christophegalland@ sfr.fr www.aneazimut.com : Members of the national association of walking donkey owners. * Accompanied hikes possible. La Fédération Française de Randonnée In 1993, the main French walkers association Fédération Française de Randonnée (FFRandonnée) signposted the Stevenson Trail, thus creating the GR® 70 between Le-Monastiersur-Gazeille and Saint-Jean-du-Gard. To facilitate access to this historic path, it has now been extended from Le Puy to Alès. Marking is carried out by volunteers from the local committees of Haute-Loire, Lozère, Ardèche and Gard. Finally, the FFR co-publishes with Chamina Edition the GR®70 guide book, an invaluable help for walkers together with the relevant IGN 1/25th maps. Before beginning your walk, remember to plan your return journey taking into account existing services. Over the past few years, this pest has established itself all over France, and especially in hikers’ accommodation. Bedbugs feed on human blood, particularly at night. Their bites can at times be very itchy. Bedbugs get around by lodging in hikers’ sleeping bags and duvets, and moving from accommodation to accommodation along hiking routes. Silence is a bedbug’s best friend. Not talking about it allows it to proliferate. That is why information circulates freely inside the Stevenson network. Accommodation providers belonging to the network are informed and asked to carry out regular checks and preventative treatments in their facilities. Note that the presence of bedbugs in an establishment is not in any way a consequence of bad hygiene. Hikers have their part to play in controlling this plague by following some basic rules: - Check the inside of your duvet or sleeping bag every day before packing it, and regularly and closely examine the contents of your rucksack - Preventatively treat your duvet, luggage and personal effects (inside and outside) - If you have been bitten or suspect that there are bedbugs in your accommodation, tell the owner - Carefully follow the instructions given by each accommodation provider - When reserving accommodation, do not hesitate to ask the owners whether they preventatively treat their bedrooms, and if so, how. “As the day goes on, the traveller moves from the one extreme towards the other. He becomes more and more incorporated with the material landscape, and the open-air drunkenness grows upon him with great strides, until he posts along the road, and sees everything about him, as in a cheerful dream.” Virginibus Puerisque “On Walking Tours” 53 47 Notes ½ P: Half board N: Room only R: Meal PtD: Breakfast PtD*: Breakfast available before 8 a.m. Pr: Packed lunch Pl: Vacancies All prices are subject to change and do not always include the compulsory taxe de séjour Half-board: minimum on the basis of two people sharing Bed-&-Breakfast or Room only: price per room on the basis of two people sharing Single rate: check directly with accommodation provider C: Included HL: Leisure homes (chalets, mobile homes, caravans, yurts, tepees, ridge tents and other tents, etc.) Cash point Shopping for food possible in the village (grocer’s shop, baker’s or butcher’s) Associated cultural sites near by Tourist Office Facilities for disabled visitors Free access to cooking facilities (or not) Snacks available on request Long-term parking Wifi access Donkeys welcome Dogs welcome Debit/credit cards accepted Chèques Vacances welcome Gîtes de Francecertified gîtes Gîte d’étape Gîte d’étape communal Chambres d’hôtes Tables d’hôtes Aire naturelle de camping PréVert Certified campsite Tourisme et handicap Facilities for the disabled Logis de Francecertified hotels Qualité tourisme certified establishments Rando accueil certified establishment specialising in outdoor activities Restaurateurs de France certified restaurants Establishments which have signed the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism REF-197 Agir pour un tourisme responsable Working towards sustainable tourism www.tourisme-responsable.org Vers un Tourisme Responsable Clévacances certified gîtes Bienvenue à la ferme Farm accommodation Demeures de Lozère certified hotels Tables et auberges de France certified restaurants Maître Restaurateur Chef awarded Maître-Restaurateur status Agriculture biologique Organic farming Militant du Goût Certified establishment highlighting terroir products Respirando A range of high-quality outdoors activities Fleurs de Soleil certified chambres d’hôtes Musée de France Nationally accredited museum Tables gourmandes de Lozère certified restaurants Monument historique Historical monument Auberges de village Village inn Auberge de Pays d’Auvergne Qualité Sud de France A label awarded by the Region to a variety of Languedoc- Roussillon products VVF Villages Holiday village Clé verte eco-friendly establishment Déficient auditif Facilities for the hearingimpaired Déficient visuel Facilities for the visually impaired Meets ISO 9001 - international standard of qualitymanagement systems Centre de tourisme équestre Certified riding stables Accueil paysan Farm accommodation Qualit’Equidés Certified horse and donkey farm Hôtellerie familiale Family-run hotel Prix de l’innovation Lozère tourisme Lozère Tourisme Innovation Prize Hostel with basic equipment.
