The Iowa Nutrient Planner
Seminars
Steve Brinkman, nutrient management specialist,
NRCS-Iowa
12:45 PM - 1:30 PM
Hy-Vee Hall, Lower Level - Room 2
The goal of this session is to
discuss the Iowa Nutrient
Planner, software to assist
producers in nutrient management. What can this software
do? How can I get the
software? What nutrient
planning purposes can this
be used for, i.e., DNR,
NRCS, CNMPs? Steve will
address these specific
questions in this session.
Evaluation of the accuracy of farm reported
data used to make health decisions for the
breeding herd and grow-finish production
Dr. Ken Stalder, associate
professor of animal science and
extension swine specialist,
Iowa State University
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Hy-Vee Hall, Lower Level - Room 4
The seminar will utilize data from
both grow-finish females and
breeding-herd females that are
typically used to make health and
production decisions, including culling. All too frequently,
decisions to modify a sow system or a grow-finish population
are based on field-collected data and can lead to incorrect
management decisions.

Iowa Environmental Regulations Update
Eldon McAfee, attorney, Beving, Swanson and
Forrest, IPPA legal counsel
Seminars
1:45 PM - 2:45 PM
Hy-Vee Hall, Lower Level - Room 3
Protecting the environment is the goal of all pork producers. To help achieve that goal, Eldon will cover
regulations and recommended practices from manure
management plans to construction and expansion.
Particular attention will be given to new DNR rules, including “director discretion” and the phosphorus index for
MMP annual updates. To better help producers achieve
compliance, Eldon will highlight “gray areas” in the regulations and DNR interpretations.
“Practical Solutions For Your Toughest
Employee Management Problems”
Don Tyler, Tyler & Associates
2:45 PM - 3:45 PM
Hy-Vee Hall, Lower Level - Room 5
For many employers and managers, employee issues
cause them more frustrations than the day-to-day
production challenges. This seminar will provide
specific, practical solutions - not “textbook answers”- to
some of the more difficult challenges such as motivation, conflict resolution, accountability, discipline, etc.
After a brief review, participants will have ample time to
ask specific questions - anonymously if they prefer - on
their particular situation.

Biosecurity Basics for Livestock
Producers Conference
February 16, 26, 27 • March 9, 16
Come and learn about the importance of
biosecurity on your livestock operation
Topics & Speakers:
Biosecurity at the Producer Level
Dr. Patrick Webb, DVM, National Pork Board
Incident Command and an
Animal Disease Disaster
Bruce Spence, Training with Toys
Attend a Biosecurity Meeting
Why is this important?
n the state of Iowa, the livestock industry
is a multi billion dollar industry. The beef
and pork industry collectively provide over
100,000 jobs and a total economic activity of
over $17 billion. The thought of losing this
industry to an agroterrorism event should
provide enough incentive for every producer
across the state to implement a biosecurity
plan on their operation.
I
What am I to expect from the meetings?
• Come and learn about the importance of biosecurity on your
livestock operation
• Hands-on activities using a table top community setup
• Learn what would happen locally in the event of an
outbreak of a highly contagious animal disease, such as
Foot and Mouth Disease
34
IPP/JANUARY 2007
An outbreak of foot-andmouth disease, which
affects both cattle and
swine, would represent
about $65 billion worth
of potential lost value
to U.S. producers…the
fact that a single determined individual or
small group could bring
all U.S. beef or pork
exports to a halt, underscores the need for
increased defense
against this threat.
There is no cost to attend the

now contain a unique tracer system
consisting of iron micro-particles
colored with a codified food dye. By
incorporating the tracer into Mecadox

rapid analysis with simple equipment
can be carried out, to provide instantaneous qualitative and quantitative
analysis. Micro tracers provide an easy
