We hope you have had a wonderful holiday season! 2012 was an awesome year for Common Ground Outdoor Adventures CGOA. There were many incredible adventures such as, rafting with - Staff & Board the backdrop of the Teton Samantha Macfarlane Mountain Range, horseback riding Executive Director with Beaver Creek Lodge, Dog sledding near Jackson Hole and Bryce Patten Fishing in Southern Utah just to Program Director name a few. Peace to you, Common Ground staff CGOA Staff Update Spencer Munyan 2012-13 Social Work Intern In September we welcomed Spencer to the CGOA team. Spencer comes to us from the USU Social Work Program and will be interning with us one more semester. He has been a great asset as he is always fun to be around and is experienced in out‐ door recreation. Spencer loves anything to do with being outside and eating food (particularly breakfast). If he had it his way (someday he will), he would get paid to help people im‐ prove their lives while enjoying the outdoors. Also, he loves his wife Maren and is excited to be a dad (they are having a daughter in April. 2013 Ski Staff and Winter AmeriCorps Interns Come in and meet our winter staff for 2013! Carl Yeip, Josh Hancey, Cody Fullmer, and Mike Wehmeyer will be help‐ ing us navigate the powder this year up at Beaver Mountain as our ski instructors. Jessie O'Brien and Shelby Ensign will be helping us out in the office and with our daily activities and trips. Come learn about the people we serve, the activities we provide, and the adaptive equipment and techniques we employ to make our outdoor activities accessible to people of all abilities! We will have you fill out the necessary paperwork at this orienta‐ tion. Please bring emergency contact and insurance information. Volunteer opportunities are available to help with activities and trips, helping around the office, helping to maintain our grounds, equipment and more! Cost $3 Winter Trails Day: Come join Common Ground and the Forrest Service to see what winter is all about! Clinic Descriptions January ‐ Cross Country Ski Clinic ‐ Come enjoy the scenery as we learn how to cross country ski near the base of Beaver Mountain. Lunch will be served! Cost is $15.This includes transportation in the valley, in‐ struction, adaptive equipment, warm gear to use if needed and lunch. February ‐ Ice Fishing Clinic ‐ Make the catch of the day! We will be ice fishing at Northern Utah's fishing "Hotspots" ‐ Hyrum Dam and Mantua. Cost $15. This includes transportation in the valley, instruc‐ tion, fishing supplies, warm gear to use if needed and treats at the event. March ‐ Snowshoeing Clinic ‐ Join CGOA and enjoy the beautiful winter wonderland in Cache Valley. We will be hitting all different trails around the valley this winter. Come enjoy the scenery as we learn how to snowshoe on various local trails. Cost is $15 for clinic (3 Weeks). This includes transportation in the valley, instruction, adaptive equipment, warm gear to use if needed and treats at the activity. Walkers and sit skis are available. Signing up for a Common Ground activity is easy! Just call us at least one day in advance and let us know that you plan to attend. For all you teachers out there, we can come do activities with your classroom. We have a wide variety of adaptive cycles that we can bring to your class to try out. In the warmer months we can try canoeing at a local river or lake. In the winter time we have snowshoes and cross‐country skis for your students to try out. Common Ground also has an adaptive alpine ski program. We can customize a ski day at Beaver Mountain or any resort within the region, we can also provide some transportation and group rates. All transportation, for participants who live within Cache Valley, is provided at no cost to the par‐ ticipant. If you are participating from outside of Cache Valley, on an activity or trip, a transporta‐ tion fee of $10 round trip is required. Love UT Give UT March 22, 2013 On March 22, 2013 The Community Foundation of Utah will lead a state wide effort to bring together Utahans for 24‐ hours of unprecedented giving. It is one extraordinary day to support the organizations that make Utah special. This type of virtual fundraising event has been successful in other states, raising tens of millions of dollars for charities in a fun, collaborative and engaging way, and bringing new donors to thousands of organizations. Feb.17th ‐ Sun. Feb. 19th Come enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Teton and Gros Ventre mountain ranges as we head to the Jackson Hole area for a weekend of snowshoeing and dog sledding. Come bundled. Even though we will be enjoying the comfort and hospitality of the cabins and staff at the Teton Science School, the weather will be cold. Despite the cold, this is an unforgettable experience that will leave you heart warmed and humbled by the spectacular views and impressive dogs. Mar. 6th ‐ Wed. Mar. 7th Beaver Mountain’s excellent runs and friendly atmosphere make it a popular destination for locals, some say it is one of Utah's best‐kept secrets. Come explore a variety of terrain, perfect for every ability. The yurt is carpeted and heated and provides a warm spot right at the resort for us to get up and head right out to the slopes in the morning. Meals will be provided at the Yurt and at the Lodge. Cost is $150.00 ($100.00 with scholarship). $45 without skiing. 5 Support Common Ground at BANFF The annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World tour is a collection of the best films from the Banff Centre Film Festival held every year in Alberta Canada. They range in content from artistic interpretations of mountain cul‐ ture, environmental documentaries, extreme athletes pushing perceived boundaries, and ordinary people taking on unique challenges. Both nights there will be different films shown. You will not be disappointed.
