Medline’s Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program
It is estimated that 2.5 million patients are treated each year in U.S. acute-care facilities for pressure ulcers.2
Incidence rates vary by clinical settings, ranging from 0.4 percent to 38 percent in acute care and 2.2 percent
to 23.9 percent in long-term care.2,3 In FY2007, there were 257,412 reported cases of Medicare patients
with pressure ulcers as a secondary diagnosis.4 The additional average charge for the hospital stay (per case)
was $43,180. It is estimated that 60,000 patients die each year as a result of pressure ulcer complications.4
The main challenges to having an effective pressure ulcer prevention program are lack of resources, lack of
staff education, behavioral challenges and lack of patient and family education. Medline’s comprehensive
Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program offers solutions to these challenges and promotes the reduction of
pressure ulcers with clinical and educational resources, assessment tools and a product line designed
to work along with your existing program.
Education and training
The Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program includes self-paced workbooks for nurses and nursing assistants plus
an instructor’s manual to assist the course administrator. There are also pamphlets to educate patients and their
families and a rewards program to acknowledge participants who successfully complete the program. You’ll also
receive an administrative brochure and cost tracker CD to determine pressure ulcer prevalence and incidence
and compare the cost of implementing a pressure ulcer prevention program versus treating a pressure ulcer.

The product bundle
Ultrasorbs® AP drypad
ONE PAD for healthy skin. The innovative backsheet on Ultrasorbs AP
allows air to flow through the pad while still acting as a barrier to moisture.
The result is exceptional skin dryness and comfort.
ONE PAD for lower cost. Ultrasorbs AP are so strong and absorbent that
they eliminate the need for multiple pads. They also reduce the need for draw
sheets, linens or reusable underpads. The result is a dramatically lower cost.
ONE PAD for easier care. Ultrasorbs AP can be used on both standard beds
and air support therapy beds.
Restore® adult briefs
The Restore/Remedy brief is breathable for skin health and contains Remedy
Skin Repair Cream in its core to enhance moisture management.
Medline Remedy® products
The Remedy family of products cleanses with phospholipids rather than with
soaps or surfactants to help restore the natural oils on the skin. Remedy
products also nourish the skin with Olivamine® and natural oils and feature
blends of sophisticated silicones to create long-lasting, semi-occlusive
barriers. All products are easy to apply and remove.

These powered, self-adjusting mattresses with multiple therapy settings

Identification System
No two individuals experience incontinence in exactly the same way – so why should they all use the same
incontinence management product?
Guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require individualized care plans
for each incontinent resident. Concerns about dignity and privacy mean these plans need to be discreet.
Shown below is an example of an easy, discreet system for selecting and distributing appropriate incontinence
management products. The system uses a variety of stickers to match products to residents. These stickers
can be placed outside the door to the resident’s room, inside the room or in a closet. A legend indicating
the product each sticker represents can be kept at the nursing station.
In this system, a sticker with a blue fish on it designates a large-sized brief. All employees – delivery staff,
nurses and nursing assistants – should be able to identify the blue fish and know which product it represents.
Step-by-step instructions for use
The product identification system (below) is designed to promote product selection,
fit and comfort.
Step 1: Identify resident’s continence categories by using MDS 2.0 definition of
continence self-control (section H.1)
Step 2: Assess resident’s status regarding mobility, contractures, chronic diarrhea,
combative behavior and size
Step 3: Identify the proper product type using the decision tree for disposable
incontinence products
Step 4: Measure the resident and identify proper size using the sizing
guide or matrix
Step 5: Select sticker with symbol representing product and size
Step 6: Place sticker next to resident’s nametag or designated location
Step 7: Instruct staff to use proper product and size for each resident
