Mr. Polezhayev has given many performances in the NY metropolitan area. Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi Perform Klezmer Music Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi will perform klezmer music obtained from Strom’s many ethnographic treks throughout Eastern Europe. Hot Pstromi will play with an authentic feel spiced with exhilarating improvisation. Richard Crystal Book Signing - A Reign Supreme Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m. Meet Richard “Rip” Crystal, author, producer and jazz singer, as he talks about growing up in Long Beach and the importance the Library played in his upbringing as well as his new book, A Reign Supreme. Rip was born into a show business family. His father Jack, produced jazz concerts and managed the Commodore Music Shop in Manhattan. His mother, Helen, was an amateur actress and encouraged her three sons to perform is school plays. After moving to LA in 1975, his show business career took off with the creating of ABC’s “Life’s Most Embarrassing Moments”. He also produced “The Planet’s Funniest Animals” for the Animal Planet. Autographed copies of his book will be available through Friends of the Library. Intergeneration Discussion Group Friday, October 25 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Dancing to the Flute by Manisha Amin. This fall the group, led by outreach librarian Joan Yonish, will tackle the plight and challenges of abandoned children who grew up to make a positive impact on society. Veterans’ Healthcare Enrollment Event - What’s New in VA Healthcare? Wednesday, October 23 at 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Find out about new programs which you might be eligible for: MyHealtheVet, Caregiver Support Program and DAV transportation. The Northport Outreach Team will be on hand to review eligibility and assist with enrollment for health care at the main Northport facility and at nearby clinics at East Meadow and Valley Stream. The Northport VA Medical Center Mobile Unit will be parked outside the Library for Hypertension screening, and ID cards, and provide first-time physical exams for new enrollees. Lost Treasures: The Wooden Synagogues of Eastern Europe Thursday, November 7 at 2:00 p.m. This PowerPoint presentation by Bill Farran combines history and art. Bill made the wooden lino-cuts of synagogues of Eastern Europe built between 16301800, all destroyed during the Holocaust. They existed in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and the Ukraine. Bill Farran is an artist and historian. October 2013 Since 1928 Programs & Events Reflections - A Tribute Guide To The Long Beach Benches Wednesday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. Jeff Singer will be reading from his recently published book, Reflections - A Tribute Guide To The Long Beach Benches. The Guide is a compilation of 150 stories that memorialize loved ones with a 250 word story of what made this person so unique and special. Friends of the Library will assist with selling the books. Life Lessons Through Literature Teach Your Kids to Be Bucket Fillers! Monday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. We have invited Erika Stroh, Educator/Parent Coach to talk about the book Growing Up with a Bucket Full of Happiness: Three Rules for a Happier Life, by Carol McCloud. Parents & caregivers are responsible for helping to fill a child’s bucket, an imaginary place where they hold good thoughts & feelings about themselves. Moms & Dads must learn to model behavior that sets a positive example for teaching their child how to love & care for themselves as well as show compassion & kindness toward others. Food In Art Masterpieces from the Renaissance to the Present Wednesday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. Through the ages food has been used by artists in many ways. In this presentation, you will see how Chagall depicted food in his work; how Manet shocked the world and represented class distinctions. Witness celebrations as shown by Brueghel, and a brilliant still life by Frida Kahlo. You will have much food for thought while you learn about Expressionism and Pop Art. The Jewish Wedding – A History of the Ketubah (Jewish Marriage Contract) Wednesday, November 6 at 2:00 p.m. This program will explain the art, history, tradition and soul of the Jewish wedding. The common elements of the ceremony will be presented utilizing actual ketubot. Our speaker, Joan Katz, will display the art work or ketubah artists and discuss the content and decoration (illumination) of each piece with its magnificent array of colors, designs and their religious significance. Actual ketubot from plain to highly decorative and from our grandparents’ day to contemporary will be displayed. Tai Chi Chuan with Elizabeth Connors Thursdays, Nov. 7, 14, 21 at 7:30 p.m. Come and experience the ancient Chinese exercise of movements beautifully linked together in a series of rhythmic steps designed to promote good health and prevent illness. Tai Chi Chuan means “supreme ultimate method”. This exalted title was bestowed upon this ancient Kung Fu system because of its unique ability to combine the external martial arts exercise with the internal healing energies practiced by the people of China for thousands of years. Farewell Dorothy Parker Tuesday, October 22 at 2:00 p.m. Author Ellen Meister will present a stimulating discussion about Dorothy Parker, arguably the greatest American wit of the 20th century, and will address what it was like to bring the acerbic icon back to life as a character in her latest novel, Farewell, Dorothy Parker. Ellen will also talk about the creative process, will end with a lively Q&A. Ellen Meister is the author of four novels, including Farewell, Dorothy Parker (Putnam 2013) and The Other Life (Putnam 2011). She currently teaches creative writing at Hofstra University Continuing Education. Little Shop of Wonders 17 min People came from all over to The Little Shop of Wonders to view their collections, as well as to seek their advice about gemstones and healing.
