BRING ON THE
SUMMER FUN
Hello Dr. P. Phillips Y Members,
Summer has arrived, and there are so many reasons to be excited about what the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA
has to offer its members and guests. First and foremost, summer means “fun” for kids. And at the Y,
we believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve.
That’s why, through the Dr. P. Phillips Y, thousands of youth today are cultivating the values, skills
and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
Our child care, education and leadership, athletic and camp programs give kids safe, nurturing environments that help them realize who they
are and what they can achieve. This summer, we have several exciting camps lined up for kids, including Dance Camp, Chef Camp, Art Camp,
Basketball Camp, Swim & Fit Camp, and Soccer Camp. All of our camps offer a fun and safe environment for children and teens to build
confidence, develop skills and make lasting friendships and memories so they can grow as individuals and leaders.
Through the YMCA of Central Florida Swim Academy, we are also offering youth swim lessons for children ages 3 years and older. Our youth
swim program is designed to focus on repetition and practice to create a student-centered environment with well-trained instructors. The
program comprises five main components: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports, and games and rescue. Each
skill level builds upon the preceding levels, covering all strokes, diving and safety fundamentals.
Hey adults, kids aren’t the only ones who will be having fun at the Dr. P. Phillips Y this summer! As many of you are already well aware, in
order to strengthen the foundation of the local community, the Dr. P. Phillips Y is expanding its facilities, services and programming so that
everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We recently completed Phase Two of our
Mission Expansion, and we are thrilled to be able to offer some additional features, including two indoor racquetball courts for racquetball
and handball; new spin room with new bikes, the latest technology and more space; new group exercise studios with more options for
yoga, strength, Zumba, cardio, stretch and balance classes; expanded wellness floor and redesigned health zones; and Orlando Health
rehabilitation support areas and private consultation rooms.
As a member, you will be able to enjoy these added features and create a personalized pathway toward prevention and wellness. The
additional programming accompanying expansion will enhance every encounter you
have, every connection you make and every engagement you participate in while at
the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA.
From everyone at the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA, we wish you a fun and healthy summer!
Sincerely,
Ryan A. Smith
Executive Director
Dr. P. Phillips YMCA

SAFE START — SAVING LIVES ONE CHILD AT A TIME
The statistics are alarming ... Drowning is
the number one cause of accidental death for
children under the age of 4, and it’s also the most
preventable. Thankfully, there is a program that
teaches water survival techniques to children as
young as 6 months old.
Safe Start-certified instructors teach infants and
toddlers important water survival skills like floating,
breathing, resting and swimming to the wall. They
can train your child to save themselves in just six
weeks. Sessions are held five days a week for just
10 minutes a day.
Safe Start is a collaborative effort of Dr. Phillips
Charities, Infant Swimming Resource and the YMCA
of Central Florida. Because of the generosity of our
partners and donors, scholarships are available for
families who would like to participate in Safe Start but do not have the means to do so.
For more informationon Safe Start and to schedule an appointment, contact us at [email protected] or 407.599.0113.

DR. PHILLIPS YMCA YOUTH SPORTS
•
The YMCA utilizes seven sports principles: everyone plays, safety first, fair
play, positive competition, family involvement, sports for all and sports for
fun!
•
All of our coaches are dedicated volunteers, not paid employees.
•
We are always looking for new coaches to volunteer their time.
•
Coaching is only a two-hour-a-week commitment — one practice during the
week and one game on either a Friday or Saturday.
•
While it’s only a two-hour-a-week commitment, the impact on the children’s
future is immeasurable.
•
We hold a mandatory coaches meeting before every season to go over rules
and regulations as well as some tips and tricks to coaching to make sure that even if you’re a brand new coach, you will go into
the season ready to go.
•
Teams are based off of practice days, as determined by the availability of our coaches.
•
Practices are held once a week for no longer than one hour. Practices are the same day/time throughout the season.
•
We try our best to accommodate all requests, but all requests aren’t guaranteed and if possible are granted on a first-come, firstserved basis.
•
Games will be held on either Friday nights, Saturday mornings, and may possibly include one weeknight game.
•
Jerseys will be provided by the YMCA for every sport. If registering during the regular registration period, jerseys will arrive on or
before your first game. Players will need to provide shorts, athletic shoes, and any other necessary equipment themselves.
•
Full Rulebooks and more information can be found on DPYSPORTS.COM.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
YOUTH AND TEENS
Here at the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA, we are dedicated to the growth and
development of our teens. By offering multiple teen leadership and
development opportunities, we are hopeful that we can make every
teen healthier and stronger.
The Teen Programs are a great opportunity for our teens to build
friendships, develop leadership skills and create memories that will
last a lifetime. We have an exciting schedule of events for our teens
this year. Some of the programming includes: Volunteer Leadership
Opportunities, Service Learning Projects and Social Events.
We offer three different program options for teens at the Dr. P.
Phillips YMCA:
Leaders Club is a group of teen trained volunteers who have the
ability and a desire to help and teach others. Each year the teens
get to attend Blue Ridge Leaders School where the goal is to develop
teens to be leaders in all aspects of YMCA physical education.
Leaders Club meets every Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Youth in Government is a youth-led model government program
that gives delegates the opportunity to speak out and debate
political, economic and social issues in Florida. Dr. Phillips meetings
are on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. at Dr. Phillips High School.
THE CELL gathers every Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. and
allows teens to get together without the stress of school and
other obligations to talk about what matters most to them. It also

HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAMS
YMCA DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
If you’re at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA Diabetes
Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain a healthy
lifestyle that will help you reduce your chance of developing the
disease.
In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help facilitate
a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating,
physical activity and other behavior changes over the course
of 16 one-hour sessions. After the initial 16 core sessions,
participants meet monthly for added support to help them
maintain their progress.
The program goals include reducing body weight by 7 percent and
increasing physical activity to 150 minutes per week.
Take our Diabetes Quiz in the back of this Program Guide to
see if you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. For more
information on how to participate in the program and eligibility,

MEMBER STORY
In 2014, after relocating from Miami Beach to Central Florida with my two girls, I decided it was time
for a change in my life. I was going through a divorce and feeling terrible about my health, high stress,
hypertension, and obesity (weighing 320 pounds). I joined the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA and met with a
personal trainer who helped me come up with a program tailored just for me. This has allowed me to
reach my goals without limitations. My goal is to continue to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Working with the personal trainer has helped me not only with a routine but also with advice on how to
continue adjusting my eating habits. I’m no longer afraid to try different types of workouts. I’ve tried
Latin Cardio, Zumba, Body Ballet, Yoga, Piloxing, Circuit training, TRX and more. The funny thing was that
I actually enjoyed every time I tried something new. No matter how challenging the group class was, I was
able to follow at my own pace, and now I’m able to do most of the classes the entire time.
I was able to meet with the trainer a couple of times through The Coach Approach program, and each time my weight, body fat, and
stress levels went down while my healthy lifestyle habits got progressively better. Today I weigh 275 pounds, 45 pounds less, and feel
stronger. I feel like I was given a new life and an opportunity to be and feel better. I’m a new women on a mission with a purpose and
a goal. I no longer cry because of my problems or tribulations but continue to workout while I thank God for this new opportunity, the
Dr. P. Phillips YMCA and the professional staff who are helping me along the way.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for making a difference in my life. I’m committed to continue this journey because of you.

THE DR. PHILLIPS STORY
A Charitable Benefactor
Dr. Philip Phillips and the charities that carry his name have a rich history in Central Florida
and continue to have a great impact on the lives of the area’s residents. Born on January
27, 1874, in Memphis, Tennessee, Phillips came to Florida in 1894, where he purchased
his first orange grove in Satsuma. One of the most devastating freezes in Florida’s history
occurred in the following year, forcing the young doctor back home to Tennessee. He
returned to Florida in 1897, this time moving further south to Central Florida. This was
the beginning of a citrus empire spanning several counties, with more than 5,000 acres of
citrus groves and two packing houses.
Dr. Phillips and his wife, Della, settled in Orlando where
they raised their family and established their reputation
for philanthropy. The Phillips family’s generosity and keen
passion for helping people in the community led to the establishment of The Dr.
P. Phillips Foundation in 1953 to support charitable needs in the Central Florida
area. The family felt that it was important to support programs that would correct
the origins or causes of a problem, thus leading to the Foundation’s motto “to help
others help themselves.”
Dr. Philip Phillips passed away on April 18, 1959. Engraved on his marble
tombstone are the words: “Under His Hand the Wilderness Bore Fruit.”
His wife, Della, passed away in 1968, and Howard Phillips, their son and
remaining sole stockholder of the Phillips’ companies, continued the family
legacy of philanthropy through The Dr. P. Phillips Foundation and Dr.
Phillips, Inc. Upon his death in 1979, Howard Phillips, the sole heir of Dr.
Phillips, left all of the Phillips family holdings to be used in charitable ways.
Perpetuating a Legacy of Giving
People invest in the Y mission because we are passionate
about what we do and understand the work it requires
to realize our goals. Dr. Phillips Charities shares this
sense of passion and has been the YMCA of Central
Florida’s leading supporter over the years. In fact, the
Dr. P. Phillips YMCA became a reality in 1985 when the
Dr. Phillips Foundation recognized that the Dr. Phillips
community needed a place for area residents to socialize
and participate in recreational activities together.
The Foundation approached the YMCA, which agreed
to establish the facility, and leased the current site to
the Y for $1 per year and provided financial support to
construct the initial building. Over the years, with the
support of Dr. Phillips Charities, our Y has continued to grow and evolve into the family center it is today.
Using Dr. Phillips’ work as an example, we know that lasting personal and social change
comes about when we all work together. That’s why, at the Dr. Phillips Y, strengthening
community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure
that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn,
grow and thrive.
