HOMAS JEFFERSON is best remembered as the author
of the Declaration of Independence. The idea that “all men are created equal” with a
right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” established the foundations of selfgovernment and personal liberty in America. Jefferson’s eloquent words of 1776 continue to inspire
people of all ages around the world today. Today, Jefferson’s home remains a touchstone for all
who seek to explore the enduring meaning of what it means to be an American and a citizen of the
world. Since 1923, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has been dedicated to preserving Monticello, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site, and sharing Jefferson’s home and ideas with the world.

EDUCATION
his January, inspired by Jefferson’s legacy and in service to our
twofold mission of preservation and education, Monticello kicked
off the year with educational programming for Virginia public
school students through the My Monticello exhibition and the Daily Life at
Monticello program for the Richmond City Public Schools.
My Monticello included artwork from over 300 third-grade students from
Charlottesville City public schools who visited Monticello to learn about
Thomas Jefferson’s love of gadgets and design. The exhibition program,
now in its ninth year, is supported by the Wells Fargo Foundation and the
Hunter Smith Family Foundation.
The Daily Life at Monticello program brings 1,800 fourth graders from all
28 Richmond City Public Schools to Monticello for a free four-hour lesson
that explores the lives of Thomas Jefferson, his family and Monticello’s
free and enslaved plantation community through objects that illustrate
their stories. As a participating fourth-grade teacher from Westover Hills
Elementary explained, “Today brought our curriculum to life and made a
historical figure real beyond Internet capabilities.” Support over the years
for the Daily Life at Monticello program for the Richmond City Public
Schools has come from Dr. and Mrs. Steven E. Epstein, the Hunter Smith
Family Foundation, Virginia H. Spratley Charitable Fund of The Community
Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia, Verizon Foundation,

s Thomas Jefferson wrote to his daughter Martha Jefferson
Randolph, “I never before knew the full value of trees ... What
would I not give that the trees planted nearest round the house at
Monticello were full grown.”
Thanks to the combined efforts of the Boy Scouts, Charlottesville Area
Mountain Bike Club and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, a new trail
connection planted with a diverse collection of trees has recently been
opened along the Saunders-Monticello Trail. The new Eagle Scout
Trail connects the Hartman-Orchard Trail with the Saunders-Monticello
Trail. Approximately one mile long, the Eagle Scout Trail features eight
switchbacks that gently bisect the steep hillsides. Along the new trail
visitors can see ferns, rhododendrons and hardwoods, as well as mountain
views in the winter.
Fifteen-year-old Graham Haynie, a Life Scout with local troop 37, started
the Eagle Scout Trail for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation as a step
toward his Eagle Scout badge.

harlottesville’s historic Keswick Hall and the Thomas Jefferson
Foundation are pleased to announce a new partnership. Starting
this year, Keswick Hall will donate $2 from each hotel stay as an
unrestricted gift to the Monticello Annual Fund. Keswick Hall is a resort and
48-room mansion nestled on a 600-acre estate near Monticello. Keswick
Hall offers breathtaking mountain views and a wide variety of amenities,
including tennis, swimming, fitness, archery, garden and history tours, fly
fishing, hot air ballooning, regionally inspired dining and a new Pete Dye
golf course, which will open in late summer 2014.
“Monticello is grateful for this dedicated support from one of our esteemed
neighbors,” said Development Director Joshua Scott. “These ongoing
contributions will enable the Foundation to advance our dual mission of
preservation and education.”
