Renovating the past, deepening the present
Eighty four years ago, businessman J.J. Flynn opened his “people’s theater.”
I’m honored to continue his founding vision of providing quality entertainment
to this community.
This summer we finished the third phase of planned building
improvements. Gentlemen will notice expanded downstairs
bathroom facilities; artists in our black-box FlynnSpace
dressing room can now shower; and you’ve probably already
used the newly-situated box office. This completes three years
of renovations that include an enclosed loading dock (warmth),
new theater seats (comfort), ADA adaptations (hearing assist and
companion seating), lobby enhancements (electronic signage),
and exterior architectural lighting (beauty). All told, 274 individuals,
corporations, foundations, and government agencies invested
$2.3 million into our iconic venue. I’m extremely grateful for
this support, which keeps the Flynn exciting and relevant.
Thodos Dance Chicago brings its beautiful A Light in the Dark
to our Student Matinee Series in February, based on the lives
of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. The Flynn is excited to open
lines of understanding between students and differently-abled
populations, and examine questions around art-making and
disability. Planned residency activities include an onstage
“touch tour” of the sets, props, and costumes for the visually
impaired.
This season, look for interrelated events that examine the
intersection of art and disability. This series is supported by
a major three-year grant from the Surdna Foundation, with
additional support from The Gibney Family Foundation and
Courtney and Victoria Buffum Family Foundation, as well as
generous individuals.
Also in February, Schoolhouse Rock Live!, based on
the Emmy-winning ‘70s Saturday morning cartoon series,
presents an autism-friendly family matinee. The Flynn worked
with the artists in the touring company and the National Autism
Theatre Initiative of Theatre Development Fund to create
a supportive environment for audience members diagnosed
with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensory issues.
Modifications will be made to light and sound, but this
is an inclusive performance to which all audiences
are invited.
In October, jazz pianist Marcus Roberts is in residence for
a week, culminating in two performances with his 12-piece
jazz band: one for students through our Student Matinee Series
and one for the general public. In addition to being a jazz
genius, Roberts, blind since age five, has made extraordinary
breakthroughs in the development of adaptive technology,
enabling blind composers to write complicated musical scores.
Downstairs in FlynnSpace, Mat Fraser, born with a thalidomide
syndrome of shortened limbs, joins wife Julie Atlas Muz in
September with their provocative, adults-only, burlesque spectacle.
This April, Terry Galloway brings her autobiographical onewoman show, You Are My Sunshine, that explores the struggles
and revelations of a person thrust into a new world of sound
because of cochlear implants.

Next summer, in association with the GRACE Gallery in Hardwick,
the Flynn exhibits the work of artist and autism advocate Larry
Bissonnette in our Amy E. Tarrant Gallery. And throughout the
year, the Flynn continues its work with VSA VT and Burlington City
Arts to provide professional development for teachers and teaching
artists’ residencies at the Integrated Arts Academy in Burlington.
A component of this training focuses on Universal Design for
Learning, which is particularly relevant for students with
physical and cognitive disabilities.
None of this is possible without the generosity of you, our
audiences, 2,400 members, educational program participants,
and donors. Of our $6.6 million annual budget, just about
60 percent is earned (and this is high by national standards).
The rest comes from contributions. Even your ticket purchase
for a performance covers only about two-thirds of the cost.
Our business model is a precarious balancing of earned income
and contributions from government, corporations, foundations,
individual, and members that is constantly being recalibrated.

We’ve spent the last three years prioritizing capital improvements
and patron enhancements; we now need to invest more deeply
in artists and the community in order to fully realize the Flynn’s
commitment to the creation of new works, support of artists,

local and visiting artists in various disciplines (theater, music,
and dance) allow them to spend time in the Burlington area,
engaging various communities, and deepening the connection
between artist and audience.

Access to our programs is an essential part of our mission,
and how the Flynn earns its nonprofit status. Working with 55
educational, social, and human service organizations, we provide
over 2,000 discounted vouchers for clients. At our student
matinee performances, nearly 6,000 of the 38,000 kids from 175
schools come free, and approximately $16,000 of scholarships
are awarded annually for our FlynnArts classes. The Burlington
Discover Jazz Festival, produced in association with Burlington
City Arts, also presents over 100 hours of free music.

Your Beautiful Building
Seeing the Flynn today, especially with the latest renovation of new seating,
it’s difficult to remember the condition of the theater when it was purchased
from Merrill Jarvis in 1981. The Flynn is a beautifully-restored modern facility
that serves as a wonderful example of the bygone splendor of large, downtown
movie houses—but it had a much more humble beginning.
At that time, the Flynn was only the auditorium, what is now the
lobby, and part of the box office. Much of the decorative painting
throughout the lobby and hall were painted over, or faded and
damaged by 50 years of water. Large sections of the auditorium
ceiling were bare plaster, the paint having been destroyed in a
flood caused by a burst sprinkler pipe during the initial renovation.
The roofs were prone to leaking; much of the wiring dated to the
1930s, and the 1950s-era seating was in bad condition.
There were no backstage amenities such as dressing rooms.
There was no way to exit stage left and reenter stage right without
running down to the basement, across it, and up again on the
other side. The theater had been used primarily as a movie house,
so what sound and lighting equipment existed was not useful for
staging live performances. The stage rigging system for flying
sets, lights, and curtains was the original hemp with sand bag
counter weights. The existing curtains were frayed and worn.
lighting and sound equipment was purchased, an automated pit
lift was installed that allowed the floor in the orchestra pit to be
located at different levels, and an accessible dressing room built.
The next large capital building project took place in 1999-2000
when the Flynn purchased the building at 145 Main Street, tore
it down, and then rebuilt it. This top-to-bottom renovation and
restoration process took over a year and completely transformed
the Flynn, adding the black box theater FlynnSpace (which was
originally a bowling alley), two dance studios, the Amy E. Tarrant
Gallery, and the Flynn’s administrative offices. The paint had
barely dried when the season opened in September 2000.
The original restoration of the theater was always a two-track
process: dealing with both structural and aesthetic building
concerns, and stage technical issues. In the 1980s the lobby
roof was replaced, new wiring installed, lobby ceilings restored,
seating renovated, and the masonry façade repaired. At that same
time dressing rooms were built, new curtaining installed, new
lighting positions made, a new counterweighted cable rigging
system put in, and a structure built behind the stage to allow
a cross over from stage left to right.
In 2011, the Flynn celebrated its 30th anniversary by undertaking
another major renovation, in three phases. First, the loading
dock was enclosed, providing extra insulation to reduce energy
costs and a wider berth to facilitate large load-ins. In 2012,
phase two was completed thanks to the generosity of the
community and an anonymous million dollar gift. To enhance
the patron experience, the auditorium received brand-new seats
with better foam and seat construction, a quieter and more
reliable seat hinge, and a more durable and comfortable fabric.
The seats are pitched differently, with more legroom and better
sightlines. The mushroom cap vents in the last few rows of
the main floor were replaced with beautiful flat vents by Conant
Custom Brass. The walls in the main theater were painted,
and some acoustical drapes were installed to replace the old
foam panels on the balcony wall facing the stage.
In the ‘90s, the auditorium and stage roofs were replaced, the
marquee rewired, balcony seating redone, air conditioning added
in the hall, and the carpeting replaced with a historic carpet
matching the original pattern and weave. Simultaneously, major
Accessibility was also enhanced by adding additional wheelchair
locations in the back of the hall and a hearing assist loop
throughout the house, so those with assisted hearing devices
with t-switches can have the sound fed directly to their device.

Railings were installed on the east and west walls of the orchestra
at the rear of the house where the rake of the floor is steepest, as
well as on the east and west walls of the balcony and at each of
the balcony’s inner aisles.
The lobby and foyer also received upgrades in the form of lighting
and wall displays, plus HD LCD screens above the theater wall
that allow for information about the evening’s performance and
upcoming performances, but also a view into what’s happening in
the theater during a performance, should patrons need to step out
for a moment.
The exterior of the building was jazzed up with color-changing
LED down-light spots that graze the carved stone pilasters,
enabling us to illuminate the building in many colors depending
on the season and performance.
This past summer,
we finished phase three of the project by expanding
the men’s restroom, adding a shower in FlynnSpace, and
resituating the FlynnTix Box Office to have direct street
presence.
We hope to continue to maintain and improve this beautiful
historic structure for years to come. The great vaudeville and
film house built by J.J. Flynn and his partners 84 years ago
is recognized nationwide for the beautiful preservation of
that original art deco masterpiece; for world-class artistic
programming in theater, dance, and music; and for educational
programs that reach far into the community to advance teaching
and learning for all ages.

An Overview of the Season

This year’s season kicks off with Pink Martini (Wednesday,
September 24), the ultimate sophisticated lounge band (that’s
a compliment!). The group draws from musical traditions
around the world and across genres of pop, jazz, and classical.
On Wednesday, October 1, we celebrate the 40th anniversary
of Los Lobos, whose music is influenced by rock and roll,
Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues, brown-eyed soul, and
traditional music such as cumbia, boleros, and nortenos.
Second City (Thursday, October 2) opened in 1959 to present
a mix of sketch and improv comedy, and became the starting
point for generations of America’s best and brightest comedians,
including Joan Rivers, John Belushi, John Candy, Bill Murray,
Gilda Radner, and Tina Fey. Featuring top global choreographers,
distinctive groundbreaking works, and virtuoso dancers,
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (Saturday, October 18) is one of the
most dynamic, athletic, risk-taking contemporary ballets around.
Wynton Marsalis calls Marcus Roberts (Friday, October 24)
“the genius of modern piano.” Roberts and his 12-piece band,
which includes Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra veterans
alongside some up-and-coming jazz musicians, play an evening
length original composition, Romance, Swing, and the Blues.
R. Buckminster Fuller was quite a guy: architect, designer,
engineer, inventor, linguist, writer, and philosopher. Documentary
filmmaker Sam Green and indie-rock band Yo La Tengo pay
homage to Fuller with a live-performance, multimedia documentary,
The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller (Thursday,
October 30; co-presented by the UVM Lane Series).
Winner of 31 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards
and two Grammys, the Del McCoury Band (Sunday, November
2) was hand-picked by Woody Guthrie’s daughter Nora to set
previously undiscovered lyrics to bluegrass music. The legendary
Martha Graham Dance Company (Friday, November 21)
carries on the legacy of Graham’s focus on expressive movement.
The New York Times says that “Graham’s choreography remains a
true, living American document.” An absolutely astonishing vocal
Emerging choreographer Camille A. Brown (Saturday,
January 17) creates pieces that are high energy, provocative, and
theatrically electrifying. Grease (Friday, January 23) is not only
the word . . . it’s also a fun sing-a-long, so dress up in your favorite
Grease outfit and sing along. Terri Lyne Carrington (Friday,
January 30) was the drummer of choice for 20 years, playing
with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Cassandra
Wilson, and many more. Money Jungle is her tribute to the Duke
Ellington/Charles Mingus/Max Roach album, but it stakes its own
territory, and takes off like a rocket from the first downbeat.
Nice Work If You Can Get It (Monday, February 2) is like a
jukebox filled with George and Ira Gershwin songs: Let’s Call
the Whole Thing Off, ‘S Wonderful, I’ve Got a Crush on You,
Someone To Watch Over Me, and of course, the title tune. The
plot holding the songs together is great, frothy, screwball fun. The
family matinee of Schoolhouse Rock Live! (Sunday, February
15) brings back all your old favorites, like 3 Is a Magic Number,
Conjunction Junction and How a Bill Becomes a Law. This
performance is sensory-friendly for people with autism, which
means that the house lights are a little brighter and the rules a bit
relaxed. Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy (Wednesday,
Feburary 18) are two great Cape Breton fiddlers who happen to
be married. Along with the music and step-dancing, you’ll hear
stories about Cape Breton, and catch glimpses of their family
life (and even some family members). While Gregory Porter’s
(Thursday, February 19) voice may recall the heyday of early ‘70s
folk geniuses such as Bill Withers and Donny Hathway, he’s a jazz

group that’s been around for more than 40 years, Sweet Honey
in the Rock (Thursday, December 4) sings spirituals, freedom
songs, and protest songs in unspeakably beautiful five-part
harmony. A landmark in the funny-nun genre, Sister Act
(Thursday, December 11) started out as a Whoopi Goldberg film
before becoming a big Broadway hit. Returning to the Flynn for
the 33rd year, Nebraska Theatre Caravan’s A Christmas Carol
(Friday, December 12) is true a holiday favorite.

Lily Tomlin (Sunday, March 8) studied acting under Charles
Nelson Reilly and made her TV debut on the Merv Griffin Show,
but it was Laugh-In that made her a star. Since then she’s won
two Tony Awards, a Grammy, and the Kennedy Center’s Mark
Twain Prize. Nine-time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion Eileen
Ivers (Friday, March 13; co-presented by the UVM Lane
Series) is not only the original musical star of Riverdance, but
she’s also a founding member of Cherish the Ladies. She joins
us this year for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. The
Acting Company returns to the Flynn with one of Shakespeare’s
most popular and enduring (and bloody!) tragedies, Macbeth
(Wednesday, March 25). The Nile Project (Saturday, March 28;
co-presented by the UVM Lane Series) is an electrifying all-star
band that embraces numerous musical cultures under one roof,
but it’s also a much larger project that embraces sustainability,
clean water, and sharing of resources across borders of countries
through which the Nile flows.
Peter and the Starcatcher (Tuesday, April 14) is the critically
acclaimed prequel to Peter Pan and winner of five Tonys, including
sound design, light design, costume design, and scenic design.
The New York Times said, “With grown-up theatrical savvy and
a child’s wonder at what it can achieve, this show never stops
flying.” The iconic title design was created by Vermont woodworker
John W. Long. Miwa Matreyek (Wednesday, April 15) is
an incredible experimental filmmaker who creates hallucinatory
dreamscapes, and then backlights herself into the action to create
an immersive, in-the-moment film experience you haven’t had
before. The African Children’s Choir (Thursday, April 16)
started off as a way to assist children in Uganda, but they now

have numerous choirs and seven homes for children who
have been displaced by war or famine. Their performances are
celebratory and jubilant. Gilberto Gil (Monday, April 20) is
one of the world’s greatest and most influential musicians.
As a co-founder of the Tropicália movement, he helped reinvent
Brazilian popular music by incorporating rock, reggae and
funk into traditional Brazilian rhythms. In concert, the Ukulele
Orchestra of Great Britain (Tuesday, April 21) offers a funny,
virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping evening as they
jump from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Redding and Spaghetti
Western soundtracks. This American Life host Ira Glass
joins dancers Monica Bill Barnes and Anna Bass in Three
Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host, a funny, lively evening of
dance and storytelling. It’s This American Life . . . with dancing.
Anything Goes (Monday, April 27) won three Tony Awards,
including Best Revival of a Musical. Featuring Cole Porter
favorites such as I Get a Kick Out Of You, It’s De-Lovely and
the title track, the story follows two unlikely pairs setting off
on a course to true love, while on a ship heading out to sea.
The New York Times calls Wendy Whelan (Thursday, April 30)
“America’s greatest contemporary ballerina.” A longtime
principal dancer for the New York City Ballet, Whelan enlisted
four of the most dynamic young choreographers today and
commissioned duets from each of them. In Restless Creature,
she dances these duets with each choreographer.

Cirque Mechanics (Sunday, May 10) returns to the Flynn with
Pedal Punk, which features the Gantry bike—a pedal powered
circus caravan that moves around the stage as the performers
—acrobats, cyclists, equilibrists, and funambulists—throw
themselves around on the moving structure.

EXPLORATIONS IN FLYNNSPACE
I often refer to FlynnSpace as a place “where the magic happens.” Maybe the close confines create a rapport
and intimacy between artist and audience that can’t be replicated on larger stages. Whatever the reason, believe
me, magic happens. This season, the Flynn presents a very full slate of performances that spans classical music,
African dance, adults-only burlesque, one-woman theater, hip-hop, international music, modern dance, a Dylan
exploration, and jazz piano. And that’s just a start. I’ll see you in the basement.
Mat Fraser & Julie Atlas Muz,
The Freak & the Showgirl—Saturday, September 13
Englishman Mat Fraser is a writer, actor, musician, and cabaret
host/performer, as well as a disability advocate, while his
partner Julie Atlas Muz is an actress, burlesque celebrity, and
former Miss Exotic World. The two recently starred in a hugely
acclaimed, visually sumptuous—and sexually provocative—
version of Beauty & the Beast in New York. At the Flynn, Fraser
and Muz perform an evening of no-holds-barred, explicit,
adults-only cabaret that challenges the audience’s perceptions
on a variety of topics.
Soovin Kim & Fred Child
with Alexi Kenney, Yoo Jin Jang, Steven Laraia,
and Jin Lee—Saturday, September 27
Last year’s two-show collaboration with the Lake Champlain
Chamber Music Festival—featuring Soovin Kim’s Johannes
String Quartet with NPR Performance Today host Fred Child—
were such a success that we had to do it again, but a little
differently. For this performance, four superlative musicians
from the LCCMF Young Performers Seminar Group, led by
violinist and Concert Artist Guild winner Alexi Kenney, are
joined by Soovin for a quintet performance, while Child again
provides illuminating context for the music.
Tri Minh Quartet, Sounds from Hanoi
Sunday, September 28
A new musical voice from Vietnam, Tri Minh and his Quartet
combine electronica, acoustic instruments, and traditional
motifs in a program of collaborative and improvised works.
Tri Minh’s soundscapes have attracted international attention
and he has worked with some of today’s top DJs and electronic
musicians, though his music is equally evocative of classical
music infused with regional sounds. (Please note this concert
has been rescheduled from its original date.)

Andy Milne, Strings & Serpents
Wednesday, October 29
An evening of multimedia wonders, Strings & Serpents is the
latest venture from adventurous jazz pianist Andy Milne, who
teams with French pianist Benoit Delbecq, the Japanese TsuguKaji
KOTO duo, and animator Saki Murotani to create this fascinating
tapestry of sight and sound. A multi-cultural collaboration that
marries Japanese and Western forms through improvisation and
rhythm, set against the backdrop of Murotani’s startling animations,
Strings is based on Japanese Rainbow Serpent mythology.
Look Backward, Dance Forward: Tales from Home
Faustin Linyekula, Le Cargo—Friday, October 31
Panaibra Gabriel Canda, The Marrabenta Solos
—Saturday, November 1
This unique two-evening dance-theater program features two
remarkable dancers offering artistic perspectives on the complex
histories of their respective countries. Hailing from the Democratic
Republic of Congo, Linyekula presents his first solo piece,
Le Cargo, which recounts his return home, and the things he
lost and found on his journey. Canda’s The Marrabenta Solos
examines Mozambique and its struggles with colonialism,
nationalism, and modernity. Accompanied by virtuoso guitarist
Jorge Domingos, Canda tells the story through marrabenta,
a dance that mixes local traditions and European influences.
Both Canda and Linyekula are first-rate storytellers, both through
words and movement, and their stories are well worth hearing.

Christopher O’Riley, Out of My Hands
—Saturday, November 8
Christopher O’Riley basically has three careers going—the
classical pianist who performs recitals and symphonies; the
radio host who helms NPR’s From the Top; and the musician who
reimagines contemporary rock songs as instrumental solo-piano
music. It’s the last O’Riley who visits FlynnSpace, where he’ll
turn his pianism loose on music by artists such as Radiohead,
Prodigy, Tori Amos, Elliot Smith, and Nirvana. The Absolute
Sound declares that “O’Riley’s integration of oceanic momentum
and melodic and harmonic beauty rivals that of the greatest
art-rock bands, Radiohead included.”

Steve Paxton & Jurij Konjar, Bound
Thursday, November 6
Dubbed “a titan of the 1960s and ’70s avant-garde” (New York
Times) and the founder of contact improvisation, Vermont
resident Steve Paxton’s impact on modern dance is nearly
incalculable. An early dancer with Merce Cunningham and one
of the key figures in the deeply influential Judson Dance Theatre
of the ‘60s and Grand Union of the ‘70s, Paxton (recently awarded
The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance at the
International Dance Festival of the Venice Biennale) makes his
Flynn debut with a restaged version of his 1982 work Bound.
He’s not actually dancing it, however; he set the work on Slovenian
dancer Jurij Konjar, and advance notice on the piece is fabulous.
Howard Fishman, The Basement Tapes Project
Friday, November 7
Bob Dylan’s Basement Tapes have always been shrouded in
mystery. Recorded in supremely off-handed fashion with The Band
in various basements and living rooms in 1966-67, the home
recordings mix originals and obscure folk tunes to create a
universe where portents of doom sit beside hilarious dadaist tales.
Howard Fishman understands these stories as well as anyone,
which is why his Basement Tapes Project has played to great
acclaim all over the country. Using Greil Marcus’ book The Old,
Weird America as a touchstone, Fishman digs deep into the
Basement, drawing on previously unreleased music and reimagined
versions of more famous tunes to create something new.

Performance is hip-hop dance as performance art, an autobiographical culmination of Xavier’s 30 years in the business.
Xavier plays with the rhythms of rap, dance, and narrative,
deconstructing them along the way to give insight into the artist’s
life and work. Visceral, yet deeply thoughtful, the show, directed
by Ralph Lemon, reflects an artist’s view on hip-hop’s influence
and history as the form—and its practitioners—age.
The Johannes String Quartet with Fred Child,
Beethoven & Bartok—Sunday, January 18
After last season’s deeply illuminating performances by the
Johannes and Child (host of NPR’s Performance Today), in which
Mozart was offered in contrast with pieces by Webern and Kurtag,
the group returns with this striking program, which features two
of the greatest string quartets ever written —Beethoven’s String
Quartet in F Major, Op. 135 and Bartok’s String Quartet No. 6.
The pieces are vastly different . . . or are they? The Johannes and
Child explain.
Kristina Wong, The Wong Street Journal
—Thursday, February 26
L.A.-based performance-artist/provocateur Wong concludes
a week-long residency with an in-progress performance of her
(by then) nearly finished work, a scathingly satirical look at global
economic inequality, inspired by her trip to Uganda. Hilarious
and fearless, Wong is a provocateur, solo performer writer, and
cultural commentator who’s unafraid to live her life in public
(her hysterical romantic pursuit of NBA star Jeremy Lin is just a
small example). Wong has five solo shows already to her credit
—including the lauded Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,
which examined the high rate of suicide among Chinese-American
women—and when she takes the stage at the Flynn, that number
goes up to six. During her residency, Wong is also active in the
community, working with high school students.

Fred Hersch Trio—Friday, February 27
A pianist who “specializes in high lyricism and high danger”
(New Yorker), Fred Hersch has reached a pinnacle in his illustrious
career. Hersch draws on 30 years of experience while leading
his current trio with bassist John Hébert and the drummer Eric
McPherson, which is “one of the major ensembles of our times”
(Wall Street Journal). Among the most respected and revered
performers of his generation, Hersch is riding a wave of acclaim
thanks to his latest release, Floating.
Terry Galloway, You Are My Sunshine
—Saturday, April 11
Performance artist Terry Galloway performs her one-woman
show, based on her experience as a deaf woman who received
a cochlear implant well into adulthood, and her struggles and
revelations as a person who suddenly emerges into a world
of noise. A mesmerizing storyteller, Galloway is alternatingly
thoughtful and hysterical, often one when you expect the other.
While in residence, Galloway also reads from her memoir,
Mean Little Deaf Queer, and hosts a performance workshop.

Education at the Flynn
Our education programs strive to engage learners
of all ages in the creative process, nurture artistic skill
development, cultivate lifelong appreciation of the
performing arts, and make the performing arts an
integral part of school and community life.
In 1994, schoolchildren attended the very first student matinee
at the Flynn: Stage One Louisville’s production of The Diary of
Anne Frank. After the show, one teacher wrote to say that his
students understood Anne Frank’s experience from seeing this
play so much more deeply than they had upon reading the book
or watching a video. With this comment, the mission of the
education department was born: how to get more teachers to
understand the value of performance in helping kids learn?
How to help audience members carry the excitement of seeing
a live show back into their lives? How to build audiences and
support established, emerging, and young artists?

To ignite creative sparks and foster the artists of the future,
we expanded summer camps for kids. When the Flynn was
renovated in 2000, two studios were added and we began
year-round performing arts classes for all ages, now known
as FlynnArts. Our student matinees series remains the
cornerstone of what we do, continuing to inspire students
and help them understand other cultures and life experiences
in visceral, meaningful ways. To build teacher understanding
we began offering teacher workshops in specific art forms and
in arts integration. Interactive companion workshops in schools
have been drawing connections between matinees and classwork
since 1997. In 2001, we developed our signature professional
development program, Words Come Alive!

In 2013-2014:

comedy, voice, and instrumental music, including three
Show Choirs for grades 4-12, 2 Summer Youth Theater
productions, and 4 Jazz Combo Bands for kids and adults alike.
UÊ"ÛiÀÊ37,000 students attended our student matinee series
from 173 schools and 179 homeschools. To nurture creativity
in older students we partenered with Vermont Stage Company
and Weston Playhouse Theater Company to sponsor the
Vermont Young Playwrights Program, involving over 20 middle
and high schools around the state.
UÊ7iÊÌÀ>i`ÊÀiÊÌ>Ê189 teachers from 28 schools in
arts integration techniques, leading 1,136 hours of workshops
in schools for students and teachers.
We take joy in the regular feedback that as a result of our
programs, children’s self-esteem is blossoming, and adults
are unearthing their creative sides. We hear of schoolchildren
deepening their understanding of scientific, historic, and literary
concepts, and of disengaged or struggling students who become
enthusiastic participants in schoolwork for the first time. We hear
audience members of all ages review performances as “insiders,”
demonstrating that they understand the elements of performing
arts. We see more and more teachers empowered with confidence
and new ideas about how to bring their curriculum alive, and we
celebrate the ongoing evolution of Burlington’s Integrated Arts
Academy, in which we’ve been intimately involved.

Seat Campaign
In Fall 2011, the Flynn undertook a capital campaign
to raise funds for facility enhancements, including replacement of the 60+ year
old theater seats. Although the campaign met its goals, many of our patrons continue to make
special gifts in order to name a seat at the Flynn. We have had donors come forward to surprise
family members at Christmas, pay tribute to special friends, and honor birthdays with
a surprise gift of a named seat. This summer we even had generous donors come forward
to name the four new urinals and new sinks that have been added to the men’s room.
Flynn donors are both generous and creative!
A limited number of seats are still available. For $1,000, we invite you to dedicate
