HOVERCRAFT 101
Q: WHAT DOES A HOVERCRAFT DO? WHAT IS A HOVERCRAFT?
A: A hovercraft flies a few inches off the surface on a cushion of air. It will fly over any
relatively smooth surface - water, grass, ice, snow, mudflats and marshes.
Q: HOW DOES A HOVERCRAFT WORK?
A: The engine drives a fan which creates thrust to drive the hovercraft forward. Part of the
fan thrust is ducted through the double skin hull to lift the draft off the surface on a cushion of air. This lift air is contained under the craft by flexible segmented skirts which keep
the air cushion pressure up.
Q: HOW FAST WILL THE HOVERCRAFT GO?
A: This depends on the surface conditions you are flying over. Ice is a very efficient surface
and the craft will travel 60 miles an hour (96 kph) or more. Long grass is porous and a lot
of the lift air is lost so that the hoverheight is lower, the skirt drag is greater and the vehicle
may only travel around 20 mph (32 kph). Generally smooth surfaces are best. It performs
very well on water, snow, ice, mud flats and sand bars.
Q: IS IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE?
A: You can learn basic operations in less than half a day, but like learning any new skill you
get better at it with practice. We offer hovercraft operator training at our factory in
Michigan. Our skilled instructor can teach you how to get the most out of your hovercraft.
Q: HOW DO YOU STEER OR STOP?
A: The craft is steered by a handle bar which controls the air rudders behind the fan. In the
smaller models, this is combined with leaning the body-weight right or left to steer. As
there is no hard contact with the ground, steering feels more like a helicopter than a
car. To stop you just slow down the engine and the craft settles to the surface and
stops. For stopping on ice, it is advisable to do a 180 degree turn and use the fan as a
brake, a method that works equally well on all surfaces.
Q: DOES THE HOVERCRAFT FLOAT?
A: The double hull has a polyurethane foam liner between the inner and outer hull structure
so that when the engine is switched off the hovercraft has full floatation for its rated payload. In choppy conditions, some water may enter the outer hull but this will be quickly
blown out when the engine is restarted or the bilge pump is operated.
Q: HOW MUCH DOES A HOVERCRAFT COST?
A: Our commercial hovercraft are between US$28,000 and US$80,000 (excluding the
Hoverprobe 2000. Trailers are between US$2,800 and US$9,000. These prices do not
include shipping, taxes or import duties. To purchase a hovercraft, contact the dealer in
your region. If you do not have a dealer in your area you can contact us for pricing on
specific models and for shipping quotes.

HOVERCRAFT 101
Q: ARE THESE LIKE THE AIR BOATS IN FLORIDA?
A: Similar, but the air boats do not fly above the surface as a hovercraft does and of course
they cannot go any distance over land. The Hovertechnics' hovercraft has a smaller engine
and makes less noise.
Q: ARE HOVERCRAFT NOISY?
A: The Hovertechnics' hovercraft have smaller engines that make less noise.
The Hovertechnics’ hovercraft are relatively quiet because of their larger fans which allow
the engines to turn at moderate speed.
Q: DO I NEED TO REGISTER A HOVERCRAFT?
A: In the USA, a hovercraft must be registered as a boat and in some states also as an offroad vehicle.

ROLE OF HOVERCRAFT IN
COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
HOVERTOURS:
Hovercraft can be used at vacation destinations to give tours of
otherwise inaccessible areas such as coastal reefs or swamps.
Our craft have been used in both the Bahamas and Australia by business owners who
wanted an extra edge and intrigue to bring customers to their resorts.
PIPELINE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE:
TC Brown has been in the natural gas production business for over 60 years. Most of
his 315 gas wells are located in an overflow swamp area. When the water rises in the
fall the wells are inaccessible by boat, truck, airboat, helicopter and other type of craft.
TC Brown said, “some people in Louisiana thought I was crazy, (a hovercraft in Louisiana
in a swamp and overflow area), but I laughed all the way to the bank.”
He used his hovercraft to gain access to problem areas in his pipeline system that would
have closed the pipeline down resulting in lost profit. By being able to access and fix
the problems he was able to save his company of over $200,000 in the last two years.
SURVEYING:
LandPlan Engineering in Kansas provides hydrographic surveying services. They survey
bodies of water to determine depth of flow or impoundment volumes. They use their
hovercraft when they encounter sand bars or swift currents which were previously
obstacles in conducting their surveys. They also use it while determining impoundment
volumes for detention structures as well as ground lines for boat ramps and beaches.

ENVIRONMENTAL DRILLING:
The Hoverprobe 2000 was developed for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in close
collaboration with MPI Drilling of Picton, Ontario, Canada. The hi-tech METADRILL
multi-sonic drill rig fitted inside the center of the craft is used by the USGS to take
core samples down to 100 feet while the craft is floating on shallow water or sitting on
mudflats. The Hoverprobe 2000 opened up new vistas of exploration for geologists to
collect data for the first time in areas of terrain previously inaccessible for core
sampling.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ANALYSIS:
Hovercraft can be used as transport vehicles in environmental impact projects to minimize
damage to the earths surface and get to otherwise inaccessible areas.
Víglundur and three other people from Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company in
Iceland, used a hovercraft to fly over a terrain called þjórsáver during an environmental
impact project. The terrain, only found in Iceland, consists of moss over wet sand and
leaves footprints when walked on.
Ecology and Environment, Inc. utilized a hovercraft in Kuwait’s muddy intertidal zone to
reach previously inaccessible areas to take core samples and survey the environmental
damage inflicted by the 1991 Persian Gulf War oil fires.

OUR COMPANY
Hovertechnics was formed in the State of
Michigan in 1984 and is a family-owned
corporation.
Its sole business is the design, engineering, manufacturing and
marketing of hovercraft, hovercraft trailers, related accessories and
replacement parts.
Our manufacturing facility is in southwest Michigan, a short distance from
the epicenter of the US Recreational
Vehicle Industry and close to the
St. Joseph River where it feeds into Lake
Michigan.
The location has many advantages. Nearby Elkhart, Indiana, has the
largest concentration of fiberglass shops and related skilled labor in
the US. Southwest Michigan also has a plentiful supply of automotive
related, experienced manpower. It is centrally located with regard to
the North American market and has fast rail links for container
transport to the Port of Montreal and to the East and West US Coast
Ports. Climactically speaking, Michigan has the advantage of deep
freeze winters and semi-tropical summers, ideal conditions for testing
hovercraft in all weather conditions.
