WHAT IS A HOVERCRAFT? A: A hovercraft flies a few inches off the surface on a cushion of air. It will fly over any relatively smooth surface - water, grass, ice, snow, mudflats and marshes. Q: HOW DOES A HOVERCRAFT WORK? A: The engine drives a fan which creates thrust to drive the hovercraft forward. Part of the fan thrust is ducted through the double skin hull to lift the draft off the surface on a cushion of air. This lift air is contained under the craft by flexible segmented skirts which keep the air cushion pressure up. Q: HOW FAST WILL THE HOVERCRAFT GO? A: This depends on the surface conditions you are flying over. Ice is a very efficient surface and the craft will travel 60 miles an hour (96 kph) or more. Long grass is porous and a lot of the lift air is lost so that the hoverheight is lower, the skirt drag is greater and the vehicle may only travel around 20 mph (32 kph). Generally smooth surfaces are best. It performs very well on water, snow, ice, mud flats and sand bars. Q: IS IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE? A: You can learn basic operations in less than half a day, but like learning any new skill you get better at it with practice. We offer hovercraft operator training at our factory in Michigan. Our skilled instructor can teach you how to get the most out of your hovercraft. Q: HOW DO YOU STEER OR STOP? A: The craft is steered by a handle bar which controls the air rudders behind the fan. In the smaller models, this is combined with leaning the body-weight right or left to steer. As there is no hard contact with the ground, steering feels more like a helicopter than a car. To stop you just slow down the engine and the craft settles to the surface and stops. For stopping on ice, it is advisable to do a 180 degree turn and use the fan as a brake, a method that works equally well on all surfaces. Q: DOES THE HOVERCRAFT FLOAT? A: The double hull has a polyurethane foam liner between the inner and outer hull structure so that when the engine is switched off the hovercraft has full floatation for its rated payload. In choppy conditions, some water may enter the outer hull but this will be quickly blown out when the engine is restarted or the bilge pump is operated. Q: HOW MUCH DOES A HOVERCRAFT COST? A: Our commercial hovercraft are between US$28,000 and US$80,000 (excluding the Hoverprobe 2000. Trailers are between US$2,800 and US$9,000. These prices do not include shipping, taxes or import duties. To purchase a hovercraft, contact the dealer in your region. If you do not have a dealer in your area you can contact us for pricing on specific models and for shipping quotes. www.hovertechnics.com (269) 461-3934 [email protected] Page 3 HOVERCRAFT 101 Q: ARE THESE LIKE THE AIR BOATS IN FLORIDA? A: Similar, but the air boats do not fly above the surface as a hovercraft does and of course they cannot go any distance over land. The Hovertechnics' hovercraft has a smaller engine and makes less noise. Q: ARE HOVERCRAFT NOISY? A: The Hovertechnics' hovercraft have smaller engines that make less noise. The Hovertechnics’ hovercraft are relatively quiet because of their larger fans which allow the engines to turn at moderate speed. Q: DO I NEED TO REGISTER A HOVERCRAFT? A: In the USA, a hovercraft must be registered as a boat and in some states also as an offroad vehicle. www.hovertechnics.com (269) 461-3934 [email protected] Page 4 ROLE OF HOVERCRAFT IN COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS HOVERTOURS: Hovercraft can be used at vacation destinations to give tours of otherwise inaccessible areas such as coastal reefs or swamps. Our craft have been used in both the Bahamas and Australia by business owners who wanted an extra edge and intrigue to bring customers to their resorts. PIPELINE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE: TC Brown has been in the natural gas production business for over 60 years. Most of his 315 gas wells are located in an overflow swamp area. When the water rises in the fall the wells are inaccessible by boat, truck, airboat, helicopter and other type of craft. TC Brown said, “some people in Louisiana thought I was crazy, (a hovercraft in Louisiana in a swamp and overflow area), but I laughed all the way to the bank.” He used his hovercraft to gain access to problem areas in his pipeline system that would have closed the pipeline down resulting in lost profit. By being able to access and fix the problems he was able to save his company of over $200,000 in the last two years. SURVEYING: LandPlan Engineering in Kansas provides hydrographic surveying services. They survey bodies of water to determine depth of flow or impoundment volumes. They use their hovercraft when they encounter sand bars or swift currents which were previously obstacles in conducting their surveys. They also use it while determining impoundment volumes for detention structures as well as ground lines for boat ramps and beaches. www.hovertechnics.com (269) 461-3934 [email protected] Page 5 ROLE OF HOVERCRAFT IN COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS ENVIRONMENTAL DRILLING: The Hoverprobe 2000 was developed for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in close collaboration with MPI Drilling of Picton, Ontario, Canada. The hi-tech METADRILL multi-sonic drill rig fitted inside the center of the craft is used by the USGS to take core samples down to 100 feet while the craft is floating on shallow water or sitting on mudflats. The Hoverprobe 2000 opened up new vistas of exploration for geologists to collect data for the first time in areas of terrain previously inaccessible for core sampling. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ANALYSIS: Hovercraft can be used as transport vehicles in environmental impact projects to minimize damage to the earths surface and get to otherwise inaccessible areas. Víglundur and three other people from Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company in Iceland, used a hovercraft to fly over a terrain called þjórsáver during an environmental impact project. The terrain, only found in Iceland, consists of moss over wet sand and leaves footprints when walked on. Ecology and Environment, Inc. utilized a hovercraft in Kuwait’s muddy intertidal zone to reach previously inaccessible areas to take core samples and survey the environmental damage inflicted by the 1991 Persian Gulf War oil fires. www.hovertechnics.com (269) 461-3934 [email protected] Page 6 Hovertour 700 Features and Options Hovercraft Payload (standard equipment): 750 lbs (340 Kg) Hull: 14'6" (4.42 m) long x 6'6" (1.98 m) wide Choice of Hull Colors: RED/WHITE/BLUE/YELLOW Speed: 40 mph (64 kph) on calm water, 70 mph (112 kph) on smooth ice Max Wave Handling Capacity: 2 ft (60 cms) Turning Capability: 180 and 360 degree turns on land, ice, and water Standard equipment: • 100 HP, two-cycle, two-cylinder water-cooled engine with high performance muffler • Electric and recoil start • Dual carburetors with automatic oil injection system • Exhaust gas temperature gauges • Tachometer • Two 6 gallon (22.7 l) portable plastic fuel tanks with switch-over valve • 720 cca maintenance-free battery • 36" (91 cms) 12 bladed fan driven through a 510H200 belt and crankshaft mounted pulley system • Removable fanguard and engine cover • Air-straighteners, four rudder steering system • "Front-first" lift air system with variable lift and thrust control • 76 Hypalon® coated skirts and stainless steel skirt anchors • Heavy duty drag flap • 16" (40 cms) windshield • UHMW underhull protection • Seating pad • • • • • Stowage pocket Navigation light package Hourmeter Accessory power plug Bilge pump Options: • Salt water muffler • Carburetor compensator TempaFlow • Crew protection windshield with wiper (in place of 16” windshield) • Removable vinyl cockpit enclosure • All Kevlar® bottom hull • Non-standard base color • Garmin® GPS • Thunder® T3 hearing protection • Mustang® survival suits and vests www.hovertechnics.com (269) 461-3934 [email protected] Page 7 Fly-On, Fly Off HoverTrailer for Hovertour 700 Construction: • • • Welded, painted steel swing and tilt 14 ft x 6 ft (4.27 m x 1.83 m) bed for fly-on, fly-off operation Painted exterior grade plywood decking Angled side boards to center and guide hovercraft Axle: Single 2,000 lb (907 kg) capacity rubber torsion axle Wheels & Tires: Two 20.5 x 8 x 10 load range C wide base wheels and tires Lighting: • • • Coupler: Four rear marker lights Two combined tail, brake and turn signal lights Flat four pin electrical connector • 2 inch (5 cms) Class I ball and socket type coupler Safety chains Dimensions: • • Width: 8 ft (2.44 m) Length (incl tongue): 16 ft 2 in (4.93 m) Trailer Weight: 750 lbs (341 kg) • Max Weight Capacity 2,000 lbs (907 kg) (trailer + load): Options: • • Spare wheel and tire 6 ft (1.83 m) lever release tie down www.hovertechnics.com (269) 461-3934 [email protected] Page 8 Hovertour 800 Features and Options Hovercraft Payload (standard equipment): 850 lbs (386 kg) Hull: 16' (4.88 m) long x 8' (2.44 m) wide Choice of Hull Colors: RED/WHITE/YELLOW/BLUE Speed: 35 mph (56 kph) on calm water, 60 mph (96 kph) on smooth ice Max Wave Handling Capacity: 2 ft (60 cms) Turning Capability: 180 and 360 degree turns on land, ice and water Standard equipment: • General Motors 4-cycle, V8 multi-port, fuel injected engine • 12v electrical system with 50 amp alternator • Dual 875 cca batteries with battery master switch giving OFF-1-BOTH-2 positions • Thrust system: Twin 39" (990 mm) ducted, twelve blade fans driven by Goodyear Eagle® Kevlar® Vee-tooth cog belts; airstraightener arrays; ten cable-operated air rudders and removable fanguards • Hydraulically controlled splitter plates with handle bar mounted electric push button switches allowing variable lift and thrust settings for speed and cushion control on the move • Integrated lift and thrust air system with Hypalon® coated skirts, rear mounted drag flap, six hardened aluminum replaceable skid rails • Fiberglass bottom hull made of hand lay-up woven roving plus sealed polyurethane foam liner with high freeboard sides • Woven roving fiberglass inner hull with glossy gel coat finish • Flat non-skid cockpit floor 5' x 10' (1.52 m x 3.05 m) overall with 18" (45 cms) high cockpit sides • Two triangular vinyl cushion seats mounted one on each side of centerline cushion crew seat and stowage module • • • • • • • • • • Crew protection windshield comprising rigid fiberglass gel coat structure with large curved windshield, two side windows with short roof plus windshield wiper and washer system. Its sole business is the design, engineering, manufacturing and marketing of hovercraft, hovercraft trailers, related accessories and replacement parts. Our manufacturing facility is in southwest Michigan, a short distance from the epicenter of the US Recreational Vehicle Industry and close to the St. Joseph River where it feeds into Lake Michigan. The location has many advantages. Nearby Elkhart, Indiana, has the largest concentration of fiberglass shops and related skilled labor in the US. Southwest Michigan also has a plentiful supply of automotive related, experienced manpower. It is centrally located with regard to the North American market and has fast rail links for container transport to the Port of Montreal and to the East and West US Coast Ports. Climactically speaking, Michigan has the advantage of deep freeze winters and semi-tropical summers, ideal conditions for testing hovercraft in all weather conditions. www.hovertechnics.com (269) 461-3934 [email protected] Page 19 OUR CUSTOMERS We have delivered over 1,000 hovercraft to customers in North America and overseas.
