decorate our Easter altars. Your generosity is greatly
appreciated.
We’d like to thank Maria Guevara, one of our
long-time parishioners, for making and donating
the beautiful green flower arrangement that you
now see in front of the statue of St. Joseph.
Maria made it specifically for St. Patrick Day and
it was in front of the statue of St. Patrick on that
day. But we thought, why not share it with his
friend, St. Joseph, on his day. And so, we did!

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan, 3.
The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their
mother saw an opportunity for a moral lesson. “If Jesus was sitting here,
He would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait.’” Kevin
turned to his younger brother and said, “Ryan, you be Jesus.”

We have returned to the Upper Church, if you are attending the 9 or 11:30, and you may have noticed the
changes in the Sanctuary. Following Christmas, we installed staging and replaced the lighting from 1920 in
the cove of the apse with LED lights. More than half the
lights were burned out and the wiring almost 100 years
old. The total cost was $32,000; this was paid for using
the profits from the Christmas Bazaar for the past couple of years. We thank all those who supported the bazaar and especially the committee and all the volunteers
who made it possible.
Since the staging was up, and was half the total cost, we
decided to bring in a historic paint consultant, Sara
Chase, and determine the original colors of the apse.
Once determined, we repainted the apse in its colors as
specified by the architect, Charles Maginnis, and Alexander Locke, who designed all the stained glass, murals
and painting. Locke was a student of LeFarge, the renowned stained glass and mural artist. The result is dramatic! We can now clearly read the words beneath the
figures in the apse, albeit in Latin. The deeper colors
also bring out the richness of the stained glass. This is
how the sanctuary looked when the church was dedicated on Easter, 1920. It is so nice to have it restored in
time for Easter, almost 100 years later. This restoration
was performed at no cost to the parish. Please keep our
parish in your prayers as we continue to celebrate this
important milestone year.

PALM SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 2016
A Note from Father Brian:
Bulletin Connection to the Readings
The Palm Sunday Gospel readings present a sad
picture of grown ups who succumb to peer pressure. Three
times, Pilate proclaimed that Jesus was not guilty, but he
gave in to the mounting pressure from the crowd. Also,
during the opening Gospel at the procession of the palms,
we see the adoring crowds hailing Jesus but soon the choirs
change to “Crucify Him. Crucify Him!”
Then too, we have Peter who promised eternal faithfulness.
When others started asking uncomfortable questions, he
caved: “Woman, I do not know Him.”
These three scenarios give us a chance to reflect on
our own faithfulness as we journey into Holy Week. Like
Pilate, do we know the truth but abandon it when it becomes unpopular? The fickle demonstrate another kind of
weakness, when instead of thinking for themselves, people
just followed those around them. Are we guilty of this kind
of passive intellectual laziness? How about Peter’s problem: do we change our story based on current company, or
do we live as consistent Christian witnesses in the world?
This week, may we have the courage to accompany Jesus
all the way to the cross, no matter what anyone else may
do.
THANK YOU to everyone who made a donation to help
the needy in our city through our collection for
the Somerville Homeless Coalition.
Today is the last day that we will accept
donations. “I assure you, as often as you did it
for one of my least brothers, you did it for Me.” (John 25:40)
What an opportunity we have to draw closer to the
Lord this week. How could we not want to actively
participate in the Services of Holy Week? The weather
is getting better; we know how precarious the world
situation is; we know the dangers our country faces;
and only God can provide us with the tranquil life we
seek, especially the joy of peace in the world.
