The Other Side
of Loving God

and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love… We love
because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar…”
1 John 4:7-8, 18-19
About 18 months ago, our Every Nation Church Singapore (ENCS) Music Team
had a resounding sense that God wanted to take us deeper in intimacy with Him. As
we began to study scriptures about demonstrating our love for God, we began to
see overwhelmingly that God’s heart beats for the broken, and that it’s impossible
to cry out for His heart, and deny that His heart is for others. The cross exemplifies
this.
I know God’s been working on my heart throughout this process of deepening
with this: If I really love HIM, I must really love THEM… (THEM could be ANYONE!).
Here I am: a Polynesian guy who grew up in the largest Polynesian city in the
world (Auckland, New Zealand) in a Polynesian family that attended a Polynesian
church. My world was Polynesian, and I was proud of my heritage and happy with
my Polynesian world. Now I’m a pastor at a church in Asia that celebrates having
many nations in attendance – no Polynesians, let alone New Zealanders (yet!). AND
I LOVE IT!
I’m reminded of Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10 where the Priest
and Levite saw a man beaten and bloodied on the road left for dead. As they saw
him, these “professional” men of faith, ignored the beaten man and walked on the
OTHER SIDE of the road. A Samaritan man saw him, and in compassion placed him
on his donkey and took him to a hotel, took care of his wounds and paid his bill. A
‘half-breed’ outcast was the one who assisted the broken man.
It’s like what Bono once said, “God is for us, when we are for THEM”. If you love
God, be encouraged to take your love to THEM. Christ took his love to us and even
died for us, because we were His “THEM”!

I was born with no nose. I was born with my thumb over my face. I came
out of my mom’s womb like that.
At an early age, I had a couple of operations to rebuild my face and
rebuild the way I looked. So growing up for me, I really felt insecure, and
I was a really depressed child even though my parents are pastors. I grew
up in a Christian home, but there was always this emptiness inside me.
Growing up and going to primary school and high school were pretty much
the worst years of my life. I was always made fun of at school, kids calling
me names. And all that depression and hurt started to get worse and worse.
And at the age of 15, I remember it really clearly, it was Christmas day,
and my parents were working that day. I was just sitting on my couch and
I got really angry with God and instead of crying, I asked God, you know,
“Why is this happening to me? Why do I feel so insecure and so lonely?” That
day, I made up my mind that I would commit suicide and end my life that
day, on Christmas day. I just called out to God and said “God, if you’re real,
do something.”
And He did. I heard it very clearly, He called my name, He said, “Omega,
I love you and my plans and my promises for you are beyond what you
could ever dream of or imagine.” And so, after that, I recommitted my life
to Christ and the song “Mercy” came out of that. And the chorus of the song
is ‘Your mercy saved me, Your mercy made me whole, Your mercy found me
and called me as Your own’. It’s a song of victory and thanks to God for what
He has done, and I guess that song is related to a lot of people out there
who are broken and who have come to the end of their hope in God or hope
in life. It’s been amazing, that song carrying [me] through throughout the
years.

DO WE LOVE GOD?

“God Loves You”
You’re probably already sick of hearing that.
The fact that God loves you has been so ubiquitous, you might actually be turning the page
already. It’s everywhere! You’ve been taught this fact since Sunday School started, since you began
reading the Bible by yourself, and maybe even in those gutter signs of public jeepneys.

A famous sonnet reads, “How do I
love thee, let me count the ways”. And
with the Love Month come and gone,
I’m sure many have expressed the same
sentiments for their loved ones. But
what about our greatest love of all?
How do you show your love for God?
To be sure, praying, reading His word
and obeying it are just a few ways we
can respond to His love. But have you
ever wondered how can we show it,
daily? Of course in our prayer closets
and within the church, many believers
express their love for the Lord whether
in worship or ministry. But the Bible
says others will know we are His by our
love. So just how do we express that
love? Well let me count the ways some
Christians show their love for God.
When asked, “How do you show your
love for God on a daily basis?”, some
of my church mates gave answers as
simple and direct as picking up trash;
to taking care of the body when sick
and choosing to save money while
commuting by walking instead.

All of which obey His commands
to be good stewards of the earth,
our possessions and our bodies—
His temple. Others gave more
unconventional ways like composing
rap or hiphop songs that preach Biblical
truths or give personal testimonies
(see Unusual Worship Music at www.
desiringgod.org). One youth also
shared about “loving God with our
minds”, meaning constantly reminding
ourselves of His presence.
But I like how an old worship song,
entitled “The Mission” puts it. It says
“Across the street or around the world
the mission’s still the same, proclaim
and live the truth in Jesus’ name”.
As one youth from our church said,
ultimately it’s about glorifying our
Lord. And spreading His gospel is
one important way to we can do this;
whether it be through volunteering
in missions and helping the poor and
needy through charity organizations or
fighting for justice of the oppressed. A
brother and a sister also shared about
evangelizing to a cab driver on separate

If you’re tired of hearing this fact again and again, then you’re invited for a time of humility
and action.
(1) Humility – because no matter how common “God loves you” becomes, it is still
a truth that should knock the wind out of your lungs every single time.
(2) Action – because everyone should be able to not just say – but show Him – that
you love Him back!
Here are simple suggestions you can try by yourself or with your friends. Make it
a point to make your actions of love a life-long habit! May your love (imperfect as
it may be) still strive to be a reflection of His.

OCFMA, spearheaded by Cayabyab
and other Filipino Christian artists, initially
created the event to lift up music about
our great God using different genres.
However, after being informed that the
victims of typhoon Sendong still need
monetary donations for rehabilitation,
Cayabyab and his team decided to donate
the concert proceeds to those in need.
The Kaya Natin ‘To benefit concert
series continued weekly until March 9,
with proceeds donated to the victims
of typhoon Sendong. With music and
testimonies from all the artists who
joined it, the concert series also served
its purpose as a perfect avenue to display
God’s unconditional love for us.

“It’s not how we perform for God, but how God performs in our lives,”
said Pastor Recca Gonzales during his group’s performance at the launch
of Kaya Natin ‘To, a benefit concert series for typhoon Sendong victims
last February 10. His group was one of seven powerful artists who were
used to declare God’s masterpiece in their lives and performed without
asking for anything in return.
One notable artist was Bobby Duclayan, Papuri singer and a testimony
of God’s faithfulness, who hyped up the night with the “Hell Song”
emphasizing on what the Bible says about Hell. He then continued with
a medley of songs together with Ogie Cayabyab, that caused people to
stand up and be amazed at how God has performed His miracles in one
who was blind since birth. (See photo)

Tell us about the song “The Saving One”.
Essentially “The Saving One” is a song about that attribute of
Jesus. Jesus is a lot of things and he’s revealed in the scripture as
the comforter, and the one through whom we go to the Father. But
ultimately, the work of Jesus on the cross defines Him in our lives more
than anything. And so that salvation, that grace, that freedom is what
we celebrate as the children of God.
How does being brothers affect your
dynamic as bandmates?
Well, we have to work through things
differently. I think there’s a lot more
honesty. We put a lot of things on the table
more quickly, and that has the potential to help us
move on quickly, but it also has the potential for us to
be sticks in the mud for each other. We’re a little too
honest. I think at the end of the day, it helps us find
better art, because we’re able to tell it like it is and not
just kinda tiptoe around things. - Tim

successes and failures with. And that’s a great thing.
To not be alone, to do all these amazing things (like)
travel the world, lead worship and have someone to
experience it with, is a pleasure for both of us. - Jon

How many other countries have you
played at, aside from the Philippines?
What’s the difference from playing in
the US?
Probably 10 countries. North America... we
have a lot going for us, and there’s just a lot
of apathetic spirituality. It’s hard sometimes
to really break through that. We’re very
consumeristic, very materialistic. Being out in
the world is really refreshing especially when
it comes to worship cause I feel like people get
it a little more when you’re getting into the
second and third world. - Jon

Can you tell us
a little about
The Saving One album?
We’ve always had a bent towards
not just doing music for the radio or
for the pop contemporary world, but
our heart has always been for worship.
And The Saving One is probably our
most concerted effort in that genre,
with songs for the church that are
congregational but could also be
covered around the world at churches
and worship environments. Songs that
people can sing along with us at shows.
For the most part, The Saving One is
a record that’s directed at THE Saving
One. It’s a collection of songs just about
Jesus and our response to Him and His
work in our lives.

become part of Starfield?
Colin is from the church youth group
we’ve known for years. We’ve watched him
play drums in church, and it worked out that
he could play drums for us on our tours.
Greg was actually our bus driver in a
couple of tours. We knew he played bass,
and so he was eventually promoted to the
position. It was really natural. Now he does
both, he drives the bus and plays bass.

Love was definitely all around at the Weird Love concert last February 18, 2012. Though
V-day had already come and gone four days prior, love was still greatly felt by the Filipinos and
Koreans who packed St. Thomas Square, Manila. This just goes to show how God’s love knows
no boundaries and is not limited by race or language.
From the start of the show, it was love all around when Korean dance group Victor took
the stage to kick things off. The crowd roared with approval as Victor stomped the floor with
two dance numbers. It was taken a notch higher when the band Orange gave love to the
crowd. The group rocked from their opening song “Sinag” but showed their versatility by
playing it smooth with “Crazy Love Song.” Orange’s love for the Lord was highlighted when
lead guitarist JT revealed that lead vocalist Mark Abella arrived mere hours from a flight from
Singapore. Talk about dedication to the Lord!
But the night belonged to SPIRO’s musical performance. The story revolved around two
young lovers torn by past issues of their respective parents. In the end love and forgiveness
prevailed and the lovers reconciled. There was no shortage of love with the audience giggling
during the whole performance. The musical also showcased SPIRO’s amazing talents from
song and dance numbers to original compositions. It was the group’s way of showing love not
only to the audience but also to the God who gave these talents.
Do you have any personal advocacy outside of what you do as a band?
We do a lot of stuff with World Vision in Canada and America, and that’s kinda been a
huge part of our show. We’ve probably gotten 2 or 3,000 kids sponsored from our tours in the
last couple of years, so we’ve been able to see a lot of money raised through those sponsorships
for those programs. We’ve had specific villages in Africa and India that we’ve worked with, and
been able to see the entire area development projects carried out.

Out of all the bands, whether OPM or international, which
one is your favorite?
For a long time, new soul artists like Jill Scott and Erika Badeau have
been great influences because of their songwriting and the groove of
their music. Locally, I love music by a lot of Filipino artists like Asin, who
else, Noel Cabangon.
What do you think of Filipino music being heavily
influenced by other cultures?
Which of your songs do you identify with the most?
All of the songs that I wrote were reflections of whatever I was going
through before, or whatever I saw around me. But right now, the one I
can identify with is “Possibility”. It’s a love song and I’m getting married
soon. (Gayle is getting married this May!)
It was written for the guy I’m marrying when he was still courting
me. He was a possibility. The song starts like, he’s not the man I had
in mind, but he was just a great surprise. Hindi ko talaga inexpect na
darating sya at bibigyan ako ni God ng gift na ganun. So it just talks
about giving this guy a chance. Don’t be scared even if, you know, I’ve
been wounded in past relationships.

You know, I really don’t know how to answer that, because
what I’m learning is that I just want to do what I do, and I just
want to write songs that the Lord is teaching me to write, and
compose melodies na the Lord is blessing us to come up with.
So in terms of genre or what category we’re in, I don’t really
know, because yun na yung music namin eh. If it’s gonna be on
mainstream, then, you know, praise God. But what I’m learning
is I’m a Christian regardless of what genre I’m in. So my songs
are always gonna be about the Lord. It’s always gonna be
Christian because I’m Christian.
Is that also what you want people to take home from
your songs?
Yeah, not just enjoyable music. I really pray that whenever
anyone hears the songs that we play, it speaks to them beyond
just a good melody. Parang ganun, it’s not us who will talk.
The message of the song will really make them take home
something that is of worth and point them to Jesus.

Tricky rocks a funky mix of pink, blonde, and brown
hair with black undertones that catches the eye the
moment she enters a room. Just like the eclectic fusion
of pop and rock that Maya’s Anklet plays, there’s always
something new and surprising that pops out of her unique
style – from black and red framed glasses to the purple
watch on her wrist. Another surprise: Tricky rocks hard
on stage, but she puts just as much time and effort in her
work as a pre-school teacher.
What are your thoughts on the Pinoy alternative rock scene
today?
Maraming maraming alternative rock bands ngayon, pero kontingkonti ang talagang dapat nandun. Di naman sa nagmamaliit ng
tao, pero kasi ngayon bihira yung banda na maganda yung kantang
nagagawa at maganda ang ugali sa iba. Ang hirap din sa scene ngayon,
ang daming pare-pareho ang tunog. Oo, di siya maiiwasan dahil
karamihan ng mga nagiimpluwensya sa mga banda ay galing abroad.
Pero minsan kasi, lagyan naman natin ng dynamics din diba.

We want to spread a lot of positivity in our music, and we
want to take our listeners on a journey with us through our
music. That’s why we just named it Layag. Basically, we just
want to spread some love with our music.
Are you planning to go mainstream or stick to the
Christian music scene?
Hindi siya talagang dream dream, like, when I was little I didn’t
envision that “I’m going to be this and this, and such and such.”…At
home, my uncle would play the piano and he would line us up, with
my brothers and sisters pa, parang Sound of Music kasi. Tapos each of
us merong mga recital piece, so I just grew up with it. I just wanted to
sing.

Why choose Layag or “to sail” as your name?
Doki is gorgeous with her brown eyes, glowing skin
and her hair pulled up in a messy bun. This candid woman
looks comfortable in an eyelet top and gold earrings, as
she talks about her work as a freelance graphic artist,
while also being the lead vocalist and frontwoman of
Doki. While there’s no deep explanation for the band
name’s origin, the name Doki stuck because when you say
it twice in Japanese, it means ‘heartbeat’.

“Keeper”, [because] I think makakakuha yung listeners ng idea of
the general sound that we like, and all the influences that outflow from
us as musicians. The song “Keeper” is sort of trip hop na may influence
ng pop, tsaka may maririnig ka rin na soul. Tapos, yung lyrics din ng
“Keeper” tungkol kasi sya sa trusting in the Lord that He knows the
desires of your heart. Siya yung in control, so we don’t need to worry,
because we have a keeper to trust. Yun kasi outcry ng band namin eh,
so just really trust in the Lord. This music that we do, we want it to be
for God’s glory and we want it to be a blessing to anyone who listens
to it.
I heard somewhere before that Carlos Celdran said,
halo-halo yung pinoy. That’s us. We’re really halo-halo, so
we shouldn’t really look at it negatively that we’re being
influenced by these people. The important thing is that we stay
true to us, and I think the main ingredient of Filipino music is
the soul and the passion, yung mga values natin. And we put it
in our music.

Which of your songs do you identify with the most?
Do you think it’s going to evolve into something bigger?
Or is OPM alternative rock growing too influenced by
foreign pop and rock bands?
In all honesty, you cannot remove the fact that we’re growing as a
country greatly influenced by foreign bands. I didn’t say pop or rock
because there are bands, especially in the independent scene, where
they play music from the post-rock to Brit rock genres. Kasi kung
Filipino music, folk talaga tayo eh. But yes, I believe [that] we are slowly
educating not only ourselves, but also others on the different genres
around us. It’s more on welcoming the music of others and not just
choosing what genre you want. Tipong, paano mo palalakihin ang music
industry kung di mo bibigyan ng pagkakataon ang isang banda dahil
hindi mo trip yung genre nila?

It would be “Lalala” and “Ibig”. “Lalala” because Josh, our
guitarist, wrote this song because of a break up I went through
with an ex. The song goes two ways: covering your ears saying
LALALALALA or lalala ang problema. It was a very rough time
for me and everyone else who knew him (the ex) and I.
“Ibig” because I have this certain peeve about boyfriend/
girlfriend love songs and Valentine’s Day (oo ako ang Grinch
ng Valentine’s Day. Nope di ako bitter), AND I wrote this song
because of how I struggled with God and how He reminded
me of His love for me.…People should stop ranting that they
don’t have a boyfriend/girlfriend, walang nagmamahal sa
kanila, because in all honesty, yes that kind of relationship has
a different kind of love, but there are A LOT of people who love
you. We have our friends, families, and God. We should stop

talents such as twin sisters Janice and Sonia
Lee are now certified singing sensations.
Having garnered over 62,456,960 video views
around the world, these sisters are showing the
world that they’ve got a lot of talent and love to
offer people who are willing to listen. (And trust

In 2008, the duo discovered the world
of YouTube. Fascinated by the concept of
connecting with an unseen audience all over
the world, they created their first account
under the name “Jayesslee”. The name was
their attempt to be clever – fusing both of their

Korean parents, Janice and Sonia never

ever – The Philippines! Janice and Sonia, while

Recorded live at Seoul’s historic Young Nak Presbyterian

songs such as “What A Savior,” and the No. 1 CCLI song sung by
