Page 2 Galesville Tidings Prez Sez: Summer Dinner Meeting—Galesville Memorial Hall I have been looking forward to this spring, a time to get out and re-meet the neighbors after a long winter sleep, well, maybe not sleep. It certainly was cold and most of US stayed inside to stay warm. The birds are back another welcomed sign of spring. The museum underwent a cleaning while closed, inventory performed and we are ready for you to visit. If you would like to sign up to be a docent, please call me at 410-867-2648. We can always use the extra help. The next quarterly dinner will be held on June 12 at the Galesville Memorial Hall starting at 6:30 pm. Guest speaker Lauren Schiszik will present “Dissidents, Pacifists and Vagabonds: the Quakers of West River.” She’ll be speaking about the complex history of Quakers in the West River Area -their religious and social Roberta Galesville Heritage Society, Inc. Ms Schiszik is an archaeologist with the Lost Towns Project of Anne Arundel County. The menu will be crab cakes, Chesapeake potatoes, summer squash, salad and dessert. The price if $15 per person, and reservations Appreciation Dinner The Appreciation Dinner held in April for the 23 volunteers who worked on their weekends to build the wooden deck around the gardens and the handicapped ramp at the museum was great. John and Dorothy Whitman put on a dinner at the hall, certificates of appreciation were presented to all those who assist with building the wooden walkway. Volume 4, Issue 2 Page 3 Galesville Heritage Museum On Sundays from 1-4 pm the museum will be open for visitors. Come in and get in touch with the history and heritage of Galesville and the surrounding area. The gardens next door are open each day of the week, every week of the year. 4th of July Events NO FIREWORKS This summer will be different than the last 12 years – a little anyway. There will NOT be a fireworks celebration on the 4th of July, sponsored by GHS in Galesville. Parade – 2 PM A fantastic parade will start at 2 PM on the 4th and follow the same route as previous years. The parade will be directed by the very capable Sue Hines - and we know she can put on a parade. If you would like to participate in the parade, or have any questions, please call Sue at 410-867-3541. Picnic An old fashioned community picnic is planned to start immediately after the parade. Ellen Berson, Debbie Bell and committee are hard at work planning a picnic (you bring your picnic), have fun at the games both for children and adults at the soccer field from 3 – 5 PM. That will Newspaper Clippings 50/50 Raffle Coordinate educational and/or children projects at the museum. Holly Clark has agreed to run the July 4th 50/50 raffle again this year. Your tickets should have arrived in the mail. This raffle helps run the museum and its many expenses and it is tax deductible as well. Page 4 “Within the Brick Wall Project” Galesville Tidings Volume 4, Issue 2 Page 5 Dedication Ceremony The society’s spring and summer activities started with the May 19th Dedication of the “Within the Brick Wall Project,” which included our new parking area and gardens. It is without a doubt an unending job, but they have tackled it with enthusiasm, vim and vigor. Volunteer are needed to do watering, weeding, etc., to help keep the grounds healthy and attractive. Regina Bacon and Gary Thurber, Grounds Chairmen, have been busy at the museum grounds as well, if you will lend your hand to this ongoing project, please call Regina 410867-7404 to put your name on the list. Our goal is to have a well-defined schedule so that the grounds will benefit from great stewardship care.
