It was simply a sign which reads “Parts Counter Cashier” that came out of the Cab Service building at Checker. It got me thinking about what Checker Motors had been. They made taxicabs for sixty years. They had taxi franchises in cities, large and small, all over America, and beyond. There were showrooms, parts departments, and repair garages. A lot of civilian folks liked the cars well enough to buy them for personal use. After the car line went down, they did metal stampings for the auto industry for over thirty years. Checker outlasted every other independent car maker in the country. And now I’m part of an excellent car club that recognizes those vehicles and that history. It just keeps getting better. The sign will look good hanging in my garage. PRESIDENT’S CORNER by Jim Garrison The best thing you can do with a Checker is drive it. Wherever you go, people seem to admire it, and a lot of them recognize it. It doesn’t have to be beautifully restored (although it’s nice if it is) for it to be noticed, and for you to have fun in it. Spring is here, a new driving season awaits with open roads, events, and car shows. Get your Checker ready, set, and go. It’s true that Checkers are becoming more rare. With every passing year, there are a few more that develop a problem with the engine, or transmission, steering and suspension, or just rust. It is in our interest to take good care of the ones we still have. We are fortunate that Checkers are fairly easy vehicles to work on. Many individual owners and most mechanics are capable of performing the needed maintenance. Some shops specialize in classic cars. We are also fortunate that most of the parts needed to keep our cars going can be found at local auto parts stores, and through Checker parts specialists who make it their business to help us. We must take good care of all the Checkers that are out there. See you in South Bend ... If you are looking for something really great to do in your Checker this year, start planning to attend the national convention in South Bend, Indiana, this June 25, 26, and 27. It’s going to be a good show, and very affordable. Plans include a walking tour of the magnificent campus of Notre Dame University, on Thursday. On Friday, we will get to see the AM General production facility where they build the AM1 taxi/limousine. A car factory, how appropriate. Then on Saturday we will tour the fantastic Studebaker Museum. Studebaker made personal transportation their business from Conestoga wagons to the Avanti sports car. A rich and wonderful history of an American automaker that all of us will enjoy. Then, on Saturday evening, we will hold our banquet at the Museum’s dining room. It will be a great weekend getaway. Start planning, so that you can attend this excellent event and share some time, stories, and experiences with other friendly members of our Checker Car Club of America. 3 seum.) One area is a collection of historical vehicles, like the carriage that carried President Lincoln and his wife to Ford’s Theatre on April 14, 1865. That carriage is currently on loan to the Smithsonian museum for their exhibition related to the president’s assassination, but it will be returned in time for our visit. THE CHECKERS ARE HEADING TO SOUTH BEND FOR THE 2015 CONVENTION AND SHOW JUNE 25 - 28 As of March 1st, over 25 people have registered at the hotel. A great start for a fun event. See you in South Bend! Tim and Zan Bower MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE SOUTH BEND CHECKER CONVENTION South Bend in located in a snow belt region of northern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan that gets blasted with “lake effect” snow caused by moisture from Lake Michigan. This snow season (about November through March) has dumped approximately 80 inches. As the locals say; “You have to have winters like this to be rewarded with our springs and summers.” We have secured arrangements to have a second car show on Friday, June 26th, at the Town & Country Shopping Centre in Mishawaka, IN. The main car show is Saturday afternoon at our hotel in South Bend. June 25-28 should be warm days (not hot) and cool nights. The area has plenty of large trees, beautiful flowers, streams, and rivers. (South Bend is so named because it is the south bend of the Saint Joseph River.) Thursday, June 25, will include a walking tour of the University of Notre Dame. Love ‘em or hate ‘em in sports, this is one of the loveliest campuses you will see. This is a guided walking tour about two miles in length and about one hour and a quarter travel time. Mishawaka is just east of South Bend. In fact, you can’t tell when you leave one city and enter the other. Town & Country is far enough from our hotel that I expect a different crowd from Saturday’s show, and it is on the way back from our plant tour Friday at AM General. Friday, June 26, is a plant tour of AM General. They are still making some military Humvees there, they make the MV-1 on a separate assembly line, and sometime in June they will start making the MercedesBenz R-class SUV which is sold exclusively in China. Friday will include lunch at a local restaurant and car show on their lot. I expect we will be at the Shopping Centre at about noon, so we can show our cars, get lunch, and do any shopping you may be interested in. Town & Country is a large, open style strip mall with the stores outlining the large parking lot in the center. Lunch choices there include: Saturday, June 27, starts with the Board Meeting, followed by a car show at the hotel. We have invited the local Studebaker car club to join us in the car show which should create even greater local interest and provide plenty of cool cars between the two clubs. Mishawaka Grill (Mexican and American food) Cosimo and Suzy’s (Italian) Noodle Alley (Thai) Kroger Deli ChuckECheese Popeyes Subway American Pancake House Saturday late afternoon we caravan to the Studebaker National Museum in downtown South Bend for our private tour of the facility and our banquet. You will enjoy this museum, as it has something for everyone. (Ed. Note: been there, it is a good mu4 Other stores in the Shopping Centre include: CHECKER SPOTTING CitiTrends Clothes Dunham Discount Sports Firestone Tire & Auto His & Hers Salon Big Lots Harbor Freight Tools Tuesday Morning Sally Beauty Supply Dollar Tree Radio Shack Hancock Fabrics Mega Play Games Furniture Store Kroger Gas Station My friend Ditmar Walker sent me these photos taken on I-4 around Orlanda, FL. We will probably be there about three hours, or until the crowds thin out, or until our money runs out. See you in South Bend! (and Mishawaka!) REMINDER—ANYONE UNDER 20 ATTENDING THE CONVENTION Be sure to note anyone under 20 on the registration form. They will receive a free gift. I don’t know what it is but Steve Contarino’s business Checker Motor Cars is sponsoring it. DONATIONS WANTED The CCCOA needs your help in order to make the South Bend show a success. Please consider donating items to the show to be auctioned off to help keep the conventions going. Any item related to taxi or Checker would be greatly appreciated to offset the cost of putting the show on and to keep the costs down for this and future shows. Also please consider sponsoring an event if you are unable to donate any items. Items can be bought to the show or sent in advance to Steven Barnes, 646 Long Island Avenue, Deer Park, NY 11729. Any questions can be emailed to Steve Barnes at [email protected] 5 els since 2010. Awarded model of the year in 2011 for the Packard (above) which was the first 1/43 ever to win this award, and, then for the 1/24 1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster Mormon Meteor in 2012. Automodello looks for overlooked marques and models to produce, or, we produce models that did not accurately represent the car such as the 1963 Studebaker Avanti Supercharged. MODEL OF 1939 - 1941 CHECKER MODEL A ORDERS BEING TAKEN Ed note: James Cowen, CEO of Diecasm, LLC & Automodello sent the following article. While not included in the article, their price list shows three different versions are planned in 1/43rd scale: New York Taxi livery, Chicago taxi livery, and a black and maroon “street” version like the one known survivor. Price is shown as $143.95 and the anticipated run will be up to 199 per version. Photo below of the only know survivor taken by the editor at the 2002 National Convention. Last, Diecasm does offer a payment plan of 3 payments on our 1/43 models. If you have any questions, please let me know. And please feel free to send this email to other Checker Car Club members that you know. I have attached our current catalogue which includes some models that will be announced within the next couple of weeks too. ORPHAN CAR TOUR In the past, a number of Checker owners have participated in this tour. There are several interesting stops scheduled; wish I could make it but it’s too far away. June 6 (Saturday): 26th annual Orphan Car Tour, “The Howard County Haycation”, starts & ends at Howard County Fairgrounds, W. Friendship, MD. For antique “orphan” (discontinued-make) cars & trucks. This year all cars must pre-register, and meals must be reserved, by May 30. See website www.orphancartour.org for flyer, or contact Tom Kenney at (410) 239-7071 for more information. The speed at which Automodello will develop this model is dependent on the number of pre-orders received for the street and two taxi versions. As of tonight (1/19/2015) Diecasm has not received any preorders. Generally when we are in the process of announcing a new model there will be an initial flurry; for example, when we announced our 1938 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria in 2010 or 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III in 2013, there were over 50 preorders per model (in the Mark III instance these ranged from $300 to $450 each). If you haven’t heard of Automodello, some background: We have been producing hand-built mod6 CONVENTION LOCATIONS by John Weinhoeft 2016 — Hershey, PA — planned by a couple of club members 2022 — Kalamazoo, MI — suggested by a number of club members to honor the 100th (establishment) / 40th (end of Checker production) anniversaries of Checker Motors I, and other club officers, often hear “it would be nice to have a convention in xxx” and I agree with that sentiment. I’d like to see the club have a convention in every state, or at least each general geographical area of the country. While we are a long way from achieving that goal, there have been conventions scattered around the United States the past ten years. There has been some criticism that a lot of the conventions have been held, more or less, in the MidWest. That’s true, it is a somewhat central location for a lot of Checker owners. It is also where people have stepped forward and volunteered to form a host committee for a convention. Experience has shown that planning a successful convention requires some “feet on the ground”, so a local person or group really is required. It can be successfully done from 50 to 100 or so miles away if someone is willing to travel to the site multiple times and locate and test out all the items needed. Here’s the list and how we ended up there: 2006 and earlier — Kalamazoo, MI / Gilmore Museum @ Hickory Corners, MI — traditional location and plant site 2007 — Ypsilanti, MI — invited by the Ypsilanti Auto Heritage Museum who were honoring “The Cars of Kalamazoo” at their annual show So if you live in, say, west of the Mississippi or south of the Mason-Dixon line, think about hosting a convention near you. It doesn’t have to be a fancy presentation, but make a list of some interesting activities in your area, talk to your local visitor’s or tourist bureau about things like hotel accommodations and scheduling, add a few thoughts and come present it to the Board of Directors as a potential convention site. Assuming the location gets accepted, you’ll have about 2 years to get over the panic and work everything out in detail. 2008 — Kalamazoo, MI — invited to help showcase the “Air Zoo” Museum 2009 — Los Angeles, CA — invited to join the annual California Checker meeting 2010 — Lima, OH — invited by the local Visitor’s Bureau and mostly planned by a couple of club members 2011 — Springfield, IL — planned by the editor with a couple of other members and assisted by the Springfield Convention and Visitor’s Bureau 2012 — Dayton, OH — invited by the local Visitor’s Bureau and mostly planned by a couple of club members NEW OWNERS GET FREE 1 YEAR MEMBERSHIP 2013—Atlanta, GA — planned by a group of club members Effective January 1, 2015 new Checker owners can get a free on year membership simply by requesting it and providing a valid proof of purchase, such as a newly issued title, a dated bill of sale or confirmation letter from the previous owner. To request a free membership, contact Treasurer Tony Mattern. 2014 — New York, NY — planned by a group of club members 2015 — South Bend, IN — planned by a couple of club members 7 liver mail and other misc items on a route. Not far from the ITRR Federal office, was a Standard Oil gas station on Broadway. One day I stopped there to fill up and saw a shiny black Checker Marathon – the only identification was a very small discreet Illinois Terminal script, in gold, on both front doors. I thought that I took a photo but must have only thought that I did, because I have no negative. I don’t recall ever seeing the car again and often wondered about it.’ CHECKERS ON RAILS Both the front cover photo and the photo below were taken by Thomas Glover and are used with permission; he wrote the following caption for the photos: ‘A friend and I visited my Great Uncle and Great Aunt in Greene, North Dakota, in late July, 1967. The Checker inspection car sitting on the main line was the only railroad equipment we saw in Greene that day. I didn't see the driver, but Greene is so small he couldn't have gone far.’ Ed. Note: On the facing page is an ad from Fairmont Railway Motors promoting their bolt-on adapters. Over the years they depicted different brands; in this case from 1965, it is a Checker station wagon. Checkers saw other duty at various railroad companies. Larry Thomas, sent me this note some time back: ‘I recall during my short two summer tenure with the Illinois Terminal Rail Road – the first summer, 1968, I had an ITRR Chevy wagon that I used to de- 8 9 and accolades from the judges at that show. Later I was told I was the only Checker to their knowledge to win or even enter a Concours event. OWNER PROFILE: PAUL RUDOLPH MY CHECKERED PAST I started my love affair with the Checker automobile when my dad purchased a new 1963 Checker Superba. I spent many hours & miles driving that car and my Dad even allowed me to make some light modifications (hood ornaments, mag type hubcaps & stripes, etc.). That car has been a great memory all my life and I jumped at the chance to bid on and win a 1964 Marathon I found on eBay. After entering and About 3 years later I was at the Carlisle PA Fall event wanted to check out the swap meet and car corral. (Ed. Note: this is a event put on by the Antique Automobile Club of America in Hershey, PA.) After spending the day, I heard there was an evening auction so I headed over to the auction site. After reaching the site, I noticed a bright yellow and red fifties style hot rod complete with beautiful flames. At first I thought it was a 55 or 56 Chevy, but as I looked closer I realized it was a CHECKER! Not any Checker, but winning some local car shows, I applied to and was invited to the Greenwich, CT Concours D” Elegance, winning 1st place in my class, a totally unexpected but incredibly existing moment. I received many compliments my dream Checker. Totally restored and customized with a Chevrolet 502 / 630 HP Ramjet crate motor, 700R4 overdrive transmission, and a Ford 9 inch rearend. Well, I never thought I would enter an auction, but I did just that and won the car. Sadly, I had to part ways with my original Checker because of storage problems. But I was happy since it went to a gentleman who purchased it for his 90 year old dad’s birthday, a former NYC Checker Cab owner and driver. You would think this would solve my longings for Checkers but who knows what might show up next. Ed. Jesse DiPaolo Stephen Hawk Sarah Holland Karen Kennedy Stanley Kuczynski Hoyt Woods 79 A11-xxxx-95177A ABOUT THE 2015 CCCoA ROSTER This roster is copyrighted 2015 by the Checker Car Club of America, Inc. and may not be used for commercial purposes. It has been positioned in the newsletter so it can be removed, should you wish to do so. Anyone who renewed by February 25, 2015 is currently included in this list; previous year members who have not yet renewed are also included due to the lateness of the renewal mailing. On the renewal form, there was a check box to request your information not be published. A few members have requested that their information not be published; those members (or specific information) are not included in this directory. By request, home and cell phone numbers are included; work numbers and email are not. The roster is organized in the following manner: country or state mailing abbreviation, and last name sorted in ascending order. So it is not exactly in alphabetical order; you will find anomalies like Maine (ME) being listed after Massachusetts (MA). Did you notice that 11 different countries are represented? There are 43 American states plus D.C. are represented. The year and partial serial number were included. For those unfamiliar with Checker’s serial number/ VIN scheme, here is a short description: A11 - Taxicab 4 door sedan 120 “ wb A11E - Taxicab 4 door sedan 129” wb A12 - Marathon 4 door sedan 120” wb A12E - Marathon 4 door sedan 129” wb A12W - Marathon 4 door wagon A12W6 - Aerobus 6 door wagon A12W8 - Aerobus 8 door wagon A128E - Town & Country 8 door sedan 1CMTS - see A11 1CMTE - see A11E 1CMMS - see A12 1CMME - see A12E The Medicar was a specialty version of the A12E. Surge cabs were created with used cars and could be any model. During the compilation of this list, I ran a ‘reasonability’ check against the serial numbers provided. In a number of cases, it was obvious that the number had been either misread or mistyped. It is possible one of us transcribing the numbers could have made the mistake. I have taken the liberty of correcting the numbers where the correction seemed obvious. All questionable numbers or missing numbers have been flagged with ???. Please check your information to be sure it is correct. While this list is incomplete, it represents at least 329 cars. We know there are more cars out there; we just don’t know how many. Best guess at the moment is about 600 - 800 Checkers still exist. The breakdown is 3 A128E Town & Country sedan-back Aerobus, 13 A12W8 Aerobus, 3 A12W6 Aerobus, 24 A12W 4 door wagons, 19 A-11Es, 31 A-12Es, 93 A-11s and 143 A-12s. Within these categories there were 5 Medicars, 2 Perkins diesel, 3 Oldsmobile diesels, 2 Surge and 6 Winkoffs. Because they are so rare, I did not individually count up the pre-1960 models but we know over 20 exist in varying condition. Please send additions or corrections to both Tony Mattern and myself. 25 rocket or a bird? We should give it a name before someone else does. THE CHECKER HOOD ORNAMENT by Bruce Uhrich The A8 emblem is also notable, not only for the fact that it was put on both the hood and trunk, but that it became the “Checker Special” door logo for the A9 and A11 models. On the A2/A3 models the emblem was a stylized shield. But, beginning with the 1950 A4 to A7 model that shield emblem was replaced by a script Checker. Try to find that part at an automotive flea market! The redesigned CMC hood emblem of the 60s and 70s was certainly a nod to the “box” design of the 1950s. So, if you ever see one of these items (not the ones on my car) they should be saved for the history they represent. Checker was very good at designing Taxi cabs that were in the style of the times and sometimes ahead of the design curve (look at the 1939 to 1941 model A). Their taxi designs also followed trends of the decades. Unfortunately, by 1959 the “box” design of the Checker got stuck in the 1950s for the following 23 years A common characteristic of nearly all of the automobiles of the 1950s was the hood ornament and a hood emblem on the front of the car. Today, the hood emblem or logo has moved to the grille and the hood ornament is gone. Auto manufacturers made a statement about their car with that hood ornament. I was fortunate to have both the ornament and emblem on my A8 Checker when I purchased it almost 20 years ago. Look at the photo of the Chevy, Plymouth and Ford on page 73 of The American Taxi (Merkel and Monier, 2006) and you will see their hood ornaments and hood emblems. Merkel and Monier point out (page 57) that the Checker hood ornament was first available as an option on the 1948-50 A2/A3 Checker models. Not every fleet owner wanted an extra trim piece. But, beginning with the 1950 A4 model, Checker used the same hood ornament through the 1958 A8. So it was around for only 10 years (48-58) for Checker. Once at a car show a gentleman asked about my A8 hood ornament. Apparently this guy was a collector of hood ornaments and had never seen the one on my car. It made me think that this piece was a design unique to Checker. So, I can’t answer the question of who made it or who designed it, but it does make a statement about the car. Hood ornaments were a reflection of the fast and streamlined 1950s, and the Checker ornament looks like a plane or bird with swept back wings that can carry the passenger where they want with speed, comfort and efficiency. I also think that the hood ornament had some practical value. From a driver’s point of view the ornament and the top fender line give one the perspective that they are staying in their driving lane. I find this reference helpful when I am pulling my car into my driveway. Perhaps it was also useful on the street. So, what is your opinion from looking at the photos? Is it a 26 got loaned to people who needed to use it (It is hard to trust other drivers). I was not to worry, the car now belonged to God. OWNER PROFILE: GARY E BARTO I now enjoy driving it more that I did before, because it is now for the enjoyment of others. What fun it is to be a chauffeur for God. My life is only complete through Him. To have your life complete, (not to mention all the fringe benefits) all you have to do is ask Him for forgiveness and ask Him to be King and Master in your life. He will come in to you as He did me. What a happier life I have now since I came to know Jesus. Ed. Note: Gary sent this article in along with his renewal. Gary is not the only owner to use his Checker like this; Bob Welsh was well known for use of his Checkers in charitable and church service. GOD’S TAXI I had the most beautiful Checker Cab in the world. Boy was I proud of it. I spent all My extra money making it nice. I enjoyed all the attention that I got driving it. People would stare at it when I was driving it, It would gather a crowd when I stopped. Boy was I proud. I was in My glory. Signed: Gary E Barto Along with the photo (below), Gary also listed the original documents he has with his car: Then ...... as I was driving with my head in the clouds at 55 MPH, on a two lane road feeling great, it happened ...... The unthinkable ...... , This lady in a large pickup truck, going the other direction, made a left turn right in front of me. There was just enough time to hit the brakes. In his most recent note shortly before Christmas, he shared the following (slightly edited to remove two questions that I have already answered): Paul Martyn was amused to see these on sale and sent me the following photo taken in the UK in one of the B&M stores. A quick search of www.bmstores.co.uk shows this item is labeled New York Embossed Suitcase with three different sizes ranging in cost from £29.99 to £49.99 (approximately $32—$52 as of mid-March). In as much as you have so graciously invited us as members of this Club, I wish to submit this letter for several points of some interest: Regarding a brief story about our car, let me tell you as follows. It is undoubtedly the only Checker car in Guatemala, and in Central America. It has been improved if at all possible with the following items: A) Edelbrock carburetor, for improved performance B) Electronic ignition in place of points and a coil C) Wide screen mirror that significantly increased the rear view D) Instead of the (round) Hamburger seats, we have placed a bench seat for three passengers, but not for extremely heavy passengers Bryan Weinhoeft sent in this photo of a new Matchbox Checker he found on sale at Dollar General. E) Two fog lamps F) New upholstery in fabric in place of the plastic G) Alternator and Motor Minder for performance and changes in altitude Now as a special experience, let me relate a story from last night. A charming and distinguished lady approached me (as usual a conversation piece) about how well kept the car was and how beautiful it looked to her, so after exchanging different details, we ended up with mutual European Kisses, i.e., the two cheeks and mine on her hand. Who knows, if we were both 22, what could have developed as a corollary of this exciting interview and whatever could have happened later on … All in all, we are continuously being admired for the Checker, and some go so far as taking pictures and asking if we ever wish to sell it, let them know … Sincerely yours, Alfredo 28 George Laszlo shared this unusual ad from 1963. It was apparently a local dealer promotion. Anybody know the story behind this brochure / ad? Above: from the editor’s collection, an older roof light Above: a somewhat rare company ball cap.
