» The big, white world can make just about anybody feel small. But at same time there is a fascinating grandeur. And nowhere
else is it more beautiful and intensive than on Sylarna. «

This is the title of Ulf Lundell’s fine novel from 1979, and even
though the action mainly takes place in Åre you still want to
find out more about the mountains of Jämtland. The cold air.
The fantastic natural environment. The magnificent views.
» There are fantastic trails. And the opportunity
is here to discover yourself, as well as new
acquaintances. «
Once you start exploring the wide open spaces of Jämtland, sooner
or later you arrive at Sylarna. Because this is an absolutely fantastic
place. Besides a stunningly beautiful mountain range, it is home
to one of Sweden’s cosiest and most well-run mountain stations.
There are fantastic trails. And the opportunity is here to discover
yourself, as well as new acquaintances.

4 | Lundhags vinterkatalog
In this winter catalogue we meet Kalle Grahn, an expert on
the outdoor life from Utemagasinet, Sweden’s leading outdoor magazine. In two reports he recounts how Sylarna has
developed over the years as well as providing tips on Sylarna’s
best alpine experiences. Not to be missed. And the same goes
for all the new products. Take particular note of Helags, our
advanced new shell garment in three layer stretch. Perfect for a
winter in paradise or a winter anywhere else for that matter.
As usual at Lundhags, we work with form, function and simplicity as our guiding principles. We have been doing so since
1932 and this is how we are going to continue. All to enable
us to offer the best products for the wilds, in the wilds and
with the greatest respect for it.
Welcome to paradise.

Simple, stylish and functional.
This sums up the whole idea behind Lundhags’ boots. But that doesn’t mean that the route there has been absolutely straight. On
the contrary. We have been progressing by trial and error since 1932. Changed the fitting. Experimented with materials. Examined
the seams. Basically the only thing we have stubbornly stuck to is the shell principle, as unlined boots are easy to look after and
dry in no time. But we knew that from the start.

Remember the socks !
E x tr a sole s .
Always use two pairs of socks in your boots. A
thinner pair on the inside next to the foot and a
thicker one outside will prevent blisters. Take an
extra pair along to change into.
Always have an extra pair of
soles in your pack. Soles also
absorb moisture from the foot
and get damp.
The sock department is to be found on pages 12–13.

• Store your boots in a cool place and dry them in a maximum of 40C°,
otherwise there is a risk of them drying out and even cracking.
• Clean using a mild soap solution or washing-up liquid.
• Grease the leather with liquid Nikwax, preferably just using your hands.
10 | Lundhags w inter 2009/10
• To ensure that your boots retain their shape and do not contract you
should use them a couple of times a month.

Selecting a pair of socks that are comfortable and functional is as important as selecting boots or ski boots. They should be moderately thick, have reinforcements in exposed places, and should preferably be a bit thinner around the ankle. And it goes without
saying that they should warm the foot without sagging or chaffing at the seams. We have socks for all types of activities. From hiking
to downhill alpine skiing.

70 % of body heat is lost through the head. If your toes
start getting cold you can start by putting on a hat. If
you start feeling too warm you can regulate the heat in
the same way, by taking off your hat. Another way of
cooling down is to roll up your sleeves and expose your
wrists where there are a lot of surface blood vessels.

Just about anyone can learn to repair a pair of boots. But it requires
time and patience. It has taken 28 years for Urban Eriksson to
learn the craft. And even now he doesn´t take anything for granted.
Urban is one of Lundhags’ own cobblers. Every day he receives
a number of boots that are in urgent need of help. Often it is
only the sole that needs replacing, but sometimes a total makeover is required. »Some customers have had their boots for 30
years and the soles can be as hard as hockey pucks. But once
we have replaced the sole and perhaps repaired a few seams
they last for many years to come«, as he puts it. On one occasion a customer had driven a snowblower over his foot. His
foot survived but the boot was barely identifiable. After several
hours in the workshop Urban was nevertheless able to return
the boot to its happy owner. Not like new, but still fully usable.
»That’s what gives me satisfaction!«
» Some customers have had their boots for 30 years
and the soles can be as hard as hockey pucks. «
Urban started at Lundhags as far back as a twenty-year-old
and has even had time for a spell in the manufacturing department. Even though the sole is imported from Italy and the fine
leather comes from Germany, all production is conducted
according to old traditions. Rubber and leather is punched
out and joined together with great precision using special
Nam e:
sewing and bonding machines. And it is rare that anything
goes wrong. Urban says that the least experienced of Lundhags’
cobblers has been working at the company for 15 years. So it
might not be entirely fair to still call him the »work experience
boy«. But it is quite funny.
»The boots that are made today are very different from the ones
we made when I was young«, he says. »The main difference is
that there is so much more to choose from now, the boots have
become more specialised.« It used to be mainly the design that
was different, but today different boots provide different support and cushioning. Above all, the material has been developed and become much more pliable. And new models are
being added all the time. Developments in women’s boots
have made particular progress. As a rule women’s feet are both
narrower and daintier, requiring a completely different fit. It is
almost impossible to say in advance which boot will fit which
foot, so they have to be tested on site in the shop. »The fit is
the most important thing of all« Urban observes. »Out walking
you can cope with a jacket that doesn’t fit very well, but a pair
of boots that don’t fit can ruin the entire holiday«.
Do you need to send your boots in for repair? Take the opportunity now during the winter when things are a bit less hectic
for the cobblers. It can take a bit longer to get them back once
the hiking season gets started in the spring and summer. But
they will be back in full working order.

A shell garment is in fact the one thing to wear if you want to have full flexibility and maximum protection up on the mountains. Lundhags’ shell garments have extremely good breathability, built-in stretch and are both wind and waterproof. Moreover, the low weight
means that they are easy to take along with you in your backpack. Use an undergarment closest to the body and combine with a thinner
or thicker fleece and you will stay warm and dry regardless of the weather.

cash is king.
There are lots of tricks to avoid dry and cracked lips in the winter. However,
the best way is to supply the body with vitamin C. Vitamin C strengthens the
body’s cells, which we are in particular need of in the winter. This does not just
apply to human beings. For example, the vitamin C content in pine needles
increases sharply in the winter. Read more about how to make delicious and
nutritious pine needle tea later in the catalogue.
Nowadays most mountain stations take every

Mountain tourism started on Sylarna and this is where Swedish
mountain sport was born. At that time, around the turn of the last
century, the location was regarded as very exotic and visitors were
usually devoted enthusiasts. Today Sylarna has been developed
into a popular destination for a broader target group. And just as
before it is adventure that is at the centre.
Sylarna’s mountain station was the first in the country when
it was completed in 1897. It had room for 18 guests and: »A
woman was hired for cooking and serving«. It was the peaked
mountain and the fresh air that were the real attractions. The
so-called air guests, who came from the dirt of the industrialised
towns, were the mountain’s first tourists.
Sylarna also represents the cradle of Swedish climbing. In 1899
Folke Wancke climbed Tempelpinnaklarna and the Slottspinnaklarna-Djävulskammen-Storsylen traverse, the country’s
first proper climbing route. The almost vertical Sylväggen route
was climbed for the first time in the same year. This was probably
the first time in Sweden that anyone chose a harder route to the
top purely for adventure’s sake.
» The so-called air guests, who came from
the dirt of the industrialised towns, were
the mountain’s first tourists. «
Gradually interest in Sylarna developed in earnest and in the
following years tourists arrived in ever greater numbers. Despite
this, attention eventually turned northwards, towards the higher
peaks in Lapland, leading to a decline in interest in Sylarna.
However, the mountains in Lapland do not guarantee a grand
mountain experience. Sylarna can be encompassed as a whole,
everything is here: The wide open spaces, the solitude, the alpine
features, the steep faces, the ridges and even the glaciers. The
feel of a Kebnekaise - though in miniature. You have time to
experience in a single day what would have taken several days
in Kebnekaise or Sarek.
» It is simple to take the train from
Stockholm Central Station in the
evening and ski straight out onto the
mountain the next morning. «
In recent years Sylarna has experienced a considerable upswing.
The station has returned to what it once was, when activities and
adventure were at centre stage. The Jämtland Mountain Sport
Centre has been brought back to life. Its function is to provide
guides and entice people to experience the Jämtland mountains.
In line with the prevailing trend for the outdoor life, families
with children and groups of girls in their twenties have discovered Sylarna, something that was not happening 10 years ago.
Interest in back country ski tours is also on the increase, and
Sylarna offers a host of different trails with varying degrees of
difficulty (read more on pages 34–35). Furthermore, accessibility to Sylarna is just right with today’s communications. It is
simple to take the train from Stockholm Central Station in the
evening and ski straight out onto the mountain the next morning. If you wish you can travel in a tracked vehicle all the way
up to the station to give yourself time for maximum adventure
in one weekend. But don’t worry that there will be too many
people. Sylarna will always be something special and will
never feel crowded out there. Also wireless broadband and TV
will not be arriving there any time soon. Tranquillity in front
of the hearth in the living room is quite sufficient after a day in
the mountains.
wh e n th e u n i on with n orway was dissolved in 1905 it came as a great disappointment for at least one Swedish mountain enthusiast. With a stroke of
the pen Sylarna had become Norwegian and the border, which ended up 100 metres farther east than logic dictated, i.e. over the highest point, cheated the Swede of the
peak. A personal attack! The man promptly climbed to the top and took it home to Sweden with him, or at least, the highest situated stone. It wasn’t until 1933, when a new
Sylstation was opened that the anger had abated somewhat and »the top« was formally restored to the surprised Norwegian representatives.

Middle layer – warm and comfortable for all activities.
The primary function of the middle layer is to heat the body. The middle layer is often a thin or slightly thicker fleece but it can
also be a soft lambswool jumper or a knitted jacket. The multilayer principle consisting of undergarment, middle layer and shell
garment creates air pockets that insulate the warmth and remove moisture from the body. If it gets too warm you can always put
one of the garments in your backpack, making the whole arrangement extremely flexible.
The Dynamic Jacket is made from recycled,
environmentally friendly polyester – the
same material from which PET bottles
are manufactured. Tip! Check out our
new fleece too, Turn 1/2 zip in the same
material.
We have removed the seams over the
shoulders as they can chafe when you
are carrying a heavy backpack.

Martin’s run is located at the heart of the spectacular Sylarna massif.
From the Sylarna station you go up the Slottsdalen valley and then
continue up the left hand side of the glacier. Aim for the notch
between the two Castle Pinnacles (Slottspinnaklarna). You have to
carry your skis in your backpack for the last section. A tremendous
view opens out in the notch, or the gate as it is also called, with Djävulskammen (Devil’s Ridge) to the right and a superb ski run down
into Tempeldalen valley. Follow Tempeldalen down to the station.

True, Sylarna’s highest peak is situated (1762 metres above sea
level) in Norway but there is no passport control on the way up so
it’s not something to worry about. With its alpine character, the top
is an absolute must. Follow the track from the station that runs in
the direction of the ridge between Lill- and Storsylen. There is then
a somewhat steeper section up to the actual ridge. Many people
choose to leave their skis here and do the final bit on foot. Be aware
of overhanging snow and stay a good distance from the edge. Enjoy
the area’s best view. Same route down.

Solitude attracts a lot of people to the mountains, and this is something
that is to be found in abundance around the corner from Sylstation,
on the left of Vaktklumpen. As you come around Vaktklumpen the
gently undulating mountain expanse extends all the way to Norway.
Choose a suitable snowdrift, settle down with the sun in your face,
open your thermos and enjoy. Easily accessible and peaceful.

The Syl Traverse is something of a test for aspiring Swedish mountaineers. In terms of climbing the difficulties are surmountable, but
the length and the high alpine character make the route tougher. The
Syl traverse can be really tough in wintertime. Starting at the foot of
the Temple, follow the ridge up onto the first pinnacle, lower yourself
into the notch and continue the climb up on Storsola. From here it is
a simple climb and scramble all the way to Sylhammaren just below
Storsylen where a short section of climbing leads up to the top. The
route ends via Lillsylen down to Vaktklumpen.

The Jämtland Triangle is a three day trip between the Storulvån,
Blåhammaren and Sylarna mountain stations, a total of 47 kilometres.
What makes this route a real classic are the wide open spaces, the
craggy peaks and the almost total solitude. Moreover, the three
mountain stations are located at just the right distance from each
other for a day trip. The Triangle as a whole is a perfect weekend
trip if you start out from Storulvån on a Friday morning. Food can
be purchased at all the stations, which means that you can ski with
a light pack. Those in the know put Blåhammaren last on the route
as the cuisine there is a bit special.

Herrklumpen, a rather modest peak compared with the Syl massif, is a stone’s throw from the station. But it is not the height that
is the reward, but the location and the view. A panorama opens

Syl massif and Vaktklumpen in the west. A perfect route to get

It’s the diversity that makes Sylarna what it is. The wide open spaces, undulating downhill tracks, and a high Alpine landscape with glaciers, ridges
and peaks. There really is something here for everyone. You can take
the kids up Herrklumpen, gaze out over Norway, Jämtland and Härjedalen from the peak at Syltoppen, take your climbing skins up to Slottspinnaklarna and head off down Martin’s run. Or why not ski around the
entire Jämtland Triangle, one of Scandinavia’s most popular mountain
routes. Here you are, six unforgettable experiences on Sylarna.

In the winter Nordostpelaren is a really tough route that has
witnessed few ascents. In the summer it is Sylarnas’ number one
climbing route. The rock is relatively solid and firm, in particular
after the first 50 metres. Go up the glacier to the foot of the column
at the right edge of Sylväggen. Getting past the crack between the
glacier and the actual mountain can be a bit awkward. Once you
are up on the cliff the climbing, grade four, becomes better the higher
you get. The route finishes at the boundary stone at the top of the
column. A total of about 200 metres climbing.

Safety first!
A lot of these routes require both experience and good equipment. Besides skis, helmet
and backpack, back country equipment also comprises a transceiver, a snow probe
and a proper spade. But the most important thing of all is to have company. If you
don’t have that it is best not to go out at all. Bear in mind as well that many accidents
happen on relatively simple routes where it is easy to underestimate the dangers.

something soft and snug – our new 100 % organic cotton T-shirts for example. Not to mention our wonderful bamboo garments

that it grows quickly and can be cultivated without pesticides.

We have chosen to use the finest merino wool in our undergarments*. Wool in general and merino wool in particular has a
superior capacity for warmth and removing moisture – the undergarment’s most important property. Furthermore, wool is naturally
antibacterial and is practically odour free. Tip! Use a thicker undergarment for really cold days and change to something thinner
when the temperature starts to rise again. You can also try a thinner long-sleeved undergarment together with a thin short-sleeved
merino T-shirt.
* Our merino wool comes solely from South American sheep and is guaranteed mulesing-free.

Desert in the winter.
Today meteorological services are easily accessible on
the Internet. However, the quality of the forecasts differs
depending on where you are located. www.yr.no is a
Norwegian weather service used by everyone who goes
to the mountains.
The term »desert« doesn’t actually have anything to do
with the temperature of the location. One way of defining
desert is in terms of the amount of precipitation, or rather
the lack of it. Large parts of our Arctic regions are therefore
deserts, and in fact, one of the largest is the Antarctic.

words.
Did you know that the Sami language has
over 100 words for snow. So when we were
thinking up names for our new hats, or beanies, we had plenty of words to choose from.
Guolldo, for example, is Sami for blizzard
and tjarva means frozen crust.
K e e p s w e at away.
Water conducts heat 25 times better than air.
It is therefore important that you don’t allow
sweat to remain in your clothes and cool the
body down. Wool next to the skin absorbs
moisture and the multi-layer principle transports moisture away when you exert yourself.

You were initially only going to go out for a breath of fresh air.
But if you take your time, sooner or later you become one with a
place. And with your boots deep in the snow and your face turned towards the night sky, this is the right moment. A crunching
sound comes from under your feet. A light wind is blowing
through the stillness and the weak light from the windows of the
mountain station is making its way over the snow. Inside are the
party games, the warmth, and the book that was so exciting. But
right now you just want to experience the silence.
The day has provided a fantastic experience and glorious
weather. Your stiff, office-bound muscles have had a real
work-out but inside you are at peace. For it is certainly true
that this moment outside the mountain station would not have
meant anything if it hadn’t been for that insanely sweaty
hardship a few hours earlier. You smile and think what a
strange reward this is, standing shivering in a temperature of

fifteen degrees below in the middle of the night, when you might
as well be sitting in front of the fire socialising.
» Inside are the party games, the warmth, and
the book that was so exciting. But right now
you just want to experience the silence. «
If the weather is fine tomorrow perhaps you’ll have afternoon
coffee with your back to the sun-warmed wall of the house.
Smell the scent of damp moss, bone-dry wood panelling and
sun-warmed skin. Run through the events of the day and
experience the rush of adrenalin anew. Compare your aches
and pains. It’s probably time to go inside now. Perhaps there’ll
be a game of cards before you nestle down between the sheets.

Prior to every winter trip we have to remind ourselves about the chill factor that
increases with the strength of the wind, to dress in layers and that it is important
to have a hat on your head and a windsack in your pack. But we never get to
learn how to build a snow cave – the acid test for every true outdoor enthusiast. So we thought that we would rectify that now. Digging a snow cave is not
necessarily a means of last resort for survival. It is possible to reside in the snow
voluntarily. It is social, comfortable and warm. Moreover, it is absolutely silent
and rather fun.
Digging a snow cave requires a lot of snow. And as we often have westerly winds
in the Swedish mountains snow usually collects on east-facing slopes. So, start
by finding a really big snowdrift, preferably around five metres high. Be aware
of the danger of avalanches – use an avalanche probe to check the depth and

get blocked with snow.
quality of the snow. It should be four metres deep and sufficiently soft to make it
easy to dig. Expect it to take 3-4 hours to dig a snow cave for two people.
Dig the snow cave at the top of the drift. Firstly, it is easier to shovel snow away
from the construction as it falls downwards. Secondly, it is good for safety reasons.
If you excavate the snow cave at a low point in the drift, the entrance can be
obstructed if it gets windy and snow starts to drift. The entrance hole should be
around 70 centimetres wide and standing height so that you are able to work
comfortably. Dig a passage straight in about 3.5 metres. Then dig out surfaces to
lie on on each side of the passage. Each of these areas should be about 1 metre
wide and 2.5 metres long.
The roof must be arched like a church roof, otherwise it will fall down during
the night, which could result in a highly claustrophobic experience. Wall up
the upper part of the entrance with blocks of snow. Walls and roof need to be
20 centimetres thick to keep the heat inside the snow cave. The sleeping places
must also be located above the top edge of the entrance to preserve the heat.
Make one or two ventilation holes using a ski pole. Excavate a reasonably sized

position them in front of the entrance.

space, the temperature will remain the same, but a large snow cave is considerably more comfortable to live in. The temperature in a snow cave is usually
around zero degrees, which is considerably warmer than a tent in wintertime.
A snow cave is fantastic protection against the elements and withstands both
severe cold and wind. The key is to start digging in time and not to allow
yourself to be taken by surprise in the wrong place out in the mountains.
If you don’t have access to a suitable drift, you can dig straight down
into the snow. Use skis and blocks of snow as a roof. Route markers
are two metres long and provide a good indication of how deep
the snow is. Stay on the path and mark the location of your snow
cave with a ski or a pole to make it easier for the mountain rescue
service to find you.
3. Welcome in! The temperature inside the snow cave
is around 0°C. An absolute heat wave for a frozen
adventurer.

the night so that you can

Before purchasing
• What is most important for you? A large pack
with a lot of pockets and features or one that
is smaller and simpler?
• Test that the back length fits you or that it can
be adjusted to the right length.
• Test the adjustment options, especially the
shoulder straps and hipbelt.

On your back
• Pack the backpack so that the centre of gravity is at the centre and as close to your back
as possible.
• Ensure that what you are going to need
during the day is easily accessible.
• Pack carefully so it is more comfortable to
carry.
• Vary the adjustments during the day in order
to spread the load.
After use
• Clean and wash away any dirt with soap and
water.
• Allow it to dry properly to avoid the risk of
the backpack getting mouldy.
• Store it in a dark place.
• When necessary treat with Nikwax waterproofing.
Thick sole .
In the scouts we were always taught to stand on a bundle of twigs if we had to stand still for any length of time. This
isn’t just an »old wives tale« that has come about by accident. In actual fact, where we make contact with the ground
is one of the most important places to protect in the winter. The sole in our winter boots is different than that in our
summer boots, with much thicker insulation that provides protection against the cold ground. Should you nevertheless get cold when you stand still, it might be because your felt sole has become damp due to sweaty feet. Always
have a spare pair with you in your backpack and change them as soon as your toes feel cold. Dry the used soles inside
your clothes and you will have a dry pair when the time comes for the next change.

At Lundhags we are at least as passionate about skating as we are about hiking. Because you have to agree that there is something
very special about speeding along in long strides over ice that is as smooth as a mirror. The sense of speed. The freedom. And the
silence that is only broken by the singing sound under the blades (and perhaps a flapping anorak). Choosing skates from Lundhags
means that you travel on high-class, stainless chrome steel from Sandvik. It further enhances the experience, whether you prefer
fixed or detachable heels.

Areas of particular importance for the natural world can be protected by establishing a nature reserve. There
are currently some 3,000 nature reserves in Sweden and together they comprise about 9 % of the country’s
area. An even more substantial way of providing protection is to create a national park. This can only be done
by the Government and today there are barely 30 of them. If an area is put on UNESCO’s world heritage list
it is considered to have major significance for all of humanity. The mountain region of Laponia is currently
one such area.

I c e sa f e t y.
In recent years long-distance skating has developed into something of a national sport. And it’s not hard to understand why.
Few other sports offer the same fantastic experiences of the natural world. However, it is important never to compromise on
safety. With knowledge, the right equipment and the right company out on the ice you minimize the risks and can concentrate
fully on enjoyment.

The shivers.
The winter is best in the spring.
Boil a few handfuls of pine needles in half a litre of water. Allow the tea to
simmer on a low heat for 15-20 mins. Enjoy! The beverage will provide a third
of your daily vitamin C requirement and carbohydrates equivalent to a lump
of sugar. If you put a few dried heather flowers in to simmer with the tea it will
taste even better.
Perhaps the most common reason for getting cold is actually
not your clothes, but the body’s fluid balance. On cold days you
become dehydrated more quickly as you dress more warmly and
steam is lost through breathing. With time you learn to recognise
»the shivers« caused directly by cold or lack of fluids.
The Swedish mountain chain extends all the way from Dalarna
up to the border. At the very top of the country the days are almost non-existent in December. If you want to get the most out
of your days then the best opportunities are in April and May.
