Newsletter of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society STJS is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of traditional jazz music. 301 N. 10th Street • Sacramento, CA 95811 • (916) 444-2004 • www.sacjazz.org VOLUME 47 • NO. 4 MAY 2015 HOT CITY = hot jazz & swing for Mother’s Day, May 10 T he STJS Music Committee voted a few months ago to feature some bands in May and June that include younger musicians who have a connection to STJS jazz education and are now performing as professional jazz musicians. They deserve our support, and we deserve a chance to enjoy the fruits of our education programs. For May, we’re bringing Hot City, led by Zack Sapunor, and in June, we’re bringing the West End Stompers to our Jazz Sunday Main Stage. Both will bring hot jazz and swing with lots of energy and humor. HOT CITY: Returning to his California home after two years of recording and touring throughout the United States and Europe (Jim Cullum Jazz Band, Wayne “The Train” Hancock”), bassist and vocalist Zack Sapunor did so with the notion of a new ensemble that was steeped (continued on page 5) June 14 Jazz Sunday West End Stompers – trad and swing (Sacramento, CA) Over the years, each band member has traveled the country playing for lindy exchanges, competitions, and jazz festivals. The West End Stompers are sure to keep you dancing all afternoon with their swingin’ tunes! 2015 SAC. SUMMARY by Tom Duff T he 42nd Sacramento Music Festival is just about here. Things are going well and we have much interest in the talent that we are providing, and that interest is in the form of ticket sales. It is “all hands on deck” at this point to get the last minute details finished. If you have not already, you will be seeing ads in the paper, on radio and TV. I would be interested to hear from you about the media that you have heard, and what avenue you received it from. My email is [email protected] or you can call the office: 444-2004. I feel very confident that the 2015 Sacramento Music Festival will be a tremendous success. We are also approaching the Big Day of Giving in Sacramento. I am excitied that, first of all, we are participating, and secondly, that I expect generous donations. The “BIG DoG” lets all non-profits in the Sacramento Area profile themselves and solicit donations from the general public. I hope that we do well as this is our first year. “JAZZ SUNDAY” ADMISSION Admission to “Jazz Sunday” is by donation of $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Persons under 12 are admitted free. Youth 12-20 (members) $5, youth 12-20 (non-members) $7. GOLD CARD AUDITIONS Auditions are held twice a year: Mar. & Oct., 11 am prior to “Jazz Sunday.” Applications are available from the Gold Card Coordinator, to be completed one month before the audition. For info: 444-2004. 2 http://sacjazz.org Please visit the STJS website to download the “AATJ” as a PDF and to sign up for our e-mail list so you can receive the monthly SacJazz-E-News — a brief, online newsletter with important news notes and links for STJS events. BIG Thanks for contributing! STJS received 81 gifts totaling $7,935. Thank You to all the volunteers for the considerable efforts to make the Festival a success. Many of you have worked long hours and utilized personal resources so the Festival may continue. Thanks is not enough, but it’s all we can give for now. The Sac. Trad. Jazz Society is a non-profit organization established under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code for the purpose of educating the public and members on matters concerning the preservation and promotion of traditional jazz music, and the study and play of musical instruments associated with traditional jazz music. Monthly “Jazz Sunday” typically occurs on the 2nd Sunday, at ELKS #6, 6446 Riverside Blvd., Sac., CA 95831. This official meeting is open to all STJS members and to the general public. STJS EXEC. DIRECTOR <[email protected]> In the Months Ahead 2nd Sunday MUSIC from 12 noon to 5:00 pm DIRECTIONS: Elks Lodge #6 6446 Riverside Blvd. Sac., CA 95831 West of I-5 at Florin Rd. & Riverside Blvd. May 10 – HOT CITY, jazz/hot swing/rumba — Sac., CA ELKS not serving breakfast on this day June 14– WEST END STOMPERS, trad/swing — Sac. STEVE YOCUM, tbn — NOLA 42nd annual May 22–25, 2015 Memorial Day Weekend May 2015 President’s Message by Dave Becker STJS PRESIDENT <[email protected]> T he 2015 Sacramento Music Festival is going more than full blast thanks to Tom Duff, Dennis Grimes and many others. I really don’t know when Tom and Dennis sleep; I am getting emails from them all day-and-night long. I don’t know if you know what it takes to put on the Sacramento Music Festival, but I sure found out fast; I didn’t realize until I started helping. All the people you have to contact, and all the meetings that are held, plus all the required paperwork that must be submitted to put on the Music Festival. What a huge learning experience and challenge. Yes, we have made some minor mistakes, but we are learning from these mistakes. We understand that not everything will be perfect, like we want it to be, because we our learning everything from scratch; we do have some excellent help from individuals that have been involved in the Music Festival for years. I know some of you are upset with this year’s lineup, but we are on a very tight budget. Some of the bands that I contacted were already booked; others were way over our budget. I felt that we needed to rotate some of our traditional bands this year and have some bands that haven’t played for years. We do have an AWESOME lineup, and I hope everyone will be there and have fun. If the Sacramento Music Festival is not enough on our plate, which is now over flowing, we are also participating in the BIG Day of Giving, a local initiative to increase philanthropy in the Greater Sacramento region. The effort is brought to you by GiveLocalNow and your local community foundations: Sacramento Region Community Foundation, Placer Community Foundation and Yolo Community Foundation. The 2015 BIG Day of Giving takes place midnight to midnight on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. For those 24 hours, online donations are accepted through bigdayofgiving.org with a goal to inspire and unite our community in supporting hundreds of local nonprofits. The “BIG DoG” is part of a National Day of Giving called Give Local America. Last year, the BIG DoG ranked #2 in the nation. Let’s be #1 in 2015! As promised, we had the drawing pertaining to our campaign request to keep the Sacramento Music Festival alive; this was a random drawing. The winners are (drum roll please): (President’s Message continued in next column) May 2015 Have a great time at the Festival! (President’s Message cont. — winners from drawing) Julie Rigali won a free room at the Holiday Inn for May 22–25, 2015 Pat Kennedy won an All-Events Pass for the 2015 Sacramento Music Festival Russell Hurley won a $50.00 VISA gift card Laura Boroja won 2 passes to any Jazz Sunday Congratulation to the winners. Again thank you all for helping to keep the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society and the Sacramento Music Festival alive and serving the community. NEXT GEN. BANDS listed on page 9 May 2015 Hot City (cont.) in the classic “hot” jazz sound. HOT CITY truly is that band. Joining Zack are regular band members William Dendle (2014 “Musician of the Year” at Monterey’s Jazz Bash by the Bay) on plectrum guitar and banjo, and bright-young-talent Jeff Kreis (Crescent Katz, Element Brass Band) with his red hot trumpet. These musicians have the capability to explore musical flavors from around the world, all the while bringing it home with their finely honed enthusiasm for the work of classic jazz masters Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and many more giants (famous and obscure). This special performance will feature the larger HOT CITY Sextet. They’ll be adding three musicians familar to STJS (all having contributed much to our club over the years): Otis Mourning on tenor sax, Bonnie Otto on piano, and Mark Curry on clarinet. We gladly welcome them! While HOT CITY mixes and matches exotic sounds over a hot swingin’ foundation, anything they do is done with a passion and zest for their respective instruments. No matter which way one’s individual tastes may lie, anyone who witnesses a HOT CITY performance will experience the undeniable pleasure of hearing musicians who have dedicated their lives to mining this rich musical tradition with not only competence and expression, but with pure joy and enthusiasm. 2 attending May 10 Jazz Sunday T hanks to another generous sponsor, STJS will be carrying on the Mother’s Day tradition of giving out lovely carnations to the “Moms” at the Jazz Sunday. This year, Charlie Gehlbach is providing the carnations in honor of his late wife, Marilyn. Arrangements to purchase the carnations were made by Elinor Hackett, who got a bargain from Vanity Fair Florist in Arden Park. Originally, it was Felix Smith who came up with this gift idea, and STJS paid for the flowers. Three years ago, when STJS could no longer spare the funds, the tradition was carried on by sponsors: first Nancy Giffin, then Elinor Hackett, and last year, Dominic Ruggieri. Handing out a single flower is so simple yet so special, and so much appreciated by all our moms. Enjoy, ladies! Jazz Sundays: On May 10, Elks will NOT be serving breakfast. On June 14, the Tailgate Room will temporarily be in the Game Room instead of the usual Emblem Room. On July 12, the Elks has a wedding scheduled, so Jazz Sunday will be on the 3rd Sunday, July 19 instead. C an that man play piano???? I’ll say he can!!! Even if the piano is the Elk’s quite elderly-but-elegant baby grand. Mike Lipskin said he’s not fond of spinets, so when he saw the grand tucked into the back corner, he was immediately hooked. Fortunately, its tuning held up, because a good portion of both his sets were solo or small group numbers, most with vocal (“I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” for example). He was dazzling by himself, and Ringwald’s choices of sidemen for both sets were right there, too: Dave Johnson and Mark Curry were on trumpet and reeds, respectively, for both sets. Bob Williams and Steve Gonsoulin were the trombonists, and Greg Ayala and Gene Copelan were on drums. David Rees was the first bass player and – wait for it – Charlie Hull played bass on Lipskin’s second set! Now, I’ve known Charlie Hull for easily 40 years, and – he plays bass???? (As Yogi Bera probably said, I appear to have forgotten more than I ever knew.) Anyway, Lipskin has been an entertainer all his life. With an acerbic wit and five guys as straight men, it was a hoot. And “Viper’s Drag” was marvelous! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Mica Dugan, who brought TWO youth bands: one for the Tailgate, and one for Main Stage. The Next Gen Jazz Kids played so well on Set 1! They’re 5th and 6th graders (10-12 years old), and SO fun to hear. Grace Eastlick was on trumpet, Catherine Treadwell on clarinet, Matthew Taylor on tenor sax, Elias Bevan, trombone, Jonah Pritchard on strings, pianist Dylan Joelson, Nora Severeid, bass, with drummer Joseph Bly and vocalist Faye Joelson. Dylan, Nora, Jonah and Joseph were joined for TG Set 3 by Lucas Saylors on trumpet, Ben Hansen on trombone, Jacob Gallager, reeds; Alison Hughes on flute, and singer E.V. Cannon Wheeler. They obviously have all been working hard, absorbing the spirit as well as the technique of Our Kind of Music (OKOM). Jane Gallagher, STJS Gold Card vocalist, finally connected with Ringwald to book her band, Easy Swing Sacramento, for MIKE LIPSKIN Apr. 12, 2015 6 May 2015 Set 3 on Main Stage. She brought Jay Chopp, trumpet; Bob Shebesta, sax; Bill Taylor, piano; Ken Campbell, guitar; Ken Lagomarsino, bass; and Wayne Ramirez, drums. Excellent choices! Swingin’ singin’! Balancing bands and time is harder than you think, but Bob Ringwald was able to schedule 5 sets this month, and Set 5 also was led by a longtime Gold Card member. In fact, Dick Lockwood goes back at least to the Carmichael Elks days. He recruited Dave Johnson, Carl Kaiser, Frank Lindskoog, Mark Kramer, Ray Farley, Carl Warmdahl and Geri Eckert. He chose songs not heard so often, and called the group the Seldom “Herd” Jazz Band. Clever, yes? As they came off the dance floor, Paige and Tom Morrow designated the band “awesome.” Good job, Dick! Wife Kerry was visibly proud. Carl Warmdahl had a happy surprise when his daughter and grandson, Erica and Jacob Rollins, came to see him on the Main Stage. Nina Murray said friend Lynn Delaney was there for the first time. We were glad to see Tom Chalmers, too. Seldom Herd actually was heard twice – they warmed up on Set 2 in the Tailgate, with extra vocals by Jane Reinmuth and Jim Fusaro. TG Set 1 was led by Bob Hoffman, with Carl Kaiser on t-bone, Parker Weis and Bennie Torres on reeds; the rhythm section was Shelby Janes, Jimmy Spero, Dave Sieber and Tony May 2015 Bellacera, with vocalists Bev Ludlow and Aiko Hamaguchi. Janes was back for Set 4 but on drums this time. Hoffman and Sieber were there too, along with Larry Tyrell. Dominic Ruggieri and newbie Dave Schetter were on reeds, and Ned Poffinbarger and Billie Menz in the back. Claude Purcell was the vocalist. Jane persuaded SwingMasters’ pianist Greg Joseph to join Jay Chopp, Jack Mootz, Ruggieri and John Tanko and Jim Laveroni on TG Set 5. Phil Anderson is a new string player, and Kate Rees and Bev Ludlow were vocalists. For a special added attraction, Bev supplemented the rhythm section on washboard. Anyone walking into the Gold Card Room ran into a Grant Union High School mini-reunion. One of the Houdashelt Twins saw the Four Lads perform in Mesa, Arizona, and recognized former classmate, Harry DuVall. Even though Dorothy Trapanese lives just blocks from the Elks, and IS an Elk, she had no idea Harry sang with the Jazz Society. She called everybody (including her twin Donna Etheridge) and the Class of ’49 came to “par-tay”! Well, mostly they were poring over old yearbooks and programs from band and chorus AND other vocal performances. The group included Richard Hanson, Joaquin Pereira with wife Rose; Gerald “Chuck” McAfee and daughter Patty; Betty Bianco (they’re all Elks), and Vicky Titman. Gordon Nevis of the Class of 56, brought his (Continued on page 8) 7 (Cont. from page 7) niece Carol Parker. Agnes Dunn was representing the Class of 61. (My apologies if I got the Twins mixed up.) They heard Harry sing “April in Paris”, backed by Maestro Ken Meyers, Alan Ginter, Jim Roberson and Charlie Hull. The song allowed GCR Impresaria Paula Dula to point out that ALMOST everybody on the set had a birthday in April – Charlie, Paula (on the 19th); and Jim, Alan and Harry all on April 30! Ken was the odd man out. “Hippo Birdie Two Ewes!” It occurred to the Music Committee that we need to put our Main Stage where our mouth is, and keep those graduates involved. One way is to actually book them on occasion — absolutely not to take away anything from our established musicians who have supported and entertained us for – yeah – forty-odd years, but we’d really like to see you come out and support (and dance to) the young bands scheduled for May and June! Jeff Kreis is also in HOT CITY, along with Jazz Camp Director Bill Dendle. So nice to have Gwenetta Brooks back on deck after several months gone. She sang “Thou Swell” with participation by Paula. Paula helped out on Dennis Cain’s “Change Partners and Dance” by throwing in a few cha-cha steps with Dennis. “Jay Casl, also back after an absence, sang “Witchcraft,” and T Jackson reminded us that “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most.” Speaking of Education, Samantha Mello said Professor Daniel Jonas assigned STJS as homework for her Music Appreciation class. Friend Ricardo Ramirez came along. We haven’t seen Scotty Harper for a month or three, so I had my stringer track him down. He said he’s fine, just a little creaky in the bones, but being 92 will do that to you. He said he’s playing a couple of times a month at the Mission Oaks Rec. District. Visit morpd.com Two songs from Porgy and Bess!! Kate Rees reminded us that “There’s a Boat That’s Leaving Soon for New York,” and Tressa Dahlberg (talk about somebody we haven’t seen for a while!) sang “Summertime.” Jackie Clausson sang “Romancing the Blues.” Alan Ginter (“Lulu’s Back in Town”) was just back from a 5-day spell with the Dean-O-Holics. Larry Sikorski was just about to ease into “Birth of the Blues” when Charlie had to leave for his bass duties with Lipskin, so Parker Weis took over the reeds for the last few numbers in the Vocal Set. Before he left, Charlie demonstrated the most graceful way to cover a loss of memory when he sang, with perfect timing, “when you left, you broke my heart, because I never thought we’d part, some other words go here, you will hear me say, Baby Won’t you Please Come Home.” We also heard from Paula, Jane Reinmuth, Pat Kennedy, Bev Ludlow, Clint Ritchie and Claude Purcell. Unless somebody snuck in when my back was turned, Paula ran the entire day with only one trumpet player. Jack Mootz led Set 1 from the trombone chair, with Lockwood and Tanko on reeds, Lindskoog on piano, Jack Scott on drums, DuVall on vocal, and Dave Metz and Pearl Nicolino on banjos. Set 2 had Mootz, Tanko, Lockwood, Ruggieri, Sieber and Laveroni. Set 4 was led by Jay Paulus, with Lockwood, Weis, Kaiser (on piano), Poffinbarger, Sieber and Bellacera. The sole GCR trumpeter was Eric Treadwell, who led the TNT band for GCR Set 5. Olivia Flournoy, Parker Weis, Duncan McElman, Jackson Stafford, Simon and Gabriel Anusczczyk, Timmy Voet and Joanna Koford. They are improving by the song thanks to Bob Williams and the STJS Education Programs. Fabulous slap bass pro Zack Sapunor was once upon a time also enmeshed in said STJS Education system. So, when he recently received his Gold Card, he said it was “kind of a big deal” for him. Congratulations. Zack is with HOT CITY, our GUEST ARTIST for May. Read the cover story, but let me add a word or two: We have spent the last forty-odd years talking about preserving OKOM, and passing the torch to the young musicians. 8 Sophia Garcia is an Elk but was at Jazz Sunday for the first time and enjoying herself. Sydni Brown and Jack Melton were at STJS courtesy of Groupon. The Masters was causing some small amount of distraction in the GCR, at least for Mike and Cathy Pleschner. Bob Williams said he likes to watch golf, “when it’s good,” and Augusta certainly met that standard this year! This is SO cool: Joseph Matthew said he got STJS admission as a present from “Ashley and Melissa” for his February birthday. He was enjoying himself, and I think there’s a good possibility he’ll bring his sax on his next visit. Nice to welcome Yolanda McDonald. Al Palermo and sister Connie Ezkowitz (she was Ben Fowlkes’ friend) were having a blast. And Margi Borsi was enjoying herself, for sure. Jack Titus said he played jazz 30 years ago. He was studying at Southern Methodist University, but became a “draft dodger.” (Either a bad thing or a good thing – REALLY depended on where you stood.) Jack said the Elk’s Club is his favorite place. Linda Champion is a MOVIE STAR, and she’s bring Ken along with her. I ran across Linda on Access Sacramento (okay, a TV STAR). She was reading a fairy story, which she wrote. Ken was providing gentle accompaniment. Keep an eye out, maybe it will come around again. Oh, and Burt Wilson’s lecture series, Ancient Wisdom for the 21st Century, is in another cycle on Access. Check it out; very interesting. Mather Field Rd. Straw Hat Pizza will feature Calamity Jazz Band from Oregon on May 13, followed by Crescent Katz, Smart Fellers (yeah, yeah, it’s a Spoonerism) and then Cell Block 7. Put Midtown Stomp on your calendar for May 27 – the full complement of Au Brothers will be there. Element Brass Band has a concert in the (Cesar Chavez) Park on May 29. These will help you wind down from Jubilee! And to gear UP? BanjoRama is at Lionsgate Hotel (McClellan AFB) May 15, 16 and 17. All of the Next Generation sites are FREE of charge to the general public. There are four sites: Delta King Dock (alongside the historic Delta King Riverboat) and Round Table Pizza (downstairs and below street level on K St.) and at the Downtown Plaza Piazza (in front of Macy’s) plus the open stage by the Pony Express Rider statue in Old Sac on 2nd Street. This is where tomorrow’s jazz musicians develop their performance talents after learning about trad jazz at school and via STJS jazz education programs, including mentorship in the Tailgate Room during our monthly Jazz Sundays. The Festival annually presents over a dozen groups of young people (high school age and younger) as part of fulfilling the STJS mission to preserve and promote classic American jazz, and develop a new generation of musicians to play it. Please stop by these sites and give these bands your time and attention. They will appreciate it, and you will enjoy the great music! “Up Close & Personal” Save the Date for Bria!
