Instead of speaking of Dickens’ Spirits of the Past, Present and Yet To Come, the Ringing Link 2014, entitled A Dickens of a Ring, will feature Christmas music of the Past (pre-19th century), Present (in this case, the 19th century Victorian Era), and Yet to Come (20th and 21st centuries). If you are a history buff, you will enjoy all things being planned to reflect the glorious age of the Victorian Era. Queen Victoria reigned from 1837-1901 and Dickens wrote extensively throughout her reign. So what better place to have RL 2014 but at the Victoria Inn! From the President... tion of new Directors, the appointment of officers, and the staffing of committees. 127 days and counting!! As I write this, that is the number of days before Tribute: Back to the Future opens in London. I can hardly wait! Even though I have attended many bell festivals, I still look forward to OGEHR’s festival as if it was the first time: the anticipation of being in the middle of that massed sound, looking forward to greeting my ringing friends, mini-concerts, the crazy pace, and loads of fun. Of course, this year’s event opens with a concert by the Raleigh Ringers. I have been lucky enough to see them perform live on 3 different occasions, once travelling 5 hours there and back in the same day to hear them in Chautauqua, NY. Yes, call me crazy (and the other 5 friends I took with me!) Please encourage any of your friends or relatives to get to that concert: they won’t be sorry. I know they are very excited about their Canadian Premiere just as we are thrilled to be the ones to host it. And the Saturday night Massed Concert is also “notto-be missed”. * * WE N EED YO U * * Serving on a committee of OGEHR gives you an opportunity to have a say in the activities of the organization. The Nominating Committee will be contacting some people over the next few weeks to see if they might be interested in becoming involved in new ways. If you have ideas that you would like to see implemented (new workshops, Area coffee meetings, OGEHR Facebook page), let us know. VISIT www.ogehr.ca to find the list of committees and positions that are available. Even if you only have one hour a month, you can play a role. This is YOUR organization and we want to include you and your ideas. Call your Area Representative or any OGEHR Board member – we look forward to hearing from you. Susan CarscaddenMifsud OGEHR President The arrival of the festival brings to mind other rituals, not the least of which is the OGEHR Annual meeting and the elec- Notes from the Editor This is the final time that I get to add a few words to ponder to the pages of the newsletter. After more than 13 years, I am sorry to have to give up editing the newsletter. I hope the readers have enjoyed my modest efforts, and I look forward to seeing the new directions that the newsletter will be taking with someone else at the helm. Thanks for everything. heather keith, Editor Clapper Chatter -2- February 2013 Excitement is building as we look ahead to the upcoming OGEHR Festival “Tribute: Back to the Future”. 2013 Festival Almost 400 people and 43 choirs are already registered to participate in this Festival, to be held in London, ON, at Western University from May 23 – 25, 2013. In weekly sessions, students of all ages gain concentrated knowledge in their particular area of interest. And, while the camp's name speaks of its foundation in music, it really includes much, much more. Dance, creative writing, painting, and drawing are only a few of the unique subject offerings you will discover at IMC. A staff of 150 artist-teachers, internationally noted guest conductors, and outstanding clinicians from the United States, Canada, and Europe provide instruction to students from around the world. Campers have the opportunity to work and play with their peers in a challenging and relaxed setting. Lasting friendships are formed - memories, music, and enough creative summer magic to last a lifetime. Harmony resides not only in music. Harmony abounds in the INTERNATIONAL MUSIC CAMP's natural setting. Beautiful tree-lined paths and brightly colored flowers, help complement the artistic endeavors of IMC student campers. Located in the unique International Peace Garden straddling the border between the United States and Canada, the INTERNATIONAL MUSIC CAMP provides a picturesque setting for learning. 4th Session July 7-13 Handbells - Grade 5-12 7th Session (Adult) July 27-30 Handbells - Adult All fees are payable in US dollars. Classic Bronze, an advanced massed ringing event, will be held in Edmonton, from Thursday afternoon, July 4 through Sunday afternoon, July 7. Classic Bronze will feature advanced level 3/4/5 music and is seeking ringers capable of reading level 3 and performing level 5 music. Classic Bronze’s guest conductor for 2013 will be William Payn. He is in constant demand as a handbell clinician and festival conductor. Payn has conducted in four national festivals and numerous area festivals, as well as for the International symposium in New Mexico for the Handbell Musicians of America. In 1988, he traveled to Japan, where he served as clinician and guest conductor for the Handbell Ringers of Japan and the ringers at Kwasnsei Gakuin University. Interested ringers will need to send the application form, the reference form attesting to the ringer's skill and musicianship, as well as a registration fee. Application materials are available in .pdf format on the Classic Bronze web page at http://www.classicbronze.org. For details, contact Cathy Koski at [email protected]. Repertoire will be available for purchase in March.
