Blast from the Past
The Sixties...
Fads
Even though the 60’s were a very turbulent time, the decade of the Fall Out Shelter, Cold
War and Vietnam. It also produced some pretty groovy things!
Do you remember GO-GO boots and mini skirts along with the Fab Four and their mop top
haircuts.? Oohh Beatle boots! Paul, John, George and… Ringo!
Groovy Man
This then morphed into the Hippies and their great sense of style with the peace symbol,
and flared bottom pants to go with that groovy tie dye t-shirt. And to top it all off…. Love
Beads.
The pocket transistor radio came on the market to listen to the one or two AM radio
stations.
For the kids came GI Joe, Legos and Hot Wheels just as dad was buying the new fangled
Philishave battery operated shaver. He was also buying the Samsonite Attaché case for
work and his state of the art writing utensil... the Parker 61 of course! This ink pen
sometimes blew up in his pocket so mom with her new Viking Wringer Washer and a box
of BAB-O Institutional Power Active Cleanser Bleach went to work to get that stain out!
Mom had her new Jackie Kennedy hairstyle and a can of Aqua Net hairspray. Her hair
didn’t move for a week. This did however give her more time to bake... from scratch.
YUM!
As most moms were career housewives, after she sent her family happily on their way,
mom cleaned the house, did the laundry, bought groceries and then made time to watch
her favorite soap “ Love Is A Many Splendored Thing”.
After that she made dinner, did dishes, tucked her family into bed , wrapped her hair in
a sleep net and started all over again the next day.

The Seventies
Fads
One of the 70s fads were Pet Rocks, which came in their own cages with a
funny little instruction book about their care and feeding.
Everyone seemed to want to analyze their mood by wearing mood rings
around class and at the arcade.
While some were wearing leisure suits, others were in their birthday suits.
Streaking was one of the big fads of the 70s, from streakers on the Academy
Awards to the high school prom.
Thanks to movies like Smokey and the Bandit, CB radios found their way into
cars and everyone seemed to be crowding the airwaves with a big “10-4 good
buddy”.
Truckers didn’t take too kindly to the invasion of their airwaves, but they did
like the “Keep On Truckin’” shirts that were a big 70s fad.
The CB craze even found its way into another 70s fad, song parodies. There was
“The Streak” by Ray Stevens, “Kung Fu Fighting and “Convoy”, the latter a nod
to CBs.
If you enjoyed music and wanted to be really hip, you had an 8-track player in
your room or your car, black light posters. If you were real lucky you also had a
lava lamp and a waterbed in your room.
Other 70s fads included the brief return of the Duncan Yo-Yo, Big Wheels, Hot
Wheels, air hockey and foosball.

The Eighties
Hair and Fads
Boom Boxes
This oversized radio was popular with the youth of the early and mid-eighties because they played music
so loud, you could hear them from a 100 yards away. They eventually came with dual cassette and CD
players and used 8 "D" cell batteries to power the big speakers. Some had a special Bass Boost button that
would make the boom boxes even louder and more annoying to most who could hear them. This fad is still
popular with some young people because the new boom boxes come with MP3 players.
Break Dancing
Remember the parachute pants and cardboard boxes that dancers would gyrate themselves on? Break
dancing seems so different from all other kinds of dancing that the first question people ask when they see
it is: "Where did these kids learn to dance like that?" In 1969, when James Brown was getting down with
his big hit "Get on the Good Foot" the Hustle was the big dance style of the day. When he preformed his
hit, he did the kind of dance you'd expect James Brown to do. High Energy. This eventually, evolved into
break dancing.
Goatee Beards
Goatee beards really joined the mainstream, and no longer just for bikers, wrestlers, and Satan.
The Mullet\
Business up front & Party in the back
Smurfs
Blue elflike creatures, dwelling happily in the forest. Creatures with names like Jokey, Greedy, and Brainy
Smurf. The went through adventures, sought advice from Papa Smurf and found themselves captivated by
the perky Smurfette, the only female in the clan. During Smurf Mania, they out sold Star Wars, Garfield,
Snoopy, Annie and Mickey Mouse.
