For this sale we have a particularly strong line up of young bulls as well as a proven herd sire. The bulls have an exciting range of overseas bloodlines with something to suit every breeder to be found among them. As well there is a select range of future breeding females on offer. For the serious breeders among you there is the offer of the pick from two, two of the newly imported bloodline of a top British sire, Bowlands Zeus. Zeus’s Zeus’ EBV equivalent in Britain for 200 and 400 day Growth, Muscle Depth and Beef Value are all in the top 2% of the breed. For those wishing to increase the beef values in their herd this is a prime opportunity. If you are a first time purchaser you will automatically omatically receive a complimentary Associate Membership for one year which entitles you to three issues of our Association newsletter and a copy of the Sale catalogue for next year. I would like to thank those breeders who have entered animals – without you there would not be a sale. Graeme Evans President 3 ORIGINS OF THE BREED Red Poll cattle were developed over a period of time from the merging of two English breeds; the polled Suffolk Dun, famed for their yield of milk and the quality of the butter produced from it; and the horned Norfolk Red, described as “a thriving, hardy breed, fattening as freely and finishing as highly at three years as other cattle did at four or five”. The type was well established in the early 1800’s with stock shown at the Norfolk Agricultural Society in 1808. The official merging of the breeds happened in 1846. Red Poll cattle were first imported to New Zealand in 1898 by Sir Heaton Rhodes of Tai Tapu, Canterbury; followed in 1904 by Armstrong Bros, Akitio Station and in 1907 by MH Strachan, Kowai Station, Gisborne. As a dual purpose breed they were very popular on early farms for providing income from their calf and milk sales, thus enabling further farm development to take place. Latterly, the trend has been away from milking to beef production, although a good calf still requires a good milk supply. They are renowned for being efficient converters of lower quality feed to milk and meat. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE The Sale will be conducted under the NZ Stock & Station Agents’ Association Conditions of Sale as will be displayed. The description of the livestock in the Sale has been supplied by the vendors. They are responsible for its accuracy. Terms will be strictly cash before taking delivery of any animal unless prior arrangements are made with the Auctioneers. Accounts not paid within 14 days of sale shall bear interest at current rate per annum from the date of purchase. 4 ALL BULLS GUARANTEED FOR EIGHT MONTHS FROM DATE OF PURCHASE. ANY BREEDING DEFECTS INCURRED IN THAT PERIOD MUST BE ACCOMPANIED WITH A VETERINARIAN’S CERTIFICATE. ARBITRATION TO BE SETTLED BY THE AUCTIONEERS. INSURANCE It is strongly recommended that all purchases be insured for a 12 month period against risk of transit, mortality and incapability of service or breeding as a result of accident, sickness and disease. See page 25 for Extended Conditions of Sale Buyers are advised to read this before purchasing stock. HELMSMAN SYSTEM Procedure: Each lot is written on a white board. Each lot is subject to an initial minimum bid as specified on the Helmsman board. The Auctioneer reserves the right to specify minimum bids from time to time. On registering, buyers will be issued with a number and the buyer actions his/her bid by completing: A) Lot number; B) Amount of bid; C) Buyer number During the sale buyers can continuously present completed cards to the Auction clerk, who records them and has the bid and buyer’s number recorded on the board, under the appropriate lot. Sale Bids can be lodged 15 minutes prior to the start of the bidding period. 5 The clock will start for an initial 15 minute countdown. At the end of the 15 minute bidding, the clock will be reset for a further 2 minute bidding period. If there are no bids during the 2 minute bidding period the sale is complete. If there is bidding during the 2 minute period the clock is automatically restarted for a further 2 minutes on a continual basis. The Auctioneer may reduce the bidding period to 1 minute and eventually 30 seconds by announcement. Prior to completion of the Helmsman, the vendor has the right to place his reserve bid on any lot offered. When no more bids are received during any of the bidding periods after the initial 15 minutes, the sale will be over. The highest bidder on each lot will be the successful buyer, subject to the bid exceeding the reserve price. All written bids are binding. No bid can be retracted. Conditions: Selling under the Terms and Conditions set down by the NZ Stock Agents Association. Payment in cash at the completion of sale unless arrangements have been made with the Auctioneers.
