New Haven has to offer.

Ellen Barrett is known worldwide for her
innovative workout videos, including
Prevention magazine’s best-selling Flat
Belly Diet series. She also has a longrunning Fit TV show, All-Star Workouts.
A 2010 graduate of The Institute for
Integrative Nutrition (IIN), she has
emerged as the go-to expert for women
and weight loss issues. Ellen lives in New
Haven and is the proud parent of son
Luca, a Leila Day Kindergartner.
LD O.K., so let’s get to the skinny. As a
fitness instructor with a lot of knowledge
about nutrition, what’s your best weight
loss tip?
EB First, go to bed early and drink at
least 8 cups of water a day. Second, eat a
healthy diet. Third, exercise.

LD Where can I take your next fitness
class?
LD I am surprised exercise ranks third.
EB I write and teach a lot about wellness,
and it can’t just be all about exercise.
Wellness is about forming good living
habits. Taking the “hell” out of “healthy”
and enjoying life is a big part of being
healthy. Ironically, often times, fitness
people have the most “hell” in their lives.
They abide by a fitness life style and diet
that is not sustainable. Forming good living habits is sustainable.
EB The New Haven Free Public Library
(133 Elm Street) has yoga classes for
$5.00 at 1:00 pm every Wednesday.
Every few months there is a different instructor. I will be teaching on Wednesdays
in May and June. The class is in a great
space, you can meet-up with a friend and
it is very affordable.
LD Is there anything you have come to
appreciate about New Haven that you did
not prior to being a parent?
LD How do you form good living habits?
EB New Haven is a great city to form
good living habits – it is such a walkable
city and has a great biking community.
There are also so many family oriented
fitness events – I love the Rock to Rock
bike ride and the New Haven Road Race.
The various weekend CitySeed farmers
markets provide a great opportunity to
buy healthy, fresh food – they even take
FMNP, Senior FMNP coupons, WIC
CVV and SNAP, making good food accessible regardless of your income.
EB Public space! It is so important to
families and kids. Now that I am a
mom, everywhere I go I appreciate the
city’s playgrounds and open areas to run
around. East Rock Park is a favorite.
LD Describe your perfect New Haven
Saturday.
EB Heading to the Wooster Square
playground with my family, then going to
the Wooster Square farmer’s market and
getting to Pepe’s Pizza by 11:45 am, just
before the line starts. I grew up in Upstate
New York where everything was generic,
and good Italian food was the Olive
Garden. I love that everyone in New
Haven is a pizza snob.

LD What attracted you to home rehabilitation, and how did that lead to selling
real estate?
A lifelong resident of the Greater New
Haven area, Betsy Grauer is the owner
of Betsy Grauer Realty, Inc., which she
started as a solo real estate agent in 1981.
Today, Betsy Grauer Realty, Inc. has
grown to have over ten realtors and is the
“go to” residential real estate agency for
New Haven and its surrounding towns.
BG I have always loved architecture, and I
had exposure to construction because my
father was a builder. New Haven has so
many beautiful homes, but by the 1980s,
when I started out, many of those homes
were in need of renovation. At that time,
I thought to myself – “I know building,
I love architecture – I can do this.” So, I
started renovating multi-family homes in
New Haven. I was so proud of my work,
Betsy lives in New Haven with her
husband and is the proud grandparent of
four grandchildren, two of whom (Abigail
Kruger and Benjamin Kruger) are Leila
Day alums.

LD Everybody knows of you as a real
estate agent, but I heard you started your
career as a house buyer yourself. Is that
true?
I would show it off to family and friends,
or, really anyone who was interested.
Before I knew it, I became known as the
person to ask about available New Haven
homes with similar preservation potential.
One day my husband observed, “You
should get your real estate license. You
certainly know New Haven real estate and
refer a lot of business to realtors.” And as
they say, the rest is history.
BG I started my career over thirty-five
years ago buying, renovating, and maintaining older homes in New Haven. I
learned so much about the functionality
of space and the intricacies of structure,
mechanicals and building codes. I also
developed a deep understanding of the
varying housing needs of different buyers.
LD What do you think accounts for the
ever-increasing popularity of living in the
city of New Haven?

and use space. No two families utilize
or decorate a home in the exact same
way. My job never gets boring.
BG I think there is a rededication
to living in places with sidewalks.
Sidewalks speak of a community: kids
playing and riding bikes, and for adults
sidewalks mean there are destinations
you can get to with ease – whether that
is walking to a store, bringing your
kids to school, seeing your neighbors
or visiting a local park, and so on.
People do not want to spend time in
a car; they want things close-by and
they want to have multiple interactions
within their immediate community.
LD When you meet people who are
new to New Haven, what is their biggest surprise about the city?
BG I meet many people who come to
New Haven from major cities, and I
think what surprises them is the ease
at which one can become part of the
community here. Because this is in part
a university town, there is a vibrancy to
New Haven, and neighbors are more
attuned to welcoming new people. I
also think people new to New Haven
are surprised at how cultured the city
is. The amount of theater, music and
fine arts is a wonderful and appreciated
bonus that many do not know about
prior to living here.
LD Would it be fair to say you have
been inside almost every house in the
East Rock neighborhood close to a
dozen times? I mean, that part of your
job must get boring, right?
BG Definitely not boring! That is what
I love about selling real estate in New
Haven – whether it is East Rock or
any neighborhood in the area – is that
so many homes were built between
1880 through 1940, and they have
such character. There is also a wonderful diversity of homes. You can have
grand mansions on one block and the
next block over are perfect bungalow
homes. In that same neighborhood
there will also be condos, multi-family
homes, single family homes, multigenerational homes – everything. It
makes New Haven a unique housing
market and allows for a wide diversity
of prices within neighborhoods. I also
enjoy seeing the ways people interpret
LD Where might we find you when
you are not working?
BG That’s easy – with my grandchildren. I am so lucky both my children
settled in the area and all four of my
grandchildren live no farther than a
few miles from me. We love walking
everywhere – to The Peabody Museum,
The Yale Art Gallery, The British
Museum, the markets on Orange
Street, out to dinner, etc. I have the
most wonderful conversations with my
grandchildren when walking about and
exploring New Haven – it is so much
fun and also lets me appreciate the city
on a whole new level. Continued

The College Access Program The purpose of our College Access Program is to provide more equitable access of college preparatory
resources and services to a broad range of students and their families who have a history of being deprived

The College Savings Program
is an Individual Development Account (IDA) Initiative geared to support low-income families in New Haven
save for post-secondary education. Financial education, asset specific training, peer support meetings and
