Mazal Tov!
...to all of us!
Dear Friends,
I am tremendously excited to announce that
on June 23rd, after careful and thoughtful
deliberation, the Har Shalom Board of
Directors voted unanimously to continue
Rabbi Raskin’s spiritual leadership of our
congregation for the next ten years. Our
clergy, congregants, and staff have all
collaborated to make Har Shalom a community
of which we should be very proud. Over the last
three years, Rabbi Raskin has provided enthusiastic,
Tisha B’Av
inspiring, leadership. We look forward to a wonderful
future together, and to an amazing celebration of
Har Shalom’s 50th Anniversary.
Mazal Tov to Rabbi Raskin, Sari, Mia, Nessa & Ezra...
and to all of us!
Sincerely,
Cindy Fishman

From the Rabbi
Dearest Friends...
“
With summer now upon us, I hope you
are enjoying a more leisurely pace of
life, and perhaps even a vacation or two!
Notwithstanding the summer slowdown,
in just a few short months, our highest
membership season will be here.
Statistics show that most people shop for
and join synagogues in the months and
weeks leading up to the high holidays.
Rabbi
It is also, by the way, when they tend
Adam J. Raskin
to resign their memberships. The Har
Shalom staff, clergy, and membership
volunteers pursue every possible lead,
follow-up assiduously with those who have expressed even an
inkling of interest, and work hard to connect with prospective
members. But we can’t do it without you!
You are our connection to a much wider pool of future Har Shalom
members. You may also know of members who are disaffected
or unsatisfied. Consider yourselves ambassadors, recruiters,
missionaries, customer service representatives, salespeople,
whatever! Please talk up Har Shalom and all the positive momentum
we are experiencing. Let us know if there are people we can reach
out to or who would appreciate some extra TLC.
Our efforts to attract more people to Har Shalom are not for the
purposes of lining our coffers or bragging about how many families
we have on our roster. The purpose of membership recruitment is
that we believe we have important, relevant, life-changing Torah
to share; because we have a warm, loving congregation and a
unique conduit to God, spirituality, and Jewish tradition to offer
this community.
If you believe, as I do, that Har Shalom occupies a special niche
of our Jewish community; and that our approach to Jewish life
...we believe we have important, relevant,
life-changing Torah to share; because we
have a warm, loving congregation and a
unique conduit to God, spirituality, and
Jewish tradition to offer this community.
is unique and profound, then please join me in welcoming other
people to experience it. Help me and the Har Shalom staff bring
Torah and vibrant Jewish life to people who are searching for a
connection and a community. If you know a neighbor, a friend, a
relative, or a co-worker who is seeking a congregation to affiliate
with, I hope you will direct them to Har Shalom. Don’t be deterred
if they say they’re not “Conservative,” or they are intermarried,
or they aren’t observant, etc. We welcome everyone who wants
to explore Jewish life with us! I am happy to call anyone; meet
anyone for a cup of coffee; even invite them to my home for a
Shabbas meal. However, I need you to be my partner in this
sacred outreach.
Finally, I want to express my deep appreciation to the Board of
Directors and to the entire congregation for the confidence you
have placed in me as your Rav. I am excited for all that we will
accomplish together as we look forward to the next ten years.
May we be blessed to rejoice in many s’mahot (happy occasions),
and to share in all of life’s sacred moments together.
Thank you dear friends... warm wishes for a rejuvenating summer!
Remember, we’re open all year long!
L’shalom,
Rabbi Raskin

From The Hazzan
A bar/bat-mitzvah is a community
announcement. The Torah service
on Saturday morning has many
announcements: we hear about
those who are ill, and pray for them;
we remember those who have a
yahrtseit; we meet new couples about
to be married; new babies, just being
named. We celebrate anniversaries,
and birthdays, and among those
announcements is the one that tells
Hazzan
us that a youngster is ready to perform
Henrique Ozur Bass all the mitzvot. The community is an
intrinsic part of this announcement.
And, yet, I am traveling to Israel this August, with 4 Har Shalom
kids and one adult, all of them are announcing their becoming bar/
bat-mitzvah at the Western Wall, in Jerusalem.
A bar/bat-mitzvah celebration during a trip to Israel trumps the
announcement in our own community. First, because, before we
go to Israel, the whole group will be at Har Shalom for services to
receive an aliyah, announcing – at the proper time – these kids’
becoming B’nai-Mitzvah. Additionally, a trip to Israel puts the idea
of bar/bat-mitzvah in a historic context. You walk the same places
where our forefathers walked; eat the olives from the same trees
that our ancestors used to make the Hanukah oil; and witness the
same sights that inspired our prophets.
And it is not only about the past: Israel, with its technological
advances, instills in each one of us a pride to be part of this people.
A bar/bat-mitzvah service in Israel is framed by our identity, by our
pride, and by our hope that this land will continue to flourish in
peace.

It is too late to sign up to this summer’s trip. However, this is the
right time to be thinking about next summer’s family trip to Israel.
Rabbi Raskin will be leading Har Shalom’s trip to Israel between
June 15, 2015 and June 26, 2015. You got the postcard; now, it
is time to make your reservation. Next year in Jerusalem… with

From the Director of Congregational Learning
The week after school ended, the
Kesher class headed to the Jersey
Shore. . . to help rebuild homes
damaged in Hurricane Sandy. We
went to the town of Sea Bright in
Monmouth County. Sea Bright is
located on a narrow peninsula
and experienced terrible flooding
during the hurricane. For example,
both the town’s library and its
favorite “watering hole” were
Rabbi
literally swept into the sea. Sea
Deborah B. Cohen
Bright has 1400 households, and
100 families still have not been able
to move home because they do not have the resources to repair
their homes. Through the American Jewish Society for Service, we
were connected to Sea Bright Rising, an non-profit dedicated to
rebuilding the town. We worked on two homes, doing everything
from hauling trash to putting up drywall and painting to installing a
soffit. The Kesher students had a terrific time. We were joined by
two students from Adat Shalom, making it a true community event.
Here is what some of have to say:
We thank the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington for grant
money to help with our transportation costs and to Rabbi Raskin
for supporting our trip through his discretionary fund. A huge thank
you also to Ken Popkin, who took time from work to chaperone.
I had a blast on the Kesher trip! It was a great experience that
I would recommend to everyone. The trip was very rewarding
and a ton of fun!
- Adele Gilman
This trip truly opened my eyes to the construction business.
Additionally, I experienced the joy of directly helping others
through the rebuilding of homes demolished by Hurricane
Sandy.
- Michael Sherr
It was a great way to help others in need while making new
friends and having tons of fun at the beach.
- Jacob Mayl
It was an interesting experience in New Jersey. Each house
had its own story for its repairs.
- Garrett Goltz
Worth doing again and again and again.

Outgoing Har Shalom USY
President’s Address
As Delivered by Emily Dahl
I really wanted to open elections with an inspirational quote about
life, so obviously I sat down in front of the computer and went
to BrainyQuote.com. I searched and searched, but I couldn’t
find anything that was really inspiring that wasn’t overly cliché.
However, I accidently stumbled across this leadership quote, and
I instantly fell in love with it. It reads, “Leadership cannot really be
taught, it can only be learned.” Former ITT Corporation President
Harold S. Geneen said exactly what I wanted to say to all of you
running for chapter board this year.
Board members are not expected to have years of experience
being a leader before they step into their first board meeting. In
fact, most board members don’t have any experience being a
leader until they are elected to their position. This is what is so
wonderful about USY. It is a place that offers anyone and everyone
who has never gotten the opportunity to be a leader the chance
to step up and learn. Am I going to tell you that as soon as you get
on board it is going to be smooth sailing and you will automatically
understand what to do as a leader after one meeting? No I’m not;
I’m telling you the exact opposite.
I have been on chapter board for three years, and at every single
event and board meeting, I learned something new. From how to
plan lounge nights to how collaborate with others, being on Har
Shalom USY Chapter Board has taught me leadership skills that I
will use every day of my life. In fact, you all have already learned
something about leadership from chapter board, although you
don’t even know it yet. By sending in your applications, you have
already demonstrated some exceptional leadership. You are about
to step up here and say, “Hi Har Shalom USY, I want to lead you
next year.” That takes a lot of courage and I look forward to hearing
each of you speak and present your ideas for the upcoming year.
6 • The Tablet
Although I won’t be here to see these incredible ideas pan out,
I know I will hear great things about each and every one of you.
Ok, before we officially start elections, I want to say a few things
about my time in USY. I knew that I had always wanted to do things
on a chapter level, like plan events and be on board. However, I
hadn’t ever expected or planned to go to any regional events, that
is until a certain senior chapter president convinced me to. Yes, I
of all people was afraid to go to a regional convention. Well, long
story short, he called me the night before my freshman spring and
told me not to worry. He said I would make the best friends I would
ever have; he was right. That convention opened a whole new
world of friendships and experiences that I never would’ve had
without that conversation.
Ever since he called me, I vowed that I would make other teens
see USY as a special place where the greatest friendships are
formed. This is the task I leave for all of you. Not only do I want
you to take full advantage of USY; I want you to get others to as
well. Bring that friend to the messy games lounge night and get
covered in all types of goo. Take them to Kings Dominion Day and
help them make new friends. Call that freshman who is scared
to attend a regional convention and reassure them that they will
have a wonderful time. You never know how much that phone call
can mean. I know that each of you will influence this chapter in so
many ways and I cannot wait to see what you have in store. I know
I said I didn’t want to use a cliché quote, but I am going to end with
one anyway. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your
shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re
on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy
who’ll decide where to go.” Dr. Seuss is right. You are all in charge
of the future of this chapter now. I will miss Har Shalom USY a lot,
but I know that the chapter is in great hands. Thank you so much
for an incredible four years.
L’Shalom,
Emily Dahl

Saul & Marlyn Schepartz 301-299-7087,

Laurie Freed | [email protected]
The Daytimers will be starting its fall schedule with two very
exciting programs!
Theater J
Friday, September 12, at 12 pm
Theater J is starting its new season with YENTL, based on the
book “Yentl the Yeshiva Boy”, by Isaac Bashevis Singer, with new
music and lyrics by Jill Sobule. Our matinee performance will be on
Friday, September 12, at 12 pm. Tickets are $15.00. Because of the
early September date of this performance, it is important to make
arrangements as soon as possible. For further information, contact
Marlyn Schepartz.
Daytimers Forum
Wednesday, September 17, at 12 pm
The first Daytimers Forum will be September 17, 2014, from 12:00
to 2:00pm. The speaker will be Professor Jerry Muller, Chairman
of the Department of History at Catholic University. His topic will
be “Capitalism and the Jews”, the subject of a book he published
a few years ago. In his book, Professor Muller explores many
economic, social and other complex issues throughout Jewish
history. One of these issues includes the success that Jews
achieved in the careers and trades to which they were limited
because of anti-semitism, and how this success in itself may have
resulted in jealousy and additional anti-semitism that has persisted
to the present time.
We look forward to a good turnout at both of these events.
The premiere show of the newly formed Peace Mountain Players
[Har Shalom] will debut this September, 2014, with the production
of the play Collected Stories. In collaboration with professional
theatre artists and Har Shalom members, this exciting endeavor
has been percolating for a little more than a year. It is the
mission of Peace Mountain to present to the community plays,
and playwrights, dealing with relevant Jewish themes, issues and
experiences. It is the theatre companies’ hope, that with your
support as a patron and volunteer, Peace Mountain Players will
be a continuing feature of Congregation Har Shalom and grow to
become an integral part of the synagogue and the greater Jewish
community.
The play, Collected Stories, by Tony and Pulitzer Award winning
playwright Donald Margulies, is the provocative tale of prominent
short story writer Professor Ruth Steiner and her protégé Lisa
Morrison; two women from extremely different milieus. Their
relationship explodes when Steiner realizes that Morrison, in her
first novel, has cannibalized her mentor’s life experiences, to wit
her youthful, shattering affair with poet Delmore Schwartz. Set in
Steiner’s Greenwich Village apartment, Margulies’ sharply written
and incisive dialogue is both literate and intellectually stimulating.
“Margulies has created an authentic, detailed and insular
world... This is probably [his] best play to date.” - N.Y. Post
Needless to say, “it takes a village” to produce a play and establish
a theatre company. Theatres throughout the country need help
backstage and financially. If you would like to support Peace
Mountain Players please contact Laurie Freed, Artistic Director
and Har Shalom member. All proceeds of this play will go to
Congregation Har Shalom thereby benefiting the synagogue as
well as Peace Mountain Players. The members of Peace Mountain
Players would like to “thank you” in advance for your support!

“Bingo with a Twist”
Men’s Club Entertains Seniors with “Bingo with a Twist”
Men’s Club members Mark Berlin and Bernie Lubran have
been conducting monthly Shabbat Services for residents of the
Brightview Assisted Living facility in Rockville since 2013. On the
evening of June 9, Mark, Bernie, and Elise Ward, a volunteer
from the community who has joined the team, entertained
residents with a Bingo game with an twist. Instead of using the
traditional letters and numbers, Mark developed a version that
uses Jewish themes such as Holidays, Personalities, Foods, etc.
The residents enjoyed playing and each ended winning at least
one game and a prize. Jeannette, a 101 year-old resident and
regular Shabbat participant, thought it was a wonderful idea.
We welcome anyone from Har Shalom who would like to join us
once a month for a Shabbat service or on special occasions such
as Passover, Hanukah, etc.

Announcing the Har Shalom Players 2015 Musical
Showing Saturday night, January 24 and Sunday afternoon, January 25, 2015
On Saturday night, January 24 and Sunday afternoon, January
25, 2015, the Har Shalom Players will be performing SHREK THE
MUSICAL, based on the Oscar® winning DreamWorks film. After
a trial run in Seattle, the original Broadway production opened
in December 2008, and closed after a run of over 12 months
in January 2010. It has since been performed across the US on
national tour, in the UK and in Israel. Most recently, it just completed
a very successful run at Toby’s Dinner Theatre in Columbia, MD.
Auditions
Auditions for SHREK THE MUSICAL will be held on:
• Sunday afternoon, October 5, from 2 – 4 pm
• Monday evening, October 6, from 7 – 9 pm
If callbacks are necessary, it will take place on:
• Tuesday evening, October 7, from 7 – 9:30 pm
SHREK THE MUSICAL brings the hilarious story of everyone’s
favorite ogre to dazzling new life on the stage. In a faraway kingdom
turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre - not
a handsome prince - shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw
in a donkey who won’t shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a
cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits,
and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily,
there’s one on hand...and his name is Shrek. With great songs and
dance routines, SHREK THE MUSICAL is part romance, part twisted
fairy tale and irreverent fun for everyone!
More details about auditions will be included in the September
edition of the Tablet. Questions may be addressed to
[email protected].
