From Jo’burg and Pietermaritzburg
From the N3 approaching Durban take the
turn-off to the N2, North Coast. Follow N2
northwards and take the turn-off signposted Mount
Edgecombe/Umhlanga. Turn right at the traffic lights.
Go under the Millenium Bridge and take the turn-off
signposted M12/Umhlanga Rocks Drive. Turn left onto
the M12. Go straight through the first turning circle, and
turn right at the second turning circle. Continue straight until
you reach Umhlanga.

H
ello and welcome to the sixth edition of the
Umhlanga & Surrounds Visitors’ Guide.
I hope you enjoy all Umhlanga has to offer
and leave richer for your visit.
‘Umhlanga’ means ‘Place of Reeds’ in the Zulu
language, so ‘Umhlanga Rocks’ roughly translates to
‘Place of reeds and rocks’. A visit to the Umhlanga beach
or our Lagoon Nature Reserve will show you why this name is appropriate.
Umhlanga is the most popular beach resort holiday destination on the east coast of South Africa, located just 16km
north of the busy port city of Durban. In recent years Umhlanga has grown from a sleepy little village into the most sought
after holiday destination anywhere in southern Africa.
We also have the new King Shaka International Airport on our doorstep, just slightly inland from the small coastal
hamlet of La Mercy and approximately 12km along the N2 to Umhlanga. This new airport can handle the largest aircraft in
existence today, and has a passenger capacity of 7.5 million per annum that can be expanded to over 35 million in coming
years. So domestic and international tourism into this region is guaranteed for the foreseeable future.
And it’s no surprise why people flock here in such large numbers. Long stretches of idyllic beaches lined with palm trees
and barrelling waves coming off the warm Indian ocean, all combined with a rich cultural history of east meets west meets
Africa. Mix all of this with excellent restaurants, well priced and varied accommodation, top class conference facilities and
world-class shopping, and there is something for everyone in Umhlanga. In fact, there is so much to do that you’re bound
to return at the first opportunity!

Umhlanga’s main beach on a sunny weekend

U
mhlanga Rocks is perched on the edge of the Indian
Ocean, and its beaches offer excellent swimming
and surfing within walking distance of the Umhlanga
village centre.
There are close to 300 days of sunshine a year, and the
water is warm enough to swim throughout summer and winter.
Umhlanga’s beaches are protected by shark nets and welltrained professional lifeguards are stationed at the swimming
beaches along the Umhlanga coastline. The 2.7km O’Connor
Promenade was recently upgraded, and runs from Durban View
Park to Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. The promenade is a
favourite for walkers and runners, and is dotted with restaurants,
takeaways, ablution facilities and ice cream sellers. The boat
launch site at Granny’s Pool allows visitors to get out onto the

water to fish or dolphin/whale watch.
To the north, Umdloti is set against green hills and lush
vegetation. It has some of the best beaches in the area, with a
rock enclosed tidal pool and a wide lagoon. There is excellent
fishing off the rocks and safe swimming. Further along the coast
are Westbrook and Tongaat. These beaches are quiet and offer
great swimming and surfing, as well as a launching area for
boats.

Bottlenose dolphins can be spotted all year round
Dolphin and whale watching
The waters off Umhlanga are rich with sea life, particularly whales
and dolphins. Pods of bottlenose dolphins can be seen breaching
the water just beyond the breakers and surfing in the waves
year-round, and from July to November each year, humpbacked
whales and southern right whales can be seen all along the coast.
Ocean Ventures launches a number of boat trips every day (weather
dependant) from Granny’s Pool, at Umhlanga’s main beach. After
a short safety briefing, climb aboard their specially-designed Rigid
Inflatable Boat (we recommend you wear a swimming costume, as
you’re likely to get wet) and get comfortable, and hang on for a fast
launch through the surf. The skipper is an expert in seeking out
whales, dolphins, turtles and sea birds, all the while providing

There are a few good dive spots right off Umhlanga. The T-Barge,
Lighthouse Reef, the Trawler of Fontao and Dolphin Reef are
excellent dive spots, attracting everything from moray eels to
tropical fish. The best diving conditions are to be found in the
winter months.
One of the best snorkelling spots in the area is at the
northern end of Umdloti’s Beach Road. A line of rocks encloses
an enormous tidal pool, home to large cowries, crayfish and a
variety of tropical fish.
Learn all about sharks
The KZN Sharks Board (KZNSB) in Umhlanga has a display
hall with life-size replicas of sharks, fish and rays, and offers
a 25-minute presentation on the work the KZNSB does and
the importance of sharks in the marine ecosystem. You can
also experience a 20-minute shark dissection, where you can
learn about – and smell – the internal machinery of the ocean’s
fiercest predator. The KZNSB services shark nets, which provide
protection against shark attacks at 38 localities.

G
arsons Expeditions offers a comprehensive
daylong tour of the Inanda Heritage Route and
other interesting sites in the Umhlanga area.
Greg Garson has a deep passion for local history,
and while he takes you on the route he will give you an
oral account of the last 400 years of South Africa’s history,
providing context for the struggles and achievements of the
local luminaries. By the end of the tour, you will know more
about South Africa’s history than most South Africans.
The first stop is King Shaka Museum at KwaDukuza (Stanger).
Displays and exhibits thoroughly document the history of the
people of southern Africa, from iron-age farming communities to
the rise of the Zulu nation and the rule of Shaka, the most famous
Zulu king. You can also visit Shaka’s gravesite and a monument
to him erected by Solomon kaDinuzulu, the Zulu king from 1913
to 1933.
Mahatma Gandhi established the Phoenix Settlement in 1904
after purchasing a farm from a local sugar cane farmer. He lived
here for 21 years, and it’s where he developed his philosophy
of passive resistance, called Satyagraha. Gandhi’s modest
prefabricated home is now a museum dedicated to his life and
teachings.
It’s a short drive to the Ohlange Institute, a school founded in
1900 by John L Dube, first president of the African National Congress.
Visitors to the Institute can see where Nelson Mandela cast his vote

in the first-ever democratic elections in 1994, find out more about
Dube in the museum dedicated to his life and legacy, and pay their
respects to this great man at his gravesite and monument.
The nearby Inanda Seminary, established in 1869, was the first
secondary school founded exclusively for African girls in southern
Africa. The beautiful and highly secure educational environment is a
verdant oasis in the sprawling Inanda Township. The active campus
educates close to four hundred students amongst ten historic
buildings, the oldest being Rev. Daniel Lindley’s mission house,
built in 1858. Many of South Africa’s most powerful and influential
women in government, business and the non-profit world received
their education at this school during the height of Apartheid. The
resident school historian is on call to welcome and host visitors.
Temples and Mosques
There are a number of interesting temples and mosques in the
area. Tongaat is home to the Brake Village Hindu Temple (right)
and the Vishwaroop Temple. The Juggernath Puri Temple is
a national monument and was built in 1920 by the late Pandit
Sirikishan Maharaj in North Indian fashion. The Sri Siva
Soobramaniar Temple hosts one of the country’s largest Kavadi
Festivals.

Horse trails through the Umdloti

O
ne of the best ways to enjoy the quiet scenery of
the north coast is by horseback. Umdloti Beach
Stables offer riding lessons, outrides and top quality
stabling facilities. Beginners and advanced riders
are welcome, and owner Patrice Hardy has a holistic approach to
horse-riding lessons, helping students understand and connect
with their horses. He’ll lead you around the paddock, giving
instructions on posture and technique. Once you’ve gathered the
basic skills, you can go on an outride through the sugar cane
fields and scattered indigenous bush overlooking Umdloti. For
advanced riders there’s the option of going down to the Umdloti
River or to the nature reserve at Umhlanga Lagoon.
Sea kayaking is a rapidly growing sport, and anglers often fish
off paddle skis where they catch dorado and barracuda. The best
shore angling spots are off the rocks at Umdloti and La Mercy.

If you like exploring trails at speed, mountain biking, dirt biking
and quad biking are all offered, from tours to day excursions
to outrides. If you fancy a flip through the air, microlighting,
helicopter flights and skydiving are all offered in the area.

Mount Edgecombe is an upmarket suburb tucked away in the
undulating hills just inland of Umhlanga. Visit Flanders Mall for
exciting restaurants, shops and an art gallery. This vibrant little
town offers two championship golf courses designed to USPGA
specifications. Both courses are challenging but fair, and provide
a very agreeable round of golf.

rom pavement sellers and local crafts to boutique
shopping and malls where everything is on offer,
Umhlanga is a shopping Mecca. Gateway Theatre
of Shopping is the biggest mall in the southern
hemisphere, and over two million people visit it every month,
thanks to a wide range of shops, restaurants for every taste
and fun activities, such as a climbing rock, skatepark, funfair
and cinemas. La Lucia Mall is a lovely suburban mall with a
relaxed atmosphere and big brand stores.
An array of local arts and crafts are available from shops,
markets and pavement sellers in the area. Zulu crafters are
especially adept in beadwork, weaving, clay pots and wooden
animal carvings. Many local crafts recycle used materials, such as
plastic bags, oil tins and beer cans, turning waste into art.
