PASSION | DRIVE | EXCELLENCE | RESPONSIBILITY | COMMITMENT
FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Volume 9 >> Issue 1
The first quarter of 2011 has been dynamic, to say the least.
In his January 25, State of the Union Address, President Obama made the following statement; “I’ve
proposed cuts to things I care deeply about, like community action programs.”
That one sentence created a firestorm from not only community action agencies, but the media,
elected officials and their constituents. Everyone asking the same question...what will the impact be
if community action dollars are cut?
Calls were made, stories were shared and our voices are being heard. BVCAA will continue to do all
we can to work as a team to provide programs that empower and initiatives that help make people
self-sufficient.
Each day, everyone at BVCAA shares their gifts and talents to
work together to strengthen the economic security for our
families and communities.
You make a difference and I want to thank you again for the
work you do and the gifts you share each day with the over
87,000 people we serve annually.
Joy J. Golliver once said, “The meaning of life is to find your
gift; the purpose of life is to give it away.”
Thank you for sharing your gifts!

Kroger Stores Donate $10,000
to BVCAA for Breast Cancer Prevention
On March 25, 2011, Kroger Store Manager, Wayne Tomlinson
(pictured left in blue shirt), presented BVCAA team members,
Julie Ribardo, PhD, Davelyn Eaves-Hood, MD, MBA and Bobby
Hubley, MBA with a check for $10,000. The funds were donated
by customers of the three Bryan-College Station Kroger Stores
and will be used to support the breast cancer prevention initiatives of the BVCAA Community Health Centers.
THANK YOU KROGER for helping people and changing lives!!!!
WOW!!!!!
Nancy Miller, Adult and Pediatric Nurse at the Bryan-College Station Community
Health Center, is one proud grandma!!
The picture to the left features her grandson, Taylor Wilson, with partner Brianna de
la Mora at the 2011 AT&T Figure Skating Championships. The competition was held
in Greensboro, North Carolina on January 22, 2011. Taylor and Brianna placed 7th in
the Novice Pairs Free Skate and 6th in the Novice Pairs Short Program.
Congratulations!!!
“EGG” PLANT
and other cool things growing over at the
Bryan-College Station Community Health Center!
Thanks to some amazing Texas A&M volunteers, the BCSCHC now has a teaching garden! On Saturday, March 26th, 16 members of TAMU’s MSC CAMAC (Memorial Student Center Committee for the
Advancement of Mexican American Culture) student group put in several hours of hard work to
“break ground” on the new garden.
It is our hope that the new garden will benefit Community Health Center patients by:
•
•
•
Improving the dietary habits and physical activity level of youth
Empowering families to start home gardens
Providing ingredients for cooking demonstrations
In case you’re wondering “What’s the big deal about having a garden?” Here are some “factoids” gathered on the website,
http://www.kidsgardening.com/2005.kids.garden.news/mar/factoids.html, from various
research studies on gardening.
Did you know that gardening:
is good exercise
•
•
can help you feel happier
•
encourages kids to eat more fruits and vegetables
•
helps kids understand plant life cycles and the importance of caring for the environment
•
can improve social skills and behavior in kids and adolescents
•
can reduce the cost of fresh fruits & vegetables
The inspired team
at the BCSCHC
also dyed eggs
and made them
available to children in the community to drop
by and select a plant in an egg.

Pumpkin Bread
Corrina Riemann, RD
Enjoy the all-American aroma of pumpkin pie all year long with this delightfully rich and hearty quick bread. In the Native
American tradition of using squash (pumpkin is one type) often, we cook and bake pumpkin into many recipes. Pour a glass of
nonfat milk to enjoy with a slice at breakfast—and you’re ready to start your day.
24 servings
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray two 8 1⁄2-by-4 1⁄2-by 2 1⁄2 inch loaf pans or 24
Vegetable oil cooking spray
2 2⁄3 cups sugar
1⁄3 cup canola oil
1⁄3 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 can pumpkin (15 ounce)
4 eggs
2⁄3 cup nonfat plain yogurt
2 2⁄3 cups all-purpose flour
2⁄3 cup toasted wheat germ
1 ½ teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 ½ cups raisins
muffin tins with the cooking spray. Cream together the sugar, canola oil, applesauce,
pumpkin, eggs and yogurt until smooth. Stir together the flour, wheat germ, salt, baking
soda, baking powder, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.
2. Combine the dry mixture with the wet one; stir until well combined. Fold in the raisins.
Pour into the prepared pans (fill the muffin tins 2⁄3 full). Bake for 50 minutes (loaves) or
25 minutes (muffins).
Tip: This freezes well as muffins or bread, up to three months. Thaw at room temperature, in
the microwave (about 15 seconds per muffin or slice), or in the toaster (slices only).
