Thank You - Michael`s Feat
“Thank you for making
Michael’s Feat a reality
for families and

Memorial Fund, Inc.
Hope for the Flowers and More than Hope for the Children
Welcome to the Michael’s Feat 12th Annual Spring Gala. At last years gala, we were able
to see and touch Michael’s Feat latest donation to both Jersey Shore and Monmouth
Medical Center; NICU Knowledge Unit is a 24 hour information source for NICU
patient families. It contains hours of video, audio, and graphics that address important
topics in a warm and sensitive manner. This allows NICU families a “hands on” educational
experience to help guide them through their NICU journey. The total cost for both units
was over $35,000.
Our goals are set high for 2012 as well. We have committed to, and will be breaking
ground shortly on a second Family Resource Room this one at CentraState Medical Center
in Freehold. One of the reasons we’re excited about this project, is because it will increase
our presence in Western Monmouth County. We’ve received such wonderful feedback
from parents who have used the existing room at Monmouth Medical, now we look forward
to having an opportunity to provide this benefit to EVERY family who has a seriously ill
newborn in Monmouth County.
In addition to the large scale project listed above, Michael’s Feat is dedicated to supporting
local families as they journey through the NICU process. While they are there, often families
feel isolated from the joys of the outside world. We make it our duty to remember and
celebrate life’s specials occasions, with our annual photos with Santa, Valentine’s Day
treats, Mother’s day brunch, Father’s Day gifts, and holiday decorations and presents.
The charity was founded in memory of our son, Michael Gerard Puharic, who lost his
battle with a serious chromosome disorder on August 1 of 2000. He lived only four
short days, yet his impact on hundreds of Monmouth and Ocean County families
continues. This is Michael’s Feat.
Because of the hard work of Event Co-Chairs Alison Schrager, Christine Colasuanno, their
event committee, and the dedicated Board of Directors, tonight’s gala is sure to be a tremendous
success. We humbly thank them for their tireless efforts. Please be sure to meet with our
committee members, our board members, and all of our dedicated volunteers. Don’t forget
to take part in our terrific silent auction. Join us and get involved in this important cause.
Our Mission
To support, give comfort and ease the burden for parents carrying
and caring for seriously ill newborns.
In addition, the fund seeks to educate and raise awareness about
chromosome disorders, specifically Trisomy 13 and other serious
illnesses that affect newborns.
About Michael’s Feat
In his loving memory, the MICHAEL GERARD PUHARIC MEMORIAL
FUND, INC. is established to support and give comfort to parents
carrying, delivering, and caring for seriously ill newborns. When a
parent is told that their newborn is ill, it becomes difficult to worry
about material items, and that’s where Michael’s Feat intends
to help. Donations collected are used to purchase and supply
Neo-Natal Intensive Care Units at community hospitals, as well as
support individual families in Monmouth County
What the Fund Provides
Overnight Bags Stuffed with Supplies
Material Items, such as Furniture and Medical Equipment
Financial Support
Unique Items for Premature Infants
Michael’s Feat Family Room offering the comforts
of home in a hospital setting
In 12 years, Michael’s Feat has provided numerous benefits to local
Monmouth and Ocean County families.
Benefit Program
Michael’s Feat fulfills its mission through three separate benefit programs:
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)/Special Care Nursery Program.
A Michael’s Feat hospital liaison responds directly to the needs of family and
staff at the NICU. When a family in need, carrying and caring for a
seriously ill newborn, is identified by this NICU liaison member, they
are asked to complete a request form. The Michael’s Feat Board then
determines the appropriate financial, material or other support needs.
Overnight Bags Program. Under the supervision of a Michael’s Feat
Board member, families who have infants admitted to any of the
Monmouth County NICUs receive a free canvas “overnight” bag stocked
with toothbrushes, shampoo, socks, razors, prepaid calling cards, disposable camera, a homemade baby blanket and other “creature comforts.” In
line with the mission of Michael’s Feat, this program enables parents to
spend more time with their ill newborns and not worry about shopping for
personal hygiene items. The program is available at many local hospitals.
Michael’s Feat has delivered hundreds of bags to local families in need.
Family Resource Center Room. Improving the quality of life is a major
goal of Michael’s Feat. Towards that end, thanks to the fundraising efforts
of the Amerigo Vespucci Society, Michael’s Feat was able to establish the
FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER ROOM for parents with seriously ill newborns
in the NICU at Monmouth Medical Center. The room includes a resource
library, computer with email access and tools to create care pages, a play
area for the siblings, periodicals, snacks and coffee machine. All of this
designed to provide families with a “living room” away from home.

Steven Hyer
Born 2010 at 2 pound 2 ounces
Jersey Shore Medical Center
Tracy and Steven Hyer of Toms River will receive the honored
family award. Michael’s Feat assisted her following the birth of her
son Steven in 2010 at 28 weeks, 2 pounds, 2 ounces. After attending
last year’s Gala, Tracy reached out to Michael’s Feat again for assistance
prior to her son Steven’s surgery for Crainiostenosis at Children’s
Hospital in Philadelphia. Michael’s Feat provided lodging and
parking for the family at a hotel right next to the hospital so they
could be close to their son during his week-long hospitalization.
Baby Steven’s metopic suture, which is the one that runs down his
forehead closed prematurely, which could have caused complicated
brain issues.
“Michael’s Feat really helped us,” said Hyer, who works for
Two River Bank in Manasquan. “You hear so many horrible
stories in the world and then you experience an organization like
Michael’s Feat, and individuals like Adam and Dana Puharic,
which renews your faith in people.”

Nathaniel Jefferson Belger
8.18.05 - 3.30.06
On August 18, 2005 Nathaniel Jefferson Belger was born at Jersey Shore University Medical Center
to the proud parents, Jeff and Kristin Belger of Manasquan. Born at 25 weeks gestation, one pound
11.3 ozs, 12-1/2 inches. At one month of age Nathan was HELI-VACed to Children’s Hospital of
Philadelphia, where he spent the next 6-1/2 months being lovingly cared for by the Nurses and
Medical Staff of the NICU. Although Nathan’s life was filled with many complicated surgeries and
constant intense medical care, he gave us 7-1/2 months of TRUE love. The miracle of one life,
however short, traveling so far and touching so many. Our precious miracle, Nathan J.
Tremendous thanks to Michael’s Feat ~ especially Dana, Adam, and their precious miracle Michael
~ for providing support to our family during our most difficult time. Forever Grateful, The Belgers

Project FIREWORK! is a year-long journey for me. I am inviting any child with
physical and/or mental disabilities into my (handicapped accessible) studio
for a free portrait session. I am looking forward to meeting these inspiring
children and hearing their stories. My goal is to publish a book of the images
and donate a portion of the proceeds to various, local children's charities.
Please spread the word and together we can make Project FIREWORK! a
success!!! Please visit my web site for the portraits and stories already told!

Over 20 adult volunteers were part of the afternoon event, which created 30 stuffed bears, each
with their own unique look. The patterns,
which included plaid, flowers, peace signs, etc.,
were developed by Maryann DiMatteo, a
Bernina Sewing teacher.
“We had so much fun cutting out the patterns and
sewing all of the pieces together,” said Debbie
Leather, a teacher of children’s programs at Bernina
Sewing and a Matawan resident. “Everyone
became attached to the individual bear they were
sewing together. Michael’s Feat is such a great cause
and it is heartwarming knowing that our work will
bring a smile to families in the NICU units.”
Each February, Bernina Sewing owner Lois Reitz,
chooses a beneficiary for the company’s community
service project. Michael’s Feat was chosen because
of its continued commitment to assisting families
of the region in need.
“We are so grateful to be the recipient of such a
warm and beautiful gesture by Bernina Sewing
and all the teachers and volunteers there,” said
Dana Puharic, Chairwoman of Michael’s Feat. “We
look forward to a day in the near future when we
deliver these to families in the NICU units at area
hospitals. These bears are sure to put a smile on
everyone’s face and become a permanent fixture in
the lives of those that receive them.”

Dear Michael’s Feat Members,
We just wanted to thank you again for helping us while we were visiting our babies in the NICU at JSUMC. Having
three preemie babies in the NICU for 5 weeks was very difficult, but all three are now happy and healthy. It was
wonderful to have the help of this great organization during this time in our lives. We just wanted to send a recent
photo of our babies, Connor, Abigail and Parker who are now 4.5 months old and thriving. We are looking forward
to walking in the Seaside St, Patrick's Day parade with the Ocean County Moms of Multiples Group!
Thank you again for all that you do for newborn babies... it is greatly appreciated!

MICHAEL’S FEAT
RESOURCE ROOM
Located next to the Regional Newborn Center Intensive Care Unit
at Monmouth Medical Center
The purpose of the Michael’s Feat
Resource Room is to provide a dedicated
space for the families and friends of the
babies in the NICU. The room is not only an
ideal waiting room — because of the proximity
to the unit — but it also offers much more!
The space has been carefully designed to
function as a “living room” away from home,
providing the comforts of home to the
families while they spend so much time in
the hospital.
Inside the room, families will find:
Soft seating options
One prominent feature of the Resource
Room is the beautiful 8’x 5’ mural on which
butterflies are placed to honor or remember
the babies that hold a special place in the
hearts of many. Engraved butterflies can be
purchased from Michael’s Feat. The profits from
the sale will be reinvested into the Michael’s
Feat Resource Room.
The room is open 24 hours a day ~ 7 days a
week. Parents can access the room using a
security code provided by their nurse. The
room is equipped with a sleeper sofa that
can be used as needed.
Refrigerator
Michael’s Feat would like to thank all of the
generous donors that helped make this
room possible. Special thanks to the Amerigo
Vespucci Society of Long Branch for their
fundraising efforts and generous donations
that were instrumental in making the project
a reality.
The décor of the room is reminiscent of
beach dunes on a sunny day. The goal is that
the cheery and warm feeling will help ease
the stresses of the parents with seriously ill
newborns and provide an escape from the
intense atmosphere of the NICU.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
B utterflies, a symbol of life and
freedom, were always special to
Michael’s parents — reminding them
their son is always with them. They
are proud to share this warm feeling
with other parents by offering the
butterfly donor pieces — a beautiful
way to pay tribute to the precious
babies in your life.
The Michael’s Feat Resource
Room at M ONMOUTH M EDIC AL
CENTER is one of the many benefits
provided by Michael’s Feat. The fund
was created in loving memory of
Adam and Dana Puharic’s newborn
son, Michael, who lost his life to a
serious chromosome disorder. The
mission of Michael’s Feat is to support,
give comfort and ease the burden
for parents carrying and delivering
seriously ill newborns. Michael’s Feat
provides this support through education
about seriously ill newborns and
providing parents with everything
from toiletries to medical equipment
to assist in caring for their ill
children. The organization recognizes
that when you have a baby in a
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU), endless hours are spent at
the hospital to help care for your
child. Parents, relatives, siblings and
friends often come to visit, and the
Michael’s Feat Resource Room is a
place where parents can take a
break, have a meal and spend
time together.
