Various Artists, Natural Selection (CD)
Catalogue Number
Nature Sounds is quickly becoming one of the most
talked about labels in independent hip-hop. After less
than 3 years under their belt, the label has earned
critical acclaim from the most discriminating
tastemakers in the business, while quietly selling over
350,000 units worldwide.
Nature Sounds was independantly established in
Brooklyn in 2003 by long-time hip-hop journalist,
producer and industry vet Devin Horwitz. At the time, there were very few hiphop labels catering to the burgeoning underground movement while maintaining
credibility amongst the purists in the streets. Nature Sounds saw its calling and
quickly began to fill that void. Since its inception, nature Sounds has been
responsible for debut records from some of the genre’s most talented and most
overlooked MCs such as Masta Killa of the Wu-Tang Clan, R.A. the Rugged
Man, Immortal Technique, Vordul Mega and more! 2006 will prove to be even
bigger for the Brooklyn based label and this album, Natural Selection is a crosssection of the new line-up of hip hop classics they have in store.

Produced by Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness, Robin Black) the
band has tapped into their inner Cheap Trick, melding the power-pop
punch of a classic like “Heaven Tonight” with a swagger and cowbellbanging boogie reminiscent of Urge Overkill’s 90s classic ‘Saturation.’
Highlights include the insistent, hooky-as-hell ‘She’s An Elevator’ and
‘Amanda Effect’ and the heartfelt ‘Should I Pretend’ which also features
Dahmnait Doyle. Guitarmonies abound, drums are whomped
mercilessly, and SGs are windmilled into submission.

Lil’ Flip, Envy Me (CD)
It’s no wonder that Houston-based underground king Lil’ Flip would change
the game with his platinum-plated 2002 major label debut Undaground
Legend and its follow-up, U Gotta Feel Me. After honing his talents under the
tutelage of late mix tape messiah DJ Screw, moving an impressive 100,000
units of his indie debut The Leprechaun and serving up 10 volumes of his own
underground mixes, Lil’ Flip has become the biggest rap name to break out of
the Lone Star State since the legendary Scarface.
With his fourth instalment I Need Mine scheduled to be released this winter,
101 again sets the stage for what is sure to be another four leaf addition to
the freestyle kings resume. With the help of Chamillionaire, Bugsy, Young
Jeezy, Bun B, ZRO, Juvenile, Lil Jon, Mikel Knight and others, Envy Me is 32
tracks of Classic Clover G.

Bun B & Rapid Ric, What It Dew Volume 2 (CD)
“Rapid Ric is one of the fastest rising DJ’s in the South right now, and it’s
mostly because of the skill he brings to his art form.” – Chamillionaire. At
only 24 years old, Rapid Ric is already Texas’ finest mixtape DJ and a rising
young entrepreneur. Every mixtape he dropped in 2005 booseted his star
higher as Texas stayed hot on Atlanta’s heels as the next big thing in
Southern hip-hop music. Pioneered by DJ Screw and the city of Houston’s
leading rap hustlers, Texas’ slow and soulful underground movement went
mainstream in 2005. Millions of CD’s by Texas artists flew off the shelves as
MTV, and even the New York Times, co-signed the Lone Star State.

Frank Lenz, Vilelenz and Thieves (CD)
Catalogue Number
With Vilelenz And Thieves renaissance man
Frank Lenz orbits within his home studio
cosmos, creating a Technicolour cloudburst
of homespun ballads channeling Neil Young
and early Built To Spill, with a drizzling of
Folk, bombastic orchestral pop, and headover-heels lyricism. Sounds like Neil Young,
Margo Guryan, Unbunny, Wayne Coyne…
Frank Lenz needs no introduction, especially
if you’ve been listening to independent music
for a good amount of time. His amazing
drumming, arranging, and producing talent have been lent to musical efforts
such ast Sarflyer 59, The Lassie Fuondation, Charity Empressa, Cush, Pedro
The Lion, Richard Swift, Kat Jones, The Dingees, Pony Express, Fold Zandura,
as well as many more. Lenz’s music has been played on TV, and he has
crisscrossed the continent touring in support of the many projects he’s been
involved with. On his latest release, the psych-folk-pop full-length Conquest
Salughter, Frank Lenz truly came into his own. The CD finds Lenz writing his
most memorable songs and infusing them with the near-rampant
experimentalism that marked his previous solo releases.
“Hey, something’s turned him into a mellower, less-danceable guy probably
all the Neil Young and Flaming Lips records he’s spent the past four years
listening to. So this one is jacked with sweeping orchestral touches, sad
piano ballads, dreamy acoustic guitars and atmospheric organ noodlings, and
it’s great, especially when Lenz hurls that voice of his up into the stratosphere
you swear he could hold a note up there for a good half-hour…This is sort of
Lenz’s own Smile album, only without the 40-year wait time, the weirdo
therapist/caregiver and the unusually potent psychedelics.”

For the next album, Answers, Tim and Leon brought onboard their friend
Chad Lenig as the new drummer as well as to engineer and co-write and
produce the new material. Chad and Tim knew each other from high school
where they had their first, short lived, rock band “Heaven’s Thunder”.
Chad later met Leon and formed another short-lived band “Black on Bone”,
that performed when Chad was on break from Fredonia College. After
Chad had received his master’s degree in music technology from Saint Rose
College, Chad opened a small project studio which served as a perfect
setting to record “ANSWERS”.
The band is influenced by such well known artists as Evanescence,
Distrubed, Dream Theatre, Savatage and Queensryche, Tool, Metallica, &
Pantera, through their style is their own this band leans more toward the
melodic progressive of these influences, but nods frequently at the more
metal of them.

By early 2004, the majority of the songs were recorded and ready for mixing.
It was then decided between the three guys that a keyboard player should be
brought on to add some atmosphere and a shredder was needed to make this
a true metal album. Lance suggested his Pyramaze band mate Jonah
Weingarten and also his old bandmate Roger Moore from his first recording
band Gemini. As soon as the guys heard Roger and Jonah play, they knew it
was perfect.
The debut cd, “From The Depths of Time”, is a nice blend of old school
heavy metal (think Iron Maiden) and the power metal/true metal of
nowadays (Hammerfall, Edguy, Savatage and Megadeth). Strong writing,
great musicianship and brilliant vocals are displayed on these 13 tracks.
