AUGUST
10-26 2007
THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL • ISSUE NO. 2
Our internationals are the proof:
The World is Flat!
Author Thomas L. Friedman came up with “The World is Flat!” title while
trying to explain why “Billy” from Bangalore is helping us register our
toaster, but we at FringeNYC knew it all along: “All the world’s a stage”,
and thus – flat.
To help up drive the point home, we have 24
international shows this year, all helping us to
feel global; all bringing us this “Je ne se qois”
essence that makes us who we are – an
International thing.

Brandt Johnson shows fantastic
range with his many characters as
he delivers the life story of Billy, a
fictional character who played
basketball for the opposing team

the Harlem Globetrotters. Director
Andrew Garman keeps a sports-like
feel of adrenaline coursing from

Truman Capote and Marilyn

OF MUSICAL
JAMBALAYA
Tensions boil like Cajun-fried crawdaddy in a bucket of steamed water in
the FringeNYC musical drama, Pogo & Evie: A Zydeco Musical. The music
of Pogo & Evie is a Creole frottoir of spicy rub-board that will have you
thinking of sweltering summer nights on the Delta. FringeNYC Propaganda
contributor Ryan D. Mayer sliced open the underbelly of the Big Easy and
pulled up a po’boy with producer Jenny Rose Costuros and writer Aaron
Latham. (Yes, Latham’s the dude married to 60 Minutes news-ticker,
Lesley Stahl.)
FringeNYC Propaganda: So what it
the gist of the show?
Jenny Rose: It’s a modern love
story of star crossed lovers with
parents who hate each other and
bands that hate each other’s
respective musical styles. They are
at war with each other, yet the
lovers can not stay away from
each other.
FringeNYC Propaganda: Do you
feel that the Louisiana heritage
explored here is important?
Jenny Rose: Louisiana culture
is mysterious and fascinating,
especially in light of the recent
tragedy.
FringeNYC seems to absorb so
many cultures and nationalities
from all over the world. We are
pleased to participate.
FringeNYC Propaganda: So Aaron,
what inspired you to incorporate
Louisiana culture into this play?
Aaron Latham: Well, I grew up in
Texas and summered in Louisiana.
While there, I listened to a lot of
Louisiana music. The first musical
by
Ryan D Mayer
I did was based on country music.
Here, I was looking for a music
type that would really shake
people’s minds. Zydeco came to
mind – its instruments are
unfamiliar to theater audiences.
FringeNYC Propaganda: Would our
FringeNYC Propaganda readers
recognize any of your other works?
Aaron Latham: I wrote the John
Travolta movie, Urban Cowboy.
FringeNYC Propaganda: What has
been the most exciting part of
FringeNYC so far?
Aaron: I’d say the midnight
podcast. The host was really
engaging and there was some
scary talent there.

Here are just a few offerings from the grand opening of FringeNYC 2007. From a blossoming
‘lil New Jersey fairy tale (“Princess Mimi, Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the

Writer Phillip Gerson cooks up a ghostly romance in ‘Night’,
now playing at the Connelly Theatre. With runaway brides
and shady brokerage deals with poltergeists, this sure as hell

THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL • ISSUE NO. 2
Our internationals are the proof:
The World is Flat!
Author Thomas L. Friedman came up with “The World is Flat!” title while

international shows this year, all helping us to

essence that makes us who we are – an
