Maryland State Fair Celebrates
135th Anniversary
In September 1879, a group of farmers held a
four-day event on a 37-acre plot in a growing
town called Timonium. Designed to promote
agriculture in Baltimore County, the event was
named the Timonium Fair and hosted an array
of competitions that showcased the area’s finest
farm goods, livestock, and homemade wares.
While exhibitors vied for prizes in a variety of
contests, the Fair also became a social epicenter,
delighting visitors with whimsical entertainment,
rides, games and treats, thrilling horse races and
agriculture education. The Fair was interrupted
twice during WWII when the grounds were used
as a U.S. Army storage depot and vehicle repair
center.
One hundred and thirty-four fairs later, that
fledgling local event has grown into the Maryland
State Fair, a vibrant summer celebration on 106
acres that attracts almost half a million visitors
each year. The 135th Maryland State Fair takes
place August 25 – September 5, 2016. Hold
the dates for next year’s fair, August 24 –
September 4, 2017.
Visit marylandstatefair.com for a full schedule
of Maryland State Fair and year-round events.

Boordy Vineyards
Maryland’s oldest family-run winery,
established in 1945 and operated by the
Deford family, stretches over a 240-acre
farm in Long Green Valley. The winery
is housed in a 19th century stone barn
whose walls provide an ideal environment
for wine production and aging. A newly
constructed winery (2013) mirrors the
stone barn, as Boordy expands along
with the ever-growing wine industry in
Baltimore County. boordy.com
DeJon Vineyards
DeJon Vineyards is located a short distance from Boordy Vineyards. The more
than 20-acre property provides the
perfect setting for DeJon’s regionallyrecognized wines. DeJon Vineyards is a

established in 1996, the original barn has
been renovated into the country-chic
tasting room that welcomes you to feel
right at home. dejonvineyard.com
Harmony Vineyards and Winery
Harmony Vineyards wines are produced
exclusively from grapes grown at their
estate vineyard located in the northcentral Piedmont. Grapes sourced from
Harmony have been used by other
commercial Maryland wineries since
2004. In 2014, Harmony Vineyards
released wine made under their own label
for the first time. harmonywinemd.com
Millstone Cellars
A new addition to Baltimore County’s
wine-making community is Millstone
Cellars. The owners have spent the last
decade experimenting and refining hard
cider and mead-making techniques using
Old World methods. The winery operates
out of the refurbished Monkton Mill, an
old, circa 1840’s grist mill, which is a
perfect example of Millstone’s approach
to business and life - recreate, explore
and rediscover. millstonecellars.com
Royal Rabbit Vineyards
Royal Rabbit sits in the rolling hills of
Parkton, Maryland. Their passion is
making superior fruit-focused, fullflavored wines. The wines include the best
traditional varieties grown in Maryland
as well as some exciting grapes newly
grown in the state. Their wines are lightly
oaked and range from dry to lightly sweet.
Royal Rabbit’s philosophy states that oak

American History
A trip to the Smithsonian isn’t necessary to experience American history
or travel back to the early days of aviation. You can explore fascinating
museums and historic sites right here in Baltimore County.
Hampton National
Historic Site
The Hampton National Historic Site,
part of the National Park Service, features a Georgian mansion, historic farm,
and beautifully landscaped grounds.
The mansion, when completed in 1790,
was one of the largest homes in the
United States and owned for more than
150 years by the Ridgelys, a prominent
Maryland family. Today, some 20 buildings and 40,000 artifacts remain to tell
the stories of the lives and culture of the
diverse people of Hampton – hired industrial and farm workers, enslaved African Americans, and the estate’s owners. nps.gov/hamp
Benjamin Banneker Historical
Park and Museum
The Benjamin Banneker Historical Park
and Museum preserves the legacy of
the first African American man of science. Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806)
was a self-taught mathematician and
astronomer who helped survey the
boundary for Washington, DC. This
national landmark site was the farmstead of the Banneker family and dates
back to the 17th century. Today you’ll
find a museum, gift shop, patio garden, nature trails, and a restored 19th
century replica of Banneker’s log cabin.

Glenn L. Martin Maryland
Aviation Museum
Hubert V. Simmons Museum of
Negro Leagues Baseball
At the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum, located at Martin State
Airport, you’ll explore aviation and aerospace history. The museum chronicles
the accomplishments of Glenn L. Martin, whose Middle River plant manufactured World War II bombers. The gallery also focuses on the operations of
the Lockheed Martin Corporation, the
company’s present-day business. A big
draw is the museum’s display of historic
aircraft, including fighter jets, bombers,
reconnaissance planes and airliners.
The Hubert V. Simmons Museum is the
newest museum in
Baltimore County. It
is housed in the Owings Mills branch of
the Baltimore County
Public Library located
at the County Campus Metro Centre.
Exhibits and displays of photographs,
artifacts, memorabilia, and graphic panels of both Maryland and U.S. Negro
Leagues are showcased on each level of
the library’s three floors. The Museum is
named for “Bert” Simmons, who played
for the legendary Baltimore Elite Giants in
the 1950s. smnlbinc.org

Fire Museum of Maryland
Considered one of the finest museums
of its kind in the United States, the Fire
Museum of Maryland in Lutherville features displays of more than 50 firefighting
rigs spanning from 1806 to 1957. As an
educational institution, the Fire Museum
offers a variety of special events for children, firefighters, and adults that introduce visitors to the history of firefighters,
antique fire apparatus, and related memorabilia. firemuseummd.org

War of 1812 Historic Sites in
Baltimore County
Many are familiar with the naval bombardment of Fort McHenry and the writing of our national anthem in 1814, but
few know of the British land attack in
southeast Baltimore County – the Battle
of North Point. Historic sites from that
battle are destinations on the newly des-
ignated Star-Spangled Banner National
Historic Trail. Todd’s Inheritance Historic
Site, on North Point Road, was pivotal
to the defense of Baltimore in 1814.
The actual Battlefield is divided by North
Point Road with one acre, known as Battle Acre, dedicated to those who fought
in the Battle. On Old North Point Road
stands the second oldest known military
monument in Maryland, the third in the
United States. It honors Private Aquila
Randall, who was killed in a skirmish on
September 12, 1814.
Baltimore County
Historical Society
Since 1959, the Historical Society
of Baltimore County (HSBC) has
been housed in the County’s third
and last Almshouse (built in 1872),
located in Cockeysville. HSBC’s
mission is to collect, preserve and
interpret the rich history of Baltimore County. The Almshouse was
once home to the poor, indigent,
and mentally ill. Today’s visitors to
the Almshouse can see 9,000 museum artifacts, 8,000 historic photographs, a 4,000-volume library,
500 historic maps and atlases,
and hundreds of archival collections. hsobc.org

Historic Homes
The Ballestone-Stansbury House is
an historic home located on Cedar Point
between Back and Middle rivers in Essex. Portions of the house were built during the late 18th and early 19th centuries on a track of land that was sold and
passed to several owners until the current farmhouse was built on the property
by Isaac Stansbury in 1816. The house
is open for visitors at various times of the
year.
The Todd Farmhouse is an historic
home located at Fort Howard. Since
1664 Thomas Todd’s family owned 1000
acres of land in this area of the County. During the War of 1812, the house,
34 Enj oy B a l t i m oreCou n ty. com
which overlooks Shallow Creek and the
Chesapeake Bay, was used by the Todd
family as a lookout point to observe
the approaching British Fleet and warn
Maryland militia.
The Perry Hall Mansion is an historic
structure located on a hill above the
Gunpowder River Valley. The mansion
is an excellent example of late colonial
and early 19th century life in eastern
Baltimore County. Construction was
completed in 1776 under Harry Dorsey
Gough, a wealthy Baltimore merchant
who owned the vast plantation.
The County’s historic homes are listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
