SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS
On The Top
After twelve long awaited years, we finally reached the top. The last four years
have gone the fastest, it seems.
Our freshman year we elected Kim Nixon
as class President, Julie Eisenbarth-V.P.,
Willy Cheng-Treasurer, and Lisa Lindstrom-Secretary. Our Student Council representatives were Theresa Jones, Laurie
Mclntire, Cathy Pilarski, and Julie Vanloo.
Our Homecoming float, "The Key to Victory" received third place. We chose Kim
Nixon and Perry Wade as our attendents.
As sophomores our thoughts were on
class rings and driver's license. Kim Nixon was our class President, Joe Clary-V.P.
Mary Neff-Secretary, Julie TornquistTreasurer. Our Student Council Reps,
were Theresa Mangiaracina, Gary Moore,
Laurie Pence and Cathy Pilarski. Mary
Neff and Mark Anderson served as our
Homecoming attendents and we tied for
first place with float "We'll flatten the
Aces."
Our Junior year we elected Julie Eisenbarth as President of our class. Joe Murphy was V.P. Theresa Jones-Secretary,
Randy Kutchma Treasurer. Mark Anderson, Stuart Halley, Brenda Hodges and
Mary Neff were our Student Council Representatives. We won first place for our
Homecoming float entitled "Go Geese
Lightning". Our attendents were Gene
Shelfaut and Karrie Witt. We put on our
Junior-Senior Prom at the K.C. Hall. Quinteesence was the band and "This One's
For You" was the theme. It was a night to
be remembered by everyone.
And finally as Seniors. Our officers were
Joe Murphy-President, Julie EisenbarthV.P., Mary Neff-secretary, and Julie
Tornquist-Treasurer. Our Student Council
Representatives were Laurie Pence, Theresa Mangiaracina, Mark Anderson, and
Stuart Halley. We chose as our King and
Queen Mike Pillen and Laurie Pence. Our
attendents were Gary Moore and Julie
VanLoo. Our float received third place
with the theme "The Wizard's of Wethersfield Follow the yellow Brick Road to a
Victory." We had a skating party in the
middle of February at Wheel's Away. For
our class trip we spent a day at Marriot's
Great America.
We would like to give a very special
thanks to Mrs. Brownfield, who gave up
so much of her time as the sponsor of the
Class Of 1980.

The Junior class got off to a great start
this year by placing first in the Homecoming festivities with the float entitled
"A Star Is Born." Sandy Churling and Terry Neirynck represented our class as attendants this year.
Throughout the year, our class has been
busy sponsoring various activities, including a car wash, social hours and several concessions. We looked forward to
sponsoring Prom which we entitled
"Stairway to Heaven." We dedicated our
Prom this year to the Seniors.
As Juniors, we look ahead to our last and
most exciting year at WHS as Seniors!

John Addis and Mike Chasteen were elected as Student Council Representatives. Karen
Tornquist and Rick Mansfeldt were chosen to represent our class, as attendants, for the
Homecoming activities. Our float "The Champs" received fourth place. We sold magazines as our money-making project. The money we raised went towards the Midwinter
Dance which we sponsored along with the freshmen. The theme was "Sweetheart Serenade". This was also the year in which we selected our class rings. Yea, we're half way

American Field Service
I don't think I'm allowed to do that!
As we began the 1979-80 school year, the
AFS club was pleased to welcome Mike
Jull of New Zealand to the Wethersfield
community. We also enjoyed hearing
about the wonderful experiences of Theresa Jones' stay in Turkey during the
summer.

We began the year with a picnic at Windmont Park sponsored by our adult chapter. In October the student chapter had a
weiner roast and hay rack ride at the Sue
Harker residence. Foreign Language Club
members were guests at this activity. Karen Tornquist invited us to her home for a
Halloween costume party. At Christmas,
we ate heartily at Happy Joes to celebrate the holiday season.
As the winter months passed, we prepared for our AFS weekend. We invited
students from eight other schools to
spend their weekend as members of our
community. We visited a farm and the
Star Courier; we went to a country western concert, and we had several activities at the YMCA. The weekend was very
successful. March 22 was Mike's birthday, so we surprised him with a small
party at school. We closed the year with
our assistance in collecting for the
American Cancer Society.
We say "so long " to Mike and also "good
luck" to Mark Sadowski who will be
spending his summer in France.

Theresa Jones — AFS To Turkey
Merhaba!
Last summer was the most meaningful period of my life. I lived in a small village called
Bagarasi which, when finally located on a map, is found in southwestern Turkey, near the
Aegean sea.
My home was with the Tevfik Ercetin family. My anne, which is Turkish for mother, was
named Neriman. She was a fantastic cook and spent hours preparing each meal. I had a
sixteen year old sister named Hulya and a twenty year old sister named Melek. My parents
spoke no English. Hulya and Melek spoke a little English. The first two weeks I was there we
always had to use our dictionaries, but I quickly picked up Turkish since I was surrounded
with it.
I lived in a typical house with two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room. We had cold
running water and electricity most of the time. I literally lived outside though. We often
cooked our meals over the fire and we ate every meal outside. Two other necessities, the
bathroom and the television, were also outside!
Eating is a main activity in Turkey. The food was one of the things I liked most about
Turkey. We ate many vegetables such as egg-plant, green beans and tomatoes, all fresh
from our garden. Rice was fixed plain, or in soups, stuffed in tomatoes and peppers, and in
meat dishes. The little meat that we ate was usually beef or sometimes Iamb. On one rare
occasion WE ate brains. My family grew peaches, plums, pears, apples, figs and grapes.
The fresh fruit was my favorite food. MY mother made cheese and yogurt. A Turkish
specialty I enjoyed was borek which is thin layers of pastry that are filled with cheese or
fruit preserves. Meal times were both the most enjoyable and the most frustrating times
for me. I was proud of myself when I could finish eating two helpings of some strange new
food and it was very frustrating for them to give me a third or fourth helping when I was
full.
Scrubbing cloths.
Daily life was much more relaxed in Turkey. I had a very relaxing summer even though I
constantly found myself in new situations. I had so many relatives that it took me nearly
three weeks to figure out who was who. In fact it took me six weeks to discover my father
was a taxi driver. Every minute brought new surprises so I was rarely bored. We spent out
afternoons and evening visiting people. All the women crocheted and embroidered beautiful handmade things. They taught me to knit so I could join in too. We would sit outside on
a balcony eating cakes and fruit, sewing or playing cards. It was truly peaceful.
Bagarasi has a population of six thousand. Most families earned their living by farming.
Cotton was the main crop, but they also grew corn, sun-flowers, and potatoes. Every
family had a garden that provided most the food for their daily needs. The houses were
made of brick and then plastered. They all have red tile roofs and are painted yellow, blue
or green. It was very dry in the southwest region of Turkey, in fact it didn't rain the whole
time I was there. Most families have a car but one saw as many tractors or horses and
carts going down the road as you did cars.
A popular form of transportation.
Tradition is very strong throughout Turkey. Most of television programs were about
folklore. Folklore was taught in school. Each region of Turkey had its own special songs and
dances. Turkish people love to dance and I got many laughs out of watching my father
dance.
I met many people last summer and I made several good friends. One AFS motto is:
"Turning Places Into People." The people in Turkey are the most open, warm people I have
ever met. They are what made my summer so special. Through them I learned much about
their country and customs. I had the opportunity to learn things I could never have learned
from books. 1 thank AFS for giving me a summer of experiences I will never forget.

Mike Jull — A.RS- From New Zealand
Hi! My name is Mike Jull and this year I
have been the AFS student at WHS. I
come from New Zealand, which is a country of three million people in the South
Pacific. 1 live in a city called Auckland
which has 850.000 people and is situated
on a peninsula in between two oceans.

In New Zealand my father is a District
Supervisor for the telephone company
and my mother is a housewife. I have and
older brother, Graham, who is at University, and a younger sister, Robyn, who is
in her 4th year of high school.
Here in Kewanee I live with The AndersonS) Rich, Carolyn, Mark and Jim. My
dad works for Illinois Power Company
and my mom works for General Telephone. This year I was a senior along with
Mark, and Jim was a sophomore.
I have really loved being here in the United States. I have done a lot of great things
and met many wonderful people. I have
found quite a few similarities between
New Zealand and the United States, but
enough differences to have kept me "on
my toes," all year long. Here, the pace of
life is faster and everything seems "bigger." Also, school is different. In New
Zealand we go to high school for five
years and the school work is more difficult. Sports play a much bigger role in
schools here also.

wonderful friends here at Wethersfield
whom I will never forget, so I hope it
won't be too long before I am able to
come back to Kewanee.

The Future Farmers of America is an organization, for students of agriculture, which helps
them develop agriculture leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. The Wethersfield FFA,
under the direction of Mr. Pratt, Advisor, participated in the State and National Conventions, numerous Section III judging contests, and many local activities. Through these
activities many FFA members discover the value of themselves as young agriculture
leaders. FFA provides a connecting link between the classroom and the wroking world of
agriculture.

In my opinion.
As the school year began, we held our
first meeting with election of officers.
Our club increased its membership considerably. We started off the year with a
hayrack ride, wiener roast at the Harker
residence. Everyone enjoyed playing volleyball with Ma and Pa Harker. We all
remember Mr. Harker telling about the
Spiegel alligator pond. The Tornquist's invited us to their home for a Halloween
costume party. As usual, we enjoyed our
annual Pizza Party for Christmas where
our entertainment was an upside-down
Taco pizza on the floor. We look forward
to our annual banquet to end a good year.

members brought in a good amount of
money this year. Beginning with the sale
of mums for homecoming, members went
right into the most successful book fair
thus far and continued earning money by
having "delicious" bake sales. They used
the money for a pizza party and an "educationally fun" trip in the spring. Everyone had a good time and began making
plans for next years big event.

The Wethersfield Pom Pon squad for the
1979-1980 season was selected in April
after a week of steady practices to prepare for tryouts. This season only 12 girls
were chosen rather than 16. Throughout
the summer, the girls were always busy
with Pom Pon activities. They attended
camp for a week in Bloomington. They
also participated in 2 talent contests:
Sheffield Homecoming, and Hog Days in
Kewanee where they placed 2nd receiving a trophy.
At the beginning of the school year, Kim
Nixon and Theresa Mangiaracina were
elected as captains. Work was begun to
prepare for routines which would be performed at each home basketball game.
Among such performances was Barbara
Streisand's hit song "Main Event" at our
Homecoming celebration. The squad was
also invited to perform at a football game
to the music of the Wethersfield Band.
We enjoyed another successful season
with the co-operation of all squad members.

V.I.CA.
The Vocational Industrial Arts Club of
America is an international organization
which has just been organized for the
first time here at Wethersfield High
School. The purpose of the club is to help
students prepare and choose an occupation or profession for their future life.
Guest speakers from the community are
brought in to inform students about different aspects of careers as to the education and training needed and the work
load of the profession or career.
We have gained much experience, knowledge, and fun. Our club is based on getting involved and being concerned about
Industrial Arts and our future. If you're
concerned too, join us.

The club strives for vocational and occupational career goals for the future of its
members. This years activities included:
painting a house, painting a mural on a
study hall wall, the annual V.I.CA. dance,
and field trips concerned with furthering
our education.

The 1979 version of the Flying Geese compiled a successful but disappointing season. For the first time in over a decade
The Geese received a state ranking of
3rd in class A. A major factor in that
recognition was the superb defense
played by The Geese. They held their
first three opponents scoreless before finally being scored upon. However, at midseason The Geese ran into the Buzz-saw
defense of Alexis and suffered their first
lost. That defeat was to be coach Vitali's
first homecoming loss in 3 years. The
Geese bounced back to win their next 2
games before suffering their 2nd loss in
the season finale, a loss that could have
cost the Geese a wild card entry into the
state play-offs.

successfu. We salute the Varsity on thefr
fine season and for providing us with a

Football Cheerleaders
The cheerleaders did very well at camp
this year. The varsity received two "excellent" ribbons and three "superior" ribbons. The Junior Varsity received one
"excellent" ribbon and four "superior"
ribbons. Both squads received "Super
Star" ribbons. Together the squads received two "spirit sticks" and, on the
final day, were able to take one home.
Both squads were also nominated for the
"Award of Excellence," which is the highest honor a squad may receive. The varsity cheerleaders are: Julie Eisenbarth
(captain), Julie VanLoo, Anne Johnson,
Cindy Coughlin, and Karrie Witt. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders are: Kay Peterson and Cindy Briggs (Co-captains), Anna
Garcia, Amber Ording, Kim Lamholm, and
alternate, Laurie Swearingen.

Surprising season for everyone. Due to the lack of experience and lettermen, most everyone thought the
season would only be average or less. With hard work
and playing together, the season was a super success.
Many games, the team was down on the short end of
the score at half, but came storming back to win and
picked up the nickname — The Cardiac Kids.
In conclusion, we had several seniors that started at
some time or other and played a great part in our
success. To the juniors and sophmores: work hard so
we can keep up the tradition) WHS teams in the last 3
years have lost only 2 conference games and won 40.

Mrs. Linda Bialobreski came to WHS six years ago as Miss Linda
Nelson. She has taught Typing I and II, Jr. High Vocational, and
Consumer Education to the seniors. She has also been a class
sponsor, and sponsor of the Pom pons. She has been a very
talented, capable teacher, and a nice person to work with and
know. Mrs. Bialobreski's position was eliminated because of economic reasons. Mrs. Bialobreski's leaving is a loss of a fine person
to WHS. We appreciate her efforts very much.

How can one summarize an exceptional
professional career of fifteen years in
one paragraph? Miss Beck meant so much
to so many. She had a special way of
working with students, a creative teaching technique in the classroom, and the
uncanny ability to turn on otherwise
tense situation into a song of laughter.
Miss Beck was strongly influenced by religion. She lived a commendable life. Her
warm and friendly manner, her love of
life, and her courageous acceptance of an
extraordinary burden endeared her to us
all.

Miss Beck. Throughout our years in high
school, Miss Beck was our sponsor, with
her help and support, she helped us in
many ways to enrich our class. She was
always willing to do her utmost for our
school and dedicated her life to the students. We will never forget such a wonderful person as Miss Beck. The class of
"81" will always think about her and remember the many things she has done for
us and for our school.
