Cassville man admits to murdering his girlfriend in 2011
Kathee Baird
A man from Cassville
has pleaded guilty to his involvement in the 2011 death
of his girlfriend.
Jimmy Joe Nelson, 40,
was originally charged with
second-degree murder and
armed criminal action for
the August 2011 death of his
girlfriend, 43 year-old Vicki
Leigh Clark.
In a negotiated plea
agreement, Nelson plead
guilty to involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal
action on Monday, June 24.
Prosecutor Johnnie Cox
says Nelson, who is clinically blind, slit the throat of
his lover during a domestic
disturbance and then called
her employer to say she had
committed suicide.
According to the probable cause statement, Nelson
called Clark’s boss and told
them Clark killed herself
Feds seeking help in
search for Monett man

Federal authorities are
asking for help from the
public in locating a Monett
man who is facing bank robbery charges.
Law enforcers say Joseph K. Meierotto, 49, initially went into Great Southern Bank at 507 E. Kearney
in Sprinfield about 5 p.m.
on June 14th to conduct
bank business. He returned
a short time later with a gun
and demanded cash from a
teller. Meierotto reportedly
used a stolen vehicle out of
Barry County in the robbery.
That vehicle has since been
recovered.
Authorities say Meierotto should be considered
armed and dangerous and
are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to call the FBI at 417882-3303.
about 2 a.m. - Clark’s boss
then notified authorities
when the woman did not
show up for work 11:00 a.m.
Neighbors told investigators that the couple fought
on a regular basis and Nelson would lock his girlfriend
out of the apartment....sometimes when it was freezing
outside.
Investigators say Clark
had “defensive cut wounds”
on her hands and arm and
a lengthy time and off the
streets of Cassville and Barry
County. A lot of factors went
into the decision for the plea
agreement, including the fact
that he is legally blind.”
Nelson was sentenced
to 15 years for involuntary
manslaughter and 3 years
for armed criminal action.
Those sentences will be
served concurrently.

face and skull from a beating

The Cassville Rotary Club hosted the annual Cassville Rodeo at Bill Hailey Arena last
Friday and Saturday. The Cassville rodeo is in it’s 71st year and has become a time honored
tradition for many Barry County residents.
Ruark and Sgt. Robert Evenson with the Life Saving
award for outstanding police
performance in the saving of
a human life, and the display
of conspicuous initiative, capability and attention to duty,
thereby earning respect and
admiration for himself and
the department.
The two were dispatched
to a scene on Thursday, June
20th, after 911 received a
call from a woman saying
she needed help. The deputies thought they were going
to come upon a domestic dispute but when they arrived, a
man was on the floor, turning
blue and unresponsive as a
10-year-old boy was trying
to give him CPR.
"Our training kicked
right in without any hesitation," stated Deputy Ruark.
The deputies did CPR
until an ambulance arrived at
the scene. The two were able
to revive the man and get a
pulse on him.
"The man was basically
deceased when the deputies
arrived at the scene. I am
very proud of them."
“Our officers do a lot
more than just writing tickets
and making arrests,” stated
Sheriff Epperly.
“These officers do a lot
of positive things for this
county.”
The man, who had been
waiting for a pacemaker to be
put in, was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, Sheriff
Epperly stated he had just received word on Monday that
man had passed away.
"We send our condolences to the family. If we
were able to give the family
a couple of extra days with
their loved one, then it was
all worth it," said Sgt. Evenson.

Local students attend Electric Youth Tour in Washington D.C. Last week’s court cases
Eighty-seven
high
school juniors participated in
Missouri’s 50th annual Missouri Electric Youth Tour
to Washington, D.C., June
14-20. Local delegates were
(from left): Tyler Greenlee,
Exeter, and Tristen Cain,
Seligman. They were sponsored by Barry Electric Cooperative, Cassville.
The seven-day tour provides an action-filled week
for high school students, offering them opportunities to
learn firsthand what it is like
to be involved in politics,
community service and today’s pressing issues.
Highlights included the
young people visiting with
representatives from their
congressional districts and
touring famous monuments,
the Smithsonian Institution’s
museums and Arlington National Cemetery. The group
also took a sightseeing and
dance cruise on the Potomac
River one evening with delegates from other states.
Other events of the week
from BC Judicial Center
included participation in the
Electric Youth Day, during
which a special program coordinated by the National
Rural Electric Cooperative
Association brought together
more than 1,600 Youth Tour
delegates from across the
United States. The delegates
enjoyed featured speeches
by government leaders and
motivational speakers, such
as Mike Schlappi, an inspiring four-time Paralympic
medalist and two-time world
wheelchair basketball champion.
Since 1964, the nation’s
cooperative electric utilities
have sponsored more than
50,000 high school juniors
and seniors for visits to their
U.S. congressional delegations, energy and grassroots
government education sessions and sightseeing in
Washington. For more information about the AMEC
Youth Tour program, please
go to www.amec.org/content/youth-programs.

offers TDAP shot
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease that
can cause serious illness. It
is passed easily from personto-person. Pertussis is caused
by a bacteria found in the
mouth, nose and throat of an
infected person and is spread
when that person coughs,
sneezes or talks. It starts with
cold and flu-like symptoms
and after about two weeks
the cough becomes more
severe. After a coughing episode someone with pertussis
needs to take deep breaths
which often times can result in a "whooping" sound,
commonly vomits and feels
very tired. Pertussis can last
for weeks and even months
if not treated early. Pertussis
is most harmful for young
babies and can be deadly. Infants are most at risk before
they can receive their first
pertussis vaccination at two
months of age.
The best way to protect
against the spread of pertussis is vaccination. Infants
and children receive the protection from multiple doses
of a vaccine called TDAP. As
time goes by, the protection
from previous vaccination
can fade. The Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) recommends a booster dose of
TDAP vaccine for everyone
11 years old through adulthood especially those who
are in close contact with babies and young children. The
TDAP vaccine also provides
a booster dose of Tetanus, a
disease that enters the body
through cuts, scratches, or
wounds.
Barry County Health Department will be offering the
TDAP vaccine for those 11
years old and up plus adults
on the following limited clinic dates and locations. There
is a $10.00 cost for the vaccine.

Melton celebrates 90th birthday with surprise party
Rachael Freeman
Senator Emory Melton had
made it rather clear that he
didn't want anything special
planned in honor of his 90th
birthday. He was perfectly
content with the barbecue his
staff prepared for him the day
before his actual birthday,
which is June 20th. In fact,
he was looking forward to the
left overs. Little did Senator
Melton know that many of
who he thought were friends
and comrades were conspiring against him.

Applequist Award recognizes
Barry County native
publishes humours novel Passion and Pride of Shell Knob Senior Center
Charles King, a third
generation native of Barry
County, recently authored
the book, “The Spiritual
Awakening of Earl Eugene
Needmore.”
The humorous novel is a
tale of good old redneck boy
from the Ozarks, Earl Eugene Needmore.
His problems begin
when, inebriated, he agrees,
for five hundred dollars, to
kill someone he has never
seen. The attempted assassination is a total disaster and
Earl winds up in the hospital,
a victim of his own ineptness.
Needmore is convinced
God spoke to him in the hospital after he is mistakenly
given a huge dose of morphine. Determined to please
his maker and mend his sinful ways, he is absolutely
certain the Lord wants him to
go to Yellowstone National
Park to seek out and destroy
evil personified. He’s just
not sure what evil is. With
his nephew, Bayless, and a
trio of hillbilly musicians, he
begins his odyssey in an old,
converted school bus.
Fate throws Reverend
J.J. Bradshaw, a corrupt television evangelist from Branson, and his entire entourage
into the mix. Along the way,
they interact with several interesting and colorful characters. Though temptation is
strong and he has his problems, in the end, right prevails and Earl and is compatriots do indeed destroy
anevil empire.

The Central Crossing
Senior Center received the
first Jim Applequist Award
of Excellence on Friday,
June 14, at a luncheon held
at the center. This award
comes from the Southwest
Missouri Agency on Aging
to honor those centers that
have demonstrated excellence in these areas: community involvement, excellence
in education or empowerment programs for seniors,
friendliness and cooperation of staff, and excellence
in meals program management. Of the 40 or so senior
centers in southwest Missouri, the Central Crossing
Senior Center ranked number one the first year of this
prestigious award. Glenn
Phillips, CFO of Shell Knob
Seniors Inc., opened the program attended by over 130
individuals. He spoke about
the history that he had with
James Applequist in starting the Central Crossing Senior Center in early 1999.
He described him as a doer,
who took us by the hand
and guided us through all
the steps to the achievement
we have today. Without his
guidance and goodwill, we
would not be standing here
today.” June Huff, Director of Community Services,
spoke about the love Jim had
for his family and his dedication to his work at SWMOA.
She welcomed the Applequist family; Jim’s widow,
Darlene, daughters, Stephanie Richter, Gail Whiting,
and Katrina Applequist and
thanked them for attending
this first year of the Applequist Award. Star Kohler,
Community Operations Officer, shared how Jim cared so
much about the communities
that he worked with in developing services for seniors.
She said, “Jim, in his 29
years of experience, excelled
in caring about people, helping them plan, in helping create centers for seniors, providing them leadership, and
making them leaders in their
varied programs. Shell Knob
was one of those centers that
Jim thought was outstanding. He shared with me

Vanderpool
Charlene May Vanderpool,
age 79, of Washburn,
Missouri, died Tuesday, June
18, 2013, due to injuries from
a car accident.
She was born in Washburn,
Missouri, May 24, 1934,
the daughter of Charley
H. and Myrtle B. (Taylor)
Stinecipher. On July 30,
1949, in Exeter, Missouri,
she was united in marriage to
Farrell C. Vanderpool, who
survives. Also surviving are
one son, Richard Vanderpool
and his wife, Staria, of Fulton,
Missouri; two daughters, Beth
Ann Vanderpool of Washburn,
Missouri, and Mary Jane
Walls and her husband, Chris,
of Kansas City, Missouri; one
brother, Carl Stinecipher and
his wife, Betty, of Georgia;
and one sister, Sue Wilson
and her husband, Butch, of
Washburn, Missouri.
Preceding her in death were
her parents; one infant son,

years, she was a health
assistant for Mercy Home
Health. Charlene was an
active member of Cassville
First Baptist Church where
she was devoted to the
children in the nursery. One
of her great joys was when
children would recognize
her and eagerly run to her
with outstretched arms at
church and even places like
Walmart. She always stood
up for those less fortunate,
having given aid and support
to many needy people,
animals and worthy causes
over the years. Charlene
was a certified Red Cross
volunteer, and as a member
of the Southern Baptist
Disaster Relief Ministry, she
worked many hours with the
rescue and clean-up effort
after the Joplin Tornado. She
was an avid animal lover,
having rescued and cared for
dozens of dogs, cats and other
animals over the years. As a
gardener, Charlene produced
bumper crops of glorious
flowers, and she attributed
her success as a wonderful
cook to the delicious
homegrown vegetables she
grew each year. She was a
strong advocate for higher
education and helped put
several friends and relatives
through college after her
own children had received
their degrees. She embraced
technology eagerly and
enjoyed surfing the internet
for news, recipes and to
communicate with friends. It
was on the Web that she loved

Paula Andersen
Jacks Maps, LLC is a
new business in Shell Knob.
Jack Healey, sole proprietor,
and his office manager, Renee Arthur, joined the Shell
Knob Chamber of Commerce
last week. Their business ribbon cutting took place during the board meeting in Saw
Tooth Mill on Wednesday.
Jack Healey has 15
years experience in the sales
of custom designed maps.
Renee Arthur has worked
for herself as the owner of
a paint and decorating center in Cassville for five years
and has always helped her
husband, Jim, in his business
as a CPA.
Jacks Maps, LLC will
be the producer of this year’s
Shell Knob Chamber map
that will be provided free to
visitors at the office. It will
also be available to those
businesses that purchase an

will have it’s location noted
on the finished map. Jack
promises that this year’s map
will provide much more detail and be easier to read. The
first printing will be 10,000
maps.

The 69th E-911 board
meeting was held on Monday,
June 24th, at 6:30 p.m.
The financial report given by Jon Horner showed the
finances were on track. The
2013-2014 budget was also discussed by Mike Phillips. There
were no major changes. However, there was a price increase
on training this year: 20132014’s total was $15,000 from
2012-2013’s $7,777.57. This
was explained to be the cause
of an increase of staff members,
and with the extra finances, the
E-911 center is able to send employees to more conferences.
An upgrade was also budgeted in for the dispatch Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
in an amount not to exceed
$24,000. The current system
is five years old and is used for
recording all incidents and records, so it is important to keep
up to date.
The savings account for
the E-911 Center has approximately $460,000 and is currently earmarked for contingency
on the outcome of the Monett
litigation lawsuit. Once the
outcome has become final, the
center will earmark this fund
for future costs and capital improvement plans.
The total expense for
the 2013-2014 year was
$1,214,715.73, and the revenue
over expense was $13,884.27.
This does include the Wells
Fargo Loan Payment and is a
decrease of 3.65% from the
2012-2013 budget, keeping in
mind that the E-911 Center has
not been collecting the 3/8 tax
rate the whole year, only ten
months. The tax rate for fiscal
year 2013-2014 was also voted
upon in the meeting all agreeing on the 3/8 rate.
House Bill 653 enables
legislation allowing counties to
put a question on the ballot for
voters asking how to fund 9-1-1.
It would also place a tax on prepaid wireless devices that would
go towards making a grant fund
available to those areas needing
assistance providing E-911 services.
The E-911 Center also received a high score for quality
control over all EMD calls for
the quarter. The score was 95%

the ladies to utilize their golf
skills to help their team get
the best score.
The extracurricular activities were designed to provide
additional fun and included
picking cards with hopes of
getting a good poker hand,
dressing up as cowgirls and
riding hay horses in preparation for a team picture, driving golf balls at targets, looking for gold balls, and drinking a shot now and then.
Prizes were awarded for

people enjoy cookouts
with family and friends as
a way to celebrate special
occasions or unwind from a
stressful week. Follow these
guidelines for safe grilling.

Buy ground meat and
poultry no longer than one
to two days before you are
planning to grill. If it is going
to be longer, freeze them.

Thaw frozen meat in the
refrigerator or microwave

in the microwave must be

should never be thawed on

Marinate meat and poultry

having a reunion in 2015,
either on June 13 or 27.
June 13 was available at the
museum, so it was scheduled.
Cheryl Gabriel requested
permission of the group to
have the Sons of Confederate
Veterans clean and decorate
the grave of James Burton
Arnold who was killed by
bushwhackers on his way
home from the Civil War.
He is buried in a cemetery
in Seligman. The group
approved her request.
Bill Arnold entertained
the group by telling about
the Exeter Train Robbery,
a tale that had been handed
down from his father, Frank
Arnold. He told how after the
bank robbery the two robbers
wrecked their Model T
vehicle and had to go by foot
through the Arnold property
where they supposedly hid
the loot. However, no money
was ever found.
Nine-year-old
Olivia
Mosby performed a song for
the group.
Since it was Jerry Arnold’s
birthday, ‘Happy Birthday’
wishes were sung to him by
all.
No election of offices was
held since Bill Arnold agreed
to continue as President, Bob
Arnold as Treasurer, and
Diana West as Secretary.

“Where It Pays To Advertise”
You might be tempted to keep plugging in devices and appliances
until all the outlets in that power strip are full. But you should know
that a power strip or adapter does NO T increase the capacity of the
wires in the wall or the circuit. An overloaded circuit can become a
fire hazard.
Be aware of how much electricity is being drawn by the combination
of appliances connected to a power strip or adapter, and limit the
number of items connected to avoid overloading the circuit.
