12 & 13 June 2008
In times when global warming with all its consequences challenges the world
and prices for fossil fuels are soaring while fuel reserves are becoming scarce,
we are searching for ways to stop or even reverse these trends.
Forests and their main product, -wood-, are unquestionably part of the
solution. This is why forests are so important and require all our attention. But
forests are not only a source of energy and a main carbon sink, they are also
complex ecosystems and a fascinating biocenoses. At the same time, because
Lucien Lux
of their extraordinary biological diversity, they are showcases for education
Minister of Environment and outreach activities in the fields of conservation and natural history. There
is no better classroom to teach children and adults alike the interconnectedness of plants and animals and their role in sustaining natural ecosystems and
their services to our societies. This can be done in a playful manner appealing
to children who, for the most part, no longer have a chance to experience
nature by themselves in surroundings that become more and more artificial
and driven by technology.
The teaching of nature, also known as Forest Pedagogics, is essential in
sharpening the interest and the knowledge of current and future generations
about nature and its importance for mankind.
Luxembourg is proud to have put in place a network of visitor centres located
in its most relevant natural sites throughout the country. The “Forest Discovery
Centre Burfelt” is one of them and has been designed specifically for Forest
Pedagogics, and is maintained and managed by a knowledgeable staff of the
Forest administration.
It is a great honour for Luxembourg, that the “Forest Discovery Centre
Burfelt” has been chosen as the venue of the 3rd European Forest Pedagogics
Convention, which marks one of the highlights of the celebration of its 15th
anniversary.
It is my pleasure to welcome the participants from all over Europe to this
meeting and I wish you an enjoyable stay and all the success in your work.
