Conakry Resource Guide
According to a legend, the name of the city comes from the fusion of the
name “Cona”, a wine producer of the Baga people, and the word “nakiri”,
which means in Sosso the other bank or side.
The five urban communes make up the Conakry Region, one of the eight
Regions of Guinea, which is headed by a governor. At the second-tier
prefect level, the city is designated as the Conakry Special Zone, though
the prefecture and regional government are one and the same.
At two million inhabitants, it is far and away the largest city in Guinea,
making up almost a quarter of the nation’s population and making it more
than four times bigger than its nearest rival, Kankan.
City Overview
Conakry holds a special attraction in Guinea. Several factors were involved in its expansion: its proximity
to the sea its central position on the Atlantic coast, the dense concentration of the public, administrative,
commercial, industrial and financial institutions, and finally the port and airport facilities.
Conakry developed on Tumbo Island at the tip of the Kaloum Peninsula, to which
it is now joined by an isthmus, the city having long spread on to it. The city was
essentially founded after Britain ceded the island to France in 1887. It became the
capital of Guinée Française in about 1904 and prospered as an export port, particularly
after a (now closed) railway to Kankan opened.
Attractions in the city include the Guinea National Museum, several markets, the
Guinea Palais du Peuple, Conakry Grand Mosque which was built by Sekou Toure,
the city’s nightlife and the nearby Iles de Los.

Muslim festivals are timed according to local sightings of various phases of the moon and the dates given above are approximations.
During the lunar month of Ramadan that precedes Eid al-Fitr, Muslims fast during the day and feast at night and normal business
patterns may be interrupted. Many restaurants are closed during the day and there may be restrictions on smoking and drinking.
Some disruption may continue into Eid al-Fitr itself. Eid al-Fitr may last anything from two to 10 days, depending on the region.

Shopping
Most of the banks and many bureaux de change can be found along Cairo Road.
Although department stores in the major cities are poorly stocked, local markets sell a unique display of goods. Special purchases
include brightly coloured, distinctive Guinean clothes, woodcarvings, leather rugs in bold black-and-white designs, skins, locallyproduced records, calabashes and jewellery. Gueckedou is well known for its enormous market where travellers can buy absolutely
anything.
The Centre d’Appui à l’Autopromotion Féminine women’s cooperative outlet has a huge selection of interesting tie-dyed cloth.
The numerous vendors opposite Hôtel Camayenne sell all the usual crafts while the shops around the CAAF have a smaller selection
but higher quality. In general, it’s better to buy baskets, textiles and other crafts upcountry, as quality is as good or better and prices
are lower. Several woodcarving shops are found around town.
Marché Madina is one of West Africa’s largest markets and there is little you can’t find here, including some talented thieves.

31. How can we guarantee all Transferees will receive the same standard of service?
(staff relocating to main cities versus more rural areas?)
All Local Counsellors are really ‘local’ to the area where they assist Transferees. They are selected for their good knowledge of
their city area. All Local Counsellors are trained by EMC Network to follow our set pattern of delivering services using an inhouse ‘Training and Operations Manual’. All Local Counsellors are closely directed by Office Coordinators, ensuring a consistent
standard of service is delivered.
32. How does EMC Network handle Group Moves?
All relocations are handled by the same system of centralization. When required, we arrange for a member of our office team
to go to the location of a group move to be an in-house Coordinator, working from the Client Company’s premises as a point
of reference for HR, Transferees and their families. In main centres we have several Local Counsellors.
33. What ongoing support is provided for Transferees and their families?
EMC Network aim to equip your workforce to settle into their new environment as soon as possible.
Upon arrival they are presented with a local Information Pack. They are given access to our on-line City Specific Resource Guides
that provide general local information as well as specific local information once a suitable property has been located.
We have a 24-hour Emergency Helpline throughout the duration of the relocation.
We provide a 90-day complimentary phone line that can be extended throughout the duration of the assignment.
Our aim is to teach the Transferee how to live in his new city and to equip him to be as independent as possible.
