New York Trip
On Thursday 7th February, staff took a group of forty
pupils on an unforgettable trip to New York City.
Pupils braved the snowy conditions to explore a whole
host of exciting cultural activities, including a trip to
the Natural History Museum, an ice-skating session in
Central Park and of course, a little shopping! Teachers
also took pupils to some of the most famous sights
the city has to offer, such as the Statue of Liberty, the
Rockefeller Centre, the John Lennon Memorial and the
Freedom Tower at the World Trade Centre.
The experience helped to enrich their Performing Arts
study. Pupils watched a performance of the show Wicked
at one of the leading theatres in New York, alongside
taking in the other fantastic sites of Broadway. The
group then visited Ellen’s diner, where waitresses and
waiters entertained pupils with songs from hit Broadway
shows.

It was a very successful and enjoyable trip. We would like to
thank the parents for their support, the teachers for their hard
work organising and coordinating the event, and all the pupils
for the exemplary behaviour that they showed throughout
the trip.
You can follow the progress they made through the twitter
feed @LittleLeverNY13 or by joining the Facebook page Little
Lever School New York Trip 2013.
On Friday 15th March, Little Lever students showed their support for the
Comic Relief Appeal by washing cars, buying red noses and competing
in a charity sports event. Pupils raised a total of £333.82.
Over the past term Little Lever pupils have continued with their fund-raising activities and generously supported the following charities:
Winston’s Wish - £917.40 | Derian House - £463.00 | Red Nose Day - £333.82 | Little Lever over 65s Party Fund - £100.00
In addition, they also raised £231.57 to be spent on kindles for the school’s Media Centre.
High achievers
On Thursday 7th March, we received the results of the
examinations that some of our Year 10 and 11 students
sat. We were delighted to see that so many of our
students had done well.
Year 11 English and History results showed real
improvement, and the science module results indicated
that our Year 10 students have made a really great
start to their GCSE course.
Star Students
Congratulations to the following students, who all received
A* or A grades from their recent exam results.
Jilal Mahmood, Fayaz Doodhwala, Ben Mason, Zac
Wolstencroft, Cara Coulson-Ashworth, Either Abdalla, Abigail
Whitehead, Kira Stones, Mohammed Ali, Rebecca Taberner,
Sophie Nelson, Emma Baxendale, Charlotte Rhead.
Little Lever X-Factor
On Wednesday 6th March, students entertained parents
and fellow pupils in Little Lever’s annual ‘X-Factor’ contest.
The judges had a tough time choosing between the seven
fantastic performances. In the end they couldn’t decide
between Rebecca Cain and Thomas Melbourne so decided
to give a joint 1st place prize.
The audience vote was won by Shannon Oates, accompanied by Lewis Ball for their fantastic acoustic rendition of
Your Song by Ellie Goulding.
They were clear winners of the audience vote with 41%
of the vote, Thomas Melbourne was second with 33% and
Courtney O’Brien and Leonia Bates in third with 15%.

World Book Day
Thursday 7th March saw Little Lever School celebrate World
Book Day; a global day to celebrate reading and literature.
Staff from the English Department got into the spirit of the
event dressing as classic literary characters.
To start the day off tutors read opening pages to classic
novels, where pupils enthusiastically asked them to read on.
Afternoon registration saw teachers read out passages from
their all-time favourite books. It was a fantastic day and a great
reminder of how powerful and engaging books can be.
Marie Curie
Marie Curie has been busy putting together the
final plans for the Marie Curie ‘Wear Something
Yellow’ day on Thursday 21st March 2013.
Every student in school has produced a self
portrait drawing which is being printed on to tea
towels with the rest of their year group. These
have been sent off to ‘Chalks’ for production.
Orders have been taken from each year group.
We hope to beat the total from last year’s Marie
Curie day of £1,064.
Congratulations to Rebecca Cain (pictured right)
9BSU, who was a joint winner of the Performing
Arts’ X-Factor competition. A
fantastic achievement. Well
done.
Marie Curie currently finds
themselves in second place
on the house points table on
35,377 points, 235 points
behind Tomlinson.
Marie Curie students Kyle
Whittaker 7LIN and Sorrel
Berry 9BSU are currently the
second and third highest
points earners in the whole
school on 350 and 345
points respectively. Congratulations to them.

Octagon Workshop
Bolton’s Octagon Theatre ran school workshops last month to support
the work of their most recent play, Tull, which charts the life of Walter
Tull. Actors met Performing Arts pupils this term to perform a short
piece about racism in society and how it has changed over the years.
Pupils then participated in a short workshop with the actors.
Pupils chill after putting in some hard work
A select groups of pupils took part in a one hour skiing taster session at the Chill Factor e
as a reward for attending after school revision lessons and for further progress in their
subjects. They had a great time and were exceptionally well behaved.
MacMillan House
Twenty students visited Bolton Museum to
research the museum archives for information
on Little Lever and its surrounding areas. The
students used census material and newspaper
articles to gain an understanding of the recent
history of the area. The textiles curator allowed
the students to study the designs of a local
fashion designer which the students aim to use as
inspiration for their own creations.
Finally, training was also provided on interview and
recording techniques that will enable the students to record
the oral histories of their own families and local people.
The school is purchasing a green screen, recording and
editing system to produce a permanent record of the local
community’s recent history which will be donated to the
museum for future generations to use.
Sports Update
Our Year 8 rugby team remain unbeaten and have
qualified for the Bolton Schools’ final which will take
place after Easter.

team include captain Megan Duxbury, Abigail Mottershead, Beth Oxtoby, Jodie Pilling, Tessa Browne, Molly
Sidebottom, Nicole Gorman, Katie Morrell and Megan

McAllister came second overall in the intermediate category. The team also managed to come third
overall in the novice category with performances on
the floor and vault. The team included Lyndsay Booth,
