From The CARROLLTON rrhich is the terminus of the savannah, Griffin and North Alabama road, and lies beyond Newnan, on the other side of the Chattahoochee river. The town cro!/ns the summit of a series of lofty hi1ls and overfooks the country for many mifes around. It is magnificently located, and the seat of a dense white population. Now at length we have indeed struck a WHITE MANIS COUNTRY lrith the darkies only thinly scattered heie and there. The fand is divided up into small farms, often not exceeding fifty acres in extent, anil rarely reaching 2OO acres. The people are sturdy, hard worklng tilfers of the soil, and the very impersonation of rugged health. rn stature anal brarin some of them are veritabfe sons of /,,,.: 52 - t-,..r: Carrollton in the Year 1889, Cont'd. Anak. Their crops of corn and small grain are very promlsing, but it is feared that the stands of cotton lrill be bad throughout the region- Many fields have already been plo!,7ed up and planted over, and more of this work v,/iII be necessary. This is the result of recent frosts, and the protracted cool and dry spell. frish potatoes, green peas and other early vegetables are to be found in the greatest perfection and profusion. This is the county seat of Carroll, and enioys No fess than the trade of a large territory. THIRTY STORES do business here and trade appeared quite brisk for the season. Anong the merchants who read the Telegraph are Askerr, Bradfey & Co., !"/ho do an immense business, divided all over the city and its environs. The Merchantsr and Planters' Bank of Carrolltoo is one of the most prosperous institutions of that town. The officers are E. G. Kramer, president; L. c. Mandevifle, vice president, and Henry Lanier, cashier. They have recently commenced business on a capital of $25,000, but are already piling up a creditable surplus. Carrollton has inaugurated a system of public schools which will prove a blessing to hel people. Fifty-five hundredths of I per cent of the taxable values of the place, with the state's subsidy, furnish ampfe means to run them. Some idea of the numerical disparity betlreen the two races may be formed'l from the fact that out of a total of 110 schools in the county only 9 are colored. INDI]STRIES The town contains over 1,500 lnhabitants, two hotels, one sash and blind factory, one steam grist and flouring mill, two clever vreekly oe!"rspapers -- the Times and Free Press -- a building and Loan association, with Oscar Reese president and Henry Lanier secretary and treasurer, and wilf soon have a neat and commodious opeta house, now in process of construction, completed, with several new stores underneath. An oif and cotton mill are afso in contemplation. Two of the most prominent merchants, Messrs. L. C. Mandeville and E. G. Kramer, are absent at this tlrne on a visit to friends in Europe. Mr, J. B. Beal1 represents another furniture and undertaker's estabfishment and came originaffy from Cuthbert, Ga. He has a brother here afso engaged in the practice of law. Mr. E, sharpe, Jr., sells family and fancy groceries, ice and mineral waters, Messrs. Coleman & Benson are je\relers and dealers in fancy articles. Mr. o. W. Bagwell runs a first cfass livery and sales stable. THE BAR OF CARROLLTON is boLh numerous and able. During my visit the city court was in session, Judge Adamson presiding, with a large docket, both civil anC criminal, before him. The judge is a man of infinite humor, but his rulings \r'7ere always just and to the pointThe locaf bar is well nigh unanimous in its support of the Tefegraph. fn the list of subscribers may be included Messrs. Adamson & Jackson, o. J. Iqafker, J. L. Cobb, G. l"I. Austin, and those courteous officiafs, Hon. S. J. Brown, ordinary, and J. M. B. KeIly, the efficient clerk of the superior court. i.", -53_ Carrollton in the Year 1889, Cont'd. Mr. M. w- Upshaw has recently taken charge of the Commerciaf Hotel on the pubfic square. The building is in need of repairs, but within aII is comfortable and cosy to his well-fed guests. My o\rn lot waits east eith mine genial host of the Chambers House. As to the merits of the estabfishment, I will simply quote the opinion of a hypercritical Atlanta drummer. He said "1 can find no such grub as this in At1anta," and he was doubtless right. fn my drive around the city f was delighted lriLh the numerous picturesque views and many evidences of solid gro\ith and lmprovement. To the mayor of the City, the Honorable Oscar Reese, and indeed the merchants and citizens generalfy, I am iodebted for many kind and special attentions. Their rising little city has a bright future in prospect. From The Carroll Free Press, Thursday, october 13, THE MASON]C lNSTITUTE IN 1927 CAR OLL COUNTY By Dr. James D. The Masonic '1 56 - The Masonic Instltute in carroff County, Cont'd. The Masonic Lodges of the county have had an honored the development of the religiolls, social, and educational part in life of the county. without ostentation or the sounding of trumpets they have succored the indignant, the oppressed, and the distressed of this community. The institution has stood four square for the principles of democracy, and the greatest measure of individuaf freedom conslstent v/ith the good of the body potitic; it has not only respected but encouraged the religious sentiment of its members; it has supported with a strong arm the duly constituted civil authority; it has inculcated obedlence to 1aw and respect for the power:s that be; it has stood for social purity and a strict adherence to the slmple, though primitive and fundamental virtues. It has been a loyal frieod to education and general culture. Before the days of the public school, Carrofl Lodge sponsored the Carroflton Masonic Institute. In 1853, it put ln motion this school at Carrollton, the three principal officers of the Lodge being trustees of the school. The schoof was thus operated until 1871 , at which time, at the instance of one of our great pioneer educators, Major John M. Richardson, the school was chartered as Carroll Masonic Institute, with the three pr.incipal officers of Carroll Lodge as Trustees untit 1873. on the fast named date the fodge sold the school property to Major Rlchardson for the sum of five dollars, it appearing that the school coufd be made more efficient under the direction of a practicaf educator. This institution ltas the forerunner of Carrollton's spfendid public school system of today, and the Masonic Institution can modestly claim a ploneer's part in this substantial achievement.
