SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS 2013 - Quarter 4 SAN FRANCISCO POST NEWSLETTER PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE HOLIDAY GALA 2013 A SPECIAL THANK YOU ARCHITECTURE NEWS YOUNG MEMBERS NEWS SCHOLARSHIP NEWS EDITOR’S PICK OPPORTUNITIES MEMBERS UPDATE UPCOMING EVENTS 1 Photo courtesy of Randy Gon SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Accomplishments in 2013, Goals in 2014 Mr. Petroccitto has over 28 years of experience in multi-discipline engineering and project management. He has served as Project Director, Project Manager and Project Engineer for the planning, design, and environmental review and permitting of infrastructure, facilities, waterfront, urban redevelopment and transportation projects. He has participated in the design and management of over $100,000,000 of infrastructure for urban re-development in large cities in California, most notably the Mission Bay Redevelopment in San Francisco. He has extensive experience working for federal agencies including USACE San Francisco, NAVFAC Pacific, NAVFAC Southwest, Vandenberg AFB, National Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His design and management skills have enabled him to deliver projects, producing high quality designs and working cooperatively with multiple stakeholders including private developers, public review agencies and departments, regulatory agencies and construction contractors. The San Francisco Post accomplished much in 2013. The work started with a review of our By-Laws, which needed to be updated. Since SAME is a 501 C non-profit organization, the By-Laws are the rules by which we operate and are governed. We made minor changes to the By-Laws but the significant achievement was that we actually read the By-Laws and learned a lot. For instance, we realized that the By-Laws state that the President of the Post can serve for two years. That is why I am writing this article still as the President of the Post! Another positive result was that we recognized that we have two scholarship funds, the Charles Nicholas Scholarship Fund and the Bentley Fund. The Charles Nicholas Fund is used to award scholarships to Bay Area high school students who are entering colleges and universities to study architecture or engineering, and the Bentley Fund is used to reimburse Young Members for expenses related to obtaining their Professional Registration as an engineer or architect, or other professional licensure. We reviewed and updated the rules and process related to the Bentley Fund, with the effort led by Ed Curran. Thanks Ed! Nancy Barnes, as Program Director, organized a year full of programs for our monthly meetings. We had informative luncheons and also had the Family and Friends barbecue at the Bay Model in Sausalito. Many thanks to Nancy for her contributions. In 2014, she will be working on the Regional Conference to be held in Portland, Oregon in November. The Regional Conference is being hosted by the Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and Sacramento Posts. Dawn Antonucci, former Post President, organized the 2013 golf tournament and it was a great success netting the Post several thousand dollars. Thank you, Dawn! We made great strides toward earning the Streamers for 2013, including the Relationships and Recognition Streamer, the Education and Training Streamer, the Emergency Preparedness and Infrastructure Resilience Streamer, and the Leadership and Mentoring Streamer. Thanks to Elizabeth Copley for tracking our progress towards earning the Streamers. The activities related to earning the streamers are representative of the many good things that we do as a non-profit organization, and earning the streamers demonstrates that our Post is active and providing benefit to our members and our communities. 2 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS We know that we already earned the Membership Streamer for 2013, due to the outreach efforts made by Michael Anderson and Radhika Sreenivasan. Thanks to Michael and Radhika for their contribution! Another major accomplishment in 2013 was the quarterly production of this newsletter! Many thanks to Ginger Kelly and Alicia Deschamps for producing the excellent newsletter we have all had the pleasure of reading. Of course, the excellent year of 2013 was topped off by our Holiday Gala with our keynote speaker, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, and other dignitaries including Dr. Robert Wolff, Executive Director of SAME, Brigadier General C. David Turner, and Rear Admiral Charles Ray in attendance. Thanks to Susan Bedford for her incredible contributions to organize and execute this amazing event. David Turner Photo courtesy of Kurty Photography In 2014, we need to get broader participation from the Post to carry out our mission. Too much work falls into the hands of too few, so we will be reaching out to you for your contribution. Being an active participant in SAME can be a very rewarding experience in many ways, so we hope that you will join us in doing our Post work. Anthony A. The evening was a mild and clear night, the holiday cheer was flowing and the guests were packed in for a record attendance at the SAME Holiday Gala. Please read on for more about this incredible event... Photo courtesy of Randy Gon 4 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS DR. CONDOLEEZZA RICE HIGHLIGHTS SAN FRANCISCO POST’S HOLIDAY GALA By Susan Bedford Dr. Condoleezza Rice, 66th Secretary of State of the United States, delivered the keynote address to a capacity audience at the SF Post’s annual Holiday Gala, which was held Dec. 11, 2013 at the Marines’ Memorial Club in San Francisco. Dr. Rice spoke about the values and confidence instilled in her by her parents and their example and encouragement regarding public service. She also spoke about the benefit of solving our nation’s problems through conversation and discussion with a mutual openness to the ideas of others, and that leadership must be about harmonizing and finding common ground, bringing people together. The address was followed by a period of Q&A with the audience. Dr. Rice answered questions on topics ranging from national security to sports, in particular golf and football. She also discussed her work at Stanford, addressed the emerging participation of women in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math), and fielded questions on a myriad of other topics to include her decision to stay the course during the conduct of the Iraq War. Susan and Zack Bedford with Dr. Rice. Photo courtesy of Kurty Photography Other guests who delivered remarks included Rear Adm. Charles W. Ray, USCG, Deputy Commander, Pacific Area, U.S. Coast Guard; SF Post President Tony Petroccitto; SAME Executive Director Dr. Robert D. Wolff; and Brig. Gen. C. David Turner, USA, Commander, USACE South Pacific Division. 5 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS The Gala began with an elegant reception and exciting Silent Auction within the festively decorated Marine’s Memorial Club—but the highlight of the evening was an opportunity for guests to have pictures taken with Dr. Rice, with voluntary donations going to The Wounded Warrior Project. Tony Petroccitto, SF Post President, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Rice by presenting her with a SF Post coin as well as an SAME golf cap and golf balls. Tony noted that Dr. Rice’s attendance was the principal reason the Post was able to almost double the normal turnout of the annual Holiday Gala, which, most importantly, translated into record collections for its charitable causes, including the Post’s Scholarship Fund and the Wounded Warrior Project. Dr. Wolff presented me the RVP Medal on behalf of California RVP Dr. Vida Wright, P.E., F.SAME. The Gala’s traditional charitable activities also included a Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots collection and the ever-popular Door Prize Raffle. Thank you to all of the attendees, sponsors and volunteers who helped to make the SF Post Holiday Gala 2013 such a great event! Lou Stout and Tony Petroccitto Ms. Susan E. Bedford has over forty years of experience in the varied fields of public relations, retail sales, event management, photojournalism, and education. She spent several years as a teacher in both public and private schools; held the position of Manager at Ohmega Salvage in Berkeley for six years; served on the award-winning team of event managers for the Honda Motor Company national conventions; and produced photo shoots with numerous celebrities from Johnny Cash to Jimmy Buffett, for businesses from Jack Daniel’s to Gulf and Western, and for publications to include People, Time, and Newsweek Magazines. Susan proudly participated in a USO tour with Loretta Lynn in 1983 traveling throughout Germany and Egypt before spending a week with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean off the coast of Lebanon. The group was onboard the USS Independence when U.S. troops were attacked in Beirut. She holds a BA in Art History from Vanderbilt University and an MA in Art from George Peabody College with a focus on Art Education. She is active in SAME and the Vanderbilt Alumni Association. Susan presently serves as Director of Public Relations at MacDonald-Bedford LLC. She can be reached at [email protected] or 510.521.4020. 8 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS QUESTIONS TO DR. CONDOLEEZZA RICE There was a Q&A portion of the evening for Dr. Rice and we asked some of the participants, chosen to ask a question, to share their thoughts. Question: “In reviewing our nation’s military history—the Spanish-American War, World Wars 1 & 2, the Cold War, etc.--this time is different than any other. How do you foresee the current security measures that we have set in place impacting business in the U.S.?” Deena’s Feedback: Dr. Rice’s response was one that I had not expected; however, it broadened my view on the subject. My perception [initially] was that our national security measures made it more stringent for honest people to do business. From the small, minority-owned, disadvantaged business perspective, one would hardly expect to anticipate a bottom-line improvement from heightened security measures and much less so with additional paperwork. Surprisingly, I found it to be uplifting to hear Dr. Rice shed light on the positives that came out of our 9/11 security procedures. We generally tend to observe the negatives about certain issues and I admit that I only saw our security measures from the painful standpoint of what small businesses endure (i.e., more rules and regulations, more paperwork, more time and resources consumed- more of a headache). What I had previously overlooked was the increase in opportunity for honest businesspersons to transact in the marketplace and an incidental decrease for dishonest business practices. As Dr. Rice alluded, when we review the timeline and look at where our economy is today in comparison to the past, it appears that we’re doing better overall. We can look forward to future improvement. Deena V. Ene Deena V. Ene oversees the daily operations as Project Coordinator for Empire Engineering & Construction, Inc. She has a strong aptitude towards business and an extensive background in Investment Real Estate and Accounting which have further enhanced her skillset in her position with Empire. A San Francisco Bay Area native, Deena holds an A.S. in Business and Child Development from City College of San Francisco, a Diploma in Contextualized Leadership Development from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, and will complete her undergraduate studies with disciplines in Business Administration and Sociology in May 2014 at Liberty University. Her unyielding desire to be a beacon and a positive influence in all facets of life have contributed to setting Empire apart among its peers and to raise the bar in the construction industry. Outside of Empire, she is raising an amazing son, working with youth ministries at a local San Francisco church and continuously seeking to positively impact the world through small daily unannounced efforts. Deena can be reached at [email protected] or 415.430.6418. 9 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS Question: Given your extensive successful experience in your career of bringing diverse factions together when you served as Secretary of State, Presidential Security Advisor and Stanford University Provost, if the citizens entrusted you with being the President of the United States, how would you breakthrough the current gridlock in Washington? Roger’s Feedback: Dr. Rice shared her thoughts on how our Founding Fathers, in their wisdom, established a model government that recognized and appreciated the value and importance of compromise. She felt that many good things result when people stay in communication and purposefully compromise as a way to achieve meaningful progress. Dr. Rice felt we should bring people together to achieve a new spirit of compromise so we can move forward together. She also recommended to us that there is much untapped capabilities and talent at the state level that, as President, she would seek to better engage and leverage, and state’s can contribute much more and allow us to rely less on the Federal government being the primary problem solver and resource. [a round of enthusiastic applause from the audience] I felt that Dr. Rice responded from the perspective of a seasoned, pragmatic senior executive and, in so doing, distanced herself from those political factions, often so vocal today, that perceive compromise to be the ultimate dirty word. As experience executives and senior managers, we know the wisdom of Dr. Rice’s remarks and the reality that nothing gets done in life unless there is some measure of well conceived, honorable compromise that serves the greater good. He is an illustrator, pen & ink artist and accomplished and enthusiastic public speaker. Roger takes pride in being a 5th generation San Franciscan who was actually born on Bush Street. Roger can be reached at [email protected]. 10 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS Question: After being asked various political questions, I decided to lighten the mood a bit. I believe my question went something along these lines: “Dr. Rice, at this time next year you will be among the inaugural participants in the world’s next great contemplative body--the College Football Playoff selection committee. What do envision will be your greatest challenge on this committee?” Dr. Rice’s answer, as were all her answers at the gala, was direct and insightful. After describing her personal ties to football and conveying her clear passion for the sport, she explained that she intends to bring a “strength of schedule” component into the discussion, similar to college basketball’s RPI statistic. Her hope is that this will diminish the incentive for top teams to schedule easy out-of-conference games to pad results with blowout scores. I thought this displayed Dr. Rice’s belief that incentives matter, be they in geopolitics or sports. Andrew Teufel is a private investor residing in San Francisco, CA. This symbolizes that they are with us, here in spirit. We should never forget the brave men and women who answered our nation’s call and served the cause of freedom in a special way. We are ever mindful that the sweetness of enduring peace has always been tainted by the bitterness of personal sacrifice. We are compelled to never forget that while we enjoy our daily pleasures, there are others who have endured the agonies of pain, deprivation and death. Rachel Coyner preparing to read “The Fallen Soldier’s Table” We would like to explain the meaning of the items on this special table. • The table is round - to show our everlasting concern for our fallen comrades. • The tablecloth is white - symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to duty. • The single red rose, displayed in a vase, reminds us of the life of each of our fallen comrades, and the loved ones and friends of these comrades who keep the faith. • The vase is tied with a yellow ribbon, symbol of our continued determination to remember our fallen comrades. • A slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of the bitter fate of those who will never return. • A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by the families of those who have sacrificed all. • The Holy Book represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country. • The glass is inverted, they cannot toast with us at this time. • The chair is empty because they are no longer with us. Let us remember - and never forget their sacrifice. May they and their families ever be watched over and protected.” 12 SAN FRANCISCO POST SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS SUSAN BEDFORD AWARDED RVP MEDAL San Francisco, CA - Ms. Susan E. Bedford SAME SF Post Holiday Gala Chair 15 SAN FRANCISCO POST ARCHITECTURE NEWS SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS A LETTER FROM SAME NATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE COMMITEE (APC) SAME San Francisco Post Architects, As you might know in November 2012, for the first time in the history of SAME, it established a national Architectural Practice Committee with a mission “to promote architectural practice within SAME, broaden the organization’s exposure in the architectural community, and recruit more architects, along with expanding networking and mentoring opportunities”. In the past year, the committee has initiated the following activities. I am encouraging you all to participate in these events as much as you can. 1. Hold Quarterly Web Conferences. Web conferences brief members on the committee’s initiatives and progress, and offer a way to earn one AIA continuing education unit (CEU) by providing a topic-focused presentation. 2. Organize Joint Engineer Training Conference & EXPO (JETC) Architectural Orientated Education Sessions. The JETC provides an opportunity for members to meet face to face and network, welcome the new Urbahn Medal recipient, and earn many AIA CEU by attending presentations and lectures. 3. Establish Service Branch Liaisons for USACE, NAVFAC, and AFCEC. We all agree that having initiatives that benefit service branch architects is one of the essential components of success. To that end, each of the three service branch liaisons has been identified. 4. Establish an Architectural Subcommittee Connecting AIA and SAME. The committee is working to establish a point of contact (POC) for the Architectural Practice Committee for each interested SAME post. The objective of utilizing POCs is to implement the committee’s initiatives in local posts, as well as to connect SAME with local AIA chapters. So far we have over 20 POCs at local posts. 5. Develop Architectural Topic Webinars for Continuing Education. The committee sponsors architectural and construction-related webinars. These courses will be open to all interested design professionals. 6. Publish an Architectural Practice Committee Quarterly Newsletter. A new quarterly newsletter will highlight important ideas and updates and provide members with a spot to profile their work and firms, and their relevant practices. The newsletter can be viewed and downloaded on the committee webpage www.same.org/apc 7. Maintain an Architectural Practice Committee Webpage. Our new dedicated committee page on the SAME website includes announcements, events, and activities, along with valuable architectural resources. Everyone is encouraged to visit the site and contribute ideas to ensure the site remains fresh and informative. www.same.org/apc Currently, the APC has no POC at your post. I am hoping to change that by asking you to consider volunteering your time to be our POC, working together with our committee leadership and your local SAME board to promote architectural initiatives at your post level. If you are interested in being part of our committee local leadership, please contact me or our collaboration with AIA Vice Chair Paula Loomis. JJ Tang, AIA SAME national Architectural Practice Committee Chair HDR Architecture, Inc. [email protected] 16 SAN FRANCISCO POST ARCHITECTURE NEWS SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE COMMITEE (APC) NEWSLETTER Make sure to take a look at Volume 2 of the SAME National APC newsletter. David Packard, SAME APC Vice chair for Communications briefly describes the content of this latest issue: If there is a focus to this issue, it might be that of the role public architects can and do play in the profession. Scott Wick, AIA, LEED AP, PMP, the Chief Architect of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, presents an article on one aspect of sustainability, third party certifications, that involves public architects. In addition, we continue to see progress in the relationship between AIA and SAME and Paula Loomis has shared some information as she assumes a new position on the AIA National Board of Directors. Local Posts are stepping up to share architecture activities occurring at local SAME Posts, some in conjunction with AIA chapters. Check out the summary of an article on public architects from AIA’s “Architect” magazine, with comments by our own Ed Gauvreau. Finally, as in past issues, we’ve updated committee reports, added yet more features, and provided the information for the upcoming quarterly conference call (with FREE webinar) and Continuing Education opportunities. That was how I felt having the honor to join some of our SAME SF Post Board members and Dr. Bob Wolff, our SAME Executive Director, the morning of our Holiday Gala on December 11, 2013. We started out with introductions and then veered off to discussing what everyone was reading in the industry. LTC John Baker mentioned Walk-Run at Work. Others mentioned TME, ENR and The Admirals. Dr. Wolff shared some stories from when he was at West Point, and the general advice was always REST: RE ST ead xercise leep hink Very good advice! Dr. Wolff asked how the post membership and attendance was going and the discussion led to the challenge in the San Francisco Bay Area due to the decrease in military presence. We are very fortunate we do have the active U.S. Coast Guard Station in Oakland-Alameda and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco District led by LTC John Baker. We talked about how we can reach out to other State and Local agencies to bring in more potential members and speakers as some options. We also discussed doing joint meetings with other organizations. As PresidentElect of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, I know we have had joint events with SAME on a national level. This is a great idea and there are many other organizations we can consider such as ASCE and California Maritime Port Authority. Another great idea was shared to reach out to the Universities that have ROTC, and get more student outreach. We would like your input for any ideas you might have for upcoming meetings and networking events. We would also like to have members contribute in future newsletters. Please send your inquiries to Ginger Kelly, [email protected]. Here’s to a great 2014!
