An
introduction
What you need to know before you get started
Of all ages to teach, two- and threeyear-olds are a highlight! Watching
their brains kick into high gear
and their vocabulary explode are
rewarding enough, but then add in
their wonder and enthusiasm and
you have the perfect set-up for a
delightful and memorable year!
Planning
You will want to pace your child
so that she is constantly learning,
but not overwhelmed. Rather than
a sometimes-overwhelming daily
planner, our family prefers to use a
weekly check-off sheet. That way
we can flex with each day’s nap
time, extra activities... but nothing
gets lost in the shuffle. We’ve
included one in this packet which
you can simply copy as needed.
Character First
Another thing to keep in
mind is that, more than
educating your child,
you are teaching this
active tot how to learn.
Build her attention span
up little by little. Work
on perseverance when
she wants to fling the
puzzle across the table.
Feed her curiosity for all
things moving. Reward hard work,
encourage language development,
and insist on obedience. These are
more than just life-skills, they are
part of character development and
as such are much more important
than any academic skill alone.
Reading Second
Make it your goal to spend some
time reading with your child every
day. We have included several
books in your kit to get you started,
each among the most valuable
books we’ve seen for this age, with
hours of conversation and learning
potential. Supplement them with
books from your library or your
family’s collection.
Reading Is Only Half Of It
Regardless of what you choose
to read, make it part of your daily
routine to sit down and read
together. Not only does it whet her
own appetite for reading, but one
of the very best things it will do is
allow her to mentally experience
situations and concepts she
wouldn’t run into on her own. So
reading alone is only half of your
assignment —talk about what you
are reading!
And More
Of course, there are many other
things to discover with your child,
and we’ll give you some information
on each. But emphasizing reading
will serve your child for the rest
of her life, so it is worth planning
around!
siblings
If your toddler is blessed with older
siblings, keep them involved in her
education. Not only will she have
more opportunities to learn, but
they will learn the invaluable skill of
teaching. We suggest going over
the weekly chart and highlighting
the things you’d like them to
do. (For instance, everything
highlighted yellow is for big brother
to do, and the ones in green are
reserved for big sister.) Then let
them check the work off as they go.

GUIDES AND IDEAS
These two titles each have unique specialties, and together they provide a framework for Timberdoodle’s preschool Curriculum Package.
Active Baby, Healthy Brain
Active Baby, Healthy Brain is the most practical handbook for all parents
enthralled with every aspect of their little one’s intellectual and physical
development. It is simple and to the point, with ideas that are
quick and easy to implement. Each activity is presented
with detailed, step-by-step instructions, and the appealing
illustrations help to make everything crystal-clear.
And while the overall tone is one of having fun with your
little one -- and you will -- the author makes sure you
understand the crucial connections between the activities
and the development of your child’s body and brain. You’ll
also learn how to incorporate toys, music, and games in your
preschooler’s day. Busy parents will cheer when they hear
that no single activity takes more than two minutes, and all
that’s required is ten minutes a day. How easy is that?
Let’s Play and Learn Together
Bursting with games, activities, tips, ideas, and songs, Let’s
Play and Learn Together also provides valuable information
about child development from birth to preschool, and the best activities for
your child at each age and stage. Playful parenting makes living with these
treasures under five years of age a delight; Let’s Play and Learn Together
will show you how.

preReading
Here are our top picks for language development,
discussion, and allaround enjoyment.
G is for Goat
Grab your preschooler and G is for
Goat, and enjoy a brief escape from
everyday craziness with a pleasant
barefoot shepherd girl and her lovable,
frisky goats.
Big Book Of Things To Spot
There is no end to what a preschooler
can learn from this impressive title that
is crammed with over 4000 things to
spot on a farm, in the town, pertaining
to animals, or relevant in history.
Scheduling
We suggest reading through one
alphabet book a week. Most libraries
are full of them, and since we know
what it’s like to live on a limited
budget, we’ve included just one to get
you started—G is for Goat. Whether
you read the book in a single sitting or
spread it out over multiple days, see
how many times you can read through
each week’s book and how many new
things come up in each reading.
While searching the colorful,
beautifully illustrated pages, your child
will learn the names of both animals
and objects. You will also discuss
numbers, counting, colors, shapes,
and differences.
Just doing a page or two a day will
enrich your preschooler’s vocabulary
in a way that you both will find
enjoyable.
Included
1001 Animals to Spot
1001 Things to Spot on the Farm
1001 Things to Spot in the Town
1001 Things to Spot Long Ago
My First Animal Signs
The adorable illustrations in My First
Animal Signs accomplish the first
step of language development, that
of making a connection between
the word and what it means. And
because the illustrations are so
engaging, preschoolers will want to
‘read’ the book over and over again,
accomplishing the second step
towards learning a language, that of
repetition. Most preschoolers will love
demonstrating the signs as well, since
they thrive on active learning!
Topics
This absolutely gorgeous board
book depicts ASL signs for fortyeight animals, illustrated clearly with
bright, cheerful drawings of babies
and toddlers, along with a variety of
domestic, wild, and exotic animals.

The Music Box
Everyone agrees that music is important to a preschooler’s development, and finally it doesn’t need to be difficult to think of a new song or rhyme.
The Music Box: Songs, Rhymes, and Games for Young Children
Rhymes are one of the most enjoyable ways to give our children a rich and robust
vocabulary. Not only that, rhymes help our brains recall words and facts,
a perfect workout for developing brains. And because actions, movement,
or dances are associated with children’s rhymes and songs, your
preschooler’s gross-motor skills will flourish!
Once you understand the importance of songs, rhymes, and finger plays
to your child’s education, you’ll realize the handful you know are sorely
inadequate for the task. The Music Box’s wealth of options will make this
part of your preschooler’s education fresh and enjoyable. Do you like the
words of a song, but are you unfamiliar with the tune? The Music Box
also includes a list of high quality recordings available online, so you can
listen to most songs before teaching them. As parents, we want to give our
children every opportunity to excel. The Music Box not only makes it easy,
but fun as well.
TOPICS
The Music Box uses songs, rhymes, finger plays, and movement to invite young
children into music, language, and imaginary play. Includes 180 engaging songs,
finger plays, rhymes, songs, and games inside a sturdy hinged box. Each is on
a laminated card with the words, instructions, music and chords, and delightful
illustrations for each song or rhyme. Organize the Music Box cards the way you
want: by subject, alphabetically, or numerically with the included tab cards.

Thinking
Skills
A comprehensive and engaging workbook alongside a hands-on 2-d to 3-d game will give you and your child hours of brainbuilding excitement!
Day and Night
Logic for toddlers? I love this Smart Game! Renowned for
their single-player games for the older child, Smart Games
now has games for the littlest thinker. Day and Night Logic
Game is a charming game of logic using colors, shapes, and
silhouettes. Each challenge is incrementally more difficult
than the last and is geared for your child’s growing and
developing thinking and motor skills.
COVERS
The twenty-four vibrant Day cards clearly indicate where
each colorful piece should be stacked. The more advanced
Night cards show only silhouettes. Day and Night focuses
on developing your child’s visual sequencing and spatial
problem solving. Day and Night includes ten chunky wooden
puzzle pieces with twenty-four Day and twenty-four Night
challenges. For eighteen months to four years.
Includes
• Rugged Wooden Stand
• 10 Colorful Wooden Blocks
• Full Color Booklet with 48
Puzzles
Scheduling
Work your preschooler through
the puzzles, introducing up
to two new ones each week,
and reviewing as needed until
she can work the puzzles
from previous weeks without
assistance.
BUILDING THINKING SKILLS BEGINNING
Happy, colorful illustrations make this a highly attractive
program for any young child. The variety of delightful
exercises ensures that this terrific book will give your
child a solid foundation for academic excellence.
Scheduling
An easy seven pages a week will put you on a path for
completing the book this year.
Covers
Vocabulary, pre-reading, pre-writing, math, logic, spatial,
and auditory processing skills of preschoolers. It teaches
children to use organized analysis instead of guesswork
to solve problems as it develops critical thinking skills
necessary for success in reading, math, writing, and
science. May be used with attribute blocks (optional).

Mathematical
Reasoning
“My 2- and 4-year-old
daughters completed
Mathematical Reasoning
Beginning 1 last year. My-twoyear old adored this math
book and always wanted to
do more pages... The colorful
illustrations helped to keep her
interest.” A.G. in WA
Beginning Mathematical Reasoning Book 1
Most parents know that a child who only memorizes math
facts without really understanding math will find progressively
complex concepts more and more difficult to understand. But
what they erroneously think is that such problems arise about
the time a child is memorizing the multiplication table. Not
so. From the first introduction to mathematical concepts, it is
important to help your child understand how math works.
With 240 pages of quick, straightforward problems to build
mathematical reasoning skills in preschool students, these
highly motivational activities will take your child beyond mere
drill work by using step-by-step, discussion based problem
solving until your child is able to reason his way through any
mathematical problem. Concepts spiral gradually so that
children do not forget as they go!
Scheduling
Plan on six or seven pages a week to complete this in a
school year.
Covers:
Addition, counting, fractions, language, logic, matching, order,
patterns, shapes, subtraction, and more.

PUzzles & more
Often sadly overlooked, puzzles are amazingly helpful for a preschooler’s development as they work on their visual perception, fine-motor
skills, visual memory,
colors, spacial perception,
and so much more.
Hape Zoo Animals Block Puzzles
Lauri A-Z Puzzles
Colorback Sea turtle maze
The cube puzzle, a classic favorite of
children, has been kicked up a notch with
Hape’s new Zoo Animals Block Puzzle.
A typical nine-block puzzle challenges
kids to re-create six familiar animals. But
animals on the Hape Zoo Animals Block
Puzzle are not constrained to the classic
square shape. Instead, the giraffe puzzle
is tall and the alligator is long.
Begin by using these as fabulous
perception puzzles (just think of how
similar E & F, O & Q, R & P, and M &
N are). It won’t take long for your little
one to be able to pick out each letter.
This is yet another way to work your
child’s pincer grasp, concentration,
and color matching. At first, just
dragging the colorful beads will
be enough of a challenge for your
child, but once she’s ready for more,
guide her in placing each one into its
matching “home” in the turtle’s shell.
How To USe
The nine wooden cubes make six
different animals when assembled.
At first, preschoolers will simply enjoy
stacking the wooden blocks. Next, let
your child find you the right side while you
assemble the blocks. Ready for more?
Help these beginners out by turning the
nine blocks so that all the backgrounds
are the same. Soon they will be happily
assembling the animals themselves and
all you’ll need to do is ooh and aah over
their finished work!
Older children can match lower case
and upper case, put together words,
and use the puzzles for phonics
games.
You will not find a better “touch, feel,
and fit” alphabet, or a more durable
one for those children who delight in
pounding the pieces in. And they all
do, don’t they?
Includes
A-Z UPPERCASE and lowercase.
When she is ready for even more,
ask her to place specific colors in
other locations. How well does she
remember your instructions?
Skills Taught
Colors, pincer grasp, persistence,
verbal directions, memory, and more.

Wedgits
From stacking to sorting, colors,
following directions,
memory skills, and more,
Wedgits are the perfect tool. Plus, the whole family will find them irresistible!
Wedgits Starter Tote
Wedgits is one of those rare finds. A multi-dimensional building set, Wedgits
pieces fit perfectly together without interlocking help. Most children are
immediately drawn to the sturdy plastic pieces and eagerly explore the various
stacking, nesting, and balancing patterns. There is an amazing amount of spatial
and geometric learning to be discovered with the use of Wedgits.
INCLUDES
•
20 primary-colored Wedgits building blocks
•
Set of 48 design cards
GETTING STARTED
There is so much you can do with this kit! Start very simply, by coaching your
child to copy you as you build the simplest designs, either from the cards or
from your imagination. Once that is easy, help her build directly from the card.
Her 2-D to 3-D skills will improve quickly, so be ready to let her try it on her own,
giving her more challenging cards as she is ready.
On alternate days have her copy a model you’ve made. When that becomes too easy, let your child study your model, then cover it up and have her replicate the model without looking at yours again. What a challenge!
10|
Workbooks
Whether your preschooler has long been eager to have her very own workbooks or it takes her awhile to warm up to the idea, you want to start with short,
colorful, rewarding activities. These books are perfect!
I Can... Toddler
Children will have fun cutting, pasting, tracing, and coloring their way to
scholarly success throughout this series! Simple tasks; large, colorful
illustrations; and toddler-friendly topics; it doesn’t get any easier than
this, the perfect introduction to worksheets!
The bite-sized portions mean your child won’t be overwhelmed, while
the practical skills will serve her forever. Try to help your child do at
least one page a day; this is a skill best developed with regular practice.
Kumon My Book of Easy Mazes

of mazes? Mazes allow your child the
opportunity to practice basic pencil control
in an enjoyable, exciting way. These pencil

We’ve included the best kid scissors and special jumbo easy grip pencils since Everything is easier when you have the right tools!

Science
Every child seems to be born a scientist, with the natural instinct to explore everything. Mix &
Measure Kit will help you nurture that tendency .
Mix and Measure kIT
The Primary Science Mix & Measure Kit, with its
innovative child-friendly measuring tools, is an amazing
addition to any homeschool lab. While your child is
mixing up batches of Mystery Goo, Bubbles, Puffy Paint,
Trail Mix, Three-Day Clay, and Slime Stencils, she will
be gaining a basic understanding of measurement
vocabulary and equivalencies.
The Primary Science Mix & Measure activity cards are
easy to follow, fun, and provide lots of measurement
experience. A parent or older sibling may need to assist
your child at times, but the more opportunities she is
given to explore and practice with the measurement
tools on her own, the better her understanding of the
principles involved.
MORE IDEAS
We would start by just letting your child play with the
measuring cups and spoons. We started with rice,
but any number of items could be poured: beans,
lentils, wheat, sand, popcorn, aquarium rocks or sand,
Instasnow, pom-poms, and, of course, water! For the
more adventurous try using colorful drink mix or even a
bit of pudding mix for added colors/textures. Talk about
the measurements and compare them. Bring out the
scale and weigh what you are measuring. Put aside the
measuring cups and weigh different items from around
the house. Take the measuring cups and spoons to the
kitchen and let your child measure out ingredients for
her favorite recipes. Take everything but the scale out
to their wading pool in summer... the options are limited
only by your imagination!
Includes
Included in the Mix & Measure Set are three colorful,
self-standing measuring spoons; six sturdy measuring
cups; one bowl with lid; ten double-sided cards; and a
scale. Some simple household supplies, listed on the
cards, are needed to complete the activities.
Scheduling
Plan to bring out Mix & Measure a couple times a
week for play, exploration, or to complete one of the
activities on the cards.
13|
Oball
No toddler program would be complete without a ball, and oball is far and away the most versatile ball we’ve ever found–you can even make bubbles with it!
The Big Oball
Bigger circles, bigger holes, bigger ball, bigger action.
Everything about the Big Oball is bigger. Yet it is just as
smooth and shiny and just as indestructible as the Original
Oball. Kick it, stomp it, crush it, and the Big Oball bounces
right back to a perfectly formed sphere.
Made of silicone, the Oball is lightweight and durable; just
pop it in your dishwasher when the need arises
(and it will)!
Beyond catching, throwing, and kicking skills, the Big Oball
is also just the right weight to bowl for empty water bottles.
Fill them up a bit if you need more stability or your child is
ready for an additional challenge. You can also color the
bottles or label them by number, shape, or letter, then aim
for a particular bottle.
In the summer, try making bubble mix and use the Big
Oball as a giant bubble net.
Covers
Hand-eye coordination, motor planning, reflexes, and,
depending on what you play, the important lifeskills of
sportsmanship and taking turns!
