BRASOV METROPOLITAN AREA PUBLIC TRANSPORT OVERVIEW Presently, urban areas, like Brasov, begin to think about the future and the sustainable development of their transport system. As economic and social development is on a rising trend, this means that there is a constantly increasing demand for mobility, which the public transportation services cannot cover efficiently. In this respect, families, most of them living in the rural suburbs of the main city, have, in general, 1 or 2 small or medium vehicles which they use for the mobility of both the children (trips to and from school) and the adults (daily commute to work, shopping, small trips within the city area, etc). This behavior leads to congestions in traffic, which not only slows the speed of travel and increases the amount of time spent by going from point A to point B, but also creates delays for the buses providing public transportation services. In the same trend, we have to take into consideration the fact that the commercial and service sector has developed at the edge of the city, between the major urban community in the centre and the rural communities around it. The main issues affecting mobility within the city of Brasov are: • Traffic congestions in some areas of the city, during daily commuting hours • Inadequate parking system. The number of parking spaces is much lower than the number of cars, especially in the commercial area and in the historic center. • The historic center of Brasov is a challenge from the traffic point of view – not only that the streets are narrow, and the traffic affects the old historic buildings, but the historic centre is the only passage towards the SCHEI neighborhood • The road to the most popular mountain resort in Romania starts from the center of the city, and those who want to go in the resort must cross the entire city. • The development around the city means that new transfer terminals must be created at the edges of the city. Territorial setup of the metropolitan territory The metropolitan territory is comprised of 3 cities (Brasov, Sacele, Codlea), 3 towns (Ghimbav, Predeal, Rasnov) and 10 rural communes (Crizbav, Halchiu, Bod, Harman, Prejmer, Sanpetru, Tarlungeni, Cristian, Vulcan, Feldioara) One important feature of the Brasov Metropolitan Area is the fact that the „backbone” of the territory is represented by an urban axis comprised of Brasov, Sacele, Ghimbav and Codlea. Some aspects of territorial cohesion of the area are provided below: The following map presents the road and railway infrastructure in the area In order to provide an idea regarding the mobility demand in the territory, you will find below a table with the population of each community in the metropolitan area: Populaţia BRAŞOV CODLEA SACELE GHIMBAV PREDEAL RÂŞNOV BOD CRISTIAN HĂLCHIU HĂRMAN PREJMER SÂNPETRU TĂRLUNGENI CRIZBAV VULCAN FELDIOARA 276,914 24,649 33,041 5,483 5,615 16,384 4,569 4,575 4,751 5,269 9,276 4,327 8,411 2,419 4,759 7,100 A lot of social infrastructure is found on the major urbanization axis, as presented in the images below: 2010 statistics: Mopeds – 3.107 Motorcycles – 4.764 Vehicles with maximum 8 seats – 98.302 Vehicles for passengers transport with more than 8 seats and less than 5 tones of mass -771 Vehicles for freight transport under 3,5 t – 9.856 Vehicles for freight transfer over 3,5 t – 2.691 Agriculture tractors – 1.337 Estimated traffic increase is 20% for every 5 years between 2010 and 2020 Public transport general information A. B. The metropolitan area The public transport in the metropolitan area, outside of Brasov city is organized at a county level. Various routes are assigned to private transport providers as a result of a public procurement procedure. The route is assigned to the transport provider for a period of three years, after which a new tendering procedure is organized. Below there are o series of information regarding the transport between Brasov and the surrounding communities. Nr. The public transport should take into account that some services such as education, health, culture are provided in the Brasov City area, which generates a certain demand for transport. The commune of Prejmer in the North east host a very important industrial park which draws a significant work force from Brasov City. Also, the entire north side of the metropolitan territory (Halchiu, Bod, Harman, Sanpetru) could provide work force in Prejmer and create a new northern axis of development covering the north east and the north west of the metropolitan area. The road to Predeal is a mountain road, narrow (one lane for each direction) and it is one of the most congested roads in the country, especially during weekends, as it links the capital of Romania with the most important 5 mountain resorts in the country. The transport companies unload their passengers at the edge of Brasov city, where they board the in city busses.
