and your business, while also working to retain and grow the local
economy. As you review where we are and what’s happening in the

Bryan Horner
Once again, the Chamber’s annual banquet on January 26 was a Chairman of the Board
sell-out, and it was great to honor our hard-working volunteers
while also celebrating the accomplishments of the past year.
Special thanks to overall keynote banquet sponsor Verizon, and entertainment sponsors American Classifieds and Classy Cleaning.
The Cornerstone luncheon January 21 gave us a helpful overview of how the Chamber’s programs focusing on economic development, legislative affairs and major
event tourism are providing outstanding returns on the dollars we are investing. Please
contact any board member or staff member if you’d like to learn more about our Cornerstone efforts.
As we continue exploring our 2010 theme Working Together Works, I hope you will
take advantage of one or more of the following opportunities this month:

hear featured speaker State Representative Drew Darby’s current assessment of where
we are and where we’re going in state government. Make your $15 reservation by

Each year the U.S. Cavalry Association keeps the spirit and
heritage of the cavalry alive through its National Cavalry
Competition. Dozens of riders, from novice re-enactors to
expert military equestrians,
compete in a number of
categories, including
mounted saber, mounted
pistol, and military equitation. This wonderful competition will be held in San Angelo this year, from September 30th to October 3rd, and
you won’t want to miss it.
The event measures accuracy in uniforms, tack, equipment
and performance. Whether participants are re-enacting the
1846-48 Mexican War or the 1860’s-90 Plains Indian
Wars, the event promises to be remarkably colorful and
precise, while celebrating the partnership of horse and
rider.

Showdown Needs Your Help
On June 26 and 27th, the fourth annual Showdown
in San Angelo will race into town. There are many new and
exciting changes to the event this year, including the recent
announcement that Lucas Oil Productions will be televising
the San Angelo dragboat races nationally on Speed TV. The
honor of being the only race in Texas to be televised brings
with it many corporate sponsors, more racers, and an audience nationwide.
However, televised or not, the Showdown in San Angelo cannot take place without the help of approximately
450 volunteers. The Chamber has already begun work filling volunteer spots and is looking to our membership for
additional help. Businesses are encouraged to come out to
volunteer and simultaneously market your business by
sporting your favorite company gear. If your business
would like to volunteer, please call Jennifer at the Chamber,
655-4136, ext. 220.

MINUTES
TO DEFINE WHO WE ARE AS A NATION
The Census: A Snapshot
4
What: The census is a count of everyone residing in the
United States.
Who: All U.S. residents must be counted-both citizens and
non citizens.
When: You will receive your questionnaire in March 2010 either
by U.S. mail or hand delivery. Some people in remote areas will
be counted in person.
i
Why: The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every
10 years to count the population and determine the number of
seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Flow: Households should complete and mail back their
questionnaires upon receipt. Households that do not respond
may receive a replacement questionnaire in early April. Census
takers will visit households that do not return questionnaires to
take a count in person.
A Complete Count:
The Importance of Census Data

Frequently Asked Questions
1. 0. Who should fill out the census questionnaire?
A. The individual in whose name the housing unit is owned
or rented should complete the questionnaire on behalf of
every person living in the residence, including relatives and
non-relatives.
0. How will the 2010 Census differ from previous censuses?
A. In 2010, every residence will receive a short questionnaire
of just 10 questions. More detailed socioeconomic information
previously collected through the decennial census will be asked
of a small percentage of the population through the annual
American Community Survey. To learn more about the American
Community Survey, visit www.census.gov.
0. How are census data used?
A. Census data determine the number of seats each state will
have in the U.S. House of Representatives. Census data also can
help determine the allocation of federal funds for community
services, such as school lunch programs and senior citizen
centers, and new construction, such as highways and hospitals.
4. 0. What kind of assistance is available to help people
complete the questionnaire?
A. 2010 Census questionnaire language assistance guides are
available in a variety of languages. Questionnaire Assistance
Centers QAC will also assist those unable to read or understand
the questionnaire. Large-print questionnaires are available to
the visually impaired upon request, and a Teletext Device for
the Deaf TDD program will help the hearing impaired. Contact
your Regional Census Center for more details about the types of
assistance available and for QAC locations.
0. How does the Census Bureau count people without a
permanent residence?
A. Census Bureau workers undertake extensive operations
to take in-person counts of people living in group quarters,
such as college dormitories, military barracks, nursing homes
and shelters, as well as those who have been displaced by
natural disasters.
