ACTION REPORT www.portraitsofsanangelo.com Volume 38 SAN ANGELO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PHONE 325.655.4136 418 W. AVENUE B FAX 325.658.1110 SAN ANGELO, TEXAS 76903 E-MAIL [email protected] INTERNET : www.sanangelo.org Number 11 November 2014 November Luncheon to Feature Diversity Recognition Awards C ol. Kimberlee Joos will be the keynote speaker at the November Luncheon, during which four minority or female-owned or managed businesses will be recognized for demonstrating excellence in diversity in the workplace. The Diversity Awards Luncheon is an annual program of the Chamber’s Diversity Committee, and awardees are selected from nominations submitted by the Chamber membership. Col. Kimberlee P. Joos commands the 17th Training Wing, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. A Joint Center of Excellence, Goodfellow is the home for the Department of Defense Fire Academy and multi-service intelligence technical training. The wing is responsible for training more than 15,000 firefighting and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance warriors annually for the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, other government agencies, and allied nations. In addition to Goodfellow, Colonel Joos has command responsibility for three geographicallyseparated units in California, Arizona and Florida. She manages real property, equipment, supplies and contracts in excess of $1.09 billion and has an annual operating budget exceeding $106 million. She also provides support to Army, Navy and Marine Corps on-base units, as well as seven other partner organizations and Angelo State University's Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. Details Rather than focusing on Goodfellow AFB, Col. Joos’ remarks will center Tuesday, November 11, 2014 on her personal story and thoughts about leadership as part of the Diversity 11:30 a.m. - McNease Convention Center Luncheon program. Specialist November brings to mind a season of thankfulness, and as new grandparents this year, that certainly describes Danna's and my mindset. I'm sure you have plenty to be grateful for as well, and as a community there are some very obvious blessings. Many of them were described in the annual chamber membership survey, so thanks to all of you who participated in the Rick Mantooth 2014 membership survey last month. Chairman of the Board Otherwise last month, we had a sellout crowd at the October luncheon at Bentwood Country Club as State Representative Drew Darby gave us a very frank and practical preview of the State legislative session beginning in January. The luncheon was co-sponsored by Devon Energy and Dierschke & Dierschke, REALTORS, and Shannon Medical Center. Olive’s Nursery gave members a great Business @ Happy Hour networking opportunity on Oct. 7. Then, the Laura Bush Institute for Women’s Health hosted a wonderful networking session (tailgate party!) at the Oct. 28 Business @ Happy Hour. Members also benefitted from an excellent session on how to improve your bottom line by employing workers with disabilities in a presentation from Patricia Ray of the Texas Department of Assistive & Rehabilitative Services at the Oct. 21 Business Brown Bag Luncheon. Carrying on an important Chamber legacy that benefitted me over twenty years ago was the beginning of the 32nd annual Leadership San Angelo class last month, informing current and future leaders of challenges and opportunities in the San Angelo area. Your board and other leaders also spent two days working on a three-year strategic plan based upon your comments in the membership survey and other opportunities in our future. Stay tuned for more information soon. Consider these opportunities for Chamber participation in November: San Angelo Chamber of Commerce 418 W. Thank you for your continued support! Chamber Board Supports Proposition 1 The Chamber and the San Angelo Association of REALTORS hosted a joint press conference to support Proposition 1, the initiative to transfer money from the State’s “rainy day fund” to pay for highway improvements across the State. State Representative Drew Darby spoke at the press conference as well as representatives of the Chamber, the Home Builders Association of San Angelo and the San Angelo Association of REALTORS. The Chamber’s Board of Directors is on record in support of this initiative, and we encourage our members to vote in favor of this constitutional amendment. It is especially important for areas of the State like ours that are experiencing high growth rates and increased energy traffic. Election day is Tuesday, November 4th, and voters may go to any polling location to vote on this day. Ribbon Cuttings/Ground Breakings Crazy Horse Art Gallery Blue Collar Health 3401 N.
