JULY 2016
It’s hard to believe that it’s already July and we’re
heading into the second half of our program year.
Traditionally we take a little break from our normal
monthly luncheon and some of our committee meetings
as our members enjoy summer vacations. This also
allows our staff to have a few weeks to regroup after
several very large events and begin looking ahead to
plan for those to come.
Jamie Akin
We enjoyed a very successful 10th annual Showdown
Chairman of the Board
in San Angelo Drag Boat Races that took place at Lake
Nasworthy June 24-26. The race committee, led by Board
members, the entire Chamber staff, our wonderful sponsors, hundreds of volunteers,
local media, and the race crews and race fans made for an extremely successful event
that created a major economic impact and promoted San Angelo and Lake Nasworthy.
The June 14th monthly luncheon featured the 33rd graduating class of Leadership
San Angelo, highlighted by a call to action for leadership opportunities by 51st Judicial
District Court Judge Barbara Walther. I want to congratulate the Leadership graduates
and encourage them to act on the opportunities to become involved within this great
place we call home.
In this newsletter you’ll find information on the annual West Texas Legislative Summit
which will be held on August 4th (with an evening reception/dinner with our legislators
on August 3rd). This year’s topic will focus on education as we explore education funding,
House Bill 5, the education/workforce connection, and dual credit programs, among
many other timely topics. U.S. Congressman Mike Conaway, Senator Charles Perry and
State Representative Drew Darby will partner with the Chamber and assist us by inviting
a large number of our elected representatives to participate in the program. We still
have a few sponsorship openings available, so contact Peggy Arnold to learn how your
business can be a part of this very important local and regional event. The schedule and
detailed information will be posted on the Chamber website within the next few days.
I hope you will get involved, as your Chamber has many opportunities to do so. Here
are some upcoming events:
 The Chamber will have no monthly luncheon in July as our members are enjoying
summer vacations.
 On July 14th, the Diversity Committee will host a “MicroBusiness Resource
Luncheon” from 11:30 to 1:00 at the Business Resource Center, 69 N. Chadbourne.
Come enjoy a complimentary lunch and learn about the resources available for your
business (see insert in this newsletter).
 The July 19th Business Brown Bag luncheon topic will be “Form I-9 Compliance: Let’s
Review the Basics,” and will be held in the Visitor Center River View Room. There is
no charge to attend, but you must make a reservation by calling 655-4136 to hold
your seat.
 The July 26th Business @ Happy Hour will be hosted by Fort Concho National Historic
Landmark, and will be held at E. Avenue C at Burgess Blvd (look for event signs to
help you find the exact location). The jackpot drawing will be $450 (if not won at the
June event), but remember someone from your organization must be present to
claim the prize! No RSVP is needed, so bring plenty of business cards to network and
promote your business!
Your Executive Committee will focus on Board of Director nominations, preparations
for the 2017 budget, and continue the search process for a new President/CEO during
the month of July. Your involvement and support of our Chamber has been incredible as
we continue to do great things in the Concho Valley.
Sincerely,
JULY 2016

June was an awesome month for tourism in San Angelo! The total
economic impact for an incredibly busy 2-week period is $6,031,000!
That is based on our estimated out-of-town attendance of just under
10,000 visitors in 2 weeks!

2016/2017 VISITOR GUIDE
We are once again working with the San Angelo
Standard-Times on production of the 2016/2017
Visitor’s Guide. This award winning publication is
distributed at the San Angelo Visitor Center as
well as area hotels and select locations throughout
the city. It is also inserted in all welcome bags for
conventions, reunions and meetings and is our
major fulfillment piece for those relocating to the
San Angelo area. This is the only visitor’s guide
published by the San Angelo Convention &
Visitors Bureau. In 2015, appr oximately 10,000
visitors were welcomed in our visitor’s center.
There were another 25 conventions welcoming
3,000 people, 15,000 festival attendees, and another 14 major sports events. We hope you agree that
the Visitor Guide is an excellent method of promoting your business to visitors. Sales will begin
on June 27th and the new guide will be published
on September 23rd. Cindy Alves or Lori Summerlin will be contacting you regarding your interest.
You can also call directly to book your advertising
with Pam Hammer at the Standard-Times,
659-8257. We look forward to your participation!
